David Anointed King of All Israel
(1 Chronicles 11:1–3)

1  וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ (And came) כָּל־ (all) שִׁבְטֵ֧י (the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֖ד (David) חֶבְר֑וֹנָה (at Hebron), וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (and they spoke), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הִנְנ֛וּ (Indeed) עַצְמְךָ֥ (your bone) וּֽבְשָׂרְךָ֖ (and your flesh) אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃ (we are). 2  גַּם־ (Also) אֶתְמ֣וֹל (formerly), גַּם־ (even) שִׁלְשׁ֗וֹם (heretofore), בִּהְי֨וֹת (when was) שָׁא֥וּל (Saul) מֶ֙לֶךְ֙ (king) עָלֵ֔ינוּ (over us), אַתָּ֗ה (you) הָיִיתָה (were the one) מוֹצִיא (who led out) וְהַמֵּבִי (and brought in) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel). וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) לְךָ֗ (to you), אַתָּ֨ה (You) תִרְעֶ֤ה (shall shepherd) אֶת־ (-) עַמִּי֙ (My people) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וְאַתָּ֛ה (and you) תִּהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) לְנָגִ֖יד (ruler) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

3  וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ (And came) כָּל־ (all) זִקְנֵ֨י (the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) חֶבְר֔וֹנָה (at Hebron). וַיִּכְרֹ֣ת (And cut) לָהֶם֩ (with them) הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ (King) דָּוִ֥ד (David) בְּרִ֛ית (a covenant) בְּחֶבְר֖וֹן (at Hebron) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַיִּמְשְׁח֧וּ (and they anointed) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֛ד (David) לְמֶ֖לֶךְ (king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (Israel).

4  בֶּן־ (A son) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (of thirty) שָׁנָ֛ה (years) דָּוִ֖ד (David was) בְּמָלְכ֑וֹ (when he began to reign). אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (Forty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) מָלָֽךְ׃ (he reigned). 5  בְּחֶבְרוֹן֙ (In Hebron) מָלַ֣ךְ (he reigned) עַל־ (over) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah) שֶׁ֥בַע (seven) שָׁנִ֖ים (years) וְשִׁשָּׁ֣ה (and six) חֳדָשִׁ֑ים (months), וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֣ם (and in Jerusalem) מָלַ֗ךְ (he reigned) שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים (thirty) וְשָׁלֹשׁ֙ (and three) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) עַ֥ל (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) וִיהוּדָֽה׃ (and Judah).

David Conquers Jerusalem
(1 Chronicles 11:4–9)

6  וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ (And went) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (the king) וַֽאֲנָשָׁיו֙ (and his men) יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (to Jerusalem) אֶל־ (against) הַיְבֻסִ֖י (the Jebusite), יוֹשֵׁ֣ב (the dweller) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and he spoke) לְדָוִ֤ד (to David), לֵאמֹר֙ (saying), לֹא־ (Not) תָב֣וֹא (you shall come in) הֵ֔נָּה (here), כִּ֣י (for) אִם־ (but) הֱסִֽירְךָ֗ (will repel you) הַעִוְרִ֤ים (the blind) וְהַפִּסְחִים֙ (and the lame). לֵאמֹ֔ר (They said), לֹֽא־ (Not) יָב֥וֹא (can come in) דָוִ֖ד (David) הֵֽנָּה׃ (here).

7  וַיִּלְכֹּ֣ד (And took) דָּוִ֔ד (David) אֵ֖ת (-) מְצֻדַ֣ת (the stronghold) צִיּ֑וֹן (of Zion) הִ֖יא (that is), עִ֥יר (the City) דָּוִֽד׃ (of David)) 8  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) דָּוִ֜ד (David) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on day) הַה֗וּא (that), כָּל־ (Whoever) מַכֵּ֤ה (strikes) יְבֻסִי֙ (the Jebusite) וְיִגַּ֣ע (and climbs up) בַּצִּנּ֔וֹר (let him go up), וְאֶת־ (and) הַפִּסְחִים֙ (the lame) וְאֶת־ (and) הַ֣עִוְרִ֔ים (the blind) שָׂנְאוּ (who are hated by) נֶ֣פֶשׁ (the soul) דָּוִ֑ד (of David), עַל־ (upon) כֵּן֙ (thus) יֹֽאמְר֔וּ (they say), עִוֵּ֣ר (The blind) וּפִסֵּ֔חַ (and the lame) לֹ֥א (not) יָב֖וֹא (shall come) אֶל־ (into) הַבָּֽיִת׃ (the house).

9  וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב (And dwelt) דָּוִד֙ (David) בַּמְּצֻדָ֔ה (in the stronghold), וַיִּקְרָא־ (and he called) לָ֖הּ (it) עִ֣יר (the City) דָּוִ֑ד (of David). וַיִּ֤בֶן (And built) דָּוִד֙ (David) סָבִ֔יב (all around) מִן־ (from) הַמִּלּ֖וֹא (the Millo) וָבָֽיְתָה׃ (and inward). 10  וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (And went on) דָּוִ֖ד (David) הָל֣וֹךְ (going on), וְגָד֑וֹל (and becoming great), וַיהוָ֛ה (and YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) צְבָא֖וֹת (of Hosts was) עִמּֽוֹ׃פ (with him).

11  וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח (And sent) חִירָ֨ם (Hiram) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) צֹ֥ר (of Tyre) מַלְאָכִים֮ (messengers) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִד֒ (David), וַעֲצֵ֣י (and trees) אֲרָזִ֔ים (cedar), וְחָרָשֵׁ֣י (and) עֵ֔ץ (carpenters), וְחָֽרָשֵׁ֖י (and artificers) אֶ֣בֶן (of stone) קִ֑יר (for walls), וַיִּבְנֽוּ־ (and they built) בַ֖יִת (a house) לְדָוִֽד׃ (for David).

David’s Family Grows
(1 Chronicles 14:1–7)

12  וַיֵּ֣דַע (And knew) דָּוִ֔ד (David) כִּֽי־ (that) הֱכִינ֧וֹ (had established him) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לְמֶ֖לֶךְ (as king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וְכִי֙ (and that) נִשֵּׂ֣א (He had lifted up) מַמְלַכְתּ֔וֹ (his kingdom) בַּעֲב֖וּר (for the sake) עַמּ֥וֹ (of His people) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (Israel).

13  וַיִּקַּח֩ (And took) דָּוִ֨ד (David) ע֜וֹד (more) פִּֽלַגְשִׁ֤ים (concubines) וְנָשִׁים֙ (and wives) מִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (from Jerusalem) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) בֹּא֣וֹ (he had come) מֵחֶבְר֑וֹן (from Hebron), וַיִּוָּ֥לְדּוּ (and were born) ע֛וֹד (more) לְדָוִ֖ד (to David) בָּנִ֥ים (sons) וּבָנֽוֹת׃ (and daughters). 14  וְאֵ֗לֶּה (And these are) שְׁמ֛וֹת (the names) הַיִּלֹּדִ֥ים (of those who were born) ל֖וֹ (to him) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem): שַׁמּ֣וּעַ (Shammua), וְשׁוֹבָ֔ב (and Shobab), וְנָתָ֖ן (and Nathan), וּשְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (and Solomon), 15  וְיִבְחָ֥ר (and Ibhar), וֶאֱלִישׁ֖וּעַ (and Elishua), וְנֶ֥פֶג (and Nepheg), וְיָפִֽיעַ׃ (and Japhia), 16  וֶאֱלִישָׁמָ֥ע (and Elishama), וְאֶלְיָדָ֖ע (and Eliada), וֶאֱלִיפָֽלֶט׃פ (and Eliphelet).

Two Victories over the Philistines
(1 Chronicles 14:8–17)

17  וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ (And heard) פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים (the Philistines) כִּי־ (that) מָשְׁח֨וּ (they had anointed) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֤ד (David) לְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙ (king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וַיַּעֲל֥וּ (and went up) כָל־ (all) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (the Philistines) לְבַקֵּ֣שׁ (to search for) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֑ד (David). וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And heard) דָּוִ֔ד (David) וַיֵּ֖רֶד (and went down) אֶל־ (to) הַמְּצוּדָֽה׃ (the stronghold).

18  וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (And the Philistines) בָּ֑אוּ (went) וַיִּנָּטְשׁ֖וּ (and spread out) בְּעֵ֥מֶק (in the Valley) רְפָאִֽים׃ (of Rephaim). 19  וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל (And inquired) דָּוִ֤ד (David) בַּֽיהוָה֙ (of YHWH), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הַאֶֽעֱלֶה֙ (Shall I go up) אֶל־ (against) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (the Philistines)? הֲתִתְּנֵ֖ם (Will You give them) בְּיָדִ֑י (into my hand)?

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִד֙ (David), עֲלֵ֔ה (Go up), כִּֽי־ (for) נָתֹ֥ן (giving) אֶתֵּ֛ן (I will give) אֶת־ (-) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (the Philistines) בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃ (into your hand).

20  וַיָּבֹ֨א (And went) דָוִ֥ד (David) בְּבַֽעַל־ (to Baal-) פְּרָצִים֮ (perazim), וַיַּכֵּ֣ם (and defeated them) שָׁ֣ם (there) דָּוִד֒ (David), וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and he said), פָּרַ֨ץ (Has broken through) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) אֹיְבַ֛י (my enemies) לְפָנַ֖י (before me) כְּפֶ֣רֶץ (like a breakthrough) מָ֑יִם (of waters). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֗ן (thus) קָרָ֛א (he called) שֵֽׁם־ (the name) הַמָּק֥וֹם (of the place) הַה֖וּא (that) בַּ֥עַל (Baal-) פְּרָצִֽים׃ (perazim). 21  וַיַּעַזְבוּ־ (And they left) שָׁ֖ם (there) אֶת־ (-) עֲצַבֵּיהֶ֑ם (their images), וַיִּשָּׂאֵ֥ם (and carried them away) דָּוִ֖ד (David) וַאֲנָשָֽׁיו׃פ (and his men).

22  וַיֹּסִ֥פוּ (And added) ע֛וֹד (again) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (the Philistines) לַֽעֲל֑וֹת (to come up) וַיִּנָּֽטְשׁ֖וּ (and spread out) בְּעֵ֥מֶק (in the Valley) רְפָאִֽים׃ (of Rephaim). 23  וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל (And inquired) דָּוִד֙ (David) בַּֽיהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and He said), לֹ֣א (Not) תַעֲלֶ֑ה (you shall go up). הָסֵב֙ (Circle around) אֶל־ (unto) אַ֣חֲרֵיהֶ֔ם (behind them) וּבָ֥אתָ (and come) לָהֶ֖ם (upon them) מִמּ֥וּל (in front) בְּכָאִֽים׃ (of the balsam trees). 24  וִ֠יהִי (And it shall come to pass), בְּשָׁמְעֲךָ (when you hear) אֶת־ (-) ק֧וֹל (the sound) צְעָדָ֛ה (of marching) בְּרָאשֵׁ֥י (in the tops) הַבְּכָאִ֖ים (of the balsam trees), אָ֣ז (then) תֶּחֱרָ֑ץ (you shall advance quickly). כִּ֣י (For) אָ֗ז (then) יָצָ֤א (will go out) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before you) לְהַכּ֖וֹת (to strike) בְּמַחֲנֵ֥ה (the camp) פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (of the Philistines).

25  וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (And did) דָּוִד֙ (David) כֵּ֔ן (so), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוָּ֖הוּ (had commanded him) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַיַּךְ֙ (and he drove back) אֶת־ (-) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (the Philistines) מִגֶּ֖בַע (from Geba) עַד־ (as far as) בֹּאֲךָ֥ (your coming) גָֽזֶר׃פ (to Gazer).
