1 A wise son heeds his father’s discipline, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke. A wise son hears his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. A wise son <i>heareth</i> his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke. A wise son <i>accepts his</i> father’s discipline, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. 2 From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things, but the desire of the faithless is violence. From the fruit of his mouth a man eats what is good, but the desire of the treacherous is for violence. A man shall eat good by the fruit of <i>his</i> mouth: but the soul of the transgressors <i>shall eat</i> violence. From the fruit of a person’s mouth he enjoys good, But the desire of the treacherous is violence. From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things, but the unfaithful have an appetite for violence.
3 He who guards his mouth protects his life, but the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin. Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: <i>but</i> he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. One who guards his mouth protects his life; One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.
4 The slacker craves yet has nothing, but the soul of the diligent is fully satisfied. The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied. The soul of the sluggard desireth, and <i>hath</i> nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. The soul of the lazy one craves and <i>gets</i> nothing, But the soul of the diligent is made prosperous. A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.
5 The righteous hate falsehood, but the wicked bring shame and disgrace. The righteous hates falsehood, but the wicked brings shame and disgrace. A righteous <i>man</i> hateth lying: but a wicked <i>man</i> is loathsome, and cometh to shame. A righteous person hates a false statement, But a wicked person acts disgustingly and shamefully. The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked make themselves a stench and bring shame on themselves.
6 Righteousness guards the man of integrity, but wickedness undermines the sinner. Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless, but sin overthrows the wicked. Righteousness keepeth <i>him that is</i> upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner. Righteousness guards the one whose way is blameless, But wickedness brings the sinner to ruin. Righteousness guards the person of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.
7 One pretends to be rich, but has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. There is that maketh himself rich, yet <i>hath</i> nothing: <i>there is</i> that maketh himself poor, yet <i>hath</i> great riches. There is one who pretends to be rich but has nothing; <i>Another</i> pretends to be poor, but has great wealth. One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
8 Riches may ransom a man’s life, but a poor man hears no threat. The ransom of a man’s life is his wealth, but a poor man hears no threat. The ransom of a man's life <i>are</i> his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke. The ransom of a person’s life is his wealth, But the poor hears no rebuke. A person’s riches may ransom their life, but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes.
9 The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is extinguished. The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked will be put out. The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out. The light of the righteous rejoices, But the lamp of the wicked goes out. The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.
10 Arrogance leads only to strife, but wisdom is with the well-advised. By insolence comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom. Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised <i>is</i> wisdom. Through overconfidence comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel. Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.
11 Dishonest wealth will dwindle, but what is earned through hard work will be multiplied. Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. Wealth <i>gotten</i> by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase. Wealth <i>obtained</i> from nothing dwindles, But one who gathers by labor increases <i>it.</i> Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life. Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but <i>when</i> the desire cometh, <i>it is</i> a tree of life. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life. 13 He who despises instruction will pay the penalty, but the one who respects a command will be rewarded. Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded. Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded. One who despises the word will do badly, But one who fears the commandment will be rewarded. Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it, but whoever respects a command is rewarded.
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning one from the snares of death. The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death. The law of the wise <i>is</i> a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, To turn aside from the snares of death. 15 Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the faithless is difficult. Good sense wins favor, but the way of the treacherous is their ruin. Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors <i>is</i> hard. Good understanding produces favor, But the way of the treacherous is their own disaster. Good judgment wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful leads to their destruction.
16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool displays his folly. Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly. Every prudent <i>man</i> dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open <i>his</i> folly. Every prudent person acts with knowledge, But a fool displays foolishness. All who are prudent act with knowledge, but fools expose their folly.
17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. 18 Poverty and shame come to him who ignores discipline, but whoever heeds correction is honored. Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is honored. Poverty and shame <i>shall be to</i> him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured. Poverty and shame <i>will come</i> to one who neglects discipline, But one who complies with rebuke will be honored. Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.
19 Desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but turning from evil is detestable to fools. A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools. The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but <i>it is</i> abomination to fools to depart from evil. Desire realized is sweet to the soul, But it is an abomination to fools to turn away from evil. A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil.
20 He who walks with the wise will become wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed. Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. He that walketh with wise <i>men</i> shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. One who walks with wise people will be wise, But a companion of fools will suffer harm. Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
21 Disaster pursues sinners, but prosperity is the reward of the righteous. Disaster pursues sinners, but the righteous are rewarded with good. Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed. Adversity pursues sinners, But the righteous will be rewarded with prosperity. Trouble pursues the sinner, but the righteous are rewarded with good things.
22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is passed to the righteous. A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous. A good <i>man</i> leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner <i>is</i> laid up for the just. A good person leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, And the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous. 23 Abundant food is in the fallow ground of the poor, but without justice it is swept away. The fallow ground of the poor would yield much food, but it is swept away through injustice. Much food <i>is in</i> the tillage of the poor: but there is <i>that is</i> destroyed for want of judgment. Abundant food <i>is in</i> the uncultivated ground of the poor, But it is swept away by injustice. An unplowed field produces food for the poor, but injustice sweeps it away.
24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently. Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. He who withholds his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently. Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.
25 A righteous man eats to his heart’s content, but the stomach of the wicked is empty. The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want. The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want. The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, But the stomach of the wicked is in need. The righteous eat to their hearts’ content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.
