1Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

12Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, amazed at what had happened.

13And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

13Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

14And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

15And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

17And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

17Then he asked them, “What is this dispute that you’re having with each other as you are walking? ” And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.

18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

18The one named Cleopas answered him, “Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that happened there in these days? ”

19And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

19“What things? ” he asked them. So they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,

20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

20and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him.

21But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

21But we were hoping that he was the one who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day since these things happened.

22Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

22Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb,

23And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

24And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

25Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

25He said to them, “How foolish and slow you are to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

26Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

26Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory? ”

27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

27Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.

28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

28They came near the village where they were going, and he gave the impression that he was going farther.

29But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

29But they urged him, “Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

30It was as he reclined at the table with them that he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.

31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight.

32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

32They said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us? ”

33And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

33That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and those with them gathered together,

34Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

34who said, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon! ”

35And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

35Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

36And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

36As they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace to you! ”

37But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

37But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.

38And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

38“Why are you troubled? ” he asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts?

39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

39Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”

40And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

41And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?

41But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat? ”

42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.

43And he took it, and did eat before them.

44And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

44He told them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you ​--​that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.

46And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

46He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,

47And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

47and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48And ye are witnesses of these things.

48You are witnesses of these things.

49And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

49And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”

50And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

50Then he led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.

51And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

51And while he was blessing them, he left them and was carried up into heaven.

52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

52After worshiping him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

53And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
