1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum.

1When He had concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum.

2At that time the highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death.

2A centurion's slave, who was highly valued by him, was sick and about to die.

3When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave.

3When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to Him, requesting Him to come and save the life of his slave.

4So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said,

4When they reached Jesus, they pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy for You to grant this,

5“for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.”

5because he loves our nation and has built us a synagogue."

6So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor.

6Jesus went with them, and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell Him, "Lord, don't trouble Yourself, since I am not worthy to have You come under my roof.

7I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.

7That is why I didn't even consider myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be cured.

8I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”

8For I too am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes; and to another, 'Come!' and he comes; and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it."

9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”

9Jesus heard this and was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following Him, He said, "I tell you, I have not found so great a faith even in Israel!"

10And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed. Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son

10When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

11Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.

11Soon afterward He was on His way to a town called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd were traveling with Him.

12A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.

12Just as He neared the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was also with her.

13When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.

13When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, "Don't cry."

14Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.”

14Then He came up and touched the open coffin, and the pallbearers stopped. And He said, "Young man, I tell you, get up!"

15Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.

15The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.

16Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”

16Then fear came over everyone, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us," and "God has visited His people."

17And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside. Jesus and John the Baptist

17This report about Him went throughout Judea and all the vicinity.

18The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,

18Then John's disciples told him about all these things. So John summoned two of his disciples

19and he sent them to the Lord to ask him, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”

19and sent them to the Lord, asking, "Are You the One who is to come, or should we look for someone else?"

20John’s two disciples found Jesus and said to him, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?’”

20When the men reached Him, they said, "John the Baptist sent us to ask You, 'Are You the One who is to come, or should we look for someone else?'"

21At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.

21At that time Jesus healed many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and He granted sight to many blind people.

22Then he told John’s disciples, “Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard—the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”

22He replied to them, "Go and report to John the things you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news.

23 And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me. ”

23And anyone who is not offended because of Me is blessed."

24After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?

24After John's messengers left, He began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?

25 Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces.

25What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft robes? Look, those who are splendidly dressed and live in luxury are in royal palaces.

26 Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.

26What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.

27 John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’

27This is the one it is written about: Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You; he will prepare Your way before You.

28 I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!”

28I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John, but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

29When they heard this, all the people—even the tax collectors—agreed that God’s way was right, for they had been baptized by John.

29(And when all the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they acknowledged God's way of righteousness, because they had been baptized with John's baptism.

30But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism.

30But since the Pharisees and experts in the law had not been baptized by him, they rejected the plan of God for themselves.)

31 “To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them?

31"To what then should I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?

32 They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’

32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to each other: We played the flute for you, but you didn't dance; we sang a lament, but you didn't weep!

33 For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’

33For John the Baptist did not come eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, He has a demon!'

34 The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’

34The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

35 But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it. ” Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman

35Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children."

36One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat.

36Then one of the Pharisees invited Him to eat with him. He entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.

37When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.

37And a woman in the town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house. She brought an alabaster jar of fragrant oil

38Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.

38and stood behind Him at His feet, weeping, and began to wash His feet with her tears. She wiped His feet with the hair of her head, kissing them and anointing them with the fragrant oil.

39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”

39When the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, "This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching Him--she's a sinner!"

40Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.” “Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.

40Jesus replied to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you."" Teacher," he said, "say it."

41Then Jesus told him this story: “A man loaned money to two people—500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other.

41"A creditor had two debtors. One owed 500 denarii, and the other 50.

42 But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”

42Since they could not pay it back, he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more?"

43Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.” “That’s right,” Jesus said.

43Simon answered, "I suppose the one he forgave more." "You have judged correctly," He told him.

44Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

44Turning to the woman, He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she, with her tears, has washed My feet and wiped them with her hair.

45 You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet.

45You gave Me no kiss, but she hasn't stopped kissing My feet since I came in.

46 You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.

46You didn't anoint My head with olive oil, but she has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.

47 “I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”

47Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that's why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little."

48Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”

48Then He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."

49The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”

49Those who were at the table with Him began to say among themselves, "Who is this man who even forgives sins?"

50And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

50And He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."
