Zophar Rebukes Job

1  וַ֭יַּעַן (And answered) צֹפַ֥ר (Zophar) הַֽנַּעֲמָתִ֗י (the Naamathite), וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ (and said),

2  הֲרֹ֣ב (Shall a multitude) דְּ֭בָרִים (of words) לֹ֣א (not) יֵעָנֶ֑ה (be answered)?

וְאִם־ (And should) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) שְׂפָתַ֣יִם (of lips) יִצְדָּֽק׃ (be justified)?

3  בַּ֭דֶּיךָ (If your idle boasts) מְתִ֣ים (men) יַחֲרִ֑ישׁו (to be silent)?

וַ֝תִּלְעַ֗ג (And will you mock), וְאֵ֣ין (and no one) מַכְלִֽם׃ (is ashamed)?

4  וַ֭תֹּאמֶר (And for you have said), זַ֣ךְ (Pure) לִקְחִ֑י (is my doctrine),

וּ֝בַ֗ר (and clean) הָיִ֥יתִי (I am) בְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ (in Your eyes).

5  וְֽאוּלָ֗ם (But) מִֽי־ (O who) יִתֵּ֣ן (will give) אֱל֣וֹהַּ (God) דַּבֵּ֑ר (to speak),

וְיִפְתַּ֖ח (and open) שְׂפָתָ֣יו (His lips) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (against you),

6  וְיַגֶּד־ (and declare) לְךָ֨׀ (to you) תַּֽעֲלֻמ֣וֹת (the secrets) חָכְמָה֮ (of wisdom),

כִּֽי־ (for there are) כִפְלַ֪יִם (two sides) לְֽת֫וּשִׁיָּ֥ה (to wisdom).

וְדַ֡ע (And know) כִּֽי־ (that) יַשֶּׁ֥ה (forgets) לְךָ֥ (for you)

אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַ (God) מֵעֲוֺנֶֽךָ׃ (some iniquity).

7  הַחֵ֣קֶר (The searching) אֱל֣וֹהַ (of God) תִּמְצָ֑א (Can you find out)?

אִ֤ם (Or) עַד־ (unto) תַּכְלִ֖ית (the limit) שַׁדַּ֣י (of Shaddai) תִּמְצָֽא׃ (can you find out)?

8  גָּבְהֵ֣י (The heights) שָׁ֭מַיִם (of the heavens)— מַה־ (what) תִּפְעָ֑ל (can you do)?

עֲמֻקָּ֥ה (They are deeper) מִ֝שְּׁא֗וֹל (than Sheol)— מַה־ (what) תֵּדָֽע׃ (can you know)?

9  אֲרֻכָּ֣ה (Longer) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (than the earth) מִדָּ֑הּ (is its measure),

וּ֝רְחָבָ֗ה (and wider) מִנִּי־ (than) יָֽם׃ (the sea).

10  אִם־ (If) יַחֲלֹ֥ף (He passes by) וְיַסְגִּ֑יר (and imprisons) וְ֝יַקְהִ֗יל (and assembles),

וּמִ֣י (then who) יְשִׁיבֶֽנּוּ׃ (can turn Him back).

11  כִּי־ (For) ה֭וּא (He) יָדַ֣ע (knows) מְתֵי־ (the men) שָׁ֑וְא (of vanity),

וַיַּרְא־ (and He sees) אָ֝֗וֶן (iniquity)— וְלֹ֣א (and will not) יִתְבּוֹנָֽן׃ (He discern it)?

12  וְאִ֣ישׁ (And for a man) נָ֭בוּב (who is hollow) יִלָּבֵ֑ב (will become wise)

וְעַ֥יִר (when the colt) פֶּ֝֗רֶא (of a wild donkey) אָדָ֥ם (as a man) יִוָּלֵֽד׃ (is born)!

13  אִם־ (If) אַ֭תָּ֗ה (you) הֲכִינ֣וֹתָ (would prepare) לִבֶּ֑ךָ (your heart),

וּפָרַשְׂתָּ֖ (and stretch out) אֵלָ֣יו (to Him) כַּפֶּֽךָ׃ (your hands),

14  אִם־ (if) אָ֣וֶן (iniquity) בְּ֭יָדְךָ (is in your hand) הַרְחִיקֵ֑הוּ (you would put far away),

וְאַל־ (and not) תַּשְׁכֵּ֖ן (shall let dwell) בְּאֹהָלֶ֣יךָ (in your tents) עַוְלָֽה׃ (injustice),

15  כִּי־ (surely) אָ֤ז׀ (then) תִּשָּׂ֣א (you could lift up) פָנֶ֣יךָ (your face) מִמּ֑וּם (without blemish),

וְהָיִ֥יתָ (and you could be) מֻ֝צָ֗ק (established) וְלֹ֣א (and not) תִירָֽא׃ (should you fear).

16  כִּי־ (For) אַ֭תָּה (you) עָמָ֣ל (your toil) תִּשְׁכָּ֑ח (would forget),

כְּמַ֖יִם (as waters) עָבְר֣וּ (pass by) תִזְכֹּֽר׃ (and remember it).

17  וּֽ֭מִצָּהֳרַיִם (And more than noon) יָק֣וּם (will arise) חָ֑לֶד (life);

תָּ֝עֻ֗פָה (darkness) כַּבֹּ֥קֶר (like the morning) תִּהְיֶֽה׃ (will become).

18  וּֽ֭בָטַחְתָּ (And you will be secure) כִּי־ (because) יֵ֣שׁ (there is) תִּקְוָ֑ה (hope),

וְ֝חָפַרְתָּ֗ (and you will search) לָבֶ֥טַח (and in safety) תִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ (will lie down).

19  וְֽ֭רָבַצְתָּ (And You will lie down) וְאֵ֣ין (and there is no one) מַחֲרִ֑יד (making you tremble),

וְחִלּ֖וּ (and will seek favor) פָנֶ֣יךָ (from your face) רַבִּֽים׃ (many).

20  וְעֵינֵ֥י (And the eyes) רְשָׁעִ֗ים (of the wicked) תִּ֫כְלֶ֥ינָה (will fail),

וּ֭מָנוֹס (and escape) אָבַ֣ד (will perish) מִנְהֶ֑ם (from them),

וְ֝תִקְוָתָ֗ם (and their hope) מַֽפַּח־ (be a puff) נָֽפֶשׁ׃פ (of the soul).
