1 For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old. O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil. 2 With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out. you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; <i>How</i> thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; <i>how</i> thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out. You with Your own hand drove out the nations; Then You planted them; You afflicted the peoples, Then You let them go free. With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish.
3 For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them. for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them. For by their own sword they did not possess the land, And their own arm did not save them, But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, For You favored them. It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.
4 You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob. You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob. You are my King, God; Command victories for Jacob. You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.
5 Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. Through You we will push back our adversaries; Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us. Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
6 For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me. For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me. I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
7 For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us. But You have saved us from our adversaries, And You have put to shame those who hate us. but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
8 In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. 9 But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies. But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies. Yet You have rejected <i>us</i> and brought us to dishonor, And do not go out with our armies. But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.
10 You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us. You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves. You cause us to turn back from the enemy; And those who hate us have taken spoils for themselves. You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.
11 You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations. You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. Thou hast given us like sheep <i>appointed</i> for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen. You turn us over to be eaten like sheep, And have scattered us among the nations. You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.
12 You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale. You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase <i>thy wealth</i> by their price. You sell Your people cheaply, And have not profited by their sale. You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.
13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us. You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. You make us an <i>object of</i> reproach to our neighbors, <i>Of</i> scoffing and ridicule to those around us. You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
14 You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. 15 All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face, All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face My confusion <i>is</i> continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me, All day long my dishonor is before me And I am covered with my humiliation, I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame
16 at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge. at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger. Because of the voice of one who taunts and reviles, Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger. at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
17 All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. 18 Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way; Our heart has not turned back, And our steps have not deviated from Your way, Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness. yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death. Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals And covered us with deep darkness. 23 Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever. Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! 24 Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression? Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? 25 For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth. For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. 26 Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion. Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love! Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake. Rise up, be our help, And redeem us because of Your mercy. Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.
