But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.
They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus.3They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes.4While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.
The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive?5So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground." Why are you looking for the living among the dead?" asked the men. "
He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee,6He is not here, but He has been resurrected! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,
that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.”7saying, The Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day?"
Then they remembered that he had said this.8And they remembered His words.
So they rushed back from the tomb to tell his eleven disciples—and everyone else—what had happened.9Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest.
It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and several other women who told the apostles what had happened.10Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things.
But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it.11But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.
However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then he went home again, wondering what had happened. The Walk to Emmaus12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went home, amazed at what had happened.
That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem.13Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.
As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened.14Together they were discussing everything that had taken place.
As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them.15And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus Himself came near and began to walk along with them.
But God kept them from recognizing him.16But they were prevented from recognizing Him.
He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stopped short, sadness written across their faces.17Then He asked them, "What is this dispute that you're having with each other as you are walking?" And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.
Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.”18The one named Cleopas answered Him, "Are You the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that happened there in these days?"
“What things?” Jesus asked. “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people.19"What things?" He asked them. So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a Prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,
But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him.20and how our chief priests and leaders handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him.
We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago.21But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it's the third day since these things happened.
“Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report.22Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb,
They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive!23and when they didn't find His body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.
Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.”24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn't see Him."
Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures.25He said to them, "How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken!
Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?”26Didn't the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into His glory?"
Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.27Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on,28They came near the village where they were going, and He gave the impression that He was going farther.
but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them.29But they urged Him: "Stay with us, because it's almost evening, and now the day is almost over." So He went in to stay with them.
As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them.30It was as He reclined at the table with them that He took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared!31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him, but He disappeared from their sight.
They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”32So they said to each other, "Weren't our hearts ablaze within us while He was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?"
And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with them,33That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and those with them gathered together,
who said, “The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter. ” Jesus Appears to the Disciples34who said, "The Lord has certainly been raised, and has appeared to Simon!"
Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread.35Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said.36And as they were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them, "Peace to you!"
But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost!37But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.
“Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt?38"Why are you troubled?" He asked them. "And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.”39Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself! Touch Me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have."
As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet.40Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet.
Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”41But while they still were amazed and unbelieving because of their joy, He asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
They gave him a piece of broiled fish,42So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish,
and he ate it as they watched.43and He took it and ate in their presence.
Then he said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.”44Then He told them, "These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you--that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled."
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day.46He also said to them, "This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,
It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’47and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of all these things.48You are witnesses of these things.
“And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” The Ascension49And look, I am sending you what My Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high."
Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them.50Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands He blessed them.
While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.51And while He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.
So they worshiped him and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy.52After worshiping Him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
And they spent all of their time in the Temple, praising God.53And they were continually in the temple complex praising God.
