Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
where for forty days he endured temptations from the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were completed, he was famished.2where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."3The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."
Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man does not live by bread alone.'" 4Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone.'"
Then the devil led him up to a high place and showed him in a flash all the kingdoms of the world.5The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
And he said to him, "To you I will grant this whole realm--and the glory that goes along with it, for it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish.6And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.
So then, if you will worship me, all this will be yours."7If you worship me, it will all be yours."
Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'" 8Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'"
Then the devil brought him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,9The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here.
for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,'10For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;
and 'with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"11they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.'"12Jesus answered, "It is said: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
So when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time. 13When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
Then Jesus, in the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and news about him spread throughout the surrounding countryside.14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.
He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by all. 15He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read,16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,
and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, 18"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord' s favor." 19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.
Then he began to tell them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read."21He began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
All were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words coming out of his mouth. They said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"22All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.
Jesus said to them, "No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, 'Physician, heal yourself!' and say, 'What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, do here in your hometown too.'"23Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote this proverb to me: 'Physician, heal yourself!' And you will tell me, 'Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.'"
And he added, "I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.24"Truly I tell you," he continued, "no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's days, when the sky was shut up three and a half years, and there was a great famine over all the land.25I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.
Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.
And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."27And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed--only Naaman the Syrian."
When they heard this, all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage.28All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.
They got up, forced him out of the town, and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.29They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.
But he passed through the crowd and went on his way. 30But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
So he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he began to teach the people.31Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people.
They were amazed at his teaching, because he spoke with authority. 32They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.
Now in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,
"Ha! Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God."34"Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"
But Jesus rebuked him: "Silence! Come out of him!" Then, after the demon threw the man down in their midst, he came out of him without hurting him.35"Be quiet!" Jesus said sternly. "Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
They were all amazed and began to say to one another, "What's happening here? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!"36All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!"
So the news about him spread into all areas of the region. 37And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.38Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.
So he stood over her, commanded the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them. 39So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
As the sun was setting, all those who had any relatives sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus. He placed his hands on every one of them and healed them.40At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.
Demons also came out of many, crying out, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
The next morning Jesus departed and went to a deserted place. Yet the crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.
But Jesus said to them, "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, for that is what I was sent to do."43But he said, "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent."
So he continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea. 44And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
