Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the aromatic spices they had prepared.1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb,2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
but when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood beside them in dazzling attire.4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.
The women were terribly frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?
He is not here, but has been raised! Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again."7The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' "
Then the women remembered his words,8Then they remembered his words.
and when they returned from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.9When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles.10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
But these words seemed like pure nonsense to them, and they did not believe them.11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent down and saw only the strips of linen cloth; then he went home, wondering what had happened. 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
Now that very day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
They were talking to each other about all the things that had happened.14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
While they were talking and debating these things, Jesus himself approached and began to accompany them15As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
(but their eyes were kept from recognizing him).16but they were kept from recognizing him.
Then he said to them, "What are these matters you are discussing so intently as you walk along?" And they stood still, looking sad.17He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" They stood still, their faces downcast.
Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that have happened there in these days?"18One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?"
He said to them, "What things?" "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene," they replied, "a man who, with his powerful deeds and words, proved to be a prophet before God and all the people;19"What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.
and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be condemned to death, and crucified him.20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;
But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Not only this, but it is now the third day since these things happened.21but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.
Furthermore, some women of our group amazed us. They were at the tomb early this morning,22In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning
and when they did not find his body, they came back and said they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.23but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him."24Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus."
So he said to them, "You foolish people--how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!25He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
Wasn't it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into his glory?"26Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things written about himself in all the scriptures. 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
So they approached the village where they were going. He acted as though he wanted to go farther,28As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther.
but they urged him, "Stay with us, because it is getting toward evening and the day is almost done." So he went in to stay with them. 29But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
When he had taken his place at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.
At this point their eyes were opened and they recognized him. Then he vanished out of their sight.31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
They said to each other, "Didn't our hearts burn within us while he was speaking with us on the road, while he was explaining the scriptures to us?"32They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
So they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. They found the eleven and those with them gathered together33They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together
and saying, "The Lord has really risen, and has appeared to Simon!"34and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon."
Then they told what had happened on the road, and how they recognized him when he broke the bread. 35Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
While they were saying these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."36While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
But they were startled and terrified, thinking they saw a ghost.37They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
Then he said to them, "Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?38He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
Look at my hands and my feet; it's me! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones like you see I have."39Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have."
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
And while they still could not believe it (because of their joy) and were amazed, he said to them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"41And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
So they gave him a piece of broiled fish,42They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
and he took it and ate it in front of them. 43and he took it and ate it in their presence.
Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled."44He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures,45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
and said to them, "Thus it stands written that the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day,46He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.48You are witnesses of these things.
And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. But stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." 49I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
Then Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.50When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
Now during the blessing he departed and was taken up into heaven.51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
So they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,52Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
and were continually in the temple courts blessing God. 53And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
