ALEPH. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. | 1 How blessed are those whose life is blameless, who walk in the Law of the LORD! |
Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. | 2How blessed are those who observe his decrees, who seek him with all of their heart, |
They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways. | 3who practice no evil while they walk in his ways. |
Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently. | 4You have commanded concerning your precepts, that they be guarded with diligence. |
O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes! | 5Oh, that my ways were steadfast, so I may keep your statutes. |
Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments. | 6Then I will not be ashamed, since my eyes will be fixed on all of your commands. |
I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments. | 7I will praise you with an upright heart, as I learn your righteous decrees. |
I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly. | 8I will keep your statutes; do not ever abandon me. |
BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. | 9How can a young man keep his behavior pure? By guarding it in accordance with your word. |
With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. | 10I have sought you with all of my heart; do not let me drift away from your commands. |
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. | 11I have stored what you have said in my heart, so I won't sin against you. |
Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. | 12Blessed are you, LORD! Teach me your statutes. |
With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. | 13I have spoken with my lips about all your decrees that you have announced. |
I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. | 14I find joy in the path of your decrees, as if I owned all kinds of riches. |
I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. | 15I will meditate on your precepts, and I will respect your ways. |
I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. | 16I am delighted with your statutes; I will not forget your word. |
GIMEL. Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word. | 17Deal kindly with your servant so I may live and keep your word. |
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. | 18Open my eyes so that I will observe amazing things from your instruction. |
I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me. | 19Since I am a stranger on the earth, do not hide your commands from me. |
My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times. | 20My soul is consumed with longing for your decrees at all times. |
Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments. | 21You rebuke the accursed ones, who wander from your commands. |
Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies. | 22Remove scorn and disrespect from me, for I observe your decrees. |
Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes. | 23Though nobles take their seat and gossip about me, your servant will meditate on your statutes. |
Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellers. | 24I take joy in your decrees, for they are my counselors. |
DALETH. My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word. | 25My soul clings to the dust; revive me according to your word. |
I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes. | 26I have talked about my ways, and you have answered me; Teach me your statutes. |
Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works. | 27Help me understand how your precepts function, and I will meditate on your wondrous acts. |
My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word. | 28I weep because of sorrow; fortify me according to your word. |
Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously. | 29Remove false paths from me; and graciously give me your instruction. |
I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me. | 30I have chosen the faithful way; I have firmly placed your ordinances before me. |
I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O LORD, put me not to shame. | 31I cling to your decrees; LORD, do not put me to shame. |
I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart. | 32I eagerly race along the way of your commands, for you enable me to do so. |
HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. | 33Teach me, LORD, about the way of your statutes, and I will observe them without fail. |
Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. | 34Give me understanding and I will observe your instruction. I will keep it with all of my heart. |
Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight. | 35Help me live my life by your commands, because my joy is in them. |
Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. | 36Turn my heart to your decrees and away from unjust gain. |
Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. | 37Turn my eyes away from gazing at worthless things, and revive me by your ways. |
Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear. | 38Confirm your promise to your servant, which is for those who fear you. |
Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good. | 39Turn away the shame that I dread, because your ordinances are good. |
Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness. | 40Look, I long for your precepts; revive me through your righteousness. |
VAU. Let thy mercies come also unto me, O LORD, even thy salvation, according to thy word. | 41May your gracious love come to me, LORD, your salvation, just as you said. |
So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word. | 42Then I can answer the one who insults me, for I place my trust in your word. |
And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments. | 43Never take your truthful words from me, For I wait for your ordinances. |
So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever. | 44Then I will always keep your Law, forever and ever, |
And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts. | 45I will walk in liberty, for I seek your precepts. |
I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed. | 46Then I will speak of your decrees before kings and not be ashamed. |
And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved. | 47I will take delight in your commands, which I love. |
My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes. | 48I will lift up my hands to your commands, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes. |
ZAIN. Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope. | 49Remember what you said to your servant, by which you caused me to hope. |
This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. | 50This is what comforts me in my troubles: that what you say revives me. |
The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law. | 51Even though the arrogant utterly deride me, I do not turn away from your instruction. |
I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself. | 52I have remembered your ancient ordinances, LORD, and I take comfort in them. |
Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law. | 53I burn with indignation because of the wicked who forsake your instruction. |
Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. | 54Your statutes are my songs, no matter where I make my home. |
I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law. | 55In the night I remember your name, LORD, and keep your instruction. |
This I had, because I kept thy precepts. | 56I have made it my personal responsibility to keep your precepts. |
CHETH. Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words. | 57The LORD is my inheritance; I have given my promise to keep your word. |
I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word. | 58I have sought your favor with all of my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. |
I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. | 59I examined my lifestyle and set my feet in the direction of your decrees. |
I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. | 60I hurried and did not procrastinate to keep your commands. |
The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law. | 61Though the ropes of the wicked have ensnared me, I have not forgotten your instruction. |
At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments. | 62At midnight I will get up to thank you for your righteous ordinances. |
I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts. | 63I am united with all who fear you, and with everyone who keeps your precepts. |
The earth, O LORD, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes. | 64LORD, the earth overflows with your gracious love! Teach me your statutes. |
TETH. Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O LORD, according unto thy word. | 65LORD, you have dealt well with your servant, according to your word. |
Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments. | 66Teach me both knowledge and appropriate discretion, because I believe in your commands. |
Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word. | 67Before I was humbled, I wandered away, but now I observe your words. |
Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes. | 68LORD, you are good , and do what is good; teach me your statutes. |
The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart. | 69The arrogant have accused me falsely; but I will observe your precepts wholeheartedly. |
Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law. | 70Their minds are clogged as with greasy fat, but I find joy in your instruction. |
It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. | 71It was for my good that I was humbled; so that I would learn your statutes. |
The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver. | 72Instruction that comes from you is better for me than thousands of gold and silver coins. |
JOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments. | 73Your hands made and formed me; give me understanding, that I may learn your commands. |
They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word. | 74May those who fear you see me and be glad, for I have hoped in your word. |
I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. | 75I know, LORD, that your decrees are just, and that you have rightfully humbled me. |
Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant. | 76May your gracious love comfort me in accordance with your promise to your servant. |
Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight. | 77May your mercies come to me that I may live, for your instruction is my delight. |
Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts. | 78May the arrogant become ashamed, because they have subverted me with deceit; as for me, I will meditate on your precepts. |
Let those that fear thee turn unto me, and those that have known thy testimonies. | 79May those who fear you turn to me, along with those who know your decrees. |
Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed. | 80May my heart be blameless with respect to your statutes so that I may not become ashamed. |
CAPH. My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word. | 81I long for your deliverance; I have looked to your word, placing my hope in it. |
Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me? | 82My eyes grow weary with respect to what you have promised— I keep asking, "When will you comfort me?" |
For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes. | 83Though I have become like a water skin dried by smoke, I have not forgotten your statutes. |
How many are the days of thy servant? when wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me? | 84How many days must your servant endure this? When will you judge those who persecute me? |
The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law. | 85The arrogant have dug pitfalls for me disobeying your instruction. |
All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; help thou me. | 86All of your commands are reliable. I am persecuted without cause—help me! |
They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts. | 87Though the arrogant nearly destroyed me on earth, I did not abandon your precepts. |
Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth. | 88Revive me according to your gracious love; and I will keep the decrees that you have proclaimed. |
LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. | 89Your word is forever, LORD; it is firmly established in heaven. |
Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. | 90Your faithfulness continues from generation to generation. You established the earth, and it stands firm. |
They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants. | 91To this day they stand by means of your rulings, for all things serve you. |
Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction. | 92Had your instruction not been my pleasure, I would have died in my affliction. |
I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me. | 93I will never forget your precepts, for you have revived me with them. |
I am thine, save me; for I have sought thy precepts. | 94I am yours, so save me, since I have sought your precepts. |
The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies. | 95The wicked lay in wait to destroy me, while I ponder your decrees. |
I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad. | 96I have observed that all things have their limit, but your commandment is very broad. |
MEM. O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. | 97How I love your instruction! Every day it is my meditation. |
Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. | 98Your commands make me wiser than my adversaries, since they are always with me. |
I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. | 99I am more insightful than my teachers, because your decrees are my meditations. |
I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. | 100I have more common sense than the elders, for I observe your precepts. |
I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. | 101I keep away from every evil choice so that I may keep your word. |
I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. | 102I do not avoid your judgments, for you pointed them out to me. |
How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! | 103How pleasing is what you have to say to me— tasting better than honey. |
Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. | 104I obtain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every false way. |
NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. | 105Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my pathway. |
I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments. | 106I have given my word and affirmed it, to keep your righteous judgments. |
I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word. | 107I am severely afflicted. Revive me, LORD, according to your word. |
Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments. | 108LORD, please accept my voluntary offerings of praise, and teach me your judgments. |
My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law. | 109Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I do not forget your instruction. |
The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts. | 110Though the wicked lay a trap for me, I haven't wandered away from your precepts. |
Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. | 111I have inherited your decrees forever, because they are the joy of my heart. |
I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end. | 112As a result, I am determined to carry out your statutes forever. |
SAMECH. I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love. | 113I despise the double-minded, but I love your instruction. |
Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word. | 114You are my fortress and shield; I hope in your word. |
Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God. | 115Leave me, you who practice evil, that I may observe the commands of my God. |
Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope. | 116Sustain me, God, as you have promised, and I will live. Do not let me be ashamed of my hope. |
Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually. | 117Support me, that I may be saved, and I will carry out your statutes consistently. |
Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood. | 118You reject all who wander from your statutes, since their deceitfulness is vain. |
Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies. | 119You remove all the wicked of the earth like dross; therefore I love your decrees. |
My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments. | 120My flesh trembles out of fear of you, and I am in awe of your judgments. |
AIN. I have done judgment and justice: leave me not to mine oppressors. | 121I have acted with justice and righteousness; do not abandon me to my oppressors. |
Be surety for thy servant for good: let not the proud oppress me. | 122Back up your servant in a positive way; do not let the arrogant oppress me. |
Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness. | 123My eyes fail as I look for your salvation and for your righteous promise. |
Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes. | 124Act toward your servant consistent with your gracious love, and teach me your statutes. |
I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies. | 125Since I am your servant, give me understanding, so I will know your decrees. |
It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law. | 126It is time for the LORD to act, since they have violated your instruction. |
Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold. | 127I truly love your commands more than gold, including fine gold. |
Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way. | 128I truly consider all of your precepts—all of them—to be just, while I despise every false way. |
PE. Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them. | 129Your decrees are wonderful— that's why I observe them. |
The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. | 130The disclosure of your words illuminates, providing understanding to the simple. |
I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments. | 131I open my mouth and pant as I long for your commands. |
Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name. | 132Turn in my direction and show mercy to me, as you have decreed regarding those who love your name. |
Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. | 133Direct my footsteps by your promise, and do not let any kind of iniquity rule over me. |
Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts. | 134Deliver me from human oppression and I will keep your precepts. |
Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes. | 135Show favor to your servant, and teach me your statutes. |
Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law. | 136My eyes shed rivers of tears, when others do not obey your instruction. |
TZADDI. Righteous art thou, O LORD, and upright are thy judgments. | 137LORD, you are righteous, and your judgments are right. |
Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful. | 138You have ordered your decrees to us rightly, and they are very faithful. |
My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words. | 139My zeal consumes me because my enemies forget your words. |
Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it. | 140Your word is very pure, and your servant loves it. |
I am small and despised: yet do not I forget thy precepts. | 141Though I may be small and despised, I do not neglect your precepts. |
Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth. | 142Your righteousness is an eternal righteousness, and your instruction is true. |
Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights. | 143Though trouble and anguish overwhelm me, your commands remain my delight. |
The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live. | 144Your righteous decrees are eternal; give me understanding, and I will live. |
KOPH. I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O LORD: I will keep thy statutes. | 145I have cried out with all of my heart. Answer me, LORD! I will observe your statutes. |
I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies. | 146I have called out to you, "Save me, so I may keep your decrees." |
I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word. | 147I get up before dawn and cry for help; I place my hope in your word. |
Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word. | 148I look forward to the night watches, when I may meditate on what you have said. |
Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O LORD, quicken me according to thy judgment. | 149Hear my voice according to your gracious love. LORD, revive me in keeping with your justice. |
They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law. | 150Those who pursue wickedness draw near; they remain far from your instruction. |
Thou art near, O LORD; and all thy commandments are truth. | 151You are near, LORD, and all of your commands are true. |
Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever. | 152I discovered long ago about your decrees that you have confirmed them forever. |
RESH. Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law. | 153Look on my misery, and rescue me, for I do not ignore your instruction. |
Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word. | 154Defend my case and redeem me; revive me according to your promise. |
Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes. | 155Deliverance remains remote from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes. |
Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to thy judgments. | 156Your mercies are magnificent, LORD; revive me according to your judgments. |
Many are my persecutors and mine enemies; yet do I not decline from thy testimonies. | 157Though my persecutors and adversaries are numerous, I do not turn aside from your decrees. |
I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word. | 158I watch the treacherous, and despise them, because they do not do what you have said. |
Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness. | 159Look how I love your precepts, LORD; revive me according to your gracious love. |
Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever. | 160The sum of your word is truth, and each righteous ordinance of yours is everlasting. |
SCHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word. | 161Though nobles persecute me for no reason, my heart stands in awe of your words. |
I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil. | 162I find joy at what you have said like one who has discovered a great treasure. |
I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love. | 163I despise and hate falsehood, but I love your instruction. |
Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments. | 164I praise you seven times a day because of your righteous ordinances. |
Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. | 165Great peace belongs to those who love your instruction, and nothing makes them stumble. |
LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments. | 166I am looking in hope for your deliverance, LORD, as I carry out your commands. |
My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly. | 167My soul treasures your decrees, and I love them deeply. |
I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee. | 168I keep your precepts and your decrees because all of my ways are before you. |
TAU. Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word. | 169May my cry arise before you, LORD; give me understanding according to your word. |
Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word. | 170Let my request come before you; deliver me, as you have promised. |
My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes. | 171May my lips utter praise, for you teach me your statutes. |
My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness. | 172May my tongue sing about your promise, for all of your commands are right. |
Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts. | 173May your hand stand ready to assist me, for I have chosen your precepts. |
I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law is my delight. | 174I am longing for your deliverance, LORD, and your instruction is my joy. |
Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me. | 175Let me live, and I will praise you; let your ordinances help me. |
I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments. | 176I have wandered away like a lost sheep; come find your servant, for I do not forget your commands. |
