Naaman Cured of Leprosy
(Luke 17:11–19)

1  וְ֠נַעֲמָן (And Naaman) שַׂר־ (commander) צְבָ֨א (of the army) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (of the king) אֲרָ֜ם (of Aram) הָיָ֣ה (was) אִישׁ֩ (a man) גָּד֨וֹל (great) לִפְנֵ֤י (in the eyes) אֲדֹנָיו֙ (of his master), וּנְשֻׂ֣א (and was lifted) פָנִ֔ים (of face), כִּֽי־ (because) ב֛וֹ (by him) נָֽתַן־ (had given) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) תְּשׁוּעָ֖ה (deliverance) לַאֲרָ֑ם (to Aram). וְהָאִ֗ישׁ (And the man) הָיָ֛ה (was) גִּבּ֥וֹר (mighty) חַ֖יִל (in valor)— מְצֹרָֽע׃ (a leper).

2  וַאֲרָם֙ (And Aram) יָצְא֣וּ (had gone out) גְדוּדִ֔ים (out in bands), וַיִּשְׁבּ֛וּ (and had brought back captive) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) נַעֲרָ֣ה (a girl) קְטַנָּ֑ה (young). וַתְּהִ֕י (And she waited) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face of) אֵ֥שֶׁת (the wife) נַעֲמָֽן׃ (of Naaman). 3  וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And she said) אֶל־ (to) גְּבִרְתָּ֔הּ (her mistress), אַחֲלֵ֣י (If only) אֲדֹנִ֔י (my master were) לִפְנֵ֥י (with) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who is) בְּשֹׁמְר֑וֹן (in Samaria), אָ֛ז (then) יֶאֱסֹ֥ף (he would heal) אֹת֖וֹ (him) מִצָּרַעְתּֽוֹ׃ (of his leprosy)!

4  וַיָּבֹ֕א (And he went in) וַיַּגֵּ֥ד (and declared) לַאדֹנָ֖יו (to his master), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), כָּזֹ֤את (Thus) וְכָזֹאת֙ (and thus) דִּבְּרָ֣ה (said) הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה (the girl) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who is) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).”

5  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said), מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אֲרָם֙ (of Aram) לֶךְ־ (Go), בֹּ֔א (enter), וְאֶשְׁלְחָ֥ה (and I will send) סֵ֖פֶר (a letter) אֶל־ (to) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel).

וַיֵּלֶךְ֩ (And he departed) וַיִּקַּ֨ח (and took) בְּיָד֜וֹ (with him) עֶ֣שֶׂר (ten) כִּכְּרֵי־ (talents) כֶ֗סֶף (of silver), וְשֵׁ֤שֶׁת (and six) אֲלָפִים֙ (thousand) זָהָ֔ב (shekels of gold), וְעֶ֖שֶׂר (and ten) חֲלִיפ֥וֹת (changes) בְּגָדִֽים׃ (of garments).

6  וַיָּבֵ֣א (And he brought) הַסֵּ֔פֶר (the letter) אֶל־ (to) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) כְּב֨וֹא (when comes) הַסֵּ֤פֶר (the letter) הַזֶּה֙ (this) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you); הִנֵּ֨ה (be advised) שָׁלַ֤חְתִּי (that I have sent) אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ (to you) אֶת־ (-) נַעֲמָ֣ן (Naaman) עַבְדִּ֔י (my servant) וַאֲסַפְתּ֖וֹ (that you may heal him) מִצָּרַעְתּֽוֹ׃ (of his leprosy).

7  וַיְהִ֡י (And it came to pass), כִּקְרֹא֩ (in reading) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) הַסֵּ֜פֶר (the letter), וַיִּקְרַ֣ע (that he tore) בְּגָדָ֗יו (his garments) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), הַאֱלֹהִ֥ים (God) אָ֙נִי֙ (am I) לְהָמִ֣ית (to kill) וּֽלְהַחֲי֔וֹת (and make alive), כִּֽי־ (that) זֶה֙ (this one) שֹׁלֵ֣חַ (sends) אֵלַ֔י (to me) לֶאֱסֹ֥ף (to heal) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) מִצָּֽרַעְתּ֑וֹ (of his leprosy)? כִּ֤י (Upon) אַךְ־ (thus) דְּעֽוּ־ (consider), נָא֙ (please), וּרְא֔וּ (and see) כִּֽי־ (how) מִתְאַנֶּ֥ה (is presenting himself) ה֖וּא (he) לִֽי׃ (to me).

8  וַיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass), כִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ׀ (in hearing) אֱלִישָׁ֣ע (Elisha) אִישׁ־ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים (of God) כִּֽי־ (that) קָרַ֤ע (had torn) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) בְּגָדָ֔יו (his garments), וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ (that he sent) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (the king), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), לָ֥מָּה (Why) קָרַ֖עְתָּ (have you torn) בְּגָדֶ֑יךָ (your garments)? יָבֹֽא־ (Let him come) נָ֣א (please) אֵלַ֔י (to me), וְיֵדַ֕ע (and he shall know) כִּ֛י (that) יֵ֥שׁ (there is) נָבִ֖יא (a prophet) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (in Israel).

9  וַיָּבֹ֥א (And went) נַעֲמָ֖ן (Naaman) בְּסוּסוֹ (with his horses) וּבְרִכְבּ֑וֹ (and with his chariot), וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד (and he stood) פֶּֽתַח־ (at the door) הַבַּ֖יִת (of the house) לֶאֱלִישָֽׁע׃ (of Elisha).

10  וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח (And sent) אֵלָ֛יו (to him) אֱלִישָׁ֖ע (Elisha) מַלְאָ֣ךְ (a messenger), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הָל֗וֹךְ (Go) וְרָחַצְתָּ֤ (and wash) שֶֽׁבַע־ (seven) פְּעָמִים֙ (times) בַּיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (in the Jordan), וְיָשֹׁ֧ב (and shall be restored) בְּשָׂרְךָ֛ (your flesh) לְךָ֖ (to you), וּטְהָֽר׃ (and you shall be clean).

11  וַיִּקְצֹ֥ף (And became furious) נַעֲמָ֖ן (Naaman) וַיֵּלַ֑ךְ (and went away) וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (and said), הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), אָמַ֜רְתִּי (I said) אֵלַ֣י׀ (to myself) יֵצֵ֣א (coming out) יָצ֗וֹא (he would come out) וְעָמַד֙ (and stand), וְקָרָא֙ (and call) בְּשֵׁם־ (on the name) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֔יו (his God), וְהֵנִ֥יף (and wave) יָד֛וֹ (his hand) אֶל־ (over) הַמָּק֖וֹם (the place), וְאָסַ֥ף (and heal) הַמְּצֹרָֽע׃ (the leprosy). 12  הֲלֹ֡א (Are not) טוֹב֩ (better) אֲבָנָה (the Abanah) וּפַרְפַּ֜ר (and the Pharpar) נַהֲר֣וֹת (the rivers) דַּמֶּ֗שֶׂק (of Damascus) מִכֹּל֙ (than all) מֵימֵ֣י (the waters) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel)? הֲלֹֽא־ (Could not) אֶרְחַ֥ץ (I wash) בָּהֶ֖ם (in them) וְטָהָ֑רְתִּי (and be clean)? וַיִּ֖פֶן (And he turned) וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (and went away) בְּחֵמָֽה׃ (in a rage).

13  וַיִּגְּשׁ֣וּ (And came near) עֲבָדָיו֮ (his servants) וַיְדַבְּר֣וּ (and spoke) אֵלָיו֒ (to him), וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ (and said), אָבִי֙ (My father), דָּבָ֣ר (if something) גָּד֗וֹל (great) הַנָּבִ֛יא (the prophet) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had spoken) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you), הֲל֣וֹא (would not) תַעֲשֶׂ֑ה (you have done it)? וְאַ֛ף (Then how much more) כִּֽי־ (when) אָמַ֥ר (he says) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you), רְחַ֥ץ (Wash) וּטְהָֽר׃ (and be clean)?

14  וַיֵּ֗רֶד (And he went down) וַיִּטְבֹּ֤ל (and dipped) בַּיַּרְדֵּן֙ (in the Jordan) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) פְּעָמִ֔ים (times), כִּדְבַ֖ר (according to the saying) אִ֣ישׁ (of the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God). וַיָּ֣שָׁב (And was restored) בְּשָׂר֗וֹ (his flesh) כִּבְשַׂ֛ר (like the flesh) נַ֥עַר (of a child) קָטֹ֖ן (little), וַיִּטְהָֽר׃ (and he was clean).

Gehazi’s Greed and Leprosy

15  וַיָּשָׁב֩ (And he returned) אֶל־ (to) אִ֨ישׁ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֜ים (of God), ה֣וּא (he) וְכָֽל־ (and all) מַחֲנֵ֗הוּ (his camp), וַיָּבֹא֮ (and came) וַיַּעֲמֹ֣ד (and stood) לְפָנָיו֒ (before his face), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and he said), הִנֵּה־ (Behold), נָ֤א (now) יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ (I know) כִּ֣י (that) אֵ֤ין (not) אֱלֹהִים֙ (is God) בְּכָל־ (in all) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth), כִּ֖י (for) אִם־ (but) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (in Israel). וְעַתָּ֛ה (And now) קַח־ (take) נָ֥א (please) בְרָכָ֖ה (a gift) מֵאֵ֥ת (from) עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ (your servant).

16  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), חַי־ (As lives) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) עָמַ֥דְתִּי (I stand) לְפָנָ֖יו (before), אִם־ (nothing) אֶקָּ֑ח (I will receive). וַיִּפְצַר־ (And he urged) בּ֥וֹ (him) לָקַ֖חַת (to take it), וַיְמָאֵֽן׃ (and he refused).

17  וַיֹּאמֶר֮ (And said) נַעֲמָן֒ (Naaman), וָלֹ֕א (And if not) יֻתַּן־ (let be given) נָ֣א (please) לְעַבְדְּךָ֔ (to your servant) מַשָּׂ֥א (a load) צֶֽמֶד־ (as a pair) פְּרָדִ֖ים (of mules) אֲדָמָ֑ה (of earth)? כִּ֡י (For) לֽוֹא־ (not) יַעֲשֶׂה֩ (will offer) ע֨וֹד (anymore) עַבְדְּךָ֜ (your servant) עֹלָ֤ה (either burnt offering) וָזֶ֙בַח֙ (or sacrifice) לֵאלֹהִ֣ים (to gods) אֲחֵרִ֔ים (other), כִּ֖י (for) אִם־ (but) לַיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH). 18  לַדָּבָ֣ר (In the thing) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), יִסְלַ֥ח (may pardon) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לְעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ (your servant), בְּב֣וֹא (when goes) אֲדֹנִ֣י (my master) בֵית־ (into the temple) רִמּוֹן֩ (of Rimmon) לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֨ת (to worship) שָׁ֜מָּה (there), וְה֣וּא׀ (and he) נִשְׁעָ֣ן (leans) עַל־ (on) יָדִ֗י (my hand), וְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֵ֙יתִי֙ (and I bow down) בֵּ֣ית (in the temple) רִמֹּ֔ן (of Rimmon). בְּהִשְׁתַּחֲוָיָ֙תִי֙ (In my bowing myself) בֵּ֣ית (in the temple) רִמֹּ֔ן (of Rimmon), יִסְלַח־ (may pardon) נא (please) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) לְעַבְדְּךָ֖ (your servant) בַּדָּבָ֥ר (in the thing) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

19  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And he said) ל֖וֹ (to him), לֵ֣ךְ (Go) לְשָׁל֑וֹם (in peace).

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (And he departed) מֵאִתּ֖וֹ (from him) כִּבְרַת־ (a distance) אָֽרֶץ׃ס (of land). 20  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) גֵּיחֲזִ֗י (Gehazi) נַעַר֮ (the servant) אֱלִישָׁ֣ע (of Elisha) אִישׁ־ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִים֒ (of God), הִנֵּ֣ה׀ (Behold), חָשַׂ֣ךְ (has spared) אֲדֹנִ֗י (my master) אֶֽת־ (-) נַעֲמָ֤ן (Naaman) הָֽאֲרַמִּי֙ (Aramaean)— הַזֶּ֔ה (this) מִקַּ֥חַת (not receiving) מִיָּד֖וֹ (from his hands) אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) הֵבִ֑יא (he brought). חַי־ (As lives) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) כִּֽי־ (for) אִם־ (but) רַ֣צְתִּי (I will run) אַחֲרָ֔יו (after him) וְלָקַחְתִּ֥י (and get) מֵאִתּ֖וֹ (from him) מְאֽוּמָה׃ (something).

21  וַיִּרְדֹּ֥ף (And pursued) גֵּיחֲזִ֖י (Gehazi) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) נַֽעֲמָ֑ן (Naaman). וַיִּרְאֶ֤ה (And saw him) נַֽעֲמָן֙ (Naaman) רָ֣ץ (running) אַחֲרָ֔יו (after him), וַיִּפֹּ֞ל (and he got down) מֵעַ֧ל (from) הַמֶּרְכָּבָ֛ה (the chariot) לִקְרָאת֖וֹ (to meet him) וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (and said), הֲשָׁלֽוֹם׃ (Peace)?

22  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (And he said), שָׁל֗וֹם (Peace). אֲדֹנִי֮ (My master) שְׁלָחַ֣נִי (has sent me) לֵאמֹר֒ (saying), הִנֵּ֣ה (Behold), עַתָּ֡ה (now) זֶ֠ה (this) בָּ֣אוּ (have come) אֵלַ֧י (to me) שְׁנֵֽי־ (two) נְעָרִ֛ים (young men) מֵהַ֥ר (from the mountains) אֶפְרַ֖יִם (of Ephraim) מִבְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) הַנְּבִיאִ֑ים (of the prophets). תְּנָה־ (Give) נָּ֤א (please) לָהֶם֙ (to them) כִּכַּר־ (a talent) כֶּ֔סֶף (of silver) וּשְׁתֵּ֖י (and two) חֲלִפ֥וֹת (changes) בְּגָדִֽים׃ (of garments).

23  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) נַעֲמָ֔ן (Naaman), הוֹאֵ֖ל (Be resolved), קַ֣ח (take) כִּכָּרָ֑יִם (two talents). וַיִּפְרָץ־ (And he urged) בּ֗וֹ (him) וַיָּצַר֩ (and bound) כִּכְּרַ֨יִם (two talents) כֶּ֜סֶף (of silver) בִּשְׁנֵ֣י (in two) חֲרִטִ֗ים (bags), וּשְׁתֵּי֙ (and two) חֲלִפ֣וֹת (changes) בְּגָדִ֔ים (of garments), וַיִּתֵּן֙ (and he gave them) אֶל־ (to) שְׁנֵ֣י (two) נְעָרָ֔יו (of his servants), וַיִּשְׂא֖וּ (and they carried them) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (on ahead of him).

24  וַיָּבֹא֙ (And he came) אֶל־ (to) הָעֹ֔פֶל (the citadel), וַיִּקַּ֥ח (and he took them) מִיָּדָ֖ם (from their hand) וַיִּפְקֹ֣ד (and stored them away) בַּבָּ֑יִת (in the house) וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח (and he sent away) אֶת־ (-) הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים (the men), וַיֵּלֵֽכוּ׃ (and they departed).

25  וְהוּא־ (And he) בָא֙ (went in) וַיַּעֲמֹ֣ד (and stood) אֶל־ (before) אֲדֹנָ֔יו (his master). וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) אֱלִישָׁ֔ע (Elisha), מֵאָן (From where), גֵּחֲזִ֑י (Gehazi)?

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), לֹֽא־ (Not) הָלַ֥ךְ (did go) עַבְדְּךָ֖ (Your servant) אָ֥נֶה (where) וָאָֽנָה׃ (and where).

26  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And he said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him), לֹא־ (Not) לִבִּ֣י (my heart) הָלַ֔ךְ (did go) כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר (when) הָֽפַךְ־ (turned back) אִ֛ישׁ (the man) מֵעַ֥ל (from) מֶרְכַּבְתּ֖וֹ (his chariot) לִקְרָאתֶ֑ךָ (to meet you)? הַעֵ֞ת (Is it the time) לָקַ֤חַת (to receive) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ (silver), וְלָקַ֣חַת (and to receive) בְּגָדִ֔ים (garments), וְזֵיתִ֤ים (and olive groves), וּכְרָמִים֙ (and vineyards), וְצֹ֣אן (and sheep), וּבָקָ֔ר (and oxen), וַעֲבָדִ֖ים (and menservants), וּשְׁפָחֽוֹת׃ (and maidservants)? 27  וְצָרַ֤עַת (And the leprosy) נַֽעֲמָן֙ (of Naaman) תִּֽדְבַּק־ (shall cling) בְּךָ֔ (to you) וּֽבְזַרְעֲךָ (and to your seed) לְעוֹלָ֑ם (forever).

וַיֵּצֵ֥א (And he went out) מִלְּפָנָ֖יו (from before his face), מְצֹרָ֥ע (leprous) כַּשָּֽׁלֶג׃ס (as the snow).
