Berean Study Bible Paul’s Greeting to TimothyPaul begins by identifying himself as an apostle, meaning “one who is sent,” an office entrusted to him by the risen Christ. Though not among the original Twelve, he was personally called by Jesus on the road to Damascus and commissioned to proclaim the gospel, especially among the Gentiles. His authority rested on Christ’s appointment rather than human recognition. Eph 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,… by the command of God our Savior Paul’s ministry came by God’s direct will and authority. God is the Savior who delivers His people from sin and carries out His saving purpose through the gospel. Paul wrote and served as one sent under divine command. Tit 1:3 In His own time He has made His word evident… and of Christ Jesus our hope, Jesus Christ is the believer’s sure hope because He died, rose again, and will fulfill God’s promise of eternal life. In Him, Christians have confidence in salvation, resurrection, and the future glory God has prepared. Col 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles… To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Timothy was Paul’s trusted coworker, likely brought to faith and trained under Paul’s ministry. A native of Lystra, he had a Jewish mother and a Greek father, enabling him to serve effectively among both Jewish and Gentile believers. Paul had left him in Ephesus to confront false teaching and help establish order in the church. Calling him a true child expresses both genuine faith and the close spiritual bond formed through shared ministry. Tit 1:4 To Titus, my true child in our common faith: … Grace, mercy, and peace Paul asks God to supply Timothy with grace for ministry, mercy amid weakness and opposition, and peace rooted in reconciliation with God. These blessings would strengthen Timothy as he carried out difficult responsibilities in Ephesus. 2Jn 1:3 Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father… from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. The blessings come jointly from God the Father and Christ Jesus, affirming Christ’s divine authority and lordship. Timothy’s work rested not on Paul’s support alone, but on the authority and provision of the Father and the risen Messiah. 2Co 1:2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father…
Correcting False TeachersPaul had left Timothy with a personal charge while continuing his work among the churches of Macedonia, including Philippi and Thessalonica. Timothy served as Paul’s trusted representative during a critical period for the church in Ephesus. Act 20:1-2 When the uproar had ended, Paul sent for the disciples.… you should stay on at Ephesus Ephesus was a major commercial and religious center in the Roman province of Asia, famous for the temple of Artemis. Paul had spent substantial time establishing the church there, making it an important base for the spread of the gospel throughout the region. 1Co 16:8-9 But I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost,… to instruct certain men not to teach false doctrines Specific teachers in the Ephesian church were spreading ideas contrary to the apostolic message. Timothy was to confront their teaching and protect the congregation from doctrines that would distort the gospel and undermine sound instruction. Tit 1:10-11 For many are rebellious and full of empty talk… or devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, Some in Ephesus were absorbed in speculative tales and ancestral records, likely connected with Jewish traditions and claims of special religious insight. These matters did not rest on apostolic truth and often produced pride, controversy, and distraction from Christ. Tit 1:14 will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands… which promote speculation Such teaching stirred arguments and unanswered questions rather than strengthening faith. The church could become occupied with disputes that brought confusion instead of spiritual growth. 1Ti 6:20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you.… rather than the stewardship of God’s work, God had entrusted the church with the faithful proclamation and administration of the gospel. That responsibility required sound teaching and the building up of believers, not attention to religious novelties. Eph 3:2 Surely you have heard about the stewardship of God’s grace… which is by faith. God’s saving work is received and carried out through faith in Christ. Faith rests on God’s revealed truth, while speculative teaching turns attention away from the certainty of the gospel. Gal 3:11 Now it is clear that no one is justified before God… The goal of our instruction Paul directs Timothy to guard the church at Ephesus against false teaching and to teach the truth entrusted to the apostles. Christian instruction is meant to shape conduct as well as belief. Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.… is the love The intended result is love for God and for fellow believers, marked by self-sacrifice, faithfulness, and obedience rather than mere religious knowledge. 1Co 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love… that comes from a pure heart, Such love arises from an inner life cleansed from sinful motives and devoted to God. Outward service cannot replace integrity before Him. 2Ti 2:22 Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness… a clear conscience, Believers are to live without deliberate disobedience, having their conduct governed by God’s truth. A conscience burdened by unrepented sin weakens both faith and ministry. 1Ti 3:9 They must hold to the mystery of the faith… and a sincere faith. Genuine faith rests in Christ and His promises without hypocrisy. It produces a life consistent with the gospel Paul commanded Timothy to preserve. 2Ti 1:5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first dwelt…… Some have strayed from these ways Certain teachers in Ephesus had abandoned the love, pure heart, good conscience, and sincere faith Paul had just described. Instead of guarding the truth entrusted to the church, they departed from sound teaching and led others away from the gospel. 2Pe 2:15 They have left the straight way and wandered off… and turned aside to empty talk. Their empty talk—teaching lacking substance and truth—produced speculation and controversy rather than godly instruction and spiritual maturity. Words detached from the truth of God’s revelation may sound impressive, but they do not build up believers or advance faith. 1Ti 6:20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you.… They want to be teachers of the law, Certain men in the Ephesian church sought the authority associated with instructing others in the Mosaic Law. Like Jewish scribes and rabbis, they desired recognition as guides in religious matters, yet their teaching distorted the gospel by turning attention from faith in Christ to speculative arguments and legal demands. Rom 2:17-20 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law… but they do not understand what they are saying Their familiarity with the Law did not mean they understood its purpose. The Law reveals God’s holiness, exposes sin, and demonstrates humanity’s need for redemption; it does not provide justification apart from Christ. Without that understanding, their instruction confused believers and departed from the truth entrusted to the church. 1Co 8:2 The one who thinks he knows something… or that which they so confidently assert. They spoke with certainty while lacking sound knowledge and proper judgment. Their confidence gave false teaching an appearance of authority, making it especially harmful among believers who depended on faithful instruction in the gospel. Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen… Now we know that the law is good, God’s law is holy, righteous, and beneficial because it expresses His moral character and His will for human conduct. Given through Moses to Israel, it established standards for worship, justice, purity, and covenant faithfulness. The law itself was never the problem; sin is the problem. Jesus upheld the law and fulfilled its demands perfectly. Rom 7:12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy… if one uses it legitimately. The law must be used according to God’s purpose. It exposes sin, restrains wrongdoing, and shows humanity’s need for forgiveness and salvation through Christ. It is not a means by which sinners earn acceptance with God, nor should it be distorted into legalistic rules or speculative teachings. Properly understood, the law condemns sin while directing believers toward righteous living under the grace of God. Gal 3:24-25 So the law became our guardian to lead us to Christ,… We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous, God’s law exposes sin and restrains wrongdoing. Those who live in faithful obedience are not its target, because their conduct agrees with the moral order the law upholds. 1Pe 2:14 or to governors as those sent by him to punish… but for the lawless and rebellious, It stands against those who cast off God’s authority and refuse rightful restraint. Their rebellion is not merely social disorder but defiance of the Lord who establishes what is good and evil. Deu 21:18-21 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son… for the ungodly and sinful, The law addresses lives marked by disregard for God and persistent violation of His commands. It reveals humanity’s guilt and need for redemption. 1Pe 4:18 And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved”… for the unholy and profane, It condemns those who treat holy things as common and live without reverence for God. What God sets apart must not be dishonored. 2Ti 3:2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money… for killers of father or mother, Such violence overturns the God-given order of the family and violates the duty to honor parents. It displays the severe corruption the law confronts. Exo 21:15 Whoever strikes his father or mother… for murderers, The law condemns the unlawful taking of human life, since every person bears God’s image. It upholds justice and protects life from violent evil. Num 35:16-18 If, however, anyone strikes a person with an iron object… for the sexually immoral, God’s design reserves sexual relations for marriage between a man and a woman. Many converts in the Roman world came from cultures marked by prostitution, adultery, and other sexual practices contrary to God’s commands. 1Co 6:9-10 Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral… for homosexuals, Same-sex relations were present in the Greco-Roman world, but the church upheld the biblical order established in creation and rejected conduct that departed from it. Lev 18:22 You must not lie with a man as with a woman;…… for slave traders Those who captured, sold, or exploited human beings stood under condemnation. Though slavery was widespread in the ancient world, people bear God’s image and must not be treated as property for profit. Exo 21:16 Whoever kidnaps another man must be put to death,… and liars and perjurers, Falsehood corrupts justice, destroys trust, and violates God’s command against bearing false witness. God’s people are called to speak truthfully. Exo 20:16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. and for anyone else who is averse to sound teaching The list reaches beyond specific sins to include every practice and belief opposed to the apostolic gospel. Sound teaching guards the church from moral rebellion and false doctrine. 2Ti 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not tolerate… that agrees with the glorious gospel Paul’s instruction accords with the good news (Greek: euangelion) of Jesus Christ, whose death and resurrection provide salvation and reveal God’s glory. Sound doctrine must remain consistent with that gospel. 2Co 4:4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers,… of the blessed God, The gospel originates with God, who is perfect in holiness, joy, and sufficiency. It displays His grace toward sinners while upholding His righteousness. Rom 9:5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them… with which I have been entrusted. God appointed Paul to proclaim and defend the gospel as an apostle. His ministry carried the responsibility of faithfully delivering God’s message without alteration. 1Th 2:4 Instead, we speak as those approved by God…
God’s Grace to PaulPaul’s gratitude centers on Christ, whose authority and grace govern his life and ministry. Though Paul once opposed the church, he now recognizes Jesus as the Lord who redeemed and directed him. Rom 1:8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you,… who has strengthened me, The endurance, courage, and ability required for Paul’s apostolic work came from Christ. His ministry depended not on natural ability or past religious standing, but on the sustaining power of the Lord. 2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,… that He considered me faithful Christ entrusted Paul with responsibility after transforming him by grace. Paul’s former hostility toward believers did not prevent God from making him a faithful servant. 1Co 4:2 Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. and appointed me to service. Paul received his ministry by divine appointment. His work as an apostle was a calling to serve Christ and His church, not a position gained through personal merit. Act 26:16 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared… I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man; Before meeting Christ, Paul openly opposed Jesus and sought to destroy the church. He entered homes, arrested believers, and approved of violence against those who confessed Christ. His hostility arose from zeal for the traditions he believed Christianity threatened, yet his actions placed him in direct opposition to God’s work. Act 26:10-11 And that is what I did in Jerusalem. With authority… yet because I had acted in ignorance and unbelief, Paul did not know Jesus as the risen Messiah and therefore treated His followers as enemies. His ignorance did not make him innocent, but it explains why God dealt with him in mercy rather than immediate judgment. On the road to Damascus, the Lord confronted Paul, revealed His identity, and redirected the persecutor into an apostle. Act 3:17 And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance… I was shown mercy. God forgave Paul and appointed him to serve despite his former rebellion. His calling demonstrated that salvation and ministry rest on God’s grace, not a person’s past record or worthiness. 2Co 4:1 Therefore, since God in His mercy has given us… And the grace of our Lord overflowed to me, Paul recalls the abundant mercy Christ showed him despite his former violence against the church. His conversion turned a persecutor of believers into an apostle entrusted with the gospel, demonstrating that God’s grace is sufficient to forgive and transform even the most hostile sinner. 1Co 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me… along with the faith and love God’s grace did not merely pardon Paul; it produced faith in Christ and love for those he had once harmed. These qualities marked the new life God gave him and became evident in his service to the churches. Col 1:4 because we have heard about your faith in Christ Jesus… that are in Christ Jesus. Faith and love have their source in union with Christ. Through Him, believers receive a new standing before God and a new pattern of life shaped by trust in Him and love for His people. 2Ti 1:13 Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching… This is a trustworthy saying, Paul introduces a settled truth worthy of confidence, likely echoing a confession known among the early churches. 1Ti 3:1 This is a trustworthy saying: If anyone aspires to be… worthy of full acceptance: Every believer is called to receive it without reservation because it stands at the heart of the gospel. 1Ti 4:9 This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance. Christ Jesus came into the world The eternal Son entered human history in the incarnation, fulfilling God’s promise to send the Messiah. Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.… to save sinners, His coming had a definite purpose: to redeem those separated from God by sin through His death and resurrection. Luk 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” of whom I am the worst. Remembering his former persecution of Christians, Paul openly acknowledges the depth of his sin and the mercy that transformed him from an enemy of the church into an apostle. 1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles and am unworthy… But for this very reason I was shown mercy, Paul’s former violence against believers did not place him beyond God’s forgiveness. God spared and restored him, making clear that salvation rests on divine mercy rather than human worthiness. Tit 3:5 He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done… so that in me, the worst of sinners, Paul remembered the seriousness of his rebellion against Christ and the church. His past magnified the extent of the grace he received. 1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles and am unworthy… Christ Jesus might display His perfect patience Christ did not abandon Paul in his unbelief but confronted him, called him, and appointed him for service. His patience endured until Paul was brought to repentance and faith. 2Pe 3:15 Consider also that our Lord’s patience brings salvation… as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life. Paul’s conversion demonstrates that Christ saves sinners who trust in Him. Eternal life is given to all who believe, regardless of their former guilt. 1Pe 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered… Now to the King eternal, God reigns over all creation and stands above time, having no beginning or end. His kingdom is permanent, and His rule never changes. Jer 10:10 But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God… immortal, God is untouched by death, decay, or corruption. His life is eternal in Himself, unlike all created beings. 1Ti 6:16 He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light.… and invisible, Though God makes Himself known through His works, His Word, and supremely through Jesus Christ, He is not limited by a visible physical form. He is spirit and cannot be contained by creation. Col 1:15 The Son is the image of the invisible God… the only God, There is no rival to the God revealed in Scripture. The gods worshiped among the nations were false, but the Lord alone is Creator, Savior, and Judge. Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You… be honor and glory All reverence and praise belong to Him because of who He is and all He has done. Paul closes his testimony of mercy and salvation by directing glory to God rather than to himself. Rev 5:13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth… forever and ever. God’s reign and worthiness of worship will endure without end. Heb 1:8 But about the Son He says: “Your throne, O God,… Amen. This affirms the certainty and truth of the praise offered to God; “Amen” means “truly” or “so be it.” Rom 16:27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ!… Timothy, my child, Paul speaks as Timothy’s spiritual father and trusted mentor. Timothy had served alongside him and had been shaped for ministry under his guidance. 2Ti 1:2 To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and… I entrust you with this command Paul places Timothy under a solemn charge to guard the church at Ephesus, confront false teaching, and preserve sound doctrine. 2Ti 4:1-2 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,… in keeping with the previous prophecies about you, Timothy’s ministry had been publicly affirmed by prophetic guidance when he was set apart for service. Those confirmations testified that his calling came from God. 2Ti 1:6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame… so that by them you may fight the good fight, Strengthened by that calling, Timothy was to stand firmly against error and corruption in the church. His ministry involved a real spiritual conflict, carried out through faithful teaching, godly conduct, and perseverance. 2Ti 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race… holding on to faith and a good conscience, Believers are to remain steadfast in the truth of the gospel while living with moral integrity before God. Faith and conscience belong together: sound belief must shape conduct, and a violated conscience weakens a person’s ability to remain faithful. 1Ti 3:9 They must hold to the mystery of the faith… which some have rejected Some in the church had knowingly cast aside the moral and doctrinal restraint God required. Rather than correcting their error, they chose teaching and conduct contrary to the faith they had professed. 1Ti 5:12 and thus will incur judgment because they are setting aside… and thereby shipwrecked their faith. Like a vessel ruined through careless navigation, their departure from truth and a clean conscience brought spiritual collapse. Paul’s warning shows that abandoning either sound doctrine or obedient living places faith in grave danger. 2Ti 2:18 They say that the resurrection has already occurred… Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, Hymenaeus and Alexander had abandoned sound doctrine and become examples of those who rejected the faith they once professed. Their names show that false teaching was a real threat within the early church. 2Ti 2:17-18 and the talk of such men will spread like gangrene.… whom I have handed over to Satan Paul removed them from the fellowship of believers, placing them outside the church’s protection and discipline under the consequences of their rebellion. 1Co 5:5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction… to be taught not to blaspheme. Their teaching dishonored God and corrupted the truth of the gospel. The purpose of this severe discipline was correction, leading them to cease their sin and return to the faith. 2Ti 2:24-25 And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
