Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover.1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,
And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.2and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a way to put Jesus to death; for they feared the people.
Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.3Then Satan entered Judas Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve.
So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them.4And Judas went to discuss with the chief priests and temple officers how he might betray Jesus to them.
And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.5They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.6Judas consented, and began to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus to them in the absence of a crowd.
Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed.7Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed.
And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare for us to eat the Passover.”
So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”9“Where do You want us to prepare it?” they asked.
And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters.10He answered, “When you enter the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters,
Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’11and say to the owner of that house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’
Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”12And he will show you a large upper room, already furnished. Make preparations there.”
So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.13So they went and found it just as Jesus had told them. And they prepared the Passover.
When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him.14When the hour had come, Jesus reclined at the table with His apostles.
Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;15And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before My suffering.
for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”16For I tell you that I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves;17After taking the cup, He gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves.
for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”18For I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.”
And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”19And He took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.20In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.
But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table.21Look! The hand of My betrayer is with Mine on the table.
And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”22Indeed, the Son of Man will go as it has been determined, but woe to that man who betrays Him.”
Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.23Then they began to question among themselves which of them was going to do this.
Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest.24A dispute also arose among the disciples as to which of them would be considered the greatest.
And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’25So Jesus declared, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them call themselves benefactors.
But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.26But you shall not be like them. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves.
For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.27For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines? But I am among you as one who serves.
“But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials.28You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials.
And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me,29And I bestow on you a kingdom, just as My Father has bestowed one on Me,
that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”30so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.31Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat.
But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”33“Lord,” said Peter, “I am ready to go with You even to prison and to death.”
Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”34But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”
And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?” So they said, “Nothing.”35Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out without purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered.
Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.36“Now, however,” He told them, “the one with a purse should take it, and likewise a bag; and the one without a sword should sell his cloak and buy one.
For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”37For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about Me is reaching its fulfillment.”
So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”38So they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” “That is enough,” He answered.
Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him.
When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”40When He came to the place, He told them, “Pray that you will not enter into temptation.”
And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed,41And He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, where He knelt down and prayed,
saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”42“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.43Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him.
And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.44And in His anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.
When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow.45When Jesus rose from prayer and returned to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.
Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”46“Why are you sleeping?” He asked. “Get up and pray so that you will not enter into temptation.”
And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.47While He was still speaking, a crowd arrived, led by the man called Judas, one of the Twelve. He approached Jesus to kiss Him.
But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”48But Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”49Those around Jesus saw what was about to happen and said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”
And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.51But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And He touched the man’s ear and healed him.
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple officers, and elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against an outlaw?
When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on Me. But this hour belongs to you and to the power of darkness.”
Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed at a distance.54Then they seized Jesus, led Him away, and took Him into the house of the high priest. And Peter followed at a distance.
Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.55When those present had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.
And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”56A servant girl saw him seated in the firelight and looked intently at him. “This man also was with Him,” she said.
But he denied Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”57But Peter denied it. “Woman, I do not know Him,” he said.
And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”58A short time later, someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.”
Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean.”59About an hour later, another man insisted, “Certainly this man was with Him, for he too is a Galilean.”
But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.60“Man, I do not know what you are talking about,” Peter replied. While he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”61And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word that the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”
So Peter went out and wept bitterly.62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.63The men who were holding Jesus began to mock Him and beat Him.
And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?”64They blindfolded Him and kept demanding, “Prophesy! Who hit You?”
And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.65And they said many other blasphemous things against Him.
As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying,66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, met together. They led Jesus into their Sanhedrin and said,
“If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe.67“If You are the Christ, tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe.
And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go.68And if I ask you a question, you will not answer.
Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.”70So they all asked, “Are You then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.”
And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”71“Why do we need any more testimony?” they declared. “We have heard it for ourselves from His own lips.”
