Berean Study Bible The Creation“In the beginning” marks the start of time, the universe, and God’s work of creation. Before all things, God existed eternally. Jhn 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God… God In Genesis 1:1, God is presented as the sovereign Creator, distinct from everything He made and possessing complete authority over it. Deu 4:35 You were shown these things so that you would know… created “Created” describes God’s direct act of bringing all things into existence by His power. Col 1:16-17 For in Him all things were created, things in heaven… the heavens and the earth. “The heavens and the earth” encompasses the whole created order: the skies, celestial bodies, land, seas, and all that fills them. Genesis opens by establishing God as the source and ruler of all reality. Neh 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens,… Now the earth was formless and void, The newly created earth had not yet been shaped, ordered, or prepared for life. It lay unformed and empty, awaiting God’s work of separating, arranging, and filling it with life. Jer 4:23 I looked at the earth, and it was formless and void;… and darkness was over the surface of the deep. Darkness covered the vast waters that surrounded the unformed earth. The scene was not evil or outside God’s control, but incomplete, awaiting the light and order God would soon establish. Job 26:10 He has inscribed a horizon on the face of the waters… And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. God’s Spirit was present and active over the waters, ready to carry out God’s purpose. Creation began under God’s direct authority, with the Spirit preparing the world for the life and order that would follow. Deu 32:11 As an eagle stirs up its nest and hovers over its young,…
The First DayGod created by His authoritative word, revealing His sovereignty over all that exists. Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made… “Let there be light,” Light was the first element brought into the dark, unformed world, establishing order and beginning the cycle of day and night. 2Co 4:6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”… and there was light. God’s command was fulfilled immediately. The light existed before the creation of the sun, moon, and stars, showing that creation depended on God alone. Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded… And God saw that the light was good, God declared the light good because it fulfilled His purpose in bringing order to the world He had made. Light dispelled the darkness that covered the deep and established the first pattern of God’s ordered creation. Its goodness reflects God’s own righteous character and begins the repeated affirmation that all He made was good. Jhn 1:4-5 In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.… and He separated the light from the darkness. God established a real distinction between light and darkness, setting the order of day and night. This separation marked the beginning of the rhythms that would govern life on earth. It also provides an enduring picture of God’s rule over creation: He brings order where there was disorder and distinguishes what belongs to light from what belongs to darkness. 2Co 4:6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”… God called the light “day,” God named the light, exercising His authority over what He had made and establishing the daily cycle that would govern life on earth. Light marked the period of activity and visibility within the ordered world God was forming. Psa 74:16 The day is Yours, and also the night; You established… and the darkness He called “night.” Darkness was not outside God’s rule or opposed to His creative purpose. By assigning it its place, God established the rhythm of day and night and brought order to the darkness that covered the earth. Psa 104:20 You bring darkness, and it becomes night… And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. The first day consisted of an evening and a morning, establishing the pattern followed throughout the creation week. God’s work proceeded in an orderly sequence, preparing the world for the life He would create. Exo 16:8 And Moses added, “The LORD will give you meat to eat…
The Second DayGod’s command brings the next stage of creation into being, displaying His sovereign authority over all that exists. Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made… “Let there be an expanse God formed the expanse, or sky, as part of the ordered structure of the world. Job 37:18 can you, like Him, spread out the skies,… between the waters, The waters that covered the earth were divided, restraining what had been unformed and preparing the world for life. Psa 148:4 Praise Him, O highest heavens, and you waters… to separate the waters from the waters.” Waters remained below the expanse as seas and above it as the source of rain. God established boundaries within creation, demonstrating His rule over the elements and setting the earth in order for the days that followed. Psa 136:6 He spread out the earth upon the waters.… So God made the expanse God formed the sky as a real boundary within the created world, bringing structure to the waters that had covered the earth. His work established order where there had been no distinction. Isa 45:12 It is I who made the earth and created man… and separated the waters beneath it from the waters above. The waters below were gathered into the seas, while waters above the expanse remained under God’s control. He set limits within creation, preparing the world for the life that would follow. Psa 148:4 Praise Him, O highest heavens, and you waters… And it was so. God’s command was carried out exactly as He spoke. Creation responds fully to His will, and nothing can hinder His purpose. Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded… God called the expanse “sky.” By naming the expanse, God established it as part of His ordered creation. The sky separated the waters above from the waters below, forming the world’s atmosphere and preparing the earth for the life God would soon create. Job 37:18 can you, like Him, spread out the skies,… And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. The second day closed with the same ordered cycle that marked the days of creation. God’s work unfolded according to His purpose, as the newly formed sky prepared the earth for the separation of land and seas on the following day. Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth…
The Third DayGod continued to bring the world into order by His command, the divine fiat by which His will was enacted through His speech, directing the work of creation according to His purpose. Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made… “Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place, The waters covering the earth were gathered into seas, establishing their boundaries and preparing the surface of the earth for life. Job 38:8-11 Who enclosed the sea behind doors when it burst forth… so that the dry land may appear.” Dry land emerged at God’s command, providing the place where vegetation, animals, and mankind would later live and multiply, foreshadowing life emerging from the waters and salvation. Psa 95:5 The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed… And it was so. God’s word accomplished exactly what He commanded. Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded… God called the dry land “earth,” God established the land as a distinct realm within His ordered creation. By naming it, He declared His rightful rule over it and prepared a place where plants, animals, and mankind would live. Psa 95:5 The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed… and the gathering of waters He called “seas.” The waters, once covering the earth, were gathered into their appointed boundaries. What could appear uncontrolled and threatening was subject to God’s command, demonstrating that every part of creation remains under His authority. Psa 33:7 He piles up the waters of the sea; He puts the depths… And God saw that it was good. The land and seas were complete and suited to the purposes God intended. Creation was orderly, fruitful, and free from corruption before sin entered the world. 1Ti 4:4 For every creation of God is good, and nothing… Then God said, God created by sovereign command, bringing order and life into the world without struggle or delay. Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made… “Let the earth bring forth vegetation: On the third day, dry land became productive, prepared to support the creatures and people yet to be made. Job 38:27 to satisfy the parched wasteland…… seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, Plants and trees were created with the capacity to reproduce, providing an ongoing supply of food and sustaining life on the earth. Lev 26:4 I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit… each bearing fruit with seed according to its kind.” Each kind was formed to reproduce within the boundaries God established, preserving the order and diversity of creation. Gen 8:19 Every living creature, every creeping thing, and every bird—… And it was so. God’s command was fulfilled exactly as spoken, confirming His complete authority over all He made. Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded… The earth produced vegetation: At God’s command, the earth brought forth plant life, marking the ordered beginning of a world prepared to sustain living creatures. Vegetation appeared before humanity, displaying God’s provision and the established order of creation. Psa 104:14 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops… seed-bearing plants according to their kinds Plants were created with the ability to reproduce, each within the boundaries God ordained. Their continued growth and multiplication preserved the distinct order of the created world. 1Co 15:38 But God gives it a body as He has designed,… and trees bearing fruit with seed according to their kinds. Fruit-bearing trees provided both food and seed for future generations. Their abundance anticipated the provision of nourishment for people and animals, while their reproduction maintained the order established at creation. Mat 7:17-20 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit,… And God saw that it was good. God declared this work good because it fulfilled His purpose. The vegetation, plants, and trees were complete, orderly, and suited to the world He was forming. 1Ti 4:4 For every creation of God is good, and nothing… And there was evening, and there was morning— Evening and morning complete a literal day, following the biblical pattern of days beginning at sunset. The repeated order marks God’s work as deliberate, ordered, and complete. Dan 8:14 He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings;… the third day. God formed dry land from the gathered waters, naming the land Earth and the waters Seas. He also created seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, providing the means by which life would be sustained. Life emerging from the earth on the third day anticipates the later biblical theme of resurrection. Exo 19:11 and be prepared by the third day, for on the third day…
The Fourth DayGod creates by His sovereign command, showing that the ordered universe exists by His will and authority. Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded… “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky On the fourth day, God made the sun, moon, and stars and set them above the earth. They are created lights, not gods or independent powers. Psa 136:7-9 He made the great lights—His loving devotion… to distinguish between the day and the night, Their regular course separates day from night and establishes a dependable pattern for life on earth. Psa 74:16-17 The day is Yours, and also the night; You established… and let them be signs They provide visible markers in the heavens, revealing the order God established in creation. Luk 21:25 There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars… to mark the seasons and days and years. Their movements enable people to reckon time, recognize seasons, work the land, and observe appointed times. Psa 104:19-20 He made the moon to mark the seasons… And let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky God appointed the sun, moon, and stars as created lights within the sky, distinct from the false gods associated with heavenly bodies in surrounding nations. They remain under His authority and serve the order He established. Jer 31:35 Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day… to shine upon the earth.” Their light provides for the earth’s daily rhythm, marking day and night and sustaining the conditions necessary for life. The heavenly lights were given a practical purpose within God’s ordered creation. Psa 19:4-6 their voice has gone out into all the earth,… And it was so. God’s command was accomplished exactly as He spoke, displaying His sovereign power and the certainty of His word. Psa 148:5 Let them praise the name of the LORD, for He gave… God made two great lights: On the fourth day, God created the sun and moon as distinct parts of His ordered creation, not as deities to be worshiped. Their design displays His authority over the heavens and the rhythms of life on earth. Psa 104:19 He made the moon to mark the seasons… the greater light to rule the day The sun provides daylight and warmth, sustaining the world God made. Its regular course establishes the pattern of day and work. Psa 136:8 the sun to rule the day, His loving devotion… and the lesser light to rule the night. The moon governs the night by reflecting light and helps mark months and seasons. Its cycles would later shape Israel’s calendar and the timing of appointed feasts. Psa 136:9 the moon and stars to govern the night.… And He made the stars as well. God also made the innumerable stars, setting them in the heavens as part of the ordered universe. Their vast number reveals the scope of His creation. Psa 147:4 He determines the number of the stars;… God set these lights God deliberately placed the sun, moon, and stars in their appointed positions, establishing His authority over the heavens. They are created bodies, not deities, and serve the purposes He assigned. Psa 136:7-9 He made the great lights—His loving devotion… in the expanse of the sky The lights were set in the heavens above the earth, within the expanse God made to divide the waters. Their ordered placement displays the structure God established in creation. Psa 19:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare…… to shine upon the earth, The celestial lights provide illumination for the earth and govern the rhythm of day and night, seasons, and years. Their light testifies to God’s continuing provision for the world He made. Job 38:12-14 In your days, have you commanded the morning… to preside over the day and the night, God appointed the sun and moon to govern the regular pattern of day and night. Unlike the surrounding nations that worshiped celestial bodies as gods, Scripture presents them as created lights under God’s command. Their ordered movement displays His rule over time and creation. Psa 136:8-9 the sun to rule the day, His loving devotion… and to separate the light from the darkness. The heavenly lights marked the boundaries God established between day and night, continuing the order introduced at the beginning of creation. Light and darkness remained distinct according to God’s design, providing the rhythm by which life on earth would function. Isa 45:7 I form the light and create the darkness;… And God saw that it was good. The sun, moon, and stars fulfilled the purpose for which God made them. Their goodness reflects the order, beauty, and usefulness of creation before sin brought disorder into the world. Psa 33:5 The LORD loves righteousness and justice;… And there was evening, and there was morning— The fourth day ended in the same ordered pattern as the days before it, marking a complete day under God’s command. Evening followed by morning reflects the biblical reckoning of a day from sunset to sunset. Exo 27:21 In the Tent of Meeting, outside the veil… the fourth day. God had appointed the sun, moon, and stars to govern day and night and to mark days, seasons, and years. The heavenly bodies serve creation by measuring time while remaining subject to their Creator. Psa 104:19 He made the moon to mark the seasons…
The Fifth DayGod created by His sovereign command, bringing life and order according to His purpose. Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made… “Let the waters teem with living creatures, The seas were filled with abundant living creatures, each according to its kind, displaying the fullness and variety God intended for the waters. Psa 104:25 Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures… and let birds fly above the earth Birds were made to inhabit the skies above the land, completing the living order of the sea and sky. Psa 8:8 the birds of the air and the fish of the sea,… in the open expanse of the sky.” The birds flew beneath the expanse, or firmament, God had established, within the ordered world He formed and sustained. Job 37:18 can you, like Him, spread out the skies,… So God created the great sea creatures God made even the largest and most formidable creatures of the sea. Cultures surrounding Israel often viewed sea monsters as powers of chaos, but Genesis presents them as creatures under God’s authority. Psa 74:13-14 You divided the sea by Your strength;… and every living thing that moves, with which the waters teemed according to their kinds, The waters were filled with abundant and varied life, each creature reproducing within its appointed kind. The sea was not uncontrolled or empty but ordered by God’s design. Psa 104:25-26 Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures… and every winged bird after its kind. God also populated the skies with birds, each according to its kind. Sea and sky were now filled with living creatures suited to the realms God had prepared. Gen 7:14 they and every kind of wild animal, livestock, … And God saw that it was good. God declared this work good, complete, and fitting for its purpose. Creation reflected the goodness and wisdom of its Maker. 1Ti 4:4 For every creation of God is good, and nothing… Then God blessed them God bestowed His favor on the creatures He had made, granting them the capacity to live, reproduce, and flourish within the order He established. Gen 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,… and said, “Be fruitful and multiply He commanded the fish and birds to increase according to their kinds, ensuring that the waters and skies would remain full of life. Gen 9:7 But as for you, be fruitful and multiply;… and fill the waters of the seas, The seas, though vast and deep, were placed under God’s rule and appointed as a habitat rich with living creatures. Psa 104:25-26 Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures… and let birds multiply on the earth.” Birds were to spread throughout the land and sky, contributing to the fullness and balance of the created world. Gen 8:17 Bring out all the living creatures with you—birds… And there was evening, and there was morning— The fifth day ended as the preceding days had ended, marked by evening and morning. The repeated pattern presents creation as a sequence of ordinary days under God’s ordered rule. Dan 8:14 He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings;… the fifth day. God had filled the waters with living creatures and the skies with birds, blessing them to multiply in their appointed realms. The earth was now prepared for the further creation of land animals and mankind on the sixth day. Psa 148:7 Praise the LORD from the earth, all great sea creatures…
The Sixth DayGod creates by His authoritative command, bringing His purposes into effect without resistance or delay. Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made… “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: On the sixth day, God commands the land to produce animal life in an ordered abundance. Living creatures appear according to the boundaries God established for each kind. Gen 6:20 Two of every kind of bird and animal and… livestock, Domesticated animals include creatures such as cattle, sheep, and goats, which would later serve important roles in human labor, food, clothing, and sacrifice. Gen 2:20 The man gave names to all the livestock,… land crawlers, Small animals that move close to the ground, including reptiles and other creeping creatures, are included within God’s complete provision for the earth. Lev 11:41-42 Every creature that moves along the ground is detestable;… and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” Wild animals fill the lands alongside domesticated animals, displaying the variety, strength, and balance built into creation. Each kind exists according to God’s design. Gen 7:14-15 they and every kind of wild animal, livestock, … And it was so. God’s command is fulfilled exactly as He decreed, confirming the certainty and order of His work. Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded… God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, God created the wild land animals as distinct groups, each ordered to reproduce within its kind. Their variety and stability display His purposeful design over the earth. Gen 7:14 they and every kind of wild animal, livestock, … the livestock according to their kinds, Domestic animals were also created in their proper kinds, prepared for the role they would later have in human life through food, clothing, labor, and sacrifice. Deu 14:4 These are the animals that you may eat: The ox, the sheep… and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. Small animals and creeping creatures were not excluded from God’s work. Each was made according to its kind, contributing to the completeness and order of the living world. Lev 11:41-42 Every creature that moves along the ground is detestable;… And God saw that it was good. God declared the land animals good because they were exactly as He intended: living, fruitful, ordered, and fitted to their place in creation. 1Ti 4:4 For every creation of God is good, and nothing… Then God said, God creates by His authoritative word, bringing His purpose to pass by decree. Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made… “Let Us make man in Our image, The plural language reflects the fullness of God’s own being, later revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Humanity alone is made to bear God’s image and to represent Him within creation. Gen 3:22 Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become… after Our likeness, Men and women resemble God in moral awareness, reason, creativity, relational capacity, and accountability before Him. Their dignity rests on this divine design. Gen 5:3 When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son… to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, God assigns humanity authority over the living world, not as license for abuse but as responsibility to govern creation under His authority. Psa 8:6-8 You made him ruler of the works of Your hands;… over the livestock, Domesticated animals are included within this care, reflecting their importance in human life and labor. Gen 9:2-3 The fear and dread of you will fall on every creature… and over all the earth itself Human stewardship extends beyond animals to the land, its resources, and its ordered use. Psa 115:16 The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth… and every creature that crawls upon it.” The command encompasses all earthly creatures, establishing mankind as God’s appointed ruler over creation. Psa 104:24-25 How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom… So God created man in His own image; Humanity alone was created to reflect God’s character and rule within the created order. Men and women possess inherent dignity, moral responsibility, reason, and the capacity to know and obey their Creator. As God’s image-bearers, they were appointed to exercise wise stewardship over the earth. Gen 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam.… in the image of God He created him; The repeated declaration emphasizes that the image of God belongs to all humanity, not merely to a privileged class or nation; the singular “him” represents humanity as a whole. Every person therefore has God-given worth and stands accountable to Him. Though sin has corrupted human nature, God’s purpose for humanity remains unchanged. Jas 3:9 With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father,… male and female He created them. Both man and woman were created by God, equally bearing His image while being distinct in sex and designed for one another in marriage, family, and shared dominion. Their creation establishes the order and complementarity developed in the account that follows. Mat 19:4 Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning… God blessed them and said to them, God bestowed favor upon the man and woman and gave them a rightful place within His created order. His direct address established their responsibility before Him and their authority under Him. Gen 5:2 Male and female He created them, and He blessed them.… “Be fruitful and multiply, Human life, marriage, and family were part of God’s good design from the beginning. Adam and Eve were to bear children and establish generations of people made in God’s image. Gen 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,… and fill the earth and subdue it; Humanity was to spread throughout the world, cultivate its resources, and bring its untamed places under wise and orderly care. The earth was given for responsible stewardship, not destruction. Gen 9:7 But as for you, be fruitful and multiply;… rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.” God placed the animal kingdom under human dominion. This authority was delegated by the Creator and was to be exercised with the care, order, and accountability fitting for those who bear His image. Psa 8:6-8 You made him ruler of the works of Your hands;… Then God said, God completes His provision for mankind by assigning food within the created order through His authoritative word. Human life depends on His provision, not on self-sufficiency. Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded… “Behold, I have given you The gift comes directly from God, who grants humanity the resources needed to live and exercise responsible dominion over the earth. Psa 115:16 The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth… every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, Plants were created to reproduce abundantly and supply food throughout the world. Psa 104:14 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops… and every tree whose fruit contains seed. Fruit-bearing trees provided both immediate nourishment and an ongoing harvest. Gen 2:9 Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree… They will be yours for food. Humanity’s original food was drawn from the vegetation God had made, showing an ordered relationship between people and the rest of creation before sin brought death and disorder. Gen 9:3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you;… And to every beast of the earth God provided food for land animals, both wild and domesticated, under humanity’s appointed stewardship. Psa 147:9 He provides food for the animals, and for the young… and every bird of the air The birds, though living in a different realm of creation, were included in the same abundant provision. Mat 6:26 Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap… and every creature that crawls upon the earth— Even the smallest creatures were not overlooked. God’s care extended throughout the animal world. Gen 7:23 And every living thing on the face of the earth… everything that has the breath of life in it— Every living land creature received life from God and depended upon His provision. Gen 7:22 Of all that was on dry land, everything that had… I have given every green plant for food.” At creation, plants were appointed as food for animals and mankind. The world God made was ordered without the violence of predation. Gen 9:3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you;… And it was so. God’s command was fully accomplished, establishing the provision and order He intended for His creation. Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded… And God looked upon all that He had made, God surveyed the whole of His completed work, from the heavens and earth to the living creatures and mankind. Nothing lay outside His wisdom, power, or purpose. Psa 104:31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; … and indeed, it was very good. Creation stood complete, orderly, fruitful, and free from sin, death, and corruption. Humanity, made in God’s image and appointed to rule the earth under Him, belonged within this good order. 1Ti 4:4 For every creation of God is good, and nothing… And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. The sixth day ended as the preceding days had ended, marking a full day in God’s ordered work of creation. With mankind created and given dominion over the earth, all was prepared for the seventh-day rest. Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
