Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John1Ὡς οὖν ἔγνω Ἰησοῦς* ὅτι ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὅτι Ἰησοῦς πλείονας μαθητὰς ποιεῖ καὶ βαπτίζει Ἰωάννης
(though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did).2καίτοιγε Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς οὐκ ἐβάπτιζεν ἀλλ’ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ
So he left Judea and returned to Galilee.3ἀφῆκεν τὴν Ἰουδαίαν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
He had to go through Samaria on the way.4Ἔδει δὲ αὐτὸν διέρχεσθαι διὰ τῆς Σαμαρείας
Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.5ἔρχεται οὖν εἰς πόλιν τῆς Σαμαρείας λεγομένην Συχὰρ πλησίον τοῦ χωρίου ἔδωκεν Ἰακὼβ ‹τῷ› Ἰωσὴφ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ
Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime.6ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ πηγὴ τοῦ Ἰακώβ οὖν Ἰησοῦς κεκοπιακὼς ἐκ τῆς ὁδοιπορίας ἐκαθέζετο οὕτως ἐπὶ τῇ πηγῇ ὥρα ἦν ὡς ἕκτη
Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.”7Ἔρχεται γυνὴ ἐκ τῆς Σαμαρείας ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Δός μοι πεῖν
He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.8οἱ γὰρ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπεληλύθεισαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἵνα τροφὰς ἀγοράσωσιν
The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”9Λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ γυνὴ Σαμαρῖτις Πῶς σὺ Ἰουδαῖος ὢν παρ’ ἐμοῦ πεῖν αἰτεῖς γυναικὸς Σαμαρίτιδος οὔσης οὐ γὰρ συνχρῶνται Ἰουδαῖοι Σαμαρίταις
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”10Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Εἰ ᾔδεις τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τίς ἐστιν λέγων σοι Δός μοι πεῖν σὺ ἂν ᾔτησας αὐτὸν καὶ ἔδωκεν ἄν σοι ὕδωρ ζῶν
“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?11Λέγει αὐτῷ ‹ἡ γυνή› Κύριε οὔτε ἄντλημα ἔχεις καὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἐστὶν βαθύ πόθεν οὖν ἔχεις τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ ζῶν
And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”12μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰακώβ ὃς ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν τὸ φρέαρ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔπιεν καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ θρέμματα αὐτοῦ
Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again.13Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Πᾶς πίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος τούτου διψήσει πάλιν
But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”14ὃς δ’ ἂν πίῃ ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος οὗ ἐγὼ δώσω αὐτῷ οὐ μὴ διψήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἀλλὰ τὸ ὕδωρ δώσω αὐτῷ γενήσεται ἐν αὐτῷ πηγὴ ὕδατος ἁλλομένου εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον
“Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.”15Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν γυνή Κύριε δός μοι τοῦτο τὸ ὕδωρ ἵνα μὴ διψῶ μηδὲ διέρχωμαι ἐνθάδε ἀντλεῖν
“Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.16Λέγει αὐτῇ Ὕπαγε φώνησον τὸν ἄνδρα σου καὶ ἐλθὲ ἐνθάδε
“I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband—17Ἀπεκρίθη γυνὴ καὶ εἶπεν ‹αὐτῷ› Οὐκ ἔχω ἄνδρα Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Καλῶς εἶπας* ὅτι Ἄνδρα οὐκ ἔχω
for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”18πέντε γὰρ ἄνδρας ἔσχες καὶ νῦν ὃν ἔχεις οὐκ ἔστιν σου ἀνήρ τοῦτο ἀληθὲς εἴρηκας
“Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet.19Λέγει αὐτῷ γυνή Κύριε θεωρῶ ὅτι προφήτης εἶ σύ
So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”20οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ προσεκύνησαν καὶ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐστὶν τόπος ὅπου προσκυνεῖν δεῖ
Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.21Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Πίστευέ μοι γύναι ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὔτε ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ οὔτε ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις προσκυνήσετε τῷ Πατρί
You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews.22ὑμεῖς προσκυνεῖτε οὐκ οἴδατε ἡμεῖς προσκυνοῦμεν οἴδαμεν ὅτι σωτηρία ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐστίν
But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.23ἀλλὰ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν ὅτε οἱ ἀληθινοὶ προσκυνηταὶ προσκυνήσουσιν τῷ Πατρὶ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ καὶ γὰρ Πατὴρ τοιούτους ζητεῖ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν
For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”24Πνεῦμα Θεός καὶ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας ‹αὐτὸν› ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν
The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”25Λέγει αὐτῷ γυνή Οἶδα ὅτι Μεσσίας ἔρχεται λεγόμενος Χριστός ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος ἀναγγελεῖ ἡμῖν ἅπαντα
Then Jesus told her, “ I Am the Messiah!”26Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Ἐγώ εἰμι λαλῶν σοι
Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?”27Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἶπεν Τί ζητεῖς Τί λαλεῖς μετ’ αὐτῆς
The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone,28Ἀφῆκεν οὖν τὴν ὑδρίαν αὐτῆς γυνὴ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἀνθρώποις
“Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?”29Δεῦτε ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον ὃς εἶπέν μοι πάντα ὅσα* ἐποίησα μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν Χριστός
So the people came streaming from the village to see him.30ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτόν
Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.”31Ἐν τῷ μεταξὺ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Ῥαββί φάγε
But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.”32 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγὼ βρῶσιν ἔχω φαγεῖν ἣν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε
“Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other.33Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους Μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν
Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.34Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἐμὸν βρῶμά ἐστιν ἵνα ποιήσω* τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με καὶ τελειώσω αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔργον
You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.35οὐχ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Ἔτι τετράμηνός ἐστιν καὶ θερισμὸς ἔρχεται ἰδοὺ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐπάρατε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ θεάσασθε τὰς χώρας ὅτι λευκαί εἰσιν πρὸς θερισμόν ἤδη
The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!36 θερίζων μισθὸν λαμβάνει καὶ συνάγει καρπὸν εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἵνα σπείρων ὁμοῦ χαίρῃ καὶ θερίζων
You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true.37ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ λόγος ἐστὶν ἀληθινὸς ὅτι Ἄλλος ἐστὶν σπείρων καὶ ἄλλος θερίζων
I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.”
Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!”39Ἐκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν τῶν Σαμαριτῶν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικὸς μαρτυρούσης ὅτι Εἶπέν μοι πάντα ἐποίησα
When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days,40ὡς οὖν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Σαμαρῖται ἠρώτων αὐτὸν μεῖναι παρ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ δύο ἡμέρας
long enough for many more to hear his message and believe.41Καὶ πολλῷ πλείους ἐπίστευσαν διὰ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ
Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.”
At the end of the two days, Jesus went on to Galilee.43Μετὰ δὲ τὰς δύο ἡμέρας ἐξῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
He himself had said that a prophet is not honored in his own hometown.44αὐτὸς γὰρ Ἰησοῦς ἐμαρτύρησεν ὅτι προφήτης ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ πατρίδι τιμὴν οὐκ ἔχει
Yet the Galileans welcomed him, for they had been in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration and had seen everything he did there.45ὅτε οὖν ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἐδέξαντο αὐτὸν οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι πάντα ἑωρακότες ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν
As he traveled through Galilee, he came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a government official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick.46Ἦλθεν οὖν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Κανὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὅπου ἐποίησεν τὸ ὕδωρ οἶνον Καὶ ἦν τις βασιλικὸς οὗ υἱὸς ἠσθένει ἐν Καφαρναούμ
When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum to heal his son, who was about to die.47οὗτος ἀκούσας ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἥκει ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἀπῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἠρώτα ἵνα καταβῇ καὶ ἰάσηται αὐτοῦ τὸν υἱόν ἤμελλεν γὰρ ἀποθνήσκειν
Jesus asked, “Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?”48Εἶπεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτόν Ἐὰν μὴ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ἴδητε οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε
The official pleaded, “Lord, please come now before my little boy dies.”49Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν βασιλικός Κύριε κατάβηθι πρὶν ἀποθανεῖν τὸ παιδίον μου
Then Jesus told him, “Go back home. Your son will live!” And the man believed what Jesus said and started home.50Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Πορεύου υἱός σου ζῇ Ἐπίστευσεν ἄνθρωπος τῷ λόγῳ ὃν εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἐπορεύετο
While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him with the news that his son was alive and well.51ἤδη δὲ αὐτοῦ καταβαίνοντος οἱ δοῦλοι ‹αὐτοῦ› ὑπήντησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες ὅτι παῖς αὐτοῦ ζῇ
He asked them when the boy had begun to get better, and they replied, “Yesterday afternoon at one o’clock his fever suddenly disappeared!”52Ἐπύθετο οὖν τὴν ὥραν παρ’ αὐτῶν ἐν κομψότερον ἔσχεν εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ ὅτι Ἐχθὲς ὥραν ἑβδόμην ἀφῆκεν αὐτὸν πυρετός
Then the father realized that that was the very time Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and his entire household believed in Jesus.53Ἔγνω οὖν πατὴρ ὅτι [ἐν] ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐν εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς υἱός σου ζῇ καὶ ἐπίστευσεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἰκία αὐτοῦ ὅλη
This was the second miraculous sign Jesus did in Galilee after coming from Judea.54Τοῦτο δὲ πάλιν δεύτερον σημεῖον ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς ἐλθὼν ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
