Daniel Removed to Babylon

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah,

Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, had reversed many of his father’s reforms and led Judah in continued rebellion against the Lord. Around 605 BC, Babylon’s victory over Egypt at Carchemish established Nebuchadnezzar’s dominance in the region and brought Judah under Babylonian control.

Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon

Nebuchadnezzar II ruled Babylon during the height of its imperial power. He became God’s appointed instrument of judgment against Judah because of the nation’s persistent idolatry, injustice, and refusal to heed the prophets.

came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

Jerusalem’s submission marked the beginning of Babylon’s domination of Judah and the first deportation of Judean captives, including Daniel and other young men from noble families. The captivity would unfold through later invasions and culminate in Jerusalem’s destruction, fulfilling God’s warnings to Judah.

and to Azariah, Abednego.

Azariah (“Yahweh has helped”) was given the name Abednego, thought to mean “servant of Nego” or “servant of Nebo,” another Babylonian god. The four young men were being prepared to serve a pagan empire, yet the events that follow show that Babylon could change their names without gaining their allegiance.

Daniel’s Faithfulness

But Daniel made up his mind

Though taken from Jerusalem and trained for service in Babylon, Daniel determined to remain faithful to the God of Israel. His loyalty did not depend on his surroundings or position.

that he would not defile himself

God’s dietary laws marked Israel as a holy people set apart from the nations. Daniel would not compromise the obedience required of him, even under pressure from a foreign court.

The royal provisions may have included foods forbidden under the Law or food connected with Babylonian idolatry. Accepting them could have signaled participation in practices contrary to worship of the Lord.
