Deliver Me from My Enemies
(1 Samuel 19:1–24)
לַמְנַצֵּ֣חַ (For the one directing): אַל־ (To Do not) תַּשְׁחֵת֮ (Destroy). לְדָוִ֪ד (Of David) מִ֫כְתָּ֥ם (a Miktam), בִּשְׁלֹ֥חַ (at the sending of men) שָׁא֑וּל (by Saul), וַֽיִּשְׁמְר֥וּ (when they watched) אֶת־ (-) הַ֝בַּ֗יִת (the house) לַהֲמִיתֽוֹ׃ (in order to kill him).
1הַצִּילֵ֖נִי (Deliver me) מֵאֹיְבַ֥י׀ (from my enemies), אֱלֹהָ֑י (O my God);
מִּמִתְקוֹמְמַ֥י (from those who rise against me) תְּשַׂגְּבֵֽנִי׃ (set me on a place up high).
2 הַ֭צִּילֵנִי (Deliver me) מִפֹּ֣עֲלֵי (from the workers) אָ֑וֶן (of iniquity),
וּֽמֵאַנְשֵׁ֥י (and from men) דָ֝מִ֗ים (of blood) הוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃ (save me).
3 כִּ֤י (For) הִנֵּ֪ה (behold), אָֽרְב֡וּ (they lie in wait) לְנַפְשִׁ֗י (for my life).
יָג֣וּרוּ (They gather) עָלַ֣י (against me) עַזִ֑ים (the mighty ones),
לֹא־ (not) פִשְׁעִ֖י (for my transgression) וְלֹא־ (and not) חַטָּאתִ֣י (for my sin), יְהוָֽה׃ (O YHWH).
4 בְּֽלִי־ (Without any) עָ֭וֺן (my fault)
יְרוּצ֣וּן (they run) וְיִכּוֹנָ֑נוּ (and prepare themselves).
ע֖וּרָה (Awake) לִקְרָאתִ֣י (to help me), וּרְאֵה׃ (and see).
5 וְאַתָּ֤ה (And You), יְהוָֽה־ (O YHWH), אֱלֹהִ֥ים׀ (God) צְבָא֡וֹת (of Hosts), אֱלֹ֘הֵ֤י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel),
הָקִ֗יצָה (may You awaken) לִפְקֹ֥ד (to attend to) כָּֽל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִ֑ם (the nations);
אַל־ (not) תָּחֹ֨ן (be merciful) כָּל־ (to any) בֹּ֖גְדֵי (of those acting treacherously) אָ֣וֶן (with wickedness).
סֶֽלָה׃ (Selah)
6 יָשׁ֣וּבוּ (they return) לָ֭עֶרֶב (at the evening), יֶהֱמ֥וּ (they growl) כַכָּ֗לֶב (like a dog),
וִיס֥וֹבְבוּ (and go all around) עִֽיר׃ (the city).
7 הִנֵּ֤ה׀ (Behold), יַבִּ֘יע֤וּן (they belch out) בְּפִיהֶ֗ם (with their mouths)—
חֲ֭רָבוֹת (swords) בְּשִׂפְתוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם (are in their lips):
כִּי־ (For) מִ֥י (who) שֹׁמֵֽעַ׃ (hears)?
8 וְאַתָּ֣ה (And You), יְ֭הוָה (O YHWH), תִּשְׂחַק־ (laugh) לָ֑מוֹ (at them);
תִּ֝לְעַ֗ג (You scoff) לְכָל־ (at all) גּוֹיִֽם׃ (the nations).
9 עֻ֭זּוֹ (O my strength), אֵלֶ֣יךָ (for You) אֶשְׁמֹ֑רָה (I will keep watch),
כִּֽי־ (for) אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים (God is) מִשְׂגַּבִּֽי׃ (my secure height).
10 אֱלֹהֵ֣י (The God) חַסְדּוֹ (of loving devotion) יְקַדְּמֵ֑נִי (will meet me);
אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים (God) יַרְאֵ֥נִי (will let me look) בְשֹׁרְרָֽי׃ (on my enemies).
11 אַל־ (Not) תַּהַרְגֵ֤ם׀ (shall You kill them),
פֶּֽן־ (lest) יִשְׁכְּח֬וּ (forget) עַמִּ֗י (my people).
הֲנִיעֵ֣מוֹ (Send them staggering) בְ֭חֵילְךָ (by Your strength),
וְהוֹרִידֵ֑מוֹ (and bring them down),
מָֽגִנֵּ֣נוּ (our shield), אֲדֹנָֽי׃ (O Lord).
12 חַטַּאת־ (The sin) פִּ֗ימוֹ (of their mouth)
דְּֽבַר־ (is a word) שְׂפָ֫תֵ֥ימוֹ (of their lips),
וְיִלָּכְד֥וּ (and let them be captured) בִגְאוֹנָ֑ם (in their pride),
וּמֵאָלָ֖ה (and in the cursing) וּמִכַּ֣חַשׁ (and lies) יְסַפֵּֽרוּ׃ (they recount).
13 כַּלֵּ֥ה (Consume them) בְחֵמָה֮ (in fury),
כַּלֵּ֪ה (consume them), וְֽאֵ֫ינֵ֥מוֹ (and they are no more);
וְֽיֵדְע֗וּ (and let them know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֱ֭לֹהִים (God)
מֹשֵׁ֣ל (is ruling) בְּיַעֲקֹ֑ב (in Jacob) לְאַפְסֵ֖י (to the ends) הָאָ֣רֶץ (of the earth).
סֶֽלָה׃ (Selah)
14 וְיָשׁ֣וּבוּ (and they return) לָ֭עֶרֶב (in the evening);
יֶהֱמ֥וּ (they growl) כַכָּ֗לֶב (like a dog),
וִיס֥וֹבְבוּ (and go round about) עִֽיר׃ (the city).
15 הֵ֭מָּה (They) יְנוּעוּן (wander up and down) לֶאֱכֹ֑ל (for food);
אִם־ (if) לֹ֥א (not) יִ֝שְׂבְּע֗וּ (they are satisfied) וַיָּלִֽינוּ׃ (then they grumble).
16 וַאֲנִ֤י׀ (And I) אָשִׁ֣יר (will sing of) עֻזֶּךָ֮ (Your power),
וַאֲרַנֵּ֥ן (and I will sing out) לַבֹּ֗קֶר (in the morning) חַ֫סְדֶּ֥ךָ (Your loving devotion).
כִּֽי־ (For) הָיִ֣יתָ (You have been) מִשְׂגָּ֣ב (a high place) לִ֑י (for me)
וּ֝מָנ֗וֹס (and a refuge) בְּי֣וֹם (in the day) צַר־ (of distress) לִֽי׃ (for me).
17 עֻ֭זִּי (O My strength), אֵלֶ֣יךָ (to You) אֲזַמֵּ֑רָה (I will sing praises),
כִּֽי־ (for) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (God is) מִ֝שְׂגַּבִּ֗י (my secure height),
אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) חַסְדִּֽי׃ (of loving devotion to me).
