1The tribal leaders of the Levites went before Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and the Israelite tribal leaders

1וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֗וּ רָאשֵׁי֙ אֲב֣וֹת הַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֶל־ אֶלְעָזָר֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְאֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ בִּן־ נ֑וּן וְאֶל־ רָאשֵׁ֛י אֲב֥וֹת הַמַּטּ֖וֹת לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

2in Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said, "The LORD told Moses to assign us cities in which to live along with the grazing areas for our cattle."

2וַיְדַבְּר֨וּ אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם בְּשִׁלֹ֗ה בְּאֶ֤רֶץ כְּנַ֙עַן֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יְהוָה֙ צִוָּ֣ה בְיַד־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה לָֽתֶת־ לָ֥נוּ עָרִ֖ים לָשָׁ֑בֶת וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֖ן לִבְהֶמְתֵּֽנוּ׃

3So the Israelites assigned these cities and their grazing areas to the Levites from their own holdings, as the LORD had instructed.

3וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל לַלְוִיִּ֛ם מִנַּחֲלָתָ֖ם אֶל־ פִּ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אֶת־ הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה וְאֶת־ מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃

4The first lot belonged to the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest were allotted thirteen cities from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.

4וַיֵּצֵ֥א הַגּוֹרָ֖ל לְמִשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת הַקְּהָתִ֑י וַיְהִ֡י לִבְנֵי֩ אַהֲרֹ֨ן הַכֹּהֵ֜ן מִן־ הַלְוִיִּ֗ם מִמַּטֵּ֣ה יְ֠הוּדָה וּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה הַשִּׁמְעֹנִ֜י וּמִמַּטֵּ֤ה בִנְיָמִן֙ בַּגּוֹרָ֔ל עָרִ֖ים שְׁלֹ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵֽה׃ ס

5The rest of Kohath's descendants were allotted ten cities from the clans of the tribe of Ephraim, and from the tribe of Dan and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

5וְלִבְנֵ֨י קְהָ֜ת הַנּוֹתָרִ֗ים מִמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת מַטֵּֽה־ אֶ֠פְרַיִם וּֽמִמַּטֵּה־ דָ֞ן וּמֵחֲצִ֨י מַטֵּ֧ה מְנַשֶּׁ֛ה בַּגּוֹרָ֖ל עָרִ֥ים עָֽשֶׂר׃ ס

6Gershon's descendants were allotted thirteen cities from the clans of the tribe of Issachar, and from the tribes of Asher and Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

6וְלִבְנֵ֣י גֵרְשׁ֗וֹן מִמִּשְׁפְּח֣וֹת מַטֵּֽה־ יִשָּׂשכָ֣ר וּמִמַּטֵּֽה־ אָ֠שֵׁר וּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה נַפְתָּלִ֜י וּ֠מֵחֲצִי מַטֵּ֨ה מְנַשֶּׁ֤ה בַבָּשָׁן֙ בַּגּוֹרָ֔ל עָרִ֖ים שְׁלֹ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵֽה׃ ס

7Merari's descendants by their clans were allotted twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

7לִבְנֵ֨י מְרָרִ֜י לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֗ם מִמַּטֵּ֨ה רְאוּבֵ֤ן וּמִמַּטֵּה־ גָד֙ וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה זְבוּלֻ֔ן עָרִ֖ים שְׁתֵּ֥ים עֶשְׂרֵֽה׃

8So the Israelites assigned to the Levites by lot these cities and their grazing areas, as the LORD had instructed Moses.

8וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֶת־ הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה וְאֶת־ מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֑ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה בְּיַד־ מֹשֶׁ֖ה בַּגּוֹרָֽל׃ פ

9They assigned from the tribes of Judah and Simeon the cities listed below.

9וַֽיִּתְּנ֗וּ מִמַּטֵּה֙ בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וּמִמַּטֵּ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י שִׁמְע֑וֹן אֵ֚ת הֶֽעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁר־ יִקְרָ֥א אֶתְהֶ֖ן בְּשֵֽׁם׃

10They were assigned to the Kohathite clans of the Levites who were descendants of Aaron, for the first lot belonged to them.

10וַֽיְהִי֙ לִבְנֵ֣י אַהֲרֹ֔ן מִמִּשְׁפְּח֥וֹת הַקְּהָתִ֖י מִבְּנֵ֣י לֵוִ֑י כִּ֥י לָהֶ֛ם הָיָ֥ה הַגּוֹרָ֖ל רִיאשֹׁנָֽה׃

11They assigned them Kiriath Arba (Arba was the father of Anak), that is, Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, along with its surrounding grazing areas.

11וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ לָהֶ֜ם אֶת־ קִרְיַת֩ אַרְבַּ֨ע אֲבִ֧י הָֽעֲנ֛וֹק הִ֥יא חֶבְר֖וֹן בְּהַ֣ר יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֖הָ סְבִיבֹתֶֽיהָ׃

12(Now the city's fields and surrounding towns they had assigned to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his property.)

12וְאֶת־ שְׂדֵ֥ה הָעִ֖יר וְאֶת־ חֲצֵרֶ֑יהָ נָֽתְנ֛וּ לְכָלֵ֥ב בֶּן־ יְפֻנֶּ֖ה בַּאֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃ ס

13So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they assigned Hebron (a city of refuge for one who committed manslaughter), Libnah,

13וְלִבְנֵ֣י ׀ אַהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֗ן נָֽתְנוּ֙ אֶת־ עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־ חֶבְר֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ וְאֶת־ לִבְנָ֖ה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

14Jattir, Eshtemoa,

14וְאֶת־ יַתִּר֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ אֶשְׁתְּמֹ֖עַ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

15Holon, Debir,

15וְאֶת־ חֹלֹן֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ דְּבִ֖ר וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

16Ain, Juttah, and Beth Shemesh, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of nine cities taken from these two tribes.

16וְאֶת־ עַ֣יִן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֗הָ וְאֶת־ יֻטָּה֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־ בֵּ֥ית שֶׁ֖מֶשׁ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֣ים תֵּ֔שַׁע מֵאֵ֕ת שְׁנֵ֥י הַשְּׁבָטִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ פ

17From the tribe of Benjamin they assigned Gibeon, Geba,

17וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה בִנְיָמִ֔ן אֶת־ גִּבְע֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־ גֶּ֖בַע וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

18Anathoth, and Almon, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of four cities.

18אֶת־ עֲנָתוֹת֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ עַלְמ֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃

19The priests descended from Aaron received thirteen cities and their grazing areas.

19כָּל־ עָרֵ֥י בְנֵֽי־ אַהֲרֹ֖ן הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֑ים שְׁלֹשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה עָרִ֖ים וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃ ס

20The rest of the Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted cities from the tribe of Ephraim.

20וּלְמִשְׁפְּח֤וֹת בְּנֵֽי־ קְהָת֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם הַנּוֹתָרִ֖ים מִבְּנֵ֣י קְהָ֑ת וַֽיְהִי֙ עָרֵ֣י גֽוֹרָלָ֔ם מִמַּטֵּ֖ה אֶפְרָֽיִם׃

21They assigned them Shechem (a city of refuge for one who committed manslaughter) in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer,

21וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ לָהֶ֜ם אֶת־ עִ֨יר מִקְלַ֧ט הָרֹצֵ֛חַ אֶת־ שְׁכֶ֥ם וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֖הָ בְּהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וְאֶת־ גֶּ֖זֶר וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

22Kibzaim, and Beth Horon, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of four cities.

22וְאֶת־ קִבְצַ֙יִם֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ בֵּ֥ית חוֹרֹ֖ן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

23From the tribe of Dan they assigned Eltekeh, Gibbethon,

23וּמִמַּ֨טֵּה־ דָ֔ן אֶֽת־ אֶלְתְּקֵ֖א וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶֽת־ גִּבְּת֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

24Aijalon, and Gath Rimmon, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of four cities.

24אֶת־ אַיָּלוֹן֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־ גַּת־ רִמּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

25From the half-tribe of Manasseh they assigned Taanach and Gath Rimmon, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of two cities.

25וּמִֽמַּחֲצִית֙ מַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה אֶת־ תַּעְנַךְ֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ גַּת־ רִמּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שְׁתָּֽיִם׃

26The rest of the Kohathite clans received ten cities and their grazing areas.

26כָּל־ עָרִ֥ים עֶ֖שֶׂר וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֑ן לְמִשְׁפְּח֥וֹת בְּנֵֽי־ קְהָ֖ת הַנּוֹתָרִֽים׃ ס

27They assigned to the Gershonite clans of the Levites the following cities: from the half-tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan (a city of refuge for one who committed manslaughter) and Beeshtarah, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of two cities;

27וְלִבְנֵ֣י גֵרְשׁוֹן֮ מִמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת הַלְוִיִּם֒ מֵחֲצִ֞י מַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה אֶת־ עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־ [גלון] (גּוֹלָ֤ן) בַּבָּשָׁן֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶֽת־ בְּעֶשְׁתְּרָ֖ה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שְׁתָּֽיִם׃ ס

28from the tribe of Issachar: Kishon, Daberath,

28וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה יִשָּׂשכָ֔ר אֶת־ קִשְׁי֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־ דָּֽבְרַ֖ת וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

29Jarmuth, and En Gannim, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of four cities;

29אֶת־ יַרְמוּת֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־ עֵ֥ין גַּנִּ֖ים וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

30from the tribe of Asher: Mishal, Abdon,

30וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה אָשֵׁ֔ר אֶת־ מִשְׁאָ֖ל וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־ עַבְדּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

31Helkath, and Rehob, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of four cities;

31אֶת־ חֶלְקָת֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ רְחֹ֖ב וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

32from the tribe of Naphtali: Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for one who committed manslaughter), Hammoth Dor, and Kartan, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of three cities.

32וּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה נַפְתָּלִ֜י אֶת־ עִ֣יר ׀ מִקְלַ֣ט הָֽרֹצֵ֗חַ אֶת־ קֶ֨דֶשׁ בַּגָּלִ֤יל וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֙הָ֙ וְאֶת־ חַמֹּ֥ת דֹּאר֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ קַרְתָּ֖ן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שָׁלֹֽשׁ׃

33The Gershonite clans received thirteen cities and their grazing areas.

33כָּל־ עָרֵ֥י הַגֵּרְשֻׁנִּ֖י לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם שְׁלֹשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה עִ֖יר וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃ ס

34They assigned to the Merarite clans (the remaining Levites) the following cities: from the tribe of Zebulun: Jokneam, Kartah,

34וּלְמִשְׁפְּח֣וֹת בְּנֵֽי־ מְרָרִי֮ הַלְוִיִּ֣ם הַנּוֹתָרִים֒ מֵאֵת֙ מַטֵּ֣ה זְבוּלֻ֔ן אֶֽת־ יָקְנְעָ֖ם וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־ קַרְתָּ֖ה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

35Dimnah, and Nahalal, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of four cities;

35אֶת־ דִּמְנָה֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶֽת־ נַהֲלָ֖ל וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃

36from the tribe of Reuben: Bezer, Jahaz,

36וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה רְאוּבֵ֔ן אֶת־ בֶּ֖צֶר וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ וְאֶת־ יַ֖הְצָה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

37Kedemoth, and Mephaath, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of four cities;

37אֶת־ קְדֵמוֹת֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ מֵיפָ֖עַת וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

38from the tribe of Gad: Ramoth in Gilead (a city of refuge for one who committed manslaughter), Mahanaim,

38וּמִמַּטֵּה־ גָ֗ד אֶת־ עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־ רָמֹ֥ת בַּגִּלְעָ֖ד וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ וְאֶֽת־ מַחֲנַ֖יִם וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

39Heshbon, and Jazer, along with the grazing areas of each--a total of four cities.

39אֶת־ חֶשְׁבּוֹן֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־ יַעְזֵ֖ר וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ כָּל־ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃

40The Merarite clans (the remaining Levites) were allotted twelve cities.

40כָּל־ הֶ֨עָרִ֜ים לִבְנֵ֤י מְרָרִי֙ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔ם הַנּוֹתָרִ֖ים מִמִּשְׁפְּח֣וֹת הַלְוִיִּ֑ם וַיְהִי֙ גּוֹרָלָ֔ם עָרִ֖ים שְׁתֵּ֥ים עֶשְׂרֵֽה׃

41The Levites received within the land owned by the Israelites forty-eight cities in all and their grazing areas.

41כֹּ֚ל עָרֵ֣י הַלְוִיִּ֔ם בְּת֖וֹךְ אֲחֻזַּ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עָרִ֛ים אַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃

42Each of these cities had grazing areas around it; they were alike in this regard.

42תִּֽהְיֶ֙ינָה֙ הֶעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה עִ֣יר עִ֔יר וּמִגְרָשֶׁ֖יהָ סְבִיבֹתֶ֑יהָ כֵּ֖ן לְכָל־ הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ ס

43So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had solemnly promised to their ancestors, and they conquered it and lived in it.

43וַיִּתֵּ֤ן יְהוָה֙ לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־ כָּל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לָתֵ֣ת לַאֲבוֹתָ֑ם וַיִּרָשׁ֖וּהָ וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ בָֽהּ׃

44The LORD made them secure, in fulfillment of all he had solemnly promised their ancestors. None of their enemies could resist them.

44וַיָּ֨נַח יְהוָ֤ה לָהֶם֙ מִסָּבִ֔יב כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לַאֲבוֹתָ֑ם וְלֹא־ עָ֨מַד אִ֤ישׁ בִּפְנֵיהֶם֙ מִכָּל־ אֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֚ת כָּל־ אֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם נָתַ֥ן יְהוָ֖ה בְּיָדָֽם׃

45Not one of the LORD's faithful promises to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled; every one was realized.

45לֹֽא־ נָפַ֣ל דָּבָ֔ר מִכֹּל֙ הַדָּבָ֣ר הַטּ֔וֹב אֲשֶׁר־ דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הַכֹּ֖ל בָּֽא׃ פ
