| 1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. | 1But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. |

| 8Then they remembered His words. | 8Then they remembered that he had said this. |

| 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. And after bending down and seeing only the linen cloths, he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. | 12However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. | 13That same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. | 13That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. |
| 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. | 14As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. |
| 15And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them. | 15As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. |
| 16But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. | 16But God kept them from recognizing him. |
| 17He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stood still, with sadness on their faces. | 17He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. |
| 18One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him, “Are You the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?” | 18Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” |
| 19“What things?” He asked. “The events involving Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “This man was a prophet, powerful in speech and action before God and all the people. | 19 “What things?” Jesus asked. “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. |
| 20Our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death, and they crucified Him. | 20But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. |
| 21But we were hoping He was the One who would redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is the third day since these things took place. | 21We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago. |
| 22Furthermore, some of our women astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, | 22“Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report. |
| 23but they did not find His body. They came and told us they had seen a vision of angels, who said that Jesus was alive. | 23They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive! |
| 24Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had described. But Him they did not see.” | 24Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.” |
| 25Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones, how slow are your hearts to believe all that the prophets have spoken! | 25Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. |
| 26Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then to enter His glory?” | 26 Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” |
| 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself. | 27Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. |
| 28As they approached the village where they were headed, He seemed to be going farther. | 28By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, |
| 29But they pleaded with Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them. | 29but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them. |
| 30While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them. | 30As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. |
| 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight. | 31Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! |
| 32They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” | 32They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” |
| 33And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, gathered together | 33And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with them, |
| 34and saying, “The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon!” | 34who said, “The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter. ” Jesus Appears to the Disciples |
| 35Then the two told what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread. | 35Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread. |
| 36While they were describing these events, Jesus Himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” | 36And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. |
| 37But they were startled and frightened, thinking they had seen a spirit. | 37But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost! |
| 38“Why are you troubled,” Jesus asked, “and why do doubts arise in your hearts? | 38 “Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt? |
| 39Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see—for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” | 39 Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.” |
| 40And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet. | 40As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet. |
| 41While they were still in disbelief because of their joy and amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” | 41Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” |

| 44Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.” | 44Then he said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” |

| 46And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, | 46And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. |
| 47and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. | 47 It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ |
| 48You are witnesses of these things. | 48 You are witnesses of all these things. |
| 49And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” | 49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” The Ascension |
| 50When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them. | 50Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them. |
| 51While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven. | 51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven. |
| 52And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, | 52So they worshiped him and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. |
