Abishag Cares for David

1  וְהַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (And King) דָּוִד֙ (David) זָקֵ֔ן (was old), בָּ֖א (entering) בַּיָּמִ֑ים (into the days). וַיְכַסֻּ֙הוּ֙ (And they covered him) בַּבְּגָדִ֔ים (with garments), וְלֹ֥א (not) יִחַ֖ם (could get warm) לֽוֹ׃ (he). 2  וַיֹּ֧אמְרוּ (And said) ל֣וֹ (to him) עֲבָדָ֗יו (his servants), יְבַקְשׁ֞וּ (Let them seek) לַאדֹנִ֤י (for our lord) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) נַעֲרָ֣ה (a young woman), בְתוּלָ֔ה (a virgin), וְעָֽמְדָה֙ (and let her stand) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), וּתְהִי־ (and let her) ל֖וֹ (for him) סֹכֶ֑נֶת (care), וְשָׁכְבָ֣ה (and let her lie) בְחֵיקֶ֔ךָ (in your bosom), וְחַ֖ם (that may be warm) לַאדֹנִ֥י (our lord) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king).

3  וַיְבַקְשׁוּ֙ (And they sought) נַעֲרָ֣ה (a young woman) יָפָ֔ה (lovely) בְּכֹ֖ל (throughout all) גְּב֣וּל (the territory) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַֽיִּמְצְא֗וּ (and they found) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִישַׁג֙ (Abishag) הַשּׁ֣וּנַמִּ֔ית (the Shunammitess) וַיָּבִ֥אוּ (and brought) אֹתָ֖הּ (her) לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (to the king). 4  וְהַֽנַּעֲרָ֖ה (And the young woman was) יָפָ֣ה (lovely) עַד־ (even) מְאֹ֑ד (exceedingly), וַתְּהִ֨י (and she) לַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (for the king) סֹכֶ֙נֶת֙ (cared) וַתְּשָׁ֣רְתֵ֔הוּ (and served him), וְהַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (and the king) לֹ֥א (not) יְדָעָֽהּ׃ (did know her).

Adonijah Usurps the Kingdom

5  וַאֲדֹנִיָּ֧ה (And Adonijah) בֶן־ (son) חַגִּ֛ית (of Haggith) מִתְנַשֵּׂ֥א (exalted himself), לֵאמֹ֖ר (saying), אֲנִ֣י (I) אֶמְלֹ֑ךְ (will be king). וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And he prepared) ל֗וֹ (for himself) רֶ֚כֶב (a chariot) וּפָ֣רָשִׁ֔ים (and horsemen) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֥ים (and fifty) אִ֖ישׁ (men) רָצִ֥ים (to run) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before his face).

6  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) עֲצָב֨וֹ (had rebuked him) אָבִ֤יו (his father) מִיָּמָיו֙ (at any time) לֵאמֹ֔ר (by saying), מַדּ֖וּעַ (Why) כָּ֣כָה (so) עָשִׂ֑יתָ (have you done)? וְגַם־ (And also) ה֤וּא (He was) טֽוֹב־ (good) תֹּ֙אַר֙ (in form) מְאֹ֔ד (very), וְאֹת֥וֹ (and him) יָלְדָ֖ה (she had borne) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) אַבְשָׁלֽוֹם׃ (Absalom).

7  וַיִּהְי֣וּ (And were) דְבָרָ֔יו (his words) עִ֚ם (with) יוֹאָ֣ב (Joab) בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָ֔ה (of Zeruiah) וְעִ֖ם (and with) אֶבְיָתָ֣ר (Abiathar) הַכֹּהֵ֑ן (the priest), וַֽיַּעְזְר֔וּ (and they helped) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) אֲדֹנִיָּֽה׃ (Adonijah). 8  וְצָד֣וֹק (And Zadok) הַ֠כֹּהֵן (the priest), וּבְנָיָ֨הוּ (and Benaiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֜ע (of Jehoiada), וְנָתָ֤ן (and Nathan) הַנָּבִיא֙ (the prophet), וְשִׁמְעִ֣י (and Shimei), וְרֵעִ֔י (and Rei), וְהַגִּבּוֹרִ֖ים (and the mighty men) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) לְדָוִ֑ד (to David), לֹ֥א (not) הָי֖וּ (were) עִם־ (with) אֲדֹנִיָּֽהוּ׃ (Adonijah).

9  וַיִּזְבַּ֣ח (And sacrificed) אֲדֹנִיָּ֗הוּ (Adonijah) צֹ֤אן (sheep) וּבָקָר֙ (and oxen) וּמְרִ֔יא (and fattened cattle) עִ֚ם (by) אֶ֣בֶן (of Zoheleth) הַזֹּחֶ֔לֶת (that), אֲשֶׁר־ (which is) אֵ֖צֶל (by) עֵ֣ין (En-) רֹגֵ֑ל (rogel). וַיִּקְרָ֗א (And he called) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֶחָיו֙ (his brothers) בְּנֵ֣י (sons) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king), וּלְכָל־ (and all) אַנְשֵׁ֥י (the men) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) עַבְדֵ֥י (servants) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king). 10  וְֽאֶת־ (And) נָתָן֩ (Nathan) הַנָּבִ֨יא (the prophet), וּבְנָיָ֜הוּ (and Benaiah), וְאֶת־ (and) הַגִּבּוֹרִ֛ים (the mighty men), וְאֶת־ (or) שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה (Solomon) אָחִ֖יו (his brother), לֹ֥א (not) קָרָֽא׃ (he did call).

Nathan and Bathsheba before David

11  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And spoke) נָתָ֗ן (Nathan) אֶל־ (to) בַּת־ (Bath-) שֶׁ֤בַע (sheba) אֵם־ (the mother) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (of Solomon), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הֲל֣וֹא (Have not) שָׁמַ֔עַתְּ (you heard) כִּ֥י (that) מָלַ֖ךְ (has become king) אֲדֹנִיָּ֣הוּ (Adonijah) בֶן־ (son) חַגִּ֑ית (of Haggith), וַאֲדֹנֵ֥ינוּ (and our lord) דָוִ֖ד (David) לֹ֥א (not) יָדָֽע׃ (does know it)? 12  וְעַתָּ֕ה (And) לְכִ֛י (come), אִיעָצֵ֥ךְ (let me advise you) נָ֖א (please) עֵצָ֑ה (with counsel), וּמַלְּטִי֙ (that may save) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשֵׁ֔ךְ (your own life) וְאֶת־ (and) נֶ֥פֶשׁ (the life) בְּנֵ֖ךְ (of your son) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (Solomon). 13  לְכִ֞י (Go) וּבֹ֣אִי׀ (and enter in) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) דָּוִ֗ד (David) וְאָמַ֤רְתְּ (and say) אֵלָיו֙ (to him), הֲלֹֽא־ (Did not) אַתָּ֞ה (you) אֲדֹנִ֣י (my lord) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (the king) נִשְׁבַּ֤עְתָּ (swear) לַאֲמָֽתְךָ֙ (to your maidservant), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), כִּֽי־ (Surely) שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה (Solomon) בְנֵךְ֙ (your son) יִמְלֹ֣ךְ (shall reign) אַחֲרַ֔י (after me), וְה֖וּא (and he) יֵשֵׁ֣ב (shall sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסְאִ֑י (my throne)? וּמַדּ֖וּעַ (And why) מָלַ֥ךְ (has become king) אֲדֹנִיָֽהוּ׃ (Adonijah)? 14  הִנֵּ֗ה (Behold), עוֹדָ֛ךְ (while you) מְדַבֶּ֥רֶת (are still talking) שָׁ֖ם (there) עִם־ (with) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), וַאֲנִי֙ (and I) אָב֣וֹא (will come in) אַחֲרַ֔יִךְ (after you) וּמִלֵּאתִ֖י (and confirm) אֶת־ (-) דְּבָרָֽיִךְ׃ (your words).

15  וַתָּבֹ֨א (And went in) בַת־ (Bath-) שֶׁ֤בֶע (sheba) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) הַחַ֔דְרָה (into the chamber). וְהַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (And the king) זָקֵ֣ן (was old), מְאֹ֑ד (very) וַֽאֲבִישַׁג֙ (and Abishag) הַשּׁ֣וּנַמִּ֔ית (the Shunammitess) מְשָׁרַ֖ת (was serving) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king). 16  וַתִּקֹּ֣ד (And bowed) בַּת־ (Bath-) שֶׁ֔בַע (sheba) וַתִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ (bowed herself low) לַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (to the king). וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king), מַה־ (What is) לָּֽךְ׃ (for you)?

17  וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And she said) ל֗וֹ (to him), אֲדֹנִי֙ (My lord), אַתָּ֨ה (you) נִשְׁבַּ֜עְתָּ (swore) בַּֽיהוָ֤ה (by YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) לַֽאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ (to your maidservant), כִּֽי־ (Surely) שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה (Solomon) בְנֵ֖ךְ (your son) יִמְלֹ֣ךְ (shall reign) אַחֲרָ֑י (after me), וְה֖וּא (and he) יֵשֵׁ֥ב (shall sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסְאִֽי׃ (my throne). 18  וְעַתָּ֕ה (And now), הִנֵּ֥ה (behold), אֲדֹנִיָּ֖ה (Adonijah) מָלָ֑ךְ (has become king). וְעַתָּ֛ה (And), אֲדֹנִ֥י (my lord) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king), לֹ֥א (not) יָדָֽעְתָּ׃ (you do know about it). 19  וַ֠יִּזְבַּח (And He has sacrificed) שׁ֥וֹר (oxen) וּֽמְרִיא־ (and fattened cattle) וְצֹאן֮ (and sheep) לָרֹב֒ (in abundance), וַיִּקְרָא֙ (and he has called) לְכָל־ (all) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king), וּלְאֶבְיָתָר֙ (and Abiathar) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), וּלְיֹאָ֖ב (and Joab) שַׂ֣ר (the commander) הַצָּבָ֑א (of the army). וְלִשְׁלֹמֹ֥ה (And Solomon) עַבְדְּךָ֖ (your servant) לֹ֥א (not) קָרָֽא׃ (he has invited). 20  וְאַתָּה֙ (And you), אֲדֹנִ֣י (my lord) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), עֵינֵ֥י (the eyes) כָל־ (of all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) עָלֶ֑יךָ (are on you), לְהַגִּ֣יד (that you should tell) לָהֶ֔ם (them) מִ֗י (who) יֵשֵׁ֛ב (will sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסֵּ֥א (the throne) אֲדֹנִֽי־ (of my lord) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) אַחֲרָֽיו׃ (after him). 21  וְהָיָ֕ה (And it will come to pass), כִּשְׁכַ֥ב (in the resting) אֲדֹנִֽי־ (on my lord) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֑יו (his fathers), וְהָיִ֗יתִי (that will be counted) אֲנִ֛י (I) וּבְנִ֥י (and my son) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon) חַטָּאִֽים׃ (as sinful).

22  וְהִנֵּ֛ה (And behold), עוֹדֶ֥נָּה (while she) מְדַבֶּ֖רֶת (was still talking) עִם־ (with) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), וְנָתָ֥ן (and Nathan) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) בָּֽא׃ (came in). 23  וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ (And they told) לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הִנֵּ֖ה (Behold), נָתָ֣ן (Nathan) הַנָּבִ֑יא (the prophet). וַיָּבֹא֙ (And he came in) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֧חוּ (and he bowed low) לַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (before the king) עַל־ (with) אַפָּ֖יו (his nose) אָֽרְצָה׃ (to the ground).

24  וַיֹּאמֶר֮ (And said) נָתָן֒ (Nathan), אֲדֹנִ֣י (My lord) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), אַתָּ֣ה (you) אָמַ֔רְתָּ (have said), אֲדֹנִיָּ֖הוּ (Adonijah) יִמְלֹ֣ךְ (shall reign) אַחֲרָ֑י (after me), וְה֖וּא (and he) יֵשֵׁ֥ב (shall sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסְאִֽי׃ (my throne)’? 25  כִּ֣י׀ (for) יָרַ֣ד (he has gone down) הַיּ֗וֹם (today) וַ֠יִּזְבַּח (and has sacrificed) שׁ֥וֹר (oxen) וּֽמְרִיא־ (and fattened cattle) וְצֹאן֮ (and sheep) לָרֹב֒ (in abundance), וַיִּקְרָא֩ (and he has called) לְכָל־ (to all) בְּנֵ֨י (the sons) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (of the king) וּלְשָׂרֵ֤י (and the commanders) הַצָּבָא֙ (of the army), וּלְאֶבְיָתָ֣ר (and Abiathar) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest). וְהִנָּ֛ם (And behold), אֹכְלִ֥ים (they are eating) וְשֹׁתִ֖ים (and drinking) לְפָנָ֑יו (before his face) וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and saying), יְחִ֖י (Long live) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (King) אֲדֹנִיָּֽהוּ׃ (Adonijah). 26  וְלִ֣י (And me) אֲנִֽי־ (me) עַ֠בְדֶּךָ (your servant), וּלְצָדֹ֨ק (and Zadok) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest), וְלִבְנָיָ֧הוּ (and Benaiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֛ע (of Jehoiada), וְלִשְׁלֹמֹ֥ה (and Solomon) עַבְדְּךָ֖ (your servant), לֹ֥א (not) קָרָֽא׃ (he has called). 27  אִ֗ם (If) מֵאֵת֙ (by) אֲדֹנִ֣י (my lord) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) נִהְיָ֖ה (has been done) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וְלֹ֤א (and not) הוֹדַ֙עְתָּ֙ (you have told) אֶֽת־ (-) עַבְדֶּיךָ (your servant) מִ֗י (who) יֵשֵׁ֛ב (should sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסֵּ֥א (the throne) אֲדֹנִֽי־ (of my lord) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) אַחֲרָֽיו׃ס (after him)?

David Renews His Oath to Bathsheba

28  וַיַּ֨עַן (And answered) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (King) דָּוִד֙ (David) וַיֹּ֔אמֶר (and said), קִרְאוּ־ (Call) לִ֖י (for me) לְבַת־ (Bath-) שָׁ֑בַע (sheba). וַתָּבֹא֙ (And she came) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king) וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֖ד (and stood) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king).

29  וַיִּשָּׁבַ֥ע (And took an oath) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (and said), חַי־ (As lives) יְהוָ֕ה (YHWH), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) פָּדָ֥ה (has redeemed) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשִׁ֖י (my life) מִכָּל־ (from every) צָרָֽה׃ (distress), 30  כִּ֡י (just) כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ (as) נִשְׁבַּ֨עְתִּי (I swore) לָ֜ךְ (to you) בַּיהוָ֨ה (by YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), כִּֽי־ (surely) שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה (Solomon) בְנֵךְ֙ (your son) יִמְלֹ֣ךְ (shall be king) אַחֲרַ֔י (after me), וְה֛וּא (and he) יֵשֵׁ֥ב (shall sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסְאִ֖י (my throne) תַּחְתָּ֑י (in my place). כִּ֛י (Even) כֵּ֥ן (so) אֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה (I will surely do) הַיּ֥וֹם (day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

31  וַתִּקֹּ֨ד (And bowed) בַּת־ (Bath-) שֶׁ֤בַע (sheba) אַפַּ֙יִם֙ (with her nose) אֶ֔רֶץ (to the ground) וַתִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ (and she bowed low) לַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (to the king), וַתֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), יְחִ֗י (May live) אֲדֹנִ֛י (my lord) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (King) דָּוִ֖ד (David) לְעֹלָֽם׃פ (forever).

Solomon Anointed King
(1 Chronicles 29:21–25)

32  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (And said) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) דָּוִ֗ד (David), קִרְאוּ־ (Call) לִ֞י (for me) לְצָד֤וֹק (Zadok) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest), וּלְנָתָ֣ן (and Nathan) הַנָּבִ֔יא (the prophet), וְלִבְנָיָ֖הוּ (and Benaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֑ע (of Jehoiada). וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (And they came in) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king).

33  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) לָהֶ֗ם (to them), קְח֤וּ (Take) עִמָּכֶם֙ (with you⁺) אֶת־ (-) עַבְדֵ֣י (the servants) אֲדֹנֵיכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ lord), וְהִרְכַּבְתֶּם֙ (and have ride) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה (Solomon) בְנִ֔י (my son) עַל־ (on) הַפִּרְדָּ֖ה (the mule) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) לִ֑י (unto me), וְהוֹרַדְתֶּ֥ם (and take him down) אֹת֖וֹ (-) אֶל־ (to) גִּחֽוֹן׃ (Gihon). 34  וּמָשַׁ֣ח (And let anoint) אֹת֣וֹ (him) שָׁ֠ם (there) צָד֨וֹק (Zadok) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) וְנָתָ֧ן (and Nathan) הַנָּבִ֛יא (the prophet) לְמֶ֖לֶךְ (as king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וּתְקַעְתֶּם֙ (and blow) בַּשּׁוֹפָ֔ר (the shofar) וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם (and say), יְחִ֖י (Long live) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (Solomon)! 35  וַעֲלִיתֶ֣ם (And you⁺ shall come up) אַחֲרָ֗יו (after him), וּבָא֙ (and he shall come) וְיָשַׁ֣ב (and sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסְאִ֔י (my throne), וְה֥וּא (and he) יִמְלֹ֖ךְ (shall be king) תַּחְתָּ֑י (in my place). וְאֹת֤וֹ (And him) צִוִּ֙יתִי֙ (I have appointed) לִֽהְי֣וֹת (to be) נָגִ֔יד (ruler) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) וְעַל־ (and) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (Judah).

36  וַיַּ֨עַן (And answered) בְּנָיָ֧הוּ (Benaiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהֽוֹיָדָ֛ע (of Jehoiada) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (and said), אָמֵ֑ן (Amen)! כֵּ֚ן (Thus) יֹאמַ֣ר (speaks) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֖י (the God) אֲדֹנִ֥י (of my lord) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king). 37  כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (As) הָיָ֤ה (has been) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עִם־ (with) אֲדֹנִ֣י (my lord) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), כֵּ֖ן (even so) יְהִי (may He be) עִם־ (with) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (Solomon) וִֽיגַדֵּל֙ (and make greater) אֶת־ (-) כִּסְא֔וֹ (his throne) מִ֨כִּסֵּ֔א (than the throne) אֲדֹנִ֖י (of my lord) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (King) דָּוִֽד׃ (David).

38  וַיֵּ֣רֶד (And went down) צָד֣וֹק (Zadok) הַ֠כֹּהֵן (the priest), וְנָתָ֨ן (and Nathan) הַנָּבִ֜יא (the prophet), וּבְנָיָ֣הוּ (and Benaiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֗ע (of Jehoiada), וְהַכְּרֵתִי֙ (and the Cherethites), וְהַפְּלֵתִ֔י (and the Pelethites), וַיַּרְכִּ֙בוּ֙ (and they had ride) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon) עַל־ (on) פִּרְדַּ֖ת (the mule) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of King) דָּוִ֑ד (of David) וַיֹּלִ֥כוּ (and took) אֹת֖וֹ (him) עַל־ (to) גִּחֽוֹן׃ (Gihon). 39  וַיִּקַּח֩ (And took) צָד֨וֹק (Zadok) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) אֶת־ (-) קֶ֤רֶן (a horn) הַשֶּׁ֙מֶן֙ (of the oil) מִן־ (from) הָאֹ֔הֶל (the tabernacle), וַיִּמְשַׁ֖ח (and he anointed) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (Solomon). וַֽיִּתְקְעוּ֙ (And they blew) בַּשּׁוֹפָ֔ר (with the shofar), וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ (and said) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֔ם (the people), יְחִ֖י (Long live) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (Solomon).

40  וַיַּעֲל֤וּ (And went up) כָל־ (all) הָעָם֙ (the people) אַֽחֲרָ֔יו (after him), וְהָעָם֙ (and the people) מְחַלְּלִ֣ים (played) בַּחֲלִלִ֔ים (the flutes), וּשְׂמֵחִ֖ים (and rejoiced) שִׂמְחָ֣ה (with joy) גְדוֹלָ֑ה (great), וַתִּבָּקַ֥ע (and was split) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the earth) בְּקוֹלָֽם׃ (by their sound).

Adonijah Learns of Solomon’s Kingship

41  וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And heard it) אֲדֹנִיָּ֗הוּ (Adonijah) וְכָל־ (and all) הַקְּרֻאִים֙ (the guests) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) אִתּ֔וֹ (with him), וְהֵ֖ם (and they) כִּלּ֣וּ (finished) לֶאֱכֹ֑ל (eating). וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע (And heard) יוֹאָב֙ (Joab) אֶת־ (-) ק֣וֹל (the voice) הַשּׁוֹפָ֔ר (of the shofar). וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), מַדּ֥וּעַ (Why) קֽוֹל־ (is the noise) הַקִּרְיָ֖ה (of the city) הוֹמָֽה׃ (roaring)?

42  עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ (While he was still) מְדַבֵּ֔ר (speaking), וְהִנֵּ֧ה (and behold), יוֹנָתָ֛ן (Jonathan) בֶּן־ (son) אֶבְיָתָ֥ר (of Abiathar) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest) בָּ֑א (came in). וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said to him) אֲדֹנִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Adonijah), בֹּ֔א (Come in), כִּ֣י (for) אִ֥ישׁ (are a man) חַ֛יִל (of valor) אַ֖תָּה (you), וְט֥וֹב (and good) תְּבַשֵּֽׂר׃ (bring news).

43  וַיַּ֙עַן֙ (And answered) יוֹנָתָ֔ן (Jonathan) וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and said) לַאֲדֹנִיָּ֑הוּ (to Adonijah), אֲבָ֕ל (Truly) אֲדֹנֵ֥ינוּ (our lord) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־ (King) דָּוִ֖ד (David) הִמְלִ֥יךְ (has made king) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (Solomon). 44  וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (And has sent) אִתּֽוֹ־ (with him) הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ (the king) אֶת־ (-) צָד֨וֹק (Zadok) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest), וְאֶת־ (and) נָתָ֣ן (Nathan) הַנָּבִ֗יא (the prophet), וּבְנָיָ֙הוּ֙ (and Benaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע (of Jehoiada), וְהַכְּרֵתִ֖י (and the Cherethites), וְהַפְּלֵתִ֑י (and the Pelethites), וַיַּרְכִּ֣בוּ (and they had ride) אֹת֔וֹ (him) עַ֖ל (on) פִּרְדַּ֥ת (mule) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king). 45  וַיִּמְשְׁח֣וּ (And have anointed) אֹת֡וֹ (him) צָד֣וֹק (Zadok) הַכֹּהֵ֣ן (the priest) וְנָתָן֩ (and Nathan) הַנָּבִ֨יא (the prophet) לְמֶ֜לֶךְ (king) בְּגִח֗וֹן (at Gihon), וַיַּעֲל֤וּ (and they have gone up) מִשָּׁם֙ (from there) שְׂמֵחִ֔ים (rejoicing), וַתֵּהֹ֖ם (and rings out) הַקִּרְיָ֑ה (the city) ה֥וּא (it) הַקּ֖וֹל (the noise) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) שְׁמַעְתֶּֽם׃ (you⁺ have heard).

46  וְגַם֙ (And) יָשַׁ֣ב (sits) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon) עַ֖ל (on) כִּסֵּ֥א (the throne) הַמְּלוּכָֽה׃ (of the kingdom).

47  וְגַם־ (And also) בָּ֜אוּ (have gone) עַבְדֵ֣י (the servants) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (of the king) לְ֠בָרֵךְ (to bless) אֶת־ (-) אֲדֹנֵ֜ינוּ (our lord) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) דָּוִד֮ (David), לֵאמֹר֒ (saying), יֵיטֵ֨ב (May make better) אֱלֹהֶיךָ (God) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁ֤ם (the name) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (of Solomon) מִשְּׁמֶ֔ךָ (than your name), וִֽיגַדֵּ֥ל (and may He make greater) אֶת־ (-) כִּסְא֖וֹ (his throne) מִכִּסְאֶ֑ךָ (than your throne).

וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ (And bowed low) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) עַל־ (on) הַמִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ (the bed). 48  וְגַם־ (And) כָּ֖כָה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (said) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), בָּר֨וּךְ (Blessed be) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) נָתַ֥ן (has given one) הַיּ֛וֹם (today) יֹשֵׁ֥ב (to sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסְאִ֖י (my throne), וְעֵינַ֥י (and my eyes) רֹאֽוֹת׃ (have seen it).

49  וַיֶּֽחֶרְדוּ֙ (And were afraid) וַיָּקֻ֔מוּ (and arose) כָּל־ (all) הַ֨קְּרֻאִ֔ים (the guests) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who) לַאֲדֹנִיָּ֑הוּ (were with Adonijah), וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ (and went) אִ֥ישׁ (each man) לְדַרְכּֽוֹ׃ (on his way). 50  וַאֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ (And Adonijah) יָרֵ֖א (was afraid) מִפְּנֵ֣י (of) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (Solomon). וַיָּ֣קָם (And he arose) וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ (and went) וַֽיַּחֲזֵ֖ק (and took hold) בְּקַרְנ֥וֹת (of the horns) הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ (of the altar).

51  וַיֻּגַּ֤ד (And it was told) לִשְׁלֹמֹה֙ (to Solomon), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הִנֵּה֙ (Behold), אֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ (Adonijah) יָרֵ֖א (is afraid) אֶת־ (of) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (Solomon), וְ֠הִנֵּה (and behold), אָחַ֞ז (he has taken hold) בְּקַרְנ֤וֹת (of the horns) הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ (of the altar), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), יִשָּֽׁבַֽע־ (Let swear) לִ֤י (to me) כַיּוֹם֙ (today) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon) אִם־ (not) יָמִ֥ית (that he will put to death) אֶת־ (-) עַבְדּ֖וֹ (his servant) בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ (with the sword).

52  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon), אִ֚ם (If) יִהְיֶ֣ה (he is) לְבֶן־ (a son) חַ֔יִל (of strength), לֹֽא־ (not) יִפֹּ֥ל (shall fall) מִשַּׂעֲרָת֖וֹ (one hair of him) אָ֑רְצָה (to the earth), וְאִם־ (but if) רָעָ֥ה (wickedness) תִמָּצֵא־ (is found) ב֖וֹ (in him), וָמֵֽת׃ (and he shall die).

53  וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח (And sent) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (Solomon) וַיֹּרִדֻ֙הוּ֙ (and they brought him down) מֵעַ֣ל (from) הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ (the altar). וַיָּבֹ֕א (And he came) וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ (and fell down) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (before King) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (Solomon). וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ (And said) ל֥וֹ (to him) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon), לֵ֥ךְ (Go) לְבֵיתֶֽךָ׃פ (to your house).
