Berean Study Bible Twenty-Four Divisions of PriestsAaron’s descendants were organized into priestly courses to provide an orderly rotation for the sacrificial and worship services of the sanctuary. This arrangement preserved continuity in priestly ministry and ensured that the responsibilities of worship were carried out according to God’s commands. The twenty-four divisions later listed became the established pattern for priestly service in Israel. 2Ch 31:2 Hezekiah reestablished the divisions of the priests… The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Nadab and Abihu died after offering unauthorized fire before the Lord, leaving Eleazar and Ithamar to continue the priestly line. Eleazar’s descendants would later hold the high priesthood, while both remaining branches supplied priests for Israel’s worship. Their service depended on reverence, obedience, and faithfulness to the duties God assigned. Exo 6:23 And Aaron married Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab… But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, Nadab and Abihu, Aaron’s eldest sons, were struck down by the Lord after offering unauthorized fire at the tabernacle. Their deaths during Aaron’s lifetime removed the first heirs of the priesthood and brought deep loss to their father. Lev 10:1-2 Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers,… and they had no sons; Neither man left descendants to continue his family line or share in the priestly succession. Their judgment ended their households within the priesthood. Num 26:60-61 Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron,… so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests. Aaron’s surviving sons continued the priestly ministry. Their descendants became the two priestly families through whom David later arranged the divisions of temple service. Exo 28:1 “Next, have your brother Aaron brought to you… With the help of Eleazar’s descendant Zadok Zadok served faithfully under David and later under Solomon. As a leading priest from Eleazar’s line, he helped establish the priestly arrangements for the temple Solomon would build. 1Ch 6:4-9 Eleazar was the father of Phinehas, Phinehas… and Ithamar’s descendant Ahimelech, Ahimelech represented the priestly line of Ithamar. Including both families preserved their rightful participation in Israel’s priesthood and provided order among the descendants of Aaron. 1Sa 21:1-9 Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest.… David divided them according to the offices of their service. David assigned the priests to regular divisions for their appointed duties. This arrangement ensured orderly, continuing ministry before the Lord and prepared for the temple services in Jerusalem. 1Ch 23:24-32 These were the descendants of Levi by their families…… Since more leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than those of Ithamar, Eleazar and Ithamar were Aaron’s surviving sons after Nadab and Abihu died. By David’s time, Eleazar’s line had produced twice as many qualified family heads as Ithamar’s line, reflecting the growth of the priestly households. 1Ch 23:17 The descendants of Eliezer: Rehabiah was the first.… they were divided accordingly. David organized the priests into divisions for regular service at the sanctuary, giving each family an assigned place in the rotation and preserving order in worship. 2Ch 31:2 Hezekiah reestablished the divisions of the priests… There were sixteen heads of families from the descendants of Eleazar Sixteen priestly divisions came from Eleazar’s descendants, whose line included the high priestly family. 1Ch 23:24 These were the descendants of Levi by their families…… and eight from the descendants of Ithamar. Eight divisions came from Ithamar’s descendants. Together, the twenty-four divisions provided an orderly succession of priests for the service of the house of the Lord. 1Sa 2:27-35 Then a man of God came to Eli and told him,… Thus they were divided by lot, The priestly families received their order of service by lot, removing personal preference and recognizing God’s direction in the arrangement. Jos 18:10 And Joshua cast lots for them in the presence of the LORD… for there were officers of the sanctuary These leading priests oversaw the sacred duties connected with Israel’s worship and guarded the proper order of service. Num 18:5 And you shall attend to the duties of the sanctuary… and officers of God Their responsibility extended to matters belonging to God’s law and the spiritual leadership of the nation. Exo 28:1 “Next, have your brother Aaron brought to you… among both Eleazar’s and Ithamar’s descendants. Both surviving lines of Aaron shared in the priestly divisions, with sixteen heads from Eleazar’s family and eight from Ithamar’s, forming the twenty-four courses of priests. Exo 6:23 And Aaron married Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab… The scribe, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names Shemaiah’s work provided an official record of the priestly divisions and their assigned service. As a Levite, he served in a role consistent with the Levites’ responsibility to support the orderly administration of worship and temple affairs. Neh 7:5 Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles,… in the presence of the king and of the officers: David and Israel’s leading officials witnessed the selection, giving public authority to the arrangement. The priestly courses were not a private matter but an important part of organizing national worship. 1Ch 28:1 Now David summoned all the leaders of Israel to Jerusalem:… Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, Zadok represented the priestly line that would remain prominent under Solomon, while Ahimelech represented the house of Abiathar. Their presence showed that the established priestly families were included in the process. 2Sa 8:17 Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar… and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites— Family leaders participated so that the divisions would be recognized and carried out fairly among the priestly and Levitical households. Ezr 8:29-30 Guard them carefully until you weigh them out… one family being taken from Eleazar, and then one from Ithamar. The lots alternated between the descendants of Aaron’s sons Eleazar and Ithamar. Since Eleazar’s line had more family heads, it received more divisions, yet the process preserved representation for both branches. Num 3:2-4 These are the names of the sons of Aaron:… The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, Jehoiarib, meaning “Yahweh contends” or “Yahweh pleads,” led the first of the twenty-four priestly divisions established by David for regular service at the temple. Ezr 2:37 the descendants of Immer, 1,052; the seventeenth to Hezir, Hezir received the seventeenth lot among the twenty-four priestly divisions established under David. Each course served in turn, providing an orderly rotation for the offerings, worship, and other duties of the temple. A priestly representative of Hezir’s family later joined in sealing the covenant during Nehemiah’s time, showing the continued presence of this line after the exile. Neh 10:20 Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez, Happizzez received the eighteenth lot. Though little else is recorded of this family, its inclusion confirms that every appointed priestly house had a recognized place in the service of the sanctuary. Ezr 2:60 the descendants of Delaiah, the descendants… and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah. Maaziah, meaning “consolation of the Lord” or “strength of the Lord,” led the final priestly division.
