The Exiles Who Returned with Ezra

1  וְאֵ֛לֶּה (And these are) רָאשֵׁ֥י (the heads) אֲבֹתֵיהֶ֖ם (of their fathers) וְהִתְיַחְשָׂ֑ם (and the genealogy) הָעֹלִ֣ים (of those going up) עִמִּ֗י (with me) בְּמַלְכ֛וּת (in the reign) אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֥סְתְּא (of Artaxerxes) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king), מִבָּבֶֽל׃ס (from Babylon):

2  מִבְּנֵ֤י (Of the sons) פִֽינְחָס֙ (of Phinehas), גֵּֽרְשֹׁ֔םס (Gershom);

מִבְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) אִיתָמָ֖ר (of Ithamar), דָּנִיֵּ֑אלס (Daniel);

מִבְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) דָוִ֖יד (of David), חַטּֽוּשׁ׃ס (Hattush) 3  מִבְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) שְׁכַנְיָ֔הס (of Shechaniah);

מִבְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) פַרְעֹ֖שׁ (of Parosh), זְכַרְיָ֑ה (Zechariah), וְעִמּ֛וֹ (and with him) הִתְיַחֵ֥שׂ (were registered) לִזְכָרִ֖ים (males) מֵאָ֥ה (a hundred) וַחֲמִשִּֽׁים׃ס (and fifty).

4  מִבְּנֵי֙ (Of the sons) פַּחַ֣ת (of Pahath-) מוֹאָ֔ב (moab), אֶלְיְהֽוֹעֵינַ֖י (Eliehoenai) בֶּן־ (son) זְרַֽחְיָ֑ה (of Zerahiah), וְעִמּ֖וֹ (and with him) מָאתַ֥יִם (two hundred) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

5  מִבְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) שְׁכַנְיָ֖ה (of Shechaniah), בֶּן־ (son) יַחֲזִיאֵ֑ל (of Jahaziel), וְעִמּ֕וֹ (and with him) שְׁלֹ֥שׁ (three) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

6  וּמִבְּנֵ֣י (and of the sons) עָדִ֔ין (of Adin), עֶ֖בֶד (Ebed) בֶּן־ (son) יוֹנָתָ֑ן (of Jonathan), וְעִמּ֖וֹ (and with him) חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים (fifty) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

7  וּמִבְּנֵ֣י (and of the sons) עֵילָ֔ם (of Elam), יְשַֽׁעְיָ֖ה (Jeshaiah) בֶּן־ (son) עֲתַלְיָ֑ה (of Athaliah), וְעִמּ֖וֹ (and with him) שִׁבְעִ֥ים (seventy) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

8  וּמִבְּנֵ֣י (and of the sons) שְׁפַטְיָ֔ה (of Shephatiah), זְבַדְיָ֖ה (Zebadiah) בֶּן־ (son) מִֽיכָאֵ֑ל (of Michael), וְעִמּ֖וֹ (and with him) שְׁמֹנִ֥ים (eighty) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

9  מִבְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יוֹאָ֔ב (of Joab), עֹבַדְיָ֖ה (Obadiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְחִיאֵ֑ל (of Jehiel), וְעִמּ֕וֹ (and with him) מָאתַ֛יִם (two hundred) וּשְׁמֹנָ֥ה (and eight) עָשָׂ֖ר (and ten) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

10  וּמִבְּנֵ֥י (and of the sons) שְׁלוֹמִ֖ית (of Shelomith), בֶּן־ (the son) יוֹסִפְיָ֑ה (of Josiphiah), וְעִמּ֕וֹ (and with him) מֵאָ֥ה (a hundred) וְשִׁשִּׁ֖ים (and sixty) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

11  וּמִבְּנֵ֣י (and of the sons) בֵבַ֔י (of Bebai), זְכַרְיָ֖ה (Zechariah) בֶּן־ (son) בֵּבָ֑י (of Bebai), וְעִמּ֕וֹ (and with him) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וּשְׁמֹנָ֖ה (and eight) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

12  וּמִבְּנֵ֣י (and of the sons) עַזְגָּ֔ד (of Azgad), יוֹחָנָ֖ן (Johanan) בֶּן־ (son) הַקָּטָ֑ן (of Hakkatan), וְעִמּ֕וֹ (and with him) מֵאָ֥ה (a hundred) וַעֲשָׂרָ֖ה (and ten) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

13  וּמִבְּנֵ֣י (and of the sons) אֲדֹנִיקָם֮ (of Adonikam) אַחֲרֹנִים֒ (later)— וְאֵ֣לֶּה (and these) שְׁמוֹתָ֔ם (are their names)— אֱלִיפֶ֖לֶט (Eliphelet), יְעִיאֵ֣ל (Jeiel), וּֽשְׁמַעְיָ֑ה (and Shemaiah), וְעִמָּהֶ֖ם (and with them) שִׁשִּׁ֥ים (sixty) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס (males);

14  וּמִבְּנֵ֥י (and of the sons) בִגְוַ֖י (of Bigvai), עוּתַ֣י (Uthai) וְזָבוּד (and Zaccur), וְעִמּ֖וֹ (and with them) שִׁבְעִ֥ים (seventy) הַזְּכָרִֽים׃פ (males).

Ezra Sends for the Levites

15  וָֽאֶקְבְּצֵ֗ם (And I gathered them) אֶל־ (to) הַנָּהָר֙ (the river) הַבָּ֣א (that flows) אֶֽל־ (to) אַהֲוָ֔א (Ahava), וַנַּחֲנֶ֥ה (and we camped) שָׁ֖ם (there) יָמִ֣ים (days) שְׁלֹשָׁ֑ה (three). וָאָבִ֤ינָה (And I considered) בָעָם֙ (about the people) וּבַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (and the priests) וּמִבְּנֵ֥י (and from the sons) לֵוִ֖י (of Levi): לֹא־ (None) מָצָ֥אתִי (I have found) שָֽׁם׃ (there).

16  וָאֶשְׁלְחָ֡ה (And I sent) לֶאֱלִיעֶ֡זֶר (for Eliezer), לַאֲרִיאֵ֡ל (for Ariel), לִֽ֠שְׁמַעְיָה (for Shemaiah), וּלְאֶלְנָתָ֨ן (and for Elnathan), וּלְיָרִ֜יב (and for Jarib), וּלְאֶלְנָתָ֧ן (and for Elnathan), וּלְנָתָ֛ן (and for Nathan), וְלִזְכַרְיָ֥ה (and for Zechariah), וְלִמְשֻׁלָּ֖ם (and for Meshullam)— רָאשִׁ֑ים (leaders)— וּלְיוֹיָרִ֥יב (and for Joiarib), וּלְאֶלְנָתָ֖ן (and Elnathan)— מְבִינִֽים׃ (men of understanding). 17  וָאוֹצִאָה (And I sent) אוֹתָם֙ (them) עַל־ (to) אִדּ֣וֹ (Iddo) הָרֹ֔אשׁ (the leader) בְּכָסִפְיָ֖א (at Casiphia) הַמָּק֑וֹם (in the place), וָאָשִׂימָה֩ (and I told) בְּפִיהֶ֨ם (them) דְּבָרִ֜ים (what) לְ֠דַבֵּר (they should say) אֶל־ (to) אִדּ֨וֹ (Iddo) אָחִ֤יו (and his brothers) הַנְּתוּנִים (the Nethinim) בְּכָסִפְיָ֣א (at Casiphia) הַמָּק֔וֹם (the place), לְהָֽבִיא־ (that they should bring) לָ֥נוּ (to us) מְשָׁרְתִ֖ים (those ministering) לְבֵ֥ית (for the house) אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ (of our God).

18  וַיָּבִ֨יאּוּ (And they brought) לָ֜נוּ (to us) כְּיַד־ (by hand) אֱלֹהֵ֨ינוּ (of our God) הַטּוֹבָ֤ה (the good) עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ (upon us) אִ֣ישׁ (a man) שֶׂ֔כֶל (of understanding), מִבְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) מַחְלִ֔י (of Mahli), בֶּן־ (son) לֵוִ֖י (of Levi), בֶּן־ (son) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וְשֵׁרֵֽבְיָ֛ה (and Sherebiah) וּבָנָ֥יו (and his sons) וְאֶחָ֖יו (and his brothers), שְׁמֹנָ֥ה (eight) עָשָֽׂר׃ (and ten); 19  וְאֶת־ (and) חֲשַׁבְיָ֔ה (Hashabiah), וְאִתּ֥וֹ (and with him) יְשַֽׁעְיָ֖ה (Jeshaiah) מִבְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) מְרָרִ֑י (of Merari), אֶחָ֥יו (his brothers) וּבְנֵיהֶ֖ם (and their sons), עֶשְׂרִֽים׃ס (twenty); 20  וּמִן־ (and also) הַנְּתִינִ֗ים (of the Nethinim), שֶׁנָּתַ֨ן (whom had appointed) דָּוִ֤יד (David) וְהַשָּׂרִים֙ (and the leaders) לַעֲבֹדַ֣ת (for the service) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (of the Levites), נְתִינִ֖ים (Nethinim) מָאתַ֣יִם (two hundred) וְעֶשְׂרִ֑ים (and twenty). כֻּלָּ֖ם (All of them) נִקְּב֥וּ (were designated) בְשֵׁמֽוֹת׃ (by name).

Fasting for Protection

21  וָאֶקְרָ֨א (And I proclaimed) שָׁ֥ם (there) צוֹם֙ (a fast) עַל־ (at) הַנָּהָ֣ר (the river) אַהֲוָ֔א (Ahava), לְהִתְעַנּ֖וֹת (that we might humble ourselves) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (our God) לְבַקֵּ֤שׁ (to seek) מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ (from Him) דֶּ֣רֶךְ (the way) יְשָׁרָ֔ה (right) לָ֥נוּ (for us) וּלְטַפֵּ֖נוּ (and our little ones) וּלְכָל־ (and for all) רְכוּשֵֽׁנוּ׃ (our possessions). 22  כִּ֣י (For) בֹ֗שְׁתִּי (I was ashamed) לִשְׁא֤וֹל (to ask) מִן־ (of) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) חַ֣יִל (a force) וּפָרָשִׁ֔ים (and horsemen) לְעָזְרֵ֥נוּ (to help us) מֵאוֹיֵ֖ב (against the enemy) בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ (on the road), כִּֽי־ (because) אָמַ֨רְנוּ (we had spoken) לַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (to the king), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), יַד־ (The hand) אֱלֹהֵ֤ינוּ (of our God) עַל־ (is upon) כָּל־ (all) מְבַקְשָׁיו֙ (those who seek Him) לְטוֹבָ֔ה (for good), וְעֻזּ֣וֹ (and His strength) וְאַפּ֔וֹ (and His wrath) עַ֖ל (are against) כָּל־ (all) עֹזְבָֽיו׃ (forsaking Him).

23  וַנָּצ֛וּמָה (And we fasted) וַנְּבַקְשָׁ֥ה (and sought) מֵאֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (from our God) עַל־ (for) זֹ֑את (this), וַיֵּעָתֵ֖ר (and He was entreated) לָֽנוּ׃ (of us).

Priests to Guard the Offerings

24  וָאַבְדִּ֛ילָה (And I separated) מִשָּׂרֵ֥י (of the leaders) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (of the priests) שְׁנֵ֣ים (two) עָשָׂ֑ר (and ten), לְשֵׁרֵֽבְיָ֣ה (Sherebiah), חֲשַׁבְיָ֔ה (Hashabiah), וְעִמָּהֶ֥ם (and with them) מֵאֲחֵיהֶ֖ם (of their brothers) עֲשָׂרָֽה׃ (ten). 25  וָאֶשְׁקוֹלָה (And I weighed out) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֥סֶף (the silver) וְאֶת־ (and) הַזָּהָ֖ב (the gold) וְאֶת־ (and) הַכֵּלִ֑ים (the articles), תְּרוּמַ֣ת (the contribution) בֵּית־ (of the house) אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ (of our God) הַהֵרִ֙ימוּ֙ (which had offered) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) וְיֹעֲצָ֣יו (and his counselors) וְשָׂרָ֔יו (and his princes) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel)— הַנִּמְצָאִֽים׃ (those present)—

26  וָאֶשְׁקֲלָ֨ה (and I weighed) עַל־ (into) יָדָ֜ם (their hands) כֶּ֗סֶף (of silver) כִּכָּרִים֙ (talents) שֵֽׁשׁ־ (six) מֵא֣וֹת (hundred) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֔ים (and fifty), וּכְלֵי־ (and articles) כֶ֥סֶף (of silver) מֵאָ֖ה (a hundred) לְכִכָּרִ֑ים (talents), זָהָ֖ב (of gold) מֵאָ֥ה (a hundred) כִכָּֽר׃ (talents), 27  וּכְפֹרֵ֤י (and bowls) זָהָב֙ (gold) עֶשְׂרִ֔ים (twenty) לַאֲדַרְכֹנִ֖ים (of drachmas) אָ֑לֶף (a thousand), וּכְלֵ֨י (and vessels) נְחֹ֜שֶׁת (of bronze) מֻצְהָ֤ב (polished) טוֹבָה֙ (fine) שְׁנַ֔יִם (two), חֲמוּדֹ֖ת (precious) כַּזָּהָֽב׃ (as gold).

28  וָאֹמְרָ֣ה (And I said) אֲלֵהֶ֗ם (to them), אַתֶּ֥ם (You⁺ are) קֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ (holy) לַיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), וְהַכֵּלִ֖ים (and the articles are) קֹ֑דֶשׁ (holy), וְהַכֶּ֤סֶף (and the silver) וְהַזָּהָב֙ (and the gold) נְדָבָ֔ה (are a freewill offering) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) אֲבֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (of your⁺ fathers). 29  שִׁקְד֣וּ (Watch) וְשִׁמְר֗וּ (and keep them) עַֽד־ (until) תִּשְׁקְל֡וּ (you⁺ weigh them) לִפְנֵי֩ (before the face of) שָׂרֵ֨י (the leaders) הַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים (of the priests) וְהַלְוִיִּ֛ם (and the Levites) וְשָׂרֵֽי־ (and the heads) הָאָב֥וֹת (of the fathers) לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem) הַלִּשְׁכ֖וֹת (in the chambers) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

30  וְקִבְּלוּ֙ (And received) הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים (the priests) וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם (and the Levites) מִשְׁקַ֛ל (by weight) הַכֶּ֥סֶף (the silver) וְהַזָּהָ֖ב (and the gold) וְהַכֵּלִ֑ים (and the articles), לְהָבִ֥יא (to bring them) לִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (to Jerusalem) לְבֵ֥ית (to the house) אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃פ (of our God).

31  וַֽנִּסְעָ֞ה (And we departed) מִנְּהַ֣ר (from the river) אַֽהֲוָ֗א (Ahava) בִּשְׁנֵ֤ים (on the two) עָשָׂר֙ (and tenth) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן (first), לָלֶ֖כֶת (to go) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (to Jerusalem), וְיַד־ (and the hand) אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ (of our God) הָיְתָ֣ה (was) עָלֵ֔ינוּ (upon us) וַיַּ֨צִּילֵ֔נוּ (and He snatched us up) מִכַּ֥ף (from the hand) אוֹיֵ֛ב (of the enemy) וְאוֹרֵ֖ב (and the lier in wait) עַל־ (along) הַדָּֽרֶךְ׃ (the road).

Arrival in Jerusalem

32  וַנָּב֖וֹא (And we came) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (to Jerusalem) וַנֵּ֥שֶׁב (and stayed) שָׁ֖ם (there) יָמִ֥ים (days) שְׁלֹשָֽׁה׃ (three).

33  וּבַיּ֣וֹם (And on the day) הָרְבִיעִ֡י (fourth) נִשְׁקַ֣ל (it was weighed out) הַכֶּסֶף֩ (the silver) וְהַזָּהָ֨ב (and the gold) וְהַכֵּלִ֜ים (and the articles) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ (of our God) עַ֠ל (by) יַד־ (the hand) מְרֵמ֤וֹת (of Meremoth) בֶּן־ (son) אֽוּרִיָּה֙ (of Uriah) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), וְעִמּ֖וֹ (and with him) אֶלְעָזָ֣ר (Eleazar) בֶּן־ (son) פִּֽינְחָ֑ס (of Phinehas), וְעִמָּהֶ֞ם (and with them) יוֹזָבָ֧ד (Jozabad) בֶּן־ (son) יֵשׁ֛וּעַ (of Jeshua) וְנֽוֹעַדְיָ֥ה (and Noadiah) בֶן־ (son) בִּנּ֖וּי (of Binnui), הַלְוִיִּֽם׃ (the Levites), 34  בְּמִסְפָּ֥ר (by number) בְּמִשְׁקָ֖ל (by weight) לַכֹּ֑ל (of everything), וַיִּכָּתֵ֥ב (and was recorded) כָּֽל־ (all) הַמִּשְׁקָ֖ל (the weight) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִֽיא׃פ (that).

35  הַ֠בָּאִים (Those coming in) מֵֽהַשְּׁבִ֨י (of the captives)— בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) הַגּוֹלָ֜ה (of the exile)— הִקְרִ֥יבוּ (offered) עֹל֣וֹת׀ (burnt offerings) לֵאלֹהֵ֣י (to the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel): פָּרִ֨ים (Bulls) שְׁנֵים־ (two) עָשָׂ֤ר (and ten) עַל־ (for) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel), אֵילִ֣ים׀ (rams) תִּשְׁעִ֣ים (ninety) וְשִׁשָּׁ֗ה (and six), כְּבָשִׂים֙ (lambs) שִׁבְעִ֣ים (seventy) וְשִׁבְעָ֔ה (and seven), צְפִירֵ֥י (and male goats) חַטָּ֖את (as a sin offering) שְׁנֵ֣ים (two) עָשָׂ֑ר (and ten)— הַכֹּ֖ל (all) עוֹלָ֥ה (a burnt offering) לַיהוָֽה׃פ (to YHWH).

36  וַֽיִּתְּנ֣וּ׀ (And they delivered) אֶת־ (-) דָּתֵ֣י (the laws) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (of the king) לַאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנֵי֙ (to the satraps) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king) וּפַחֲו֖וֹת (and the governors) עֵ֣בֶר (beyond) הַנָּהָ֑ר (the River), וְנִשְּׂא֥וּ (and they lifted up) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֖ם (the people) וְאֶת־ (and) בֵּֽית־ (the house) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ס (of God).
