1When He had completed all His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.

1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum.

2And a centurion's slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die.

2At that time the highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death.

3When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the life of his slave.

3When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave.

4When they came to Jesus, they earnestly implored Him, saying, "He is worthy for You to grant this to him;

4So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said,

5for he loves our nation and it was he who built us our synagogue."

5“for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.”

6Now Jesus started on His way with them; and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, "Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof;

6So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor.

7for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

7I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.

8"For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another, 'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it."

8I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”

9Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, "I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith."

9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”

10When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

10And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed. Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son

11Soon afterwards He went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.

11Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.

12Now as He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her.

12A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.

13When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, "Do not weep."

13When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.

14And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise!"

14Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.”

15The dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother.

15Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.

16Fear gripped them all, and they began glorifying God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and, "God has visited His people!"

16Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”

17This report concerning Him went out all over Judea and in all the surrounding district.

17And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside. Jesus and John the Baptist

18The disciples of John reported to him about all these things.

18The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,

19Summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?"

19and he sent them to the Lord to ask him, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”

20When the men came to Him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, 'Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?'"

20John’s two disciples found Jesus and said to him, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?’”

21At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind.

21At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.

22And He answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.

22Then he told John’s disciples, “Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard—the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”

23"Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me."

23 And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me. ”

24When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

24After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?

25"But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces!

25 Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces.

26"But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one who is more than a prophet.

26 Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.

27"This is the one about whom it is written, 'BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.'

27 John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’

28"I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

28 I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!”

29When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God's justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John.

29When they heard this, all the people—even the tax collectors—agreed that God’s way was right, for they had been baptized by John.

30But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God's purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.

30But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism.

31"To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?

31 “To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them?

32"They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and they say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.'

32 They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’

33"For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon!'

33 For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’

34"The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

34 The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’

35"Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children."

35 But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it. ” Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman

36Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.

36One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat.

37And there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume,

37When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.

38and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.

38Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.

39Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner."

39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”

40And Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he replied, "Say it, Teacher."

40Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.” “Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.

41"A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

41Then Jesus told him this story: “A man loaned money to two people—500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other.

42"When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?"

42 But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”

43Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him, "You have judged correctly."

43Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.” “That’s right,” Jesus said.

44Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

44Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

45"You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet.

45 You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet.

46"You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume.

46 You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.

47"For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little."

47 “I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”

48Then He said to her, "Your sins have been forgiven."

48Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”

49Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves, "Who is this man who even forgives sins?"

49The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”

50And He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

50And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
