Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John1Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was winning and baptizing more disciples than John
(though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did).2(although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were),
So he left Judea and returned to Galilee.3he left Judea and set out once more for Galilee.
He had to go through Samaria on the way.4But he had to pass through Samaria.
Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.5Now he came to a Samaritan town called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime.6Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, since he was tired from the journey, sat right down beside the well. It was about noon.
Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.”7A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me some water to drink."
He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.8(For his disciples had gone off into the town to buy supplies.)
The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”9So the Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you--a Jew--ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water to drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”10Jesus answered her, "If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, 'Give me some water to drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."
“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?11"Sir," the woman said to him, "you have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do you get this living water?
And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”12Surely you're not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock."
Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again.13Jesus replied, "Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again.
But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”14But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life."
“Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.”15The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water."
“Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.16He said to her, "Go call your husband and come back here."
“I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband—17The woman replied, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "Right you are when you said, 'I have no husband,'
for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”18for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!"
“Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet.19The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet.
So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you people say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."
Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.21Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews.22You people worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.
But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.23But a time is coming--and now is here--when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.
For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”24God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”25The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (the one called Christ); "whenever he comes, he will tell us everything."
Then Jesus told her, “ I Am the Messiah!”26Jesus said to her, "I, the one speaking to you, am he."
Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?”27Now at that very moment his disciples came back. They were shocked because he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, "What do you want?" or "Why are you speaking with her?"
The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone,28Then the woman left her water jar, went off into the town and said to the people,
“Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?”29"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Surely he can't be the Messiah, can he?"
So the people came streaming from the village to see him.30So they left the town and began coming to him.
Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.”31Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, eat something."
But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.”32But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."
“Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other.33So the disciples began to say to one another, "No one brought him anything to eat, did they?"
Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.34Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work.
You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.35Don't you say, 'There are four more months and then comes the harvest?' I tell you, look up and see that the fields are already white for harvest!
The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!36The one who reaps receives pay and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together.
You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true.37For in this instance the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.'
I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.” Many Samaritans Believe38I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have labored and you have entered into their labor."
Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!”39Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I ever did."
When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days,40So when the Samaritans came to him, they began asking him to stay with them. He stayed there two days,
long enough for many more to hear his message and believe.41and because of his word many more believed.
Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.” Jesus Heals an Official’s Son42They said to the woman, "No longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this one really is the Savior of the world."
At the end of the two days, Jesus went on to Galilee.43After the two days he departed from there to Galilee.
He himself had said that a prophet is not honored in his own hometown.44(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)
Yet the Galileans welcomed him, for they had been in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration and had seen everything he did there.45So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen all the things he had done in Jerusalem at the feast (for they themselves had gone to the feast).
As he traveled through Galilee, he came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a government official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick.46Now he came again to Cana in Galilee where he had made the water wine. In Capernaum there was a certain royal official whose son was sick.
When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum to heal his son, who was about to die.47When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.
Jesus asked, “Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?”48So Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders you will never believe!"
The official pleaded, “Lord, please come now before my little boy dies.”49"Sir," the official said to him, "come down before my child dies."
Then Jesus told him, “Go back home. Your son will live!” And the man believed what Jesus said and started home.50Jesus told him, "Go home; your son will live." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and set off for home.
While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him with the news that his son was alive and well.51While he was on his way down, his slaves met him and told him that his son was going to live.
He asked them when the boy had begun to get better, and they replied, “Yesterday afternoon at one o’clock his fever suddenly disappeared!”52So he asked them the time when his condition began to improve, and they told him, "Yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon the fever left him."
Then the father realized that that was the very time Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and his entire household believed in Jesus.53Then the father realized that it was the very time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he himself believed along with his entire household.
This was the second miraculous sign Jesus did in Galilee after coming from Judea.54Jesus did this as his second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee.
