Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. | 1The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching. |
And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people. | 2The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the people. |
Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. | 3Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, who was numbered among the Twelve. |
So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. | 4He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police how he could hand him over to them. |
And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. | 5They were glad and agreed to give him silver. |
So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude. | 6So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray him to them when the crowd was not present. |
Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. | 7Then the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. |
And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.” | 8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." |
So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?” | 9"Where do you want us to prepare it?" they asked him. |
And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. | 10"Listen," he said to them, "when you've entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. |
Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ | 11Tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks you, "Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?"' |
Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.” | 12Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs. Make the preparations there." |
So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover. | 13So they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. |
When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. | 14When the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him. |
Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; | 15Then he said to them, "I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. |
for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” | 16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." |
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; | 17Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. |
for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” | 18For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." |
And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” | 19And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." |
Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. | 20In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. |
But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. | 21But look, the hand of the one betraying me is at the table with me. |
And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” | 22For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!" |
Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing. | 23So they began to argue among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do it. |
Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. | 24Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest. |
And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ | 25But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them have themselves called 'Benefactors.' |
But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. | 26It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest, and whoever leads, like the one serving. |
For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves. | 27For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn't it the one at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. |
“But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials. | 28You are those who stood by me in my trials. |
And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, | 29I bestow on you a kingdom, just as my Father bestowed one on me, |
that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” | 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. | 31"Simon, Simon, look out. Satan has asked to sift you like wheat. |
But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” | 32But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." |
But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.” | 33"Lord," he told him, "I'm ready to go with you both to prison and to death." |
Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.” | 34"I tell you, Peter," he said, "the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know me." |
And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?” So they said, “Nothing.” | 35He also said to them, "When I sent you out without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Not a thing," they said. |
Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. | 36Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn't have a sword should sell his robe and buy one. |
For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.” | 37For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in me: And he was counted among the lawless. Yes, what is written about me is coming to its fulfillment." |
So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.” | 38"Lord," they said, "look, here are two swords." "That is enough!" he told them. |
Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. | 39He went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. |
When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” | 40When he reached the place, he told them, "Pray that you may not fall into temptation." |
And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, | 41Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray, |
saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” | 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me--nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done." |
Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. | 43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. |
And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. | 44Being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. |
When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. | 45When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief. |
Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.” | 46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you won't fall into temptation." |
And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. | 47While he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him, |
But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” | 48but Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" |
When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” | 49When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" |
And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. | 50Then one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. |
But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. | 51But Jesus responded, "No more of this!" And touching his ear, he healed him. |
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? | 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? |
When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” | 53Every day while I was with you in the temple, you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour--and the dominion of darkness." |
Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed at a distance. | 54They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. Meanwhile Peter was following at a distance. |
Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. | 55They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. |
And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.” | 56When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, "This man was with him too." |
But he denied Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” | 57But he denied it: "Woman, I don't know him." |
And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” | 58After a little while, someone else saw him and said, "You're one of them too." "Man, I am not!" Peter said. |
Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean.” | 59About an hour later, another kept insisting, "This man was certainly with him, since he's also a Galilean." |
But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. | 60But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. |
And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” | 61Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." |
So Peter went out and wept bitterly. | 62And he went outside and wept bitterly. |
Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him. | 63The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating him. |
And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” | 64After blindfolding him, they kept asking, "Prophesy! Who was it that hit you?" |
And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him. | 65And they were saying many other blasphemous things to him. |
As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, | 66When daylight came, the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes, convened and brought him before their Sanhedrin. |
“If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. | 67They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he said to them, "If I do tell you, you will not believe. |
And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. | 68And if I ask you, you will not answer. |
Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.” | 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." |
Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.” | 70They all asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" And he said to them, "You say that I am." |
And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.” | 71"Why do we need any more testimony," they said, "since we've heard it ourselves from his mouth?" |
