1 Do not rejoice, O Israel, with exultation like the nations, for you have played the harlot against your God; you have made love for hire on every threshing floor. Rejoice not, O Israel! Exult not like the peoples; for you have played the whore, forsaking your God. You have loved a prostitute’s wages on all threshing floors. Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as <i>other</i> people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved a reward upon every cornfloor. Do not rejoice, Israel, with jubilation like the nations! For you have been unfaithful, abandoning your God. You have loved the earnings <i>of unfaithfulness</i> on every threshing floor. Do not rejoice, Israel; do not be jubilant like the other nations. For you have been unfaithful to your God; you love the wages of a prostitute at every threshing floor.
2 The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will fail them. Threshing floor and wine vat shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail them. The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her. Threshing floor and wine press will not feed them, And the new wine will fail them. Threshing floors and winepresses will not feed the people; the new wine will fail them.
3 They will not remain in the land of the LORD; Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria. They shall not remain in the land of the LORD, but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean food in Assyria. They shall not dwell in the LORD'S land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean <i>things</i> in Assyria. 4 They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not please Him, but will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat will be defiled. For their bread will be for themselves; it will not enter the house of the LORD. They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the LORD, and their sacrifices shall not please him. It shall be like mourners’ bread to them; all who eat of it shall be defiled; for their bread shall be for their hunger only; it shall not come to the house of the LORD. They shall not offer wine <i>offerings</i> to the LORD, neither shall they be pleasing unto him: their sacrifices <i>shall be</i> unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be polluted: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD. They will not pour out drink offerings of wine to the LORD, Nor will their sacrifices please Him. <i>Their bread will be</i> to them like mourners’ bread; All who eat it will be defiled, Because their bread will be for themselves <i>alone;</i> It will not enter the house of the LORD. They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, nor will their sacrifices please him. Such sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat them will be unclean. This food will be for themselves; it will not come into the temple of the LORD.
5 What will you do on the appointed day, on the day of the LORD’s feast? What will you do on the day of the appointed festival, and on the day of the feast of the LORD? What will ye do in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD? What will you do on the day of the appointed festival And on the day of the feast of the LORD? What will you do on the day of your appointed festivals, on the feast days of the LORD?
6 For even if they flee destruction, Egypt will gather them and Memphis will bury them. Their precious silver will be taken over by thistles, and thorns will overrun their tents. For behold, they are going away from destruction; but Egypt shall gather them; Memphis shall bury them. Nettles shall possess their precious things of silver; thorns shall be in their tents. For, lo, they are gone because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them: the pleasant <i>places</i> for their silver, nettles shall possess them: thorns <i>shall be</i> in their tabernacles. For behold, they will be gone because of destruction; Egypt will gather them together, Memphis will bury them. Weeds will take possession of their treasures of silver; Thorns <i>will be</i> in their tents. Even if they escape from destruction, Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them. Their treasures of silver will be taken over by briers, and thorns will overrun their tents.
7 The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution have arrived— let Israel know it. The prophet is called a fool, and the inspired man insane, because of the greatness of your iniquity and hostility. The days of punishment have come; the days of recompense have come; Israel shall know it. The prophet is a fool; the man of the spirit is mad, because of your great iniquity and great hatred. The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know <i>it</i>: the prophet <i>is</i> a fool, the spiritual man <i>is</i> mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred. The days of punishment have come, The days of retribution have come; Let Israel know <i>this!</i> The prophet is a fool, The inspired person is insane, Because of the grossness of your wrongdoing, And <i>because your</i> hostility is <i>so</i> great. The days of punishment are coming, the days of reckoning are at hand. Let Israel know this. Because your sins are so many and your hostility so great, the prophet is considered a fool, the inspired person a maniac.
8 The prophet is Ephraim’s watchman, along with my God, yet the snare of the fowler lies on all his paths. Hostility is in the house of his God! The prophet is the watchman of Ephraim with my God; yet a fowler’s snare is on all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God. The watchman of Ephraim <i>was</i> with my God: <i>but</i> the prophet <i>is</i> a snare of a fowler in all his ways, <i>and</i> hatred in the house of his God. Ephraim <i>was</i> a watchman with my God, a prophet; <i>Yet</i> the snare of a bird catcher is in all his ways, <i>And</i> there is <i>only</i> hostility in the house of his God. The prophet, along with my God, is the watchman over Ephraim, yet snares await him on all his paths, and hostility in the house of his God.
9 They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah; He will remember their guilt; He will punish their sins. But they went to Baal-peor, and consecrated themselves to Shame; so they became as detestable as the thing they loved. Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree in its first season, I saw your fathers. But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to the thing of shame, and became detestable like the thing they loved. I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: <i>but</i> they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto <i>that</i> shame; and <i>their</i> abominations were according as they loved. But when they came to Baal Peor, they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol and became as vile as the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird, with no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception. Ephraim’s glory shall fly away like a bird— no birth, no pregnancy, no conception! <i>As for</i> Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth, and from the womb, and from the conception. 12 Even if they raise their children, I will bereave them of each one. Yes, woe be to them when I turn away from them! Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them till none is left. Woe to them when I depart from them! Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, <i>that there shall</i> not <i>be</i> a man <i>left</i>: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them! Though they bring up their children, Yet I will bereave them of their children until not a person is left. Yes, woe to them indeed when I depart from them! Even if they rear children, I will bereave them of every one. Woe to them when I turn away from them!
13 I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a meadow. But Ephraim will bring out his children for slaughter. Ephraim, as I have seen, was like a young palm planted in a meadow; but Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter. Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, <i>is</i> planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer. Ephraim, as I have seen, Is planted in a pasture like Tyre; But Ephraim is going to bring out his children for slaughter. I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a pleasant place. But Ephraim will bring out their children to the slayer.”
14 Give them, O LORD— what will You give? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that dry up! Give them, O LORD— what will you give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. Give to them, LORD—what will You give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dried-up breasts. Give them, LORD— what will you give them? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that are dry.
15 All their evil appears at Gilgal, for there I hated them. I will drive them from My house for the wickedness of their deeds. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious. Every evil of theirs is in Gilgal; there I began to hate them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no more; all their princes are rebels. All their wickedness <i>is</i> in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes <i>are</i> revolters. All their evil is at Gilgal; Indeed, I came to hate them there! Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of My house! I will no longer love them; All their leaders are rebels. “Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal, I hated them there. Because of their sinful deeds, I will drive them out of my house. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious.
16 Ephraim is struck down; their root is withered; they cannot bear fruit. Even if they bear children, I will slay the darlings of their wombs. Ephraim is stricken; their root is dried up; they shall bear no fruit. Even though they give birth, I will put their beloved children to death. Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay <i>even</i> the beloved <i>fruit</i> of their womb. Ephraim is stricken, their root is dried up, They will produce no fruit. Even though they give birth to children, I will put to death the precious ones of their womb. Ephraim is blighted, their root is withered, they yield no fruit. Even if they bear children, I will slay their cherished offspring.”
17 My God will reject them because they have not obeyed Him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations. My God will reject them because they have not listened to him; they shall be wanderers among the nations. My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations. My God will reject them Because they have not listened to Him; And they will be wanderers among the nations.
