And I will make My dwelling place among you
This phrase signifies God's promise to reside with His people, reflecting the covenant relationship established with Israel. The concept of God dwelling among His people is central to the tabernacle and later the temple, where God's presence was manifest. This promise is a continuation of the covenantal theme found in Exodus 25:8, where God instructs Moses to build a sanctuary so He may dwell among them. Theologically, this foreshadows the incarnation of Jesus Christ, who is described in John 1:14 as the Word made flesh dwelling among us. The ultimate fulfillment of God's dwelling is seen in Revelation 21:3, where God will dwell with humanity in the new creation.

and My soul will not despise you
This assurance highlights God's acceptance and favor towards His people when they live in obedience to His commandments. In the historical context, this is a reassurance against the backdrop of the covenant curses and blessings outlined in Leviticus 26. The phrase indicates a relational aspect, where God's soul, or His innermost being, finds pleasure in His people. This is contrasted with the times of disobedience when God would turn away from Israel, as seen in passages like Jeremiah 12:7. Theologically, this points to the grace and mercy of God, who desires a relationship with His people. In the New Testament, this is echoed in Ephesians 1:6, where believers are accepted in the Beloved, signifying God's unchanging love and acceptance through Christ.

Teaching Points
God's Desire for Relationship
God’s promise to dwell among His people highlights His desire for an intimate relationship with them. This is a consistent theme throughout Scripture, culminating in the person of Jesus Christ.

Holiness and Obedience
The context of Leviticus 26 emphasizes the importance of holiness and obedience as conditions for God’s presence. Believers are called to live lives that reflect God’s holiness.

The Presence of God
The presence of God is a source of blessing and assurance. In the New Testament, believers have the Holy Spirit dwelling within them, providing guidance and comfort.

Covenant Faithfulness
God’s promise to not despise His people is rooted in His covenant faithfulness. Believers can trust in God’s unchanging nature and His commitment to His promises.

Community and Worship
The communal aspect of God dwelling among His people underscores the importance of corporate worship and community in the life of believers.(11) And I will set my tabernacle among you.--Better, And I will set my dwelling-place among you. (See Leviticus 15:31.) Not only will God bless them with these material blessings, but will permanently abide with them in the sanctuary erected in their midst.

My soul shall not abhor you.--That is, God has no aversion to them; does not regard it below His dignity to sojourn amongst them, and to show them His favour.

Verse 11. - And I will set my tabernacle among you. This was fulfilled, spiritually, as shown to St. John in his vision of the new Jerusalem: "I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God" (Revelation 21:3). And my soul shall not abhor you. The result of God's abhorrence being his rejection of those whom he abhors (see Leviticus 20:23).
