Berean Study Bible Joash Anointed King of JudahAfter six years of Athaliah’s rule, the time had come to act. During her reign, the royal family had been nearly destroyed, Baal worship had been promoted, and the rightful heir to David’s throne had been hidden in the temple. 2Ki 11:3 And Joash remained hidden with his nurse… Jehoiada strengthened himself The high priest prepared carefully and acted with courage. Having protected Joash since infancy, he now moved to restore the Davidic king and reestablish proper worship in Judah. 2Ch 17:1 Asa’s son Jehoshaphat reigned in his place,… and made a covenant with the commanders of hundreds— Jehoiada secured the loyalty of key military officers before revealing the plan. Their agreement bound them to protect Joash, remove Athaliah, and uphold the covenant promises connected to David’s line. 2Ki 11:4 Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders… with Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri. These commanders brought needed military support from among Judah’s leaders. Their participation showed that opposition to Athaliah extended beyond the priesthood and that influential men were ready to recognize Joash as the lawful king. 2Ki 11:5-8 This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty… So they went throughout Judah Jehoiada’s representatives carried out a deliberate plan across the southern kingdom, securing support for the restoration of David’s rightful heir. 2Ch 17:9 They taught throughout Judah, taking with them… and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah The Levites were summoned because their service at the temple and their authority in matters of worship were essential to the covenantal and public legitimacy of the undertaking. 2Ch 29:4-5 Then he brought in the priests and Levites… and the heads of the families of Israel. Clan leaders joined the Levites, bringing the support of the people they represented. Their participation united religious and civil leadership behind the protection and coronation of Joash. 2Ch 19:8 Moreover, Jehoshaphat appointed in Jerusalem… And when they came to Jerusalem, The assembly met in the city of the temple and the Davidic throne, where Jehoiada could carry out the plan to remove Athaliah’s usurpation and restore the royal line. Ezr 8:32 So we arrived at Jerusalem and rested there for three days. the whole assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. Judah’s leaders and people publicly bound themselves to support Joash as the rightful heir of David. The covenant was made in the temple, placing the restoration of the throne before the Lord and affirming their obligation to uphold His appointed king. 2Ki 11:17 Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king… “Behold, the king’s son!” said Jehoiada. Jehoiada revealed Joash, who had been protected in the temple for six years after Athaliah sought to destroy the royal family. His announcement exposed Athaliah’s unlawful rule and rallied the nation around the surviving son of Ahaziah. 2Ki 11:12 Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son,… “He must reign, just as the LORD promised concerning the descendants of David. Joash’s accession was not merely a political change but the preservation of God’s covenant with David. Though the royal line had nearly been extinguished, the Lord preserved David’s descendant and restored him to the throne. 2Sa 7:12-16 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest… This is what you are to do: Jehoiada gives precise orders for the protection of Joash and the removal of Athaliah’s unlawful rule. His plan carries out God’s preservation of David’s royal line. 2Ki 11:5 This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty… A third of you priests and Levites who come on duty on the Sabbath The Sabbath rotation brought a large number of temple servants to Jerusalem without attracting unusual attention. Dividing them into groups provided sufficient security while maintaining the normal order of temple worship. 2Ki 11:7 the two divisions that would go off duty on the Sabbath… shall keep watch at the doors, Guards were stationed at the temple entrances to control access and prevent Athaliah’s supporters from disrupting Joash’s coronation. The temple, as the center of Israel’s worship, became the secure setting for restoring the rightful king. 2Ki 11:6 a third shall be at the gate of Sur, and a third… a third shall be at the royal palace, Jehoiada assigned a guard force to secure the king’s residence and prevent Athaliah or her supporters from seizing Joash before his public coronation. Protecting the young heir preserved the Davidic dynasty. 2Ki 11:5 This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty… and a third at the Foundation Gate, Another division guarded a key entrance, controlling access between the palace and temple precincts and preventing hostile forces from entering the area. 2Ki 11:6 a third shall be at the gate of Sur, and a third… while all the others are to be in the courtyards of the house of the LORD. The remaining guards secured the temple courts, where Joash would be presented and anointed before the people. The arrangement protected both the king and the worshiping assembly during the restoration of David’s rightful line. 2Ch 29:16 So the priests went inside the house of the LORD… No one is to enter the house of the LORD except the priests and those Levites who serve; During the overthrow of Athaliah, Jehoiada guarded the temple’s holiness while organizing the protection of young King Joash. Access to the sacred areas remained limited to those appointed for priestly and Levitical service. Num 18:3-7 And they shall attend to all the duties of the Tent;… they may enter because they are consecrated, The priests and ministering Levites had been set apart for the Lord’s service and were therefore permitted to carry out their duties within the temple. Their consecration distinguished them from the armed guards and the general population gathered for the king’s coronation. Num 8:14-19 In this way you shall separate the Levites… but all the people are to obey the requirement of the LORD. The people were to remain in their assigned places and respect the boundaries God had established for worship. Jehoiada’s careful order protected both the sanctuary and the lawful restoration of David’s royal line through Joash. Lev 8:35 You must remain at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting… The Levites must surround the king with weapons in hand, Jehoiada assigned the Levites to protect Joash during his public presentation as king. Their presence joined the restoration of David’s royal line with the defense of the temple and its covenantal order. 2Ki 11:9-10 So the commanders of hundreds did everything… and anyone who enters the temple must be put to death. Strict security prevented Athaliah’s supporters from disrupting the coronation or seizing the young king. The command guarded the holy place and the rightful heir at a decisive moment for Judah. Num 18:7 But only you and your sons shall attend to your priesthood… You must stay close to the king wherever he goes.” Joash remained vulnerable, and the Levites were to escort him until his position was secure. Their vigilance ensured that the anointing and proclamation of the king could be completed without interference. 2Sa 15:21-22 But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives… So the Levites and all Judah did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Jehoiada united the Levites and the leaders of Judah in a carefully planned effort to protect Joash, the surviving heir of David’s royal line, and remove Athaliah from power. Their obedience reflected Jehoiada’s authority as high priest and their recognition that the kingdom had to be restored according to God’s covenant with David. 2Ki 11:9 So the commanders of hundreds did everything… Each of them took his men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty— The Sabbath change of temple guards provided Jehoiada with an opportunity to gather additional men without arousing suspicion. Both the incoming and outgoing divisions were assigned to the operation, allowing the temple and the young king to be guarded closely during the coronation. 2Ki 11:5-7 This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty… for Jehoiada the priest had not released any of the divisions. Rather than dismissing the outgoing guards as usual, Jehoiada kept every division in place to provide sufficient protection against Athaliah and her supporters. His preparation helped ensure that Joash was publicly proclaimed king and that the Davidic line was preserved. 2Ki 11:8 You must surround the king with weapons in hand… Then Jehoiada the priest Jehoiada led the effort to remove Athaliah and restore the Davidic king to Judah’s throne. As high priest, he joined faithfulness to God with careful action to preserve the royal line through Joash. 2Ki 11:15 And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds… gave to the commanders of hundreds Jehoiada entrusted the military officers with the means to secure the temple and protect the young king during the public coronation. Their cooperation provided the order necessary for the covenant renewal. 2Ki 11:4 Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders… the spears and the large and small shields The weapons armed the guards for a decisive moment when resistance from Athaliah’s supporters was possible. Their distribution showed that the temple was prepared to defend the rightful king. 2Ki 11:10 Then the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds… of King David These weapons connected Joash’s installation with David’s royal house. David’s dynasty had been preserved despite Athaliah’s attempt to destroy it, fulfilling God’s covenant promise concerning his line. 2Sa 8:11 King David dedicated these to the LORD,… that were in the house of God. The temple held these royal weapons as part of its provisions. Their use in defending Joash emphasized that the restoration of Judah’s government was bound to the restoration of proper worship and obedience to the Lord. 1Sa 21:9 The priest replied, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine… He stationed all the troops, Jehoiada placed the Levites and loyal guards in assigned positions to secure the coronation of Joash and prevent Athaliah’s supporters from disrupting it. 2Ki 11:7 the two divisions that would go off duty on the Sabbath… with their weapons in hand, Though the Levites ordinarily served at the temple, the crisis required them to defend the rightful heir and preserve the Davidic line. 2Ki 11:8 You must surround the king with weapons in hand… surrounding the king by the altar and the temple, Joash stood under guard in the temple courts, where his anointing and presentation publicly affirmed that his kingship was established before the LORD. 2Ki 11:11 And the guards stood with weapons in hand… from the south side to the north side of the temple. The guards formed a complete protective line across the temple area, controlling access to the young king during the decisive transfer of power. Ezk 40:24 Then he led me to the south side, and I saw a gateway… Then Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king’s son, Jehoiada had safeguarded Joash in the temple for six years while Athaliah seized control of Judah and destroyed the royal family. Joash’s appearance preserved the line of David and marked God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises. 2Ki 11:12 Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son,… put the crown on him, The crown publicly identified Joash as Judah’s rightful king and ended Athaliah’s unlawful rule. Psa 21:3 For You welcomed him with rich blessings;… presented him with the Testimony, Joash received the covenant document as a reminder that the king ruled under God’s authority and was responsible to govern according to His law. Deu 17:18-19 When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write… and proclaimed him king. The proclamation established Joash before the people as the legitimate heir of David and gathered Judah around its restored king. 1Ki 1:39-40 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle.… They anointed him The anointing set Joash apart for his royal office and signified God’s approval of his appointment. 1Sa 10:1 Then Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on Saul’s head… and shouted, “Long live the king!” The people openly pledged their loyalty to Joash and celebrated the restoration of David’s throne in Judah. 1Sa 10:24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the one…
The Death of AthaliahAthaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel and widow of Judah’s King Jehoram, had seized the throne after ordering the destruction of the royal family. Jehoiada the priest had preserved Joash, the surviving heir of David’s line, and now revealed and anointed him as king. The public celebration showed Judah’s rejection of Athaliah’s violent usurpation and its renewed support for the Davidic monarchy God had established. 2Ki 11:13 When Athaliah heard the noise from the guards… she went out to them in the house of the LORD. Athaliah entered the temple precincts, where Joash had been presented before the people and guarded by the priests and Levites. The temple, which had suffered under her promotion of Baal worship, became the setting for the restoration of rightful kingship and the renewal of proper worship of the LORD. 2Ki 11:14 And she looked out and saw the king standing by the pillar,… And she looked and saw the king standing by his pillar at the entrance. Athaliah entered the temple court and saw Joash publicly presented in the customary place reserved for the king. Hidden in the temple for six years, the young heir was now revealed as the surviving descendant of David and the rightful ruler of Judah. 2Ki 11:14 And she looked out and saw the king standing by the pillar,… The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, Military commanders and temple guards stood with Joash to protect him and to confirm that the coronation had lawful support. The trumpeters signaled a royal proclamation and marked the occasion as a national event. 2Ki 11:11 And the guards stood with weapons in hand… and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets, The people recognized Joash as king and celebrated the end of Athaliah’s unlawful rule. Their response showed broad public support for the restoration of David’s dynasty. 1Ki 1:40 All the people followed him, playing flutes and rejoicing…… while the singers with musical instruments were leading the praises. The coronation included organized worship, joining the nation’s political restoration with thanksgiving to God. The temple musicians led the people in celebration as the rightful king was established. 2Ch 5:13 The trumpeters and singers joined together to praise… Then Athaliah tore her clothes and screamed, “Treason, treason!” Athaliah’s cry exposed her alarm at losing power. Though she accused others of treason, she had seized the throne after the death of her son and attempted to destroy the royal family. Her rule was ending as Joash was restored to the throne. 2Ki 9:23 Joram turned around and fled, calling out to Ahaziah,… And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, Jehoiada acted decisively to protect the rightful heir of David’s house and remove Athaliah’s unlawful rule. The officers under his command show that the covenant had been carefully supported by trusted military leaders as well as by the priests and Levites gathered at the temple. 2Ki 11:4 Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders… saying, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” Athaliah was to be taken beyond the temple courts, and any armed resistance from her supporters was to be stopped immediately. Her removal ended the violent usurpation that had threatened the Davidic line and Judah’s faithful worship. 2Ki 9:33-35 “Throw her down!” yelled Jehu. So they threw her down… For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.” Though Athaliah deserved judgment for her crimes and idolatrous influence, Jehoiada would not allow bloodshed to profane the temple. The house of the LORD was preserved as a place set apart for His worship while judgment was carried out elsewhere. 2Ki 11:15 And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds… So they seized Athaliah Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, had usurped Judah’s throne and promoted the idolatrous influence of her family. Jehoiada’s carefully organized revolt brought her unlawful rule to an end and preserved the Davidic line through the young king Joash. 2Ki 11:15 And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds… as she reached the entrance of the Horse Gate Removed from the temple precincts, Athaliah was taken toward a gate associated with access to the royal complex, where her execution would not defile the house of God. 2Ki 11:16 So they seized Athaliah as she reached the horses’ entrance… on the palace grounds, The royal grounds had been the center of her authority, yet they became the place of her judgment. 2Ki 11:19 He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites,… and there they put her to death. Her execution ended the immediate threat to Joash and marked the overthrow of a regime characterized by violence, idolatry, and opposition to God’s covenant with David. 2Ki 9:33-37 “Throw her down!” yelled Jehu. So they threw her down…
Jehoiada Restores the Worship of the LORDJehoiada led Judah in restoring covenant loyalty after Athaliah’s unlawful reign and the promotion of Baal worship. As high priest, he helped establish Joash’s rightful rule under the authority of the LORD. 2Ki 11:17 Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king… between himself and the king The covenant joined priestly and royal leadership in a shared obligation to uphold God’s law. Though Joash was young, his reign was to be directed by faithfulness to the LORD rather than the corrupt influence that had shaped Athaliah’s rule. 2Sa 5:3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron… and the people Judah’s restoration required the participation of the nation, not merely its leaders. The people publicly accepted responsibility to reject idolatry and return to the worship commanded by God. 2Ki 23:3 So the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant… that they would be the LORD’s people. Israel’s identity rested on belonging to the LORD through His covenant. The agreement marked a renewed commitment to live as His people and prepared the way for the removal of Baal worship from Jerusalem. Deu 26:17-19 Today you have proclaimed that the LORD is your God… So all the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. Following the covenant renewal under Jehoiada, the people acted together to remove the idolatry promoted during Athaliah’s rule. Baal worship had gained a foothold in Judah through her influence, but the destruction of its temple marked the restoration of Yahweh’s worship as the nation’s true allegiance. 2Ki 11:18 So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal… They smashed the altars and idols to pieces The altars and images used in Baal worship were completely destroyed, leaving no place or object for continued idolatry. Their actions showed that the renewal of Judah’s covenant with God required more than replacing a ruler; it required removing the corrupt worship that had accompanied Athaliah’s reign. 2Ki 23:14-15 He smashed the sacred pillars to pieces,… and killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars. Mattan was executed as the priest responsible for leading Baal worship. His death before the altars publicly ended his ministry and demonstrated that those who had drawn Judah into idolatry would no longer direct the nation’s worship. 2Ki 10:25-28 When he had finished making the burnt offering,… Moreover, Jehoiada put the oversight of the house of the LORD into the hands of the Levitical priests, Jehoiada restored the temple ministry according to God’s appointed order. The Levites, set apart from the tribe of Levi for sacred service, were entrusted with the responsibilities of maintaining proper worship. 1Ch 23:28-32 but their duty was to assist the descendants of Aaron… whom David had appointed over the house of the LORD, David had organized the Levites for temple service in preparation for the temple Solomon would build. Jehoiada’s actions restored practices that had been neglected under Athaliah’s rule. 1Ch 23:4-6 “Of these,” said David, “24,000 are to oversee the work… to offer burnt offerings to the LORD as written in the Law of Moses, The sacrifices were to be offered according to the commands God gave through Moses. Burnt offerings expressed atonement, consecration, and Israel’s covenant obligation to the LORD. Num 28:1-8 Then the LORD said to Moses,… with rejoicing and song, Temple worship included joyful music as well as sacrifice. The people’s worship involved reverence, obedience, and public celebration of the LORD’s reign. 1Ch 15:16 David also told the leaders of the Levites to appoint… as ordained by David. David had established musicians and singers for the worship of God, providing an enduring pattern for Israel’s temple service. 2Ch 29:25-27 Hezekiah stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD… He stationed gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the LORD, Jehoiada placed Levite gatekeepers at the temple entrances after Joash was crowned and Athaliah was removed. Their presence restored proper oversight of the sanctuary, which had been violated during Athaliah’s rule and used to support Baal worship. The temple again functioned according to the order God had established for Israel’s worship. 1Ch 26:12-19 These divisions of the gatekeepers had duties… so that no one who was in any way unclean could enter. Access to the temple required ceremonial cleanliness, preserving the holiness of the place where God had set His name. The gatekeepers protected the worship of the LORD from defilement and ensured that those entering did so in obedience to His commands. Lev 22:3-4 Tell them that for the generations to come… And he took with him the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people, and all the people of the land, Jehoiada gathered military officers, civil leaders, and the people of Judah in a united effort to restore the Davidic king. Their presence demonstrated broad support for Joash and rejected Athaliah’s unlawful rule. 2Ki 11:4 Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders… and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD Joash had been protected in the temple for six years. Bringing him out publicly from the house of the LORD showed that his restoration was carried out under priestly oversight and in accordance with God’s covenant with David. 1Ki 1:33-35 “Take my servants with you,” said the king.… and entered the royal palace through the Upper Gate. The procession moved from the temple to the palace in an orderly and public transfer of authority. The Upper Gate, a significant entrance to the royal palace, provided an appropriate entrance for the king’s formal and ceremonial return to the seat of government. 2Ki 11:19 He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites,… They seated King Joash on the royal throne, Joash was installed as the rightful descendant of David, ending Athaliah’s usurpation. His enthronement restored the Davidic dynasty in Judah and affirmed the Lord’s promise that David’s line would continue. 1Ch 29:23 So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king… and all the people of the land rejoiced. Athaliah’s overthrow ended six years of unlawful rule, marked by the promotion of Baal worship and the attempted destruction of David’s royal line. With Joash publicly installed as king, Judah rejoiced in the preservation of David’s dynasty and the restoration of rightful leadership. 1Ki 1:40 All the people followed him, playing flutes and rejoicing…… And the city was quiet, Order returned to Jerusalem after the violence surrounding Athaliah’s seizure of power. The removal of her influence allowed the nation to move from fear and disorder toward stability under the renewed covenant leadership of Jehoiada and the young king. 2Ki 11:20 and all the people of the land rejoiced.… because Athaliah had been put to the sword. Athaliah was executed outside the temple precincts after her treason and idolatry were exposed. Her death brought an end to her illegitimate reign and preserved the Davidic line through which the promised Messiah would come. 2Ki 11:15 And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
