Berean Study Bible Paul’s Message by the Spirit’s PowerPaul writes as a fellow believer to the Corinthian church, recognizing their shared standing in Christ despite the city’s divisions of wealth, status, ethnicity, and background. Corinth’s prosperity and notorious immorality made the presence of a Christian congregation there a striking witness to the gospel’s power. Act 18:1 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. I did not come with eloquence or wisdom Greek society prized polished public speaking and philosophical argument, especially in a major commercial center such as Corinth. Paul did not seek to win converts through rhetorical skill or human speculation, because faith must rest on God’s truth rather than the messenger’s ability. 2Co 11:6 Although I am not a polished speaker, I am not lacking…… as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. Paul announced what God had revealed concerning Jesus Christ, including His crucifixion and resurrection. The gospel carried divine authority because it declared God’s saving work, not a religious system devised by men. Act 18:5 And when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia,… For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you Paul deliberately set aside the philosophical display and rhetorical competition valued in Corinth. He came not to impress his hearers with human wisdom but to proclaim God’s saving truth plainly. Act 18:5 And when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia,… except Jesus Christ Jesus was the center of Paul’s message: the promised Messiah, the Son of God, and the only Savior. This focus also corrected the Corinthians’ tendency to divide themselves around favored teachers and leaders. 2Co 4:5 For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord… and Him crucified. Christ’s death on the cross was essential to Paul’s preaching because it accomplished atonement for sin and reconciliation with God. Though crucifixion was regarded as shameful in the Roman world, the cross revealed God’s wisdom and power, fulfilling the sacrificial pattern that pointed to the final sacrifice of the true Passover Lamb. 1Co 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews… I came to you in weakness Paul arrived in Corinth without relying on personal strength, status, or rhetorical display. His ministry depended on God’s power as he preached Christ in a city marked by idolatry, immorality, and spiritual resistance. 2Co 10:10 His letters are weighty and forceful… and fear, He understood the seriousness of proclaiming the gospel and the opposition it could bring. His fear reflected humility before God and awareness of the responsibility entrusted to him. Act 18:9-10 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:… and with much trembling. The burden of his mission affected him deeply. Rather than hiding his frailty, Paul’s manner showed that the message’s effectiveness rested on the work of God, not the confidence or ability of the messenger. Php 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed… My message and my preaching Paul’s ministry in Corinth centered on the Gospel of Christ crucified. He did not seek to impress his hearers with philosophical speculation or polished public speaking, but to proclaim the saving work of Jesus plainly and faithfully. Gal 1:11-12 For I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached… were not with persuasive words of wisdom, Corinthian culture admired skilled speakers and human philosophy. Paul refused to make the Gospel depend on rhetorical ability, knowing that human wisdom cannot produce faith or replace the truth of Christ’s death and resurrection. 1Co 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach… but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, The Holy Spirit confirmed the Gospel through changed lives, spiritual gifts, and God’s work among the believers. Their faith rested on God’s power rather than on Paul’s personal skill as a speaker. 1Th 1:5 our gospel came to you not only in word,… so that your faith Faith is a settled trust in God and His promises, involving personal reliance rather than mere agreement with religious ideas. Paul wanted the Corinthians’ confidence to be grounded in what God had done through Christ. Mrk 11:22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus said to them. would not rest on men’s wisdom, Corinth admired public speakers, philosophers, and skilled argument. Paul rejected any foundation built on human insight, eloquence, or cultural prestige, since human wisdom cannot reveal God’s saving purposes. Jer 9:23-24 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man… but on God’s power. God’s power was displayed in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ and continues to work in those who believe. The gospel stands because God acts, not because it can be sustained by human persuasion. 1Pe 1:5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power…
Spiritual WisdomPaul addresses believers who have moved beyond worldly standards of judgment and are able to receive the deeper implications of the gospel. The wisdom proclaimed is Christ crucified and the saving purpose of God, revealed by the Holy Spirit rather than discovered through human reasoning. Heb 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use… but not the wisdom of this age Corinth was shaped by Greek culture, where public speakers, philosophers, and intellectual achievement commanded admiration. Paul distinguishes God’s revealed wisdom from the changing ideas and values that governed the surrounding world. 1Co 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness… or of the rulers of this age, Earthly authorities, including political and religious leaders, rejected Christ and acted according to wisdom opposed to God. Their actions also reflected the influence of spiritual powers working against God’s purposes. Act 4:26-27 The kings of the earth take their stand… who are coming to nothing. Human rulers, institutions, and philosophies possess no lasting authority. God will bring every opposing power to an end, while His purpose in Christ remains eternal. Isa 40:23-24 He brings the princes to nothing and makes the rulers… No, we speak of the mysterious and hidden wisdom of God, Paul contrasts God’s saving purpose with the philosophical wisdom admired in Corinth. Centered on Christ’s crucifixion and redemption, this wisdom could not be reached by human reasoning and was revealed by the Holy Spirit. Col 2:2-3 that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love,… which He destined for our glory God established this purpose for the eternal good of His people, who will share in Christ’s glory when He returns. Their future is bound to God’s saving work rather than worldly status or achievement. Rom 9:23-24 What if He did this to make the riches of His glory… before time began. God’s plan of salvation existed before creation and was not a response to human events. His purposes are eternal, certain, and unchanged by the course of history. Tit 1:2 in the hope of eternal life, which God,… None of the rulers of this age understood it. Political and religious leaders, including Roman authorities and the Jewish Sanhedrin, failed to recognize God’s saving purpose revealed in Christ. Behind their actions stood the spiritual powers opposed to God, also blind to the wisdom He had hidden in the Gospel. Act 3:17 And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance… For if they had, Had they understood that Jesus was the promised Messiah and the Son of God, they would not have acted against Him. Their rejection fulfilled God’s sovereign purpose without excusing their unbelief and guilt. Jhn 16:3 They will do these things because they have not known… they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. Jesus was executed by Roman crucifixion, a punishment reserved for the most serious criminals and considered a curse under Jewish law, at the urging of Jewish leaders, yet the One they condemned was the Lord who shares God’s glory. His death became the appointed sacrifice through which God accomplished redemption. Act 2:23 He was delivered up by God’s set plan and foreknowledge,… Rather, as it is written: Paul grounds his teaching in the prophetic Scriptures, turning from the limits of human wisdom to what God has revealed. Rom 3:4 Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a liar.… “No eye has seen, Human observation cannot discover the full reality of God’s saving purpose. Isa 64:4 From ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived… no ear has heard, Neither public teaching, tradition, nor ordinary reports can disclose what God has determined. Deu 29:4 Yet to this day the LORD has not given you… no heart has imagined, Human thought and imagination cannot reach the greatness of God’s plan. Rom 11:34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been”… what God has prepared God has already purposed and provided what His people could not obtain or foresee on their own. Jhn 14:2-3 In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so,… for those who love Him.” These promises belong to those who are united to God in faithful love, a love shown by receiving and obeying His truth. Deu 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God,… But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit. God’s wisdom in Christ was hidden from human pride and speculation but made known by the Holy Spirit. Paul speaks of the truth entrusted to the apostles and proclaimed to the church: God’s eternal purpose of salvation through the crucified and risen Christ. Eph 3:5 which was not made known to men in other generations… The Spirit searches all things, The Holy Spirit possesses complete knowledge of God’s will and works. His searching describes His perfect awareness, not an effort to discover what is unknown. Rom 8:27 And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit,… even the deep things of God. God’s purposes, wisdom, and plan of redemption lie beyond the reach of the natural mind. The Spirit reveals what God has determined, enabling believers to understand the truth God has made known. Dan 2:22 He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows… For who among men knows the thoughts of man except his own spirit within him? Human beings possess an inward awareness of their own thoughts, motives, and intentions that remains hidden from others. Outward actions may be observed, but the inner life is known fully only to the person himself and, ultimately, to God. Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty,… So too, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. God’s purposes and wisdom are inaccessible to human investigation apart from His revelation. The Holy Spirit fully knows the mind of God because He is God, and He makes known what God has chosen to reveal to His people. Isa 40:13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or informed Him… We have not received the spirit of the world, Paul contrasts the outlook of fallen humanity with the revelation given by God. In prosperous, morally permissive Corinth, believers faced constant pressure to adopt the city’s standards of status, pleasure, and human wisdom. Such influences cannot lead people to understand God’s saving purpose. Jhn 14:17 The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him… but the Spirit who is from God, Believers have received the Holy Spirit, sent by God and dwelling within them. He teaches, guides, and enables them to recognize the truth God has revealed through Christ. Jhn 15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you… that we may understand what God has freely given us. Salvation, forgiveness, adoption, grace, and the promises of eternal life are God’s gifts, not rewards earned by human effort. The Spirit gives believers understanding of these blessings and of the wisdom God has made known in His word. Eph 1:17-18 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father,… And this is what we speak, Paul refers to the message proclaimed by him and the other apostles. Their teaching carried Christ’s authorized revelation to the churches and established the doctrinal foundation of the early Christian community. 1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us… not in words taught us by human wisdom, The gospel was not shaped by the rhetorical methods, philosophical systems, or intellectual standards prized in Corinth and the wider Greco-Roman world. Its truth and authority did not depend on human skill or persuasion. 1Co 1:20-21 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe?… but in words taught by the Spirit, The Holy Spirit enabled the apostles to communicate what God had revealed. Their message came from God rather than human speculation, faithfully declaring the saving work of Christ and the realities of God’s kingdom. Mrk 13:11 But when they arrest you and hand you over,… expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. Spiritual realities require spiritual discernment and Spirit-given communication. Those who receive the Spirit can understand and recognize the truth God has made known. Jhn 6:63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing.… The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. The natural man is the person who remains unregenerate and governed by fallen human nature. Corinth prized philosophy, rhetoric, and public displays of wisdom, yet human reason alone could not receive God’s revealed truth. The Spirit makes known what God has accomplished through Christ and applies that truth to those who belong to Him. Jhn 14:17 The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him… For they are foolishness to him, The gospel of a crucified Savior offended the standards of Greco-Roman wisdom and self-sufficiency. What God declared to be His power and wisdom appeared weak and irrational to those who judged it by worldly measures. 1Co 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness… and he cannot understand them, The problem is not a lack of intelligence or education but spiritual blindness. Apart from God’s renewing work, sinners resist His truth and remain unable to grasp its true meaning and value. Jhn 8:47 Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God.… because they are spiritually discerned. Spiritual truth is rightly understood only through the Holy Spirit, who gives believers discernment to recognize, receive, and live according to God’s revelation. Jhn 16:13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes… The spiritual man judges all things, The believer indwelt and directed by the Holy Spirit is able to discern matters according to God’s revealed truth rather than worldly standards. Paul contrasts such discernment with the inability of the natural man to receive the things of God. Spiritual judgment does not authorize criticism or self-righteousness; it enables faithful evaluation of teaching, conduct, and claims in light of God’s wisdom. Heb 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use… but he himself is not subject to anyone’s judgment. Those who reject the Spirit cannot rightly assess the spiritual understanding and obedience of one led by Him, because they do not share the standard by which such matters are discerned. Paul does not exempt believers from correction within the church or from God’s judgment. Rather, the spiritual person’s life and motives are ultimately known and judged by the Lord, who sees the heart. 1Co 4:3-4 I care very little, however, if I am judged by you… “For who has known the mind of the Lord, God’s wisdom is infinite and beyond human discovery. No person can fully comprehend His purposes, judgments, or plans apart from what He chooses to reveal. Isaiah declared the same truth when portraying the Lord as the Creator and ruler of all things, utterly independent of human counsel. Isa 40:13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or informed Him… so as to instruct Him?” No one is qualified to advise, correct, or direct God. His knowledge is perfect, while human understanding is limited and dependent. The Lord’s questions to Job similarly exposed the gulf between God’s wisdom and man’s perspective. Isa 40:14 Whom did He consult to enlighten Him, and who taught Him… But we have the mind of Christ. Believers receive spiritual understanding through the Holy Spirit and are united to Christ. This does not mean they possess exhaustive knowledge or become equal with God, but that they are enabled to discern what God has revealed and to think in keeping with Christ’s truth, character, and purposes.
