The Seventh Day
(Exodus 16:22–30; Hebrews 4:1–11)

1 וַיְכֻלּ֛וּ (And were finished) הַשָּׁמַ֥יִם (the heavens) וְהָאָ֖רֶץ (and the earth), וְכָל־ (and all) צְבָאָֽם׃ (their host).

2 וַיְכַ֤ל (And finished) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) בַּיּ֣וֹם (by the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י (seventh) מְלַאכְתּ֖וֹ (His work) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (He had done); וַיִּשְׁבֹּת֙ (and He rested) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י (the seventh) מִכָּל־ (from all) מְלַאכְתּ֖וֹ (His work) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָֽׂה׃ (He had done).

3 וַיְבָ֤רֶךְ (And blessed) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶת־ (-) י֣וֹם (day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י (the seventh), וַיְקַדֵּ֖שׁ (and He sanctified) אֹת֑וֹ (it) כִּ֣י (because) ב֤וֹ (on it) שָׁבַת֙ (He ceased) מִכָּל־ (from all) מְלַאכְתּ֔וֹ (His work) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּרָ֥א (had created) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃פ (for making).

Man and Woman in the Garden

4 אֵ֣לֶּה (These are) תוֹלְד֧וֹת (the generations) הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם (of the heavens) וְהָאָ֖רֶץ (and the earth) בְּהִבָּֽרְאָ֑ם (in their being created), בְּי֗וֹם (in the day when) עֲשׂ֛וֹת (made) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) אֶ֥רֶץ (the earth) וְשָׁמָֽיִם׃ (and the heavens).

5 וְכֹ֣ל׀ (And any) שִׂ֣יחַ (bush) הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה (of the field) טֶ֚רֶם (not yet) יִֽהְיֶ֣ה (had come to be) בָאָ֔רֶץ (on the earth), וְכָל־ (and any) עֵ֥שֶׂב (plant) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (of the field) טֶ֣רֶם (not yet) יִצְמָ֑ח (had sprouted). כִּי֩ (For) לֹ֨א (not) הִמְטִ֜יר (had caused it to rain) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) עַל־ (on) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth), וְאָדָ֣ם (and man) אַ֔יִן (was not there) לַֽעֲבֹ֖ד (to work) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃ (the ground).

6 וְאֵ֖ד (And a mist) יַֽעֲלֶ֣ה (went up) מִן־ (from) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth) וְהִשְׁקָ֖ה (and watered) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (the whole) פְּנֵֽי־ (face) הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃ (of the ground).

7 וַיִּיצֶר֩ (And formed) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאָדָ֗ם (the man) עָפָר֙ (from dust) מִן־ (of) הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the ground), וַיִּפַּ֥ח (and He breathed) בְּאַפָּ֖יו (into his nostrils) נִשְׁמַ֣ת (the breath) חַיִּ֑ים (of life), וַֽיְהִ֥י (and became) הָֽאָדָ֖ם (the man) לְנֶ֥פֶשׁ (a soul) חַיָּֽה׃ (living).

8 וַיִּטַּ֞ע (And planted) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) גַּן־ (a garden) בְעֵ֖דֶן (in Eden) מִקֶּ֑דֶם (in the east); וַיָּ֣שֶׂם (and He put) שָׁ֔ם (there) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאָדָ֖ם (the man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) יָצָֽר׃ (He had formed).

9 וַיַּצְמַ֞ח (And made sprout) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) מִן־ (from) הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the ground) כָּל־ (every) עֵ֛ץ (tree) נֶחְמָ֥ד (that is pleasing) לְמַרְאֶ֖ה (to the sight) וְט֣וֹב (and good) לְמַאֲכָ֑ל (for food), וְעֵ֤ץ (and the tree) הַֽחַיִּים֙ (of life) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הַגָּ֔ן (of the garden), וְעֵ֕ץ (and the tree) הַדַּ֖עַת (of the knowledge) ט֥וֹב (of good) וָרָֽע׃ (and evil).

10 וְנָהָר֙ (And a river) יֹצֵ֣א (went forth) מֵעֵ֔דֶן (from Eden) לְהַשְׁק֖וֹת (to water) אֶת־ (-) הַגָּ֑ן (the garden); וּמִשָּׁם֙ (and from there) יִפָּרֵ֔ד (it was divided) וְהָיָ֖ה (and became) לְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה (four) רָאשִֽׁים׃ (heads).

11 שֵׁ֥ם (The name) הָֽאֶחָ֖ד (of the one) פִּישׁ֑וֹן (is Pishon); ה֣וּא (it is) הַסֹּבֵ֗ב (the one winding through) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (the whole) אֶ֣רֶץ (land) הַֽחֲוִילָ֔ה (of the Havilah), אֲשֶׁר־ (where) שָׁ֖ם (there is) הַזָּהָֽב׃ (the gold);

12 וּֽזֲהַ֛ב (and the gold) הָאָ֥רֶץ (of the land) הַהִ֖וא (that) ט֑וֹב (is good); שָׁ֥ם (are there) הַבְּדֹ֖לַח (the bdellium) וְאֶ֥בֶן (and stone) הַשֹּֽׁהַם׃ (the onyx).

13 וְשֵֽׁם־ (And the name) הַנָּהָ֥ר (of the river) הַשֵּׁנִ֖י (second) גִּיח֑וֹן (is Gihon); ה֣וּא (it is) הַסּוֹבֵ֔ב (the one winding through) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (the whole) אֶ֥רֶץ (land) כּֽוּשׁ׃ (of Cush).

14 וְשֵׁ֨ם (And the name) הַנָּהָ֤ר (of the river) הַשְּׁלִישִׁי֙ (third) חִדֶּ֔קֶל (is Hiddekel); ה֥וּא (it is) הַֽהֹלֵ֖ךְ (the one going along) קִדְמַ֣ת (the east side) אַשּׁ֑וּר (of Assyria). וְהַנָּהָ֥ר (And the river) הָֽרְבִיעִ֖י (fourth) ה֥וּא (it is) פְרָֽת׃ (the Euphrates).

15 וַיִּקַּ֛ח (And took) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאָדָ֑ם (the man) וַיַּנִּחֵ֣הוּ (and He caused him to rest) בְגַן־ (in the garden) עֵ֔דֶן (of Eden) לְעָבְדָ֖הּ (to work it) וּלְשָׁמְרָֽהּ׃ (and to keep it).

16 וַיְצַו֙ (And placed a command) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) עַל־ (upon) הָֽאָדָ֖ם (the man), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), מִכֹּ֥ל (From every) עֵֽץ־ (tree) הַגָּ֖ן (of the garden) אָכֹ֥ל (eating) תֹּאכֵֽל׃ (you shall eat),

17 וּמֵעֵ֗ץ (and from the tree) הַדַּ֙עַת֙ (of the knowledge) ט֣וֹב (of good) וָרָ֔ע (and evil) לֹ֥א (not) תֹאכַ֖ל (you shall eat) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (from it); כִּ֗י (for) בְּי֛וֹם (in the day) אֲכָלְךָ֥ (of your eating) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (from it), מ֥וֹת (dying) תָּמֽוּת׃ (you shall die).

18 וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), לֹא־ (It is not) ט֛וֹב (good) הֱי֥וֹת (to be) הָֽאָדָ֖ם (for the man) לְבַדּ֑וֹ (alone); אֶֽעֱשֶׂהּ־ (I will make) לּ֥וֹ (for him) עֵ֖זֶר (a helper) כְּנֶגְדּֽוֹ׃ (as his counterpart).

19 וַיִּצֶר֩ (And formed) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) מִן־ (from) הָֽאֲדָמָ֗ה (the ground) כָּל־ (every) חַיַּ֤ת (beast) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (of the field), וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (every) ע֣וֹף (bird) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens); וַיָּבֵא֙ (and He brought them) אֶל־ (to) הָ֣אָדָ֔ם (the man) לִרְא֖וֹת (to see) מַה־ (what) יִּקְרָא־ (he would call) ל֑וֹ (to it). וְכֹל֩ (And) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whatever name) יִקְרָא־ (called) ל֧וֹ (to it) הָֽאָדָ֛ם (the man) נֶ֥פֶשׁ (for each soul) חַיָּ֖ה (living), ה֥וּא (that was) שְׁמֽוֹ׃ (its name).

20 וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) הָֽאָדָ֜ם (the man) שֵׁמ֗וֹת (names) לְכָל־ (to all) הַבְּהֵמָה֙ (the livestock), וּלְע֣וֹף (and to the bird) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens), וּלְכֹ֖ל (and to every) חַיַּ֣ת (beast) הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה (of the field); וּלְאָדָ֕ם (and for the man) לֹֽא־ (not) מָצָ֥א (was found) עֵ֖זֶר (a helper) כְּנֶגְדּֽוֹ׃ (as his counterpart).

21 וַיַּפֵּל֩ (And caused to fall) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֧ים׀ (God) תַּרְדֵּמָ֛ה (a deep sleep) עַל־ (upon) הָאָדָ֖ם (the man); וַיִּישָׁ֑ן (and as he slept), וַיִּקַּ֗ח (and He took) אַחַת֙ (one) מִצַּלְעֹתָ֔יו (from his sides) וַיִּסְגֹּ֥ר (and He closed up) בָּשָׂ֖ר (the flesh) תַּחְתֶּֽנָּה׃ (in its place).

22 וַיִּבֶן֩ (And built) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהִ֧ים׀ (God) אֶֽת־ (-) הַצֵּלָ֛ע (the side), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) לָקַ֥ח (He had taken) מִן־ (from) הָֽאָדָ֖ם (the man) לְאִשָּׁ֑ה (into a woman), וַיְבִאֶ֖הָ (and He brought her) אֶל־ (to) הָֽאָדָֽם׃ (the man).

23 וַיֹּאמֶר֮ (And said) הָֽאָדָם֒ (the man), זֹ֣את (This is) הַפַּ֗עַם (at last) עֶ֚צֶם (bone) מֵֽעֲצָמַ֔י (from my bones) וּבָשָׂ֖ר (and flesh) מִבְּשָׂרִ֑י (from my flesh); לְזֹאת֙ (for this) יִקָּרֵ֣א (shall be called) אִשָּׁ֔ה (Woman), כִּ֥י (because) מֵאִ֖ישׁ (out of Man) לֻֽקֳחָה־ (was taken) זֹּֽאת׃ (this).

24 עַל־ (Upon) כֵּן֙ (thus) יַֽעֲזָב־ (shall leave) אִ֔ישׁ (a man) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֖יו (his father) וְאֶת־ (and) אִמּ֑וֹ (his mother) וְדָבַ֣ק (and shall cleave) בְּאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ (to his wife), וְהָי֖וּ (and they shall become) לְבָשָׂ֥ר (flesh) אֶחָֽד׃ (one).

25 וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ (And were) שְׁנֵיהֶם֙ (the two of them) עֲרוּמִּ֔ים (naked), הָֽאָדָ֖ם (the man) וְאִשְׁתּ֑וֹ (and his wife), וְלֹ֖א (and not) יִתְבֹּשָֽׁשׁוּ׃ (were they ashamed).
