New King James VersionEnglish Standard Version
When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death.1When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.2And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.
Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,3Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,
saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!4saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”
Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.5And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.
But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.”6But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.”
And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in.7So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers.
Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.8Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced,9Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel,
and gave them for the potter’s field, as the LORD directed me.”10and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”
Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.”11Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.”
And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.12But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer.
Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?”13Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?”
But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.14But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished.15Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted.
And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.16And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.
Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”17So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.18For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up.
While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”19Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.20Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
The governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said, “Barabbas!”21The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”
Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!”22Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!”
Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”23And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”
When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.24So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.”
And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”25And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.26Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him.27Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him.
And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.28And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”29and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.30And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head.
And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.31And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.
Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.32As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross.
And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull,33And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull),
they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.34they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it.
Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.”35And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.
Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.36Then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
And they put up over His head the accusation written against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.37And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”
Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left.38Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads39And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads
and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”40and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said,41So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,
“He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him.42“He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”43He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.44And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.
Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!”47And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”
Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.48And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink.
The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”49But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.”
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.50And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,51And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;52The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,
and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.53and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”54When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar,55There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,
among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.56among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.57When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him.58He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,59And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud
and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.60and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.
And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.
On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate,62The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’63and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’
Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.”64Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”
Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.”65Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.”
So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.66So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.
