Then the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate.1Then their whole assembly rose up and brought him before Pilate.
And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”2They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king."
Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”3So Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so."
So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no fault in this Man.”4Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no grounds for charging this man."
But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.”5But they kept insisting, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he started even to here."
When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean.6When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean.
And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.7Finding that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.
Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him.8Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by him.
Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing.9So he kept asking him questions, but Jesus did not answer him.
And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him.10The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.
Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.11Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked him, dressed him in bright clothing, and sent him back to Pilate.
That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.12That very day Herod and Pilate became friends. Previously, they had been enemies.
Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,13Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,
said to them, “You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him;14and said to them, "You have brought me this man as one who misleads the people. But in fact, after examining him in your presence, I have found no grounds to charge this man with those things you accuse him of.
no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him.15Neither has Herod, because he sent him back to us. Clearly, he has done nothing to deserve death.
I will therefore chastise Him and release Him16Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him."
(for it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast).17
And they all cried out at once, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas”—18Then they all cried out together, "Take this man away! Release Barabbas to us!"
who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder.19(He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)
Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them.20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again,
But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”21but they kept shouting, "Crucify! Crucify him!"
Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”22A third time he said to them, "Why? What has this man done wrong? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him."
But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed.23But they kept up the pressure, demanding with loud voices that he be crucified, and their voices won out.
So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested.24So Pilate decided to grant their demand
And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.25and released the one they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will.
Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.26As they led him away, they seized Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.
And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him.27A large crowd of people followed him, including women who were mourning and lamenting him.
But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.28But turning to them, Jesus said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and your children.
For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’29Look, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the women without children, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed!'
Then they will begin ‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’30Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'
For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”31For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"
There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death.32Two others--criminals--were also led away to be executed with him.
And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.33When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots.34Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing." And they divided his clothes and cast lots.
And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”35The people stood watching, and even the leaders were scoffing: "He saved others; let him save himself if this is God's Messiah, the Chosen One!"
The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine,36The soldiers also mocked him. They came offering him sour wine
and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”37and said, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"
And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.38An inscription was above him: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”39Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at him: "Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!"
But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?40But the other answered, rebuking him: "Don't you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment?
And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.”41We are punished justly, because we're getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong."
Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”43And he said to him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."
Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.44It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three,
Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.45because the sun's light failed. The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle.
And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last.46And Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit." Saying this, he breathed his last.
So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”47When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, "This man really was righteous!"
And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned.48All the crowds that had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, went home, striking their chests.
But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.49But all who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man.50There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin,
He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God.51who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God.
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.52He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus's body.
Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.53Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed.
That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.54It was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.
And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid.55The women who had come with him from Galilee followed along and observed the tomb and how his body was placed.
Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.56Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
