Cain and Abel
(Hebrews 11:4)

1 וְהָ֣אָדָ֔ם (And the man) יָדַ֖ע (knew) אֶת־ (-) חַוָּ֣ה (Eve) אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ (his wife), וַתַּ֙הַר֙ (and she conceived) וַתֵּ֣לֶד (and gave birth to) אֶת־ (-) קַ֔יִן (Cain) וַתֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), קָנִ֥יתִי (I have acquired) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) אֶת־ (by) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

2 וַתֹּ֣סֶף (And she continued) לָלֶ֔דֶת (to give birth) אֶת־ (-) אָחִ֖יו (to his brother) אֶת־ (-) הָ֑בֶל (Abel). וַֽיְהִי־ (And was) הֶ֙בֶל֙ (Abel) רֹ֣עֵה (a keeper) צֹ֔אן (of sheep), וְקַ֕יִן (and Cain) הָיָ֖ה (was) עֹבֵ֥ד (a worker) אֲדָמָֽה׃ (of the ground).

3 וַֽיְהִ֖י (And it came to pass) מִקֵּ֣ץ (at the end) יָמִ֑ים (of days) וַיָּבֵ֨א (that brought) קַ֜יִן (Cain) מִפְּרִ֧י (some of the fruit) הָֽאֲדָמָ֛ה (of the ground) מִנְחָ֖ה (an offering) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH).

4 וְהֶ֨בֶל (And Abel) הֵבִ֥יא (brought) גַם־ (also) ה֛וּא (he) מִבְּכֹר֥וֹת (from the firstborn) צֹאנ֖וֹ (of his flock), וּמֵֽחֶלְבֵהֶ֑ן (even from their fat). וַיִּ֣שַׁע (And looked with favor) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (unto) הֶ֖בֶל (Abel) וְאֶל־ (and unto) מִנְחָתֽוֹ׃ (his offering).

5 וְאֶל־ (And to) קַ֥יִן (Cain) וְאֶל־ (and to) מִנְחָת֖וֹ (his offering) לֹ֣א (not) שָׁעָ֑ה (He did not look with favor). וַיִּ֤חַר (And it burned) לְקַ֙יִן֙ (to Cain) מְאֹ֔ד (exceedingly), וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ (and fell) פָּנָֽיו׃ (his face).

6 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) קָ֑יִן (Cain), לָ֚מָּה (Why) חָ֣רָה (has it burned) לָ֔ךְ (to you)? וְלָ֖מָּה (And why) נָפְל֥וּ (has fallen) פָנֶֽיךָ׃ (your face)?

7 הֲל֤וֹא (Is it not) אִם־ (that if) תֵּיטִיב֙ (you do well), שְׂאֵ֔ת (there is elevation)? וְאִם֙ (But if) לֹ֣א (not) תֵיטִ֔יב (you do well), לַפֶּ֖תַח (then at the door) חַטָּ֣את (sin) רֹבֵ֑ץ (is crouching), וְאֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ (and for you) תְּשׁ֣וּקָת֔וֹ (its desire is); וְאַתָּ֖ה (and you) תִּמְשָׁל־ (must rule) בּֽוֹ׃ (over it).

8 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And spoke) קַ֖יִן (Cain) אֶל־ (to) הֶ֣בֶל (Abel) אָחִ֑יו (his brother): וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בִּהְיוֹתָ֣ם (in their being) בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה (in the field) וַיָּ֥קָם (that rose up) קַ֛יִן (Cain) אֶל־ (against) הֶ֥בֶל (Abel) אָחִ֖יו (his brother) וַיַּהַרְגֵֽהוּ׃ (and killed him).

9 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) קַ֔יִן (Cain), אֵ֖י (Where is) הֶ֣בֶל (Abel) אָחִ֑יךָ (your brother)? וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And He said), לֹ֣א (Not) יָדַ֔עְתִּי (do I know)? הֲשֹׁמֵ֥ר (A keeper) אָחִ֖י (for my brother) אָנֹֽכִי׃ (am I)?

10 וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And He said), מֶ֣ה (What) עָשִׂ֑יתָ (have you done)? ק֚וֹל (The voice) דְּמֵ֣י (of the bloods) אָחִ֔יךָ (of your brother) צֹעֲקִ֥ים (is crying out) אֵלַ֖י (to Me) מִן־ (from) הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃ (the ground)!

11 וְעַתָּ֖ה (And now) אָר֣וּר (cursed are) אָ֑תָּה (you) מִן־ (from) הָֽאֲדָמָה֙ (the ground), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) פָּצְתָ֣ה (has opened) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֔יהָ (its mouth) לָקַ֛חַת (to receive) אֶת־ (-) דְּמֵ֥י (the bloods) אָחִ֖יךָ (of your brother) מִיָּדֶֽךָ׃ (from your hand).

12 כִּ֤י (When) תַֽעֲבֹד֙ (you work) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the ground), לֹֽא־ (not) תֹסֵ֥ף (shall it continue) תֵּת־ (to give) כֹּחָ֖הּ (its strength) לָ֑ךְ (to you). נָ֥ע (A fugitive) וָנָ֖ד (and a wanderer) תִּֽהְיֶ֥ה (you shall be) בָאָֽרֶץ׃ (on the earth).

13 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) קַ֖יִן (Cain) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), גָּד֥וֹל (Greater is) עֲוֺנִ֖י (my punishment) מִנְּשֹֽׂא׃ (than I can bear)!

14 הֵן֩ (Behold), גֵּרַ֨שְׁתָּ (You have driven out) אֹתִ֜י (me) הַיּ֗וֹם (this day), מֵעַל֙ (from) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה (of the ground); וּמִפָּנֶ֖יךָ (and from Your face) אֶסָּתֵ֑ר (I shall be hidden); וְהָיִ֜יתִי (and I shall be) נָ֤ע (a fugitive) וָנָד֙ (and a wanderer) בָּאָ֔רֶץ (on the earth); וְהָיָ֥ה (and it will come to pass that), כָל־ (anyone) מֹצְאִ֖י (finding me) יַֽהַרְגֵֽנִי׃ (will kill me).

15 וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) ל֣וֹ (to him) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), לָכֵן֙ (Therefore) כָּל־ (anyone) הֹרֵ֣ג (who kills) קַ֔יִן (Cain), שִׁבְעָתַ֖יִם (sevenfold) יֻקָּ֑ם (shall vengeance be taken on him). וַיָּ֨שֶׂם (And set) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) לְקַ֙יִן֙ (on Cain) א֔וֹת (a mark), לְבִלְתִּ֥י (lest) הַכּוֹת־ (should slay) אֹת֖וֹ (him) כָּל־ (anyone) מֹצְאֽוֹ׃ (finding him).

16 וַיֵּ֥צֵא (And went out) קַ֖יִן (Cain) מִלִּפְנֵ֣י (from before the face) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב (and dwelt) בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ (in the land) נ֖וֹד (of Nod), קִדְמַת־ (east) עֵֽדֶן׃ (of Eden).

The Descendants of Cain

17 וַיֵּ֤דַע (And knew) קַ֙יִן֙ (Cain) אֶת־ (-) אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ (his wife), וַתַּ֖הַר (and she conceived) וַתֵּ֣לֶד (and gave birth to) אֶת־ (-) חֲנ֑וֹךְ (Enoch). וַֽיְהִי֙ (And he began) בֹּ֣נֶה (building) עִ֔יר (a city) וַיִּקְרָא֙ (and he called) שֵׁ֣ם (the name) הָעִ֔יר (of the city) כְּשֵׁ֖ם (according to the name) בְּנ֥וֹ (of his son), חֲנֽוֹךְ׃ (Enoch).

18 וַיִּוָּלֵ֤ד (And was born) לַֽחֲנוֹךְ֙ (to Enoch) אֶת־ (-) עִירָ֔ד (Irad), וְעִירָ֕ד (and Irad) יָלַ֖ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) מְחֽוּיָאֵ֑ל (Mehujael), וּמְחִיּיָאֵ֗ל (and Mehujael) יָלַד֙ (begat) אֶת־ (-) מְת֣וּשָׁאֵ֔ל (Methushael), וּמְתוּשָׁאֵ֖ל (and Methushael) יָלַ֥ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) לָֽמֶךְ׃ (Lamech).

19 וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ (And took) ל֥וֹ (for himself) לֶ֖מֶךְ (Lamech) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) נָשִׁ֑ים (wives): שֵׁ֤ם (The name) הָֽאַחַת֙ (of the one) עָדָ֔ה (was Adah), וְשֵׁ֥ם (and the name) הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית (of the second) צִלָּֽה׃ (was Zillah).

20 וַתֵּ֥לֶד (And bore) עָדָ֖ה (Adah) אֶת־ (-) יָבָ֑ל (Jabal); ה֣וּא (he) הָיָ֔ה (was) אֲבִ֕י (the father) יֹשֵׁ֥ב (of those dwelling) אֹ֖הֶל (in tents) וּמִקְנֶֽה׃ (and having livestock).

21 וְשֵׁ֥ם (And the name) אָחִ֖יו (of his brother) יוּבָ֑ל (was Jubal); ה֣וּא (he) הָיָ֔ה (was) אֲבִ֕י (the father) כָּל־ (of all) תֹּפֵ֥שׂ (who play) כִּנּ֖וֹר (the harp) וְעוּגָֽב׃ (and flute).

22 וְצִלָּ֣ה (And Zillah) גַם־ (also) הִ֗וא (she) יָֽלְדָה֙ (bore) אֶת־ (-) תּ֣וּבַל (Tubal-) קַ֔יִן (cain), לֹטֵ֕שׁ (a forger) כָּל־ (of every) חֹרֵ֥שׁ (implement) נְחֹ֖שֶׁת (of bronze) וּבַרְזֶ֑ל (and iron). וַֽאֲח֥וֹת (And the sister) תּֽוּבַל־ (of Tubal-) קַ֖יִן (cain) נַֽעֲמָֽה׃ (was Naamah).

23 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) לֶ֜מֶךְ (Lamech) לְנָשָׁ֗יו (to his wives): עָדָ֤ה (Adah) וְצִלָּה֙ (and Zillah), שְׁמַ֣עַן (hear) קוֹלִ֔י (my voice); נְשֵׁ֣י (wives) לֶ֔מֶךְ (of Lamech), הַאְזֵ֖נָּה (give ear to) אִמְרָתִ֑י (my speech). כִּ֣י (For) אִ֤ישׁ (a man) הָרַ֙גְתִּי֙ (I have killed) לְפִצְעִ֔י (for my wound), וְיֶ֖לֶד (and a young man) לְחַבֻּרָתִֽי׃ (for my bruise).

24 כִּ֥י (If) שִׁבְעָתַ֖יִם (sevenfold) יֻקַּם־ (shall be avenged) קָ֑יִן (Cain), וְלֶ֖מֶךְ (and Lamech) שִׁבְעִ֥ים (seventy) וְשִׁבְעָֽה׃ (and sevenfold).

Seth and Enosh

25 וַיֵּ֨דַע (And knew) אָדָ֥ם (Adam) עוֹד֙ (again) אֶת־ (-) אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ (his wife); וַתֵּ֣לֶד (and she gave birth to) בֵּ֔ן (a son) וַתִּקְרָ֥א (and called) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) שֵׁ֑ת (Seth), כִּ֣י (For), שָֽׁת־ (has appointed) לִ֤י (for me) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) זֶ֣רַע (seed) אַחֵ֔ר (another) תַּ֣חַת (in place) הֶ֔בֶל (of Abel), כִּ֥י (for) הֲרָג֖וֹ (killed him) קָֽיִן׃ (Cain).

26 וּלְשֵׁ֤ת (And to Seth), גַּם־ (also) הוּא֙ (to him) יֻלַּד־ (was born) בֵּ֔ן (a son), וַיִּקְרָ֥א (and he called) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) אֱנ֑וֹשׁ (Enosh). אָ֣ז (At that time) הוּחַ֔ל (they began) לִקְרֹ֖א (to call on) בְּשֵׁ֥ם (the name) יְהוָֽה׃פ (of YHWH).
