The Excellence of the Restored Nation

1  וַיְהִ֧י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) אֶֽל־ (to) יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ (Jeremiah) שֵׁנִ֑ית (a second time) וְהוּא֙ (and he) עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ (still) עָצ֔וּר (was shut up) בַּחֲצַ֥ר (in the court) הַמַּטָּרָ֖ה (of the guard), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עֹשָׂ֑הּ (who made it) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) יוֹצֵ֥ר (who formed) אוֹתָ֛הּ (it) לַהֲכִינָ֖הּ (to establish it) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH is) שְׁמֽוֹ׃ (His name); 3  קְרָ֥א (Call) אֵלַ֖י (to Me) וְאֶעֱנֶ֑ךָּ (and I will answer you) וְאַגִּ֧ידָה (and will show) לְּךָ֛ (to you) גְּדֹל֥וֹת (great) וּבְצֻר֖וֹת (and hidden things) לֹ֥א (that you have not) יְדַעְתָּֽם׃ס (known).

4  כִּי֩ (For) כֹ֨ה (thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), עַל־ (concerning) בָּתֵּי֙ (the houses) הָעִ֣יר (city), הַזֹּ֔את (of this) וְעַל־ (and) בָּתֵּ֖י (the houses) מַלְכֵ֣י (of the kings) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), הַנְּתֻצִ֕ים (pulled down) אֶל־ (against) הַסֹּלְל֖וֹת (the siege mounds), וְאֶל־ (and against) הֶחָֽרֶב׃ (the sword); 5  בָּאִ֗ים (they are coming in) לְהִלָּחֵם֙ (to fight) אֶת־ (with) הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים (the Chaldeans), וּלְמַלְאָם֙ (and to fill them) אֶת־ (with) פִּגְרֵ֣י (the carcasses) הָאָדָ֔ם (of the men), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הִכֵּ֥יתִי (I will slay) בְאַפִּ֖י (in My anger) וּבַחֲמָתִ֑י (and in My fury), וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר (and for whom) הִסְתַּ֤רְתִּי (I have hidden) פָנַי֙ (My face) מֵהָעִ֣יר (city). הַזֹּ֔את (From this) עַ֖ל (and over) כָּל־ (all) רָעָתָֽם׃ (their evil).

6  הִנְנִ֧י (Behold, I) מַעֲלֶה־ (will bring) לָּ֛הּ (to it) אֲרֻכָ֥ה (health) וּמַרְפֵּ֖א (and healing), וּרְפָאתִ֑ים (and I will heal them) וְגִלֵּיתִ֣י (and will reveal) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) עֲתֶ֥רֶת (the abundance) שָׁל֖וֹם (of peace) וֶאֱמֶֽת׃ (and truth). 7  וַהֲשִֽׁבֹתִי֙ (And I will cause to return), אֶת־ (-) שְׁב֣וּת (the captivity) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) וְאֵ֖ת (and) שְׁב֣וּת (the captivity) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) וּבְנִתִ֖ים (and I will rebuild them) כְּבָרִֽאשֹׁנָֽה׃ (as at the first). 8  וְטִ֣הַרְתִּ֔ים (And I will cleanse them) מִכָּל־ (from all) עֲוֺנָ֖ם (their iniquity), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (by which) חָֽטְאוּ־ (they have sinned) לִ֑י (against Me) וְסָלַחְתִּ֗י (and I will forgive) לְכוֹל (all) עֲוֺנֽוֹתֵיהֶם֙ (their iniquities) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (by which) חָֽטְאוּ־ (they have sinned), לִ֔י (against Me) וַאֲשֶׁ֖ר (and by which) פָּ֥שְׁעוּ (they have transgressed) בִֽי׃ (against Me).

9  וְהָ֣יְתָה (And it will be) לִּ֗י (for Me) לְשֵׁ֤ם (as a name) שָׂשׂוֹן֙ (of joy), לִתְהִלָּ֣ה (as a praise) וּלְתִפְאֶ֔רֶת (and as an honor) לְכֹ֖ל (before all) גּוֹיֵ֣י (the nations) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) יִשְׁמְע֜וּ (will hear of) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַטּוֹבָ֗ה (the good) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) אָֽנֹכִי֙ (I) עֹשֶׂ֣ה (am doing) אֹתָ֔ם (for them) וּפָחֲד֣וּ (and they will dread) וְרָֽגְז֗וּ (and will tremble) עַ֤ל (over) כָּל־ (all) הַטּוֹבָה֙ (the goodness) וְעַ֣ל (and over) כָּל־ (all) הַשָּׁל֔וֹם (the prosperity) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אָֽנֹכִ֖י (I) עֹ֥שֶׂה (will provide) לָּֽהּ׃ס (for it).

10  כֹּ֣ה׀ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH); עוֹד֮ (Once again) יִשָּׁמַ֣ע (there will be heard) בַּמָּקוֹם־ (place), הַזֶּה֒ (in this) אֲשֶׁר֙ (of which) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) אֹֽמְרִ֔ים (say) חָרֵ֣ב (desolate) ה֔וּא (it is) מֵאֵ֥ין (without) אָדָ֖ם (man) וּמֵאֵ֣ין (and without) בְּהֵמָ֑ה (beast), בְּעָרֵ֤י (in the cities) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah), וּבְחֻצ֣וֹת (and in the streets) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (of Jerusalem), הַֽנְשַׁמּ֗וֹת (that are desolate), מֵאֵ֥ין (without) אָדָ֛ם (man), וּמֵאֵ֥ין (and without) יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (inhabitant), וּמֵאֵ֥ין (and without) בְּהֵמָֽה׃ (beast), 11  ק֣וֹל (the voice) שָׂשׂ֞וֹן (of joy), וְק֣וֹל (and the voice) שִׂמְחָ֗ה (of gladness), ק֣וֹל (the voice) חָתָן֮ (of the bridegroom), וְק֣וֹל (and the voice) כַּלָּה֒ (of the bride), ק֣וֹל (the voice) אֹמְרִ֡ים (of those saying), הוֹדוּ֩ (Praise) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֜וֹת (Hosts),

כִּֽי־ (for) ט֤וֹב (is good); יְהוָה֙ (YHWH)

כִּֽי־ (for) לְעוֹלָ֣ם (forever); חַסְדּ֔וֹ (His loving devotion is)

מְבִאִ֥ים (of those bringing) תּוֹדָ֖ה (thank offerings) בֵּ֣ית (into the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH).

כִּֽי־ (For) אָשִׁ֧יב (I will turn back) אֶת־ (-) שְׁבוּת־ (the captivity) הָאָ֛רֶץ (of the land), כְּבָרִאשֹׁנָ֖ה (as at the first), אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH).

12  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַר֮ (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָאוֹת֒ (Hosts); ע֞וֹד (again) יִֽהְיֶ֣ה׀ (there will be) בַּמָּק֣וֹם (place), הַזֶּ֗ה (in this) הֶחָרֵ֛ב (which is desolate) מֵֽאֵין־ (without) אָדָ֥ם (man) וְעַד־ (and without) בְּהֵמָ֖ה (beast), וּבְכָל־ (and in all) עָרָ֑יו (its cities) נְוֵ֣ה (a dwelling place) רֹעִ֔ים (of shepherds) מַרְבִּצִ֖ים (causing to lie down) צֹֽאן׃ (the flock). 13  בְּעָרֵ֨י (In the cities) הָהָ֜ר (of the hill country), בְּעָרֵ֤י (in the cities) הַשְּׁפֵלָה֙ (of the Shephelah), וּבְעָרֵ֣י (and in the cities) הַנֶּ֔גֶב (of the Negev), וּבְאֶ֧רֶץ (and in the land) בִּנְיָמִ֛ן (of Benjamin), וּבִסְבִיבֵ֥י (and in the places around) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (Jerusalem), וּבְעָרֵ֣י (and in the cities) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), עֹ֣ד (again) תַּעֲבֹ֧רְנָה (will pass) הַצֹּ֛אן (the flock) עַל־ (under) יְדֵ֥י (the hands) מוֹנֶ֖ה (of the one counting) אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH).

The Covenant with David

14  הִנֵּ֛ה (Behold), יָמִ֥ים (the days) בָּאִ֖ים (are coming),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

וַהֲקִֽמֹתִי֙ (when I will establish) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the word) הַטּ֔וֹב (good)

אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) דִּבַּ֛רְתִּי (I have spoken)

אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel)

וְעַל־ (and to) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah).

15  בַּיָּמִ֤ים (Days), הָהֵם֙ (in those) וּבָעֵ֣ת (time), הַהִ֔יא (and at that)

אַצְמִ֥יחַ (I will cause to spring up) לְדָוִ֖ד (for David); צֶ֣מַח (a Branch) צְדָקָ֑ה (of righteousness)

וְעָשָׂ֛ה (and he will do) מִשְׁפָּ֥ט (justice)

וּצְדָקָ֖ה (and righteousness) בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ (in the land).

16  בַּיָּמִ֤ים (Days) הָהֵם֙ (in those) תִּוָּשַׁ֣ע (will be saved), יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah)

וִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (and Jerusalem) תִּשְׁכּ֣וֹן (will dwell) לָבֶ֑טַח (in safety);

וְזֶ֥ה (and this is) אֲשֶׁר־ (is what) יִקְרָא־ (will be called), לָ֖הּ (unto her)

יְהוָ֥ה׀ (YHWH) צִדְקֵֽנוּ׃ס (Tsidqenu).

17  כִּי־ (For) כֹ֖ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH); לֹֽא־ (will never) יִכָּרֵ֣ת (lack) לְדָוִ֔ד (David) אִ֕ישׁ (a man) יֹשֵׁ֖ב (to sit) עַל־ (on) כִּסֵּ֥א (the throne) בֵֽית־ (of the house) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel); 18  וְלַכֹּהֲנִים֙ (will the priests) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites) לֹֽא־ (nor) יִכָּרֵ֥ת (lack) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) מִלְּפָנָ֑י (before me) מַעֲלֶ֨ה (to offer) עוֹלָ֜ה (burnt offerings), וּמַקְטִ֥יר (and to kindle) מִנְחָ֛ה (meat offerings), וְעֹ֥שֶׂה־ (and to do) זֶּ֖בַח (sacrifice) כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִֽים׃ס (the days).

19  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And came) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֶֽל־ (to) יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ (Jeremiah), לֵאמֽוֹר׃ (saying), 20  כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH); אִם־ (if) תָּפֵ֙רוּ֙ (you⁺ can break) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֣י (My covenant) הַיּ֔וֹם (with the day), וְאֶת־256351853.htm" title="Conj-w | DirObjM 853: wə·’eṯ-—Not typically translated; used as a direct object marker"> (and) בְּרִיתִ֖י (My covenant) הַלָּ֑יְלָה (with the night), וּלְבִלְתִּ֛י (and as for there not) הֱי֥וֹת (to be) יֽוֹמָם־ (day) וָלַ֖יְלָה (and night) בְּעִתָּֽם׃ (in their time); 21  גַּם־ (then also) בְּרִיתִ֤י (My covenant) תֻפַר֙ (may be broken) אֶת־ (with) דָּוִ֣ד (David) עַבְדִּ֔י (My servant), מִהְיֽוֹת־ (from there being) ל֥וֹ (unto him) בֵ֖ן (a son) מֹלֵ֣ךְ (reigning) עַל־ (on) כִּסְא֑וֹ (his throne); וְאֶת־ (so with) הַלְוִיִּ֥ם (the Levites) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (the priests), מְשָׁרְתָֽי׃ (those ministering to Me). 22  אֲשֶׁ֤ר (As) לֹֽא־ (can) יִסָּפֵר֙ (not), צְבָ֣א (the host) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens) וְלֹ֥א (and not) יִמַּ֖ד (can be measured), ח֣וֹל (the sand) הַיָּ֑ם (of the sea) כֵּ֣ן (so) אַרְבֶּ֗ה (will I multiply) אֶת־ (-) זֶ֙רַע֙ (the seed) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) עַבְדִּ֔י (My servant), וְאֶת־ (and) הַלְוִיִּ֖ם (the Levites) מְשָׁרְתֵ֥י (ministering) אֹתִֽי׃ס (to Me).

23  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And came) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֶֽל־ (to) יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ (Jeremiah), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 24  הֲל֣וֹא (Not) רָאִ֗יתָ (have you considered) מָֽה־ (what) הָעָ֤ם (people) הַזֶּה֙ (this) דִּבְּר֣וּ (have spoken), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), שְׁתֵּ֣י (The two) הַמִּשְׁפָּח֗וֹת (families) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) בָּחַ֧ר (has chosen), יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בָּהֶ֖ם (them) וַיִּמְאָסֵ֑ם (and He has rejected)? וְאֶת־ (Thus) עַמִּי֙ (My people), יִנְאָצ֔וּן (they have despised) מִֽהְי֥וֹת (from being) ע֖וֹד (anymore) גּ֥וֹי (a nation) לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ס (before them). 25  כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH); אִם־ (if) לֹ֥א (not) בְרִיתִ֖י (My covenant is) יוֹמָ֣ם (with day) וָלָ֑יְלָה (and night), חֻקּ֛וֹת (and if the fixed orders) שָׁמַ֥יִם (of the heavens) וָאָ֖רֶץ (and earth); לֹא־ (not) שָֽׂמְתִּי׃ (I have appointed). 26  גַּם־ (Then) זֶ֣רַע (the seed) יַעֲקוֹב֩ (of Jacob), וְדָוִ֨ד (and David) עַבְדִּ֜י (My servant), אֶמְאַ֗ס (will I refuse) מִקַּ֤חַת (to take) מִזַּרְעוֹ֙ (from his seed) מֹֽשְׁלִ֔ים (to be reigning) אֶל־ (over) זֶ֥רַע (the seed) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (of Abraham), יִשְׂחָ֣ק (Isaac), וְיַעֲקֹ֑ב (and Jacob). כִּֽי־ (For) אָשׁוּב (I will turn back), אֶת־ (-) שְׁבוּתָ֖ם (their captivity) וְרִחַמְתִּֽים׃ס (and I will have mercy on them).
