The Ninevites Repent

Then the word of the LORD

God again spoke with divine authority, directing the course of Jonah’s mission.

Hos 1:1 This is the word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri…
Jer 1:2 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in the thirteenth year…
Zec 1:1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,…

came to Jonah

The prophet, son of Amittai from Gath-hepher in Israel, had fled his earlier commission to Nineveh and experienced God’s discipline and deliverance.

Jon 1:1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai…
1Ki 17:8 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:
1Ki 17:2 Then a revelation from the LORD came to Elijah:

a second time:

God restored Jonah to his task rather than abandoning him after his disobedience. The renewed command shows that God’s purposes for Nineveh and His servant would still be carried out.

Hag 2:20 For the second time that day, the twenty-fourth day…
Jer 1:13 Again the word of the LORD came to me, asking,…

“Get up!

God renews His command to Jonah after the prophet’s deliverance from the fish, calling him to immediate obedience.

Act 22:10 Then I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ ‘Get up……
Ezk 3:22 And there the hand of the LORD was upon me,…
Jer 13:4 Take the loincloth that you bought and are wearing…

Go to the great city of Nineveh

Nineveh, the leading city of Assyria on the Tigris River, was known for its power, size, and violence. God’s concern extended beyond Israel to this Gentile city facing judgment.

Jon 1:2 Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh.…
Jon 4:11 So should I not care about the great city of Nineveh,…
Nam 1:1 This is the burden against Nineveh, the book…

and proclaim to it

Jonah was to publicly announce God’s warning to the people of Nineveh, serving as God’s appointed messenger despite the danger and his earlier reluctance.

Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…
Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…
2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season;…

the message that I give you.”

Jonah was not free to alter or soften the warning. The message came from God, who directed both the prophet and the destiny of the nation.

Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……
Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Exo 4:12 “Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach”…

This time Jonah got up and went to Nineveh,

Jonah responded to the Lord’s renewed command, reversing his earlier flight toward Tarshish. God’s discipline had brought His prophet back to the task he had been given. Nineveh was the leading city of Assyria, a powerful Gentile empire and a future threat to Israel. Jonah’s mission showed that the Lord’s concern and authority extended beyond Israel to the nations.

Jon 1:2 Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh.…
Jon 2:10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah…
Gen 12:4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him…

in accordance with the word of the LORD.

Jonah went under God’s direct command and carried God’s message rather than his own. His obedience marked a decisive change from his earlier rebellion.

1Ki 17:5 So Elijah did what the LORD had told him,…
Exo 7:6 So Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded them.
Gen 6:22 So Noah did everything precisely as God had commanded him.

Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city,

Nineveh was a prominent and influential city, known for its size, population, and importance within the Assyrian Empire. Its coming repentance would demonstrate God’s mercy toward a people outside the covenant nation of Israel.

Jon 4:11 So should I not care about the great city of Nineveh,…
Gen 10:11-12 From that land he went forth into Assyria,…
Nam 3:8 Are you better than Thebes, stationed by the Nile…

requiring a three-day journey.

The city and its surrounding district were extensive enough that Jonah’s proclamation required three days to cover it thoroughly. The scale of the assignment emphasized the reach of God’s warning to Nineveh’s inhabitants.

Exo 3:18 The elders of Israel will listen to what you say,…
Exo 5:3 “The God of the Hebrews has met with us,” they answered.…
Num 10:33 So they set out on a three-day journey from the mountain…

On the first day of his journey,

Jonah immediately began carrying out God’s command after arriving at Nineveh. His obedience contrasts with his earlier attempt to flee and shows that the warning was delivered within the time God appointed.

Jon 1:2 Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh.…
Ezk 3:4-5 Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now…
Amo 7:15 But the LORD took me from following the flock…

Jonah set out into the city

Nineveh was a major Assyrian city, large and influential within an empire known for its military power and cruelty. Entering its streets alone to announce judgment required courage and dependence on God.

Act 8:5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria…
Mat 11:1 After Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples…
Luk 4:43 But Jesus told them, “I must preach the good news…

and proclaimed,

Jonah publicly delivered God’s message to the inhabitants. The warning was direct and unmistakable, giving the city an opportunity to turn from its evil before judgment fell.

Mat 10:7 As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven…
Mrk 1:14-15 After the arrest of John, Jesus went into Galilee…
Ezk 33:7 As for you, O son of man, I have made you a watchman…

“Forty more days

God granted Nineveh a definite period before the announced judgment. The forty days allowed time for the people, from the king to the least, to respond in repentance.

Gen 7:17 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth…
Deu 9:9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets…
1Ki 19:8 So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food…

and Nineveh will be overturned!”

The city faced real destruction because of its wickedness. Yet the warning also opened the way for mercy, and Nineveh’s repentance led God to withhold the disaster He had announced.

Nam 3:7 Then all who see you will recoil from you…
Gen 19:25 Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain…
2Pe 2:6 He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah…

And the Ninevites believed God.

Jonah’s warning was received as God’s true declaration of coming judgment. In a major Assyrian city known for violence and idolatry, the people responded with genuine fear of God and a willingness to turn from their evil ways.

Rom 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God…
Gal 3:6 So also, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him…”…
Exo 14:31 When Israel saw the great power that the LORD had exercised…

They proclaimed a fast

The city’s inhabitants publicly humbled themselves, seeking mercy before the announced destruction came.

2Ch 20:3 Jehoshaphat was alarmed and set his face to seek the LORD.…
Ezr 8:21 And there by the Ahava Canal I proclaimed a fast…
Jol 1:14 Consecrate a fast; proclaim a solemn assembly!…

and dressed in sackcloth,

Their outward mourning showed grief over sin and submission before God’s authority.

Est 4:1 When Mordecai learned of all that had happened,…
2Ki 19:1 On hearing this report, King Hezekiah tore his clothes…
Dan 9:3 So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek Him…

from the greatest of them to the least.

The response reached every level of Nineveh’s society, from its leaders to its poorest citizens, revealing a citywide repentance rather than the action of only a few.

Jer 31:34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother…
Jer 6:13 “For from the least of them to the greatest,…
2Ch 34:30 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…

When word reached the king of Nineveh,

Nineveh was the leading city of Assyria, an empire feared for its military strength and brutality. Jonah’s warning spread through the city and reached its ruler, showing that God’s message had affected every level of society.

2Ki 22:11 When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law,…
2Ch 34:19 When the king heard the words of the Law, he…

he got up from his throne,

The king left the seat of royal authority, acknowledging that he stood accountable before a power greater than his own.

1Ki 2:19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him…
Est 7:7 In his fury, the king arose from drinking his wine…

took off his royal robe,

By setting aside the clothing that marked his rank, he publicly laid down the dignity and privilege of his office.

2Sa 13:19 And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore her robe.…
Job 2:12 When they lifted up their eyes from afar,…

covered himself with sackcloth,

He adopted the customary garment of mourning and repentance, identifying himself with the people of Nineveh in their response to God’s warning.

2Ki 19:1 On hearing this report, King Hezekiah tore his clothes…
1Ki 21:27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes,…

and sat in ashes.

Ashes expressed grief, humiliation, and the recognition of coming judgment. The king’s actions demonstrated a serious repentance and a plea for mercy for the city.

Job 2:8 And Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself…
Job 42:6 Therefore I despise myself, and I repent in dust and ashes.”

Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh:

The king responded to Jonah’s warning without delay. Nineveh, the powerful capital of Assyria, was known for violence and conquest, yet its ruler recognized that the city faced God’s judgment.

Ezr 1:1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,…
Est 8:9 At once the royal scribes were summoned,…
Dan 6:26 I hereby decree that in every part of my kingdom,…

“By the decree of the king and his nobles:

The king acted with his leading officials, giving the command full authority throughout the city. Their united response showed that the warning had reached the highest levels of Nineveh’s government.

Est 1:19 So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree,…
Est 1:14 His closest advisors were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha…
Dan 6:8 Therefore, O king, establish the decree and sign…

Let no man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything at all.

The fast included every household and even the animals under their care. Normal life was suspended as the city publicly expressed grief and urgency before God.

Ezk 14:13 Son of man, if a land sins against Me…
Jol 1:18 How the cattle groan! The herds wander in confusion…

They must not eat or drink.

Abstaining from both food and water marked the severity of their repentance. The people of Nineveh sought mercy with outward signs that matched the seriousness of the judgment Jonah had announced.

Est 4:16 Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found…
Exo 34:28 So Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights…
Deu 9:9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets…

Furthermore, let both man and beast be covered with sackcloth,

Sackcloth marked grief, humiliation, and urgent distress. Including livestock in the citywide mourning displayed the depth of Nineveh’s alarm and involved every part of public life in the plea for mercy.

Jol 1:13-14 Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests; wail, O ministers…
Dan 9:3 So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek Him…
Jol 1:18-20 How the cattle groan! The herds wander in confusion…

and have everyone call out earnestly to God.

The people were commanded to seek God with urgency, abandoning confidence in their own power and appealing to His compassion.

2Ch 7:14 if My people who are called by My name humble themselves…
Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…
Psa 145:18 The LORD is near to all who call on Him,…

Let each one turn from his evil ways

Genuine repentance required more than fasting and outward mourning. Every person was called to abandon sinful conduct and change the course of life.

Ezk 18:30-32 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you…
Isa 55:7 Let the wicked man forsake his way; let him return…
Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…

and from the violence in his hands.

Nineveh, the leading city of Assyria, was associated with conquest and cruelty. Renouncing violence struck at a central sin of the city and demonstrated repentance through changed actions.

Isa 1:15-17 When you spread out your hands in prayer…
Jer 22:3 This is what the LORD says: Administer justice…
Mic 6:12 For the wealthy of the city are full of violence,…

Who knows?

The king and people of Nineveh recognized that God was not obligated to spare them, yet they hoped their repentance might be received.

Jol 2:14 Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing…
2Sa 12:22 David answered, “While the child was alive…
Est 4:14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief…

God may turn and relent;

Their fasting, mourning, and abandonment of violence appealed to God’s mercy, asking Him to turn from the judgment Jonah had announced and relent, that is, have compassion.

Exo 32:14 So the LORD relented from the calamity He had threatened…
Jer 18:8 But if that nation I warned turns from its evil,…
Amo 7:3 So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,”…

He may turn from His fierce anger,

Nineveh’s wickedness had brought them under God’s righteous wrath, but He remained willing to forgive those who turned from sin.

Deu 13:17 Nothing devoted to destruction shall cling to your hands,…
2Ch 30:8 Now do not stiffen your necks as your fathers did…
2Ch 12:12 Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the anger of the LORD…

so that we will not perish.”

The city understood that destruction was deserved and that its only hope was deliverance through God’s compassion.

Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise…
Luk 13:3 No, I tell you. But unless you repent, …

When God saw their actions—

Nineveh’s repentance was visible in the city’s fasting, mourning, and abandonment of violence and wickedness. From the greatest to the least, the people responded to Jonah’s warning with humility.

2Ch 12:7 When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves,…
Gen 6:5-6 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man…
Pro 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place…

that they had turned from their evil ways—

Their response was more than fear of judgment. They changed their conduct, showing that their repentance was genuine—a complete turning away from sin and returning to God. Though Nineveh was a pagan Assyrian city, God received its turning from sin.

Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents…
Jer 25:5 The prophets told you, ‘Turn now, each of you,…
Ezk 18:30-32 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you…

He relented from the disaster

God withheld the announced judgment because the people repented. His mercy did not weaken His justice; the warning had accomplished its purpose by leading Nineveh to turn from evil.

Exo 32:14 So the LORD relented from the calamity He had threatened…
2Sa 24:16 But when the angel stretched out his hand…
Amo 7:3 So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,”…

He had threatened to bring upon them.

The destruction proclaimed by Jonah was a real judgment against Nineveh’s sin. God spared the city at that time, revealing His readiness to show mercy when sinners humble themselves and turn from their evil ways.

Jer 26:3 Perhaps they will listen and turn—each from his evil way…
Jer 26:13 So now, correct your ways and deeds, and obey the voice…
Jer 18:7-10 At any time I might announce that a nation or kingdom…
