Mountains: Made to Glorify God

Mountains hold a significant place in the biblical narrative, serving as majestic symbols of God's creation and His divine presence. Throughout Scripture, mountains are depicted as places of revelation, worship, and divine encounter, underscoring their role in glorifying God.

Creation and Majesty

Mountains are part of God's magnificent creation, reflecting His power and majesty. In Psalm 95:4-5 , the psalmist declares, "In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him. The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land." This passage emphasizes that mountains, like all of creation, are under God's sovereign control and ownership, pointing to His creative authority.

Places of Revelation

Mountains often serve as settings for divine revelation and covenant-making. Mount Sinai is perhaps the most notable example, where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. Exodus 19:20 states, "The LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the summit." This mountain became a sacred place where God revealed His law and established His covenant with Israel.

Similarly, the Mount of Transfiguration is where Jesus revealed His divine glory to Peter, James, and John. In Matthew 17:1-2 , it is written, "After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There He was transfigured before them." This event highlights the mountain as a place of divine revelation and the manifestation of God's glory through Christ.

Worship and Sacrifice

Mountains are also significant as places of worship and sacrifice. Mount Moriah is where Abraham was tested by God to offer his son Isaac, a foreshadowing of God's ultimate sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. Genesis 22:2 records God's command: "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will show you."

Mount Zion, another prominent biblical mountain, is frequently associated with worship and the presence of God. It is the location of the city of Jerusalem and the temple, symbolizing God's dwelling place among His people. Psalm 48:1-2 proclaims, "Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, His holy mountain. Beautiful in loftiness, the joy of all the earth, like the peaks of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the great King."

Divine Protection and Refuge

Mountains are often depicted as symbols of divine protection and refuge. Psalm 125:2 illustrates this imagery: "As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people, both now and forevermore." This verse conveys the idea of God's steadfast protection, likening it to the enduring and immovable nature of mountains.

Eschatological Significance

In eschatological visions, mountains continue to play a significant role. The prophet Isaiah speaks of a future time when the mountain of the LORD's house will be established as the highest of the mountains, drawing all nations to it. Isaiah 2:2 states, "In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it." This prophecy points to a future era of peace and divine rule, with mountains symbolizing the exaltation of God's kingdom.

Throughout the Bible, mountains are more than mere geographical features; they are profound symbols of God's majesty, revelation, and protection. They serve as reminders of His creative power and His desire to dwell with His people, ultimately pointing to His glory and sovereignty over all creation.
