Berean Study Bible A Warning to the Rich“Come now” is a solemn summons that introduces a direct warning. Jas 4:13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow… you who are rich, The phrase “you who are rich” addresses people whose wealth has fostered self-reliance, injustice, or indifference toward God and others. Luk 6:24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received…… weep and wail The rich are called to mourn deeply in view of God’s approaching judgment. Jol 1:5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep; wail, all you drinkers… over the misery to come upon you. Their riches cannot shield them from the consequences of sin or from God’s final accountability. Pro 1:26-27 in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer… Your riches have rotted Wealth stored as grain, produce, and other goods could quickly decay, exposing the insecurity of possessions accumulated for selfish gain. Mat 6:19-20 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… and moths have eaten your clothes. Expensive garments marked status and prosperity, yet even these prized belongings were vulnerable to ruin. Their destruction reveals that earthly wealth cannot endure or protect those who trust in it. Job 13:28 So man wastes away like something rotten… Your gold and silver are corroded. Gold and silver represented lasting security in the ancient world, yet the wealth the rich trusted has become worthless before God’s judgment. Their accumulated riches expose the emptiness of placing confidence in possessions rather than in God. Mat 6:19-20 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… Their corrosion will testify against you The ruined wealth stands as evidence of greed, neglect, and unjust gain. What was withheld from those in need and stored for personal security becomes a witness against its owners before God. Hab 2:9-11 Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,… and consume your flesh like fire. God’s judgment will be as destructive as fire, reaching beyond possessions to the persons who lived for them. Wealth gained or kept at the expense of righteousness brings ruin rather than protection. Psa 21:9-10 You will place them in a fiery furnace… You have hoarded treasure in the last days. The rich had piled up resources while living in the period leading toward God’s final judgment. Instead of recognizing the urgency of the times, they treated earthly wealth as their lasting hope. Luk 12:16-21 Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man… Look, James directs attention to a grave injustice. Gen 18:20-21 Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah… the wages you withheld from the workmen Landowners were required to pay laborers promptly, since many depended on each day’s earnings for food and necessities. Lev 19:13 You must not defraud your neighbor or rob him.… who mowed your fields Seasonal harvesters performed essential work that increased the owner’s wealth while remaining vulnerable to exploitation. Rut 2:4-7 Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem… are crying out against you. The unpaid wages stand as evidence before God of deliberate wrongdoing. Gen 4:10 “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out… The cries of the harvesters The oppressed workers appeal for justice because they have no power to compel wealthy employers to pay them. Mat 20:1-15 For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner… have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. God, the sovereign ruler over all powers, hears their complaint and will judge those who enrich themselves through oppression. Exo 22:23-24 If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to Me in distress… You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. James condemns the wealthy who used their resources for personal pleasure while ignoring the suffering and needs around them. Their ease had produced moral indifference, and their pursuit of comfort displaced concern for justice, mercy, and obedience to God. Earthly wealth, though temporary, had become the center of their lives. Luk 16:19-25 Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen,… You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter. Like animals prepared for slaughter, they had continued to indulge themselves without recognizing that God’s judgment was near. Their hearts had grown insensitive through continual excess and unrepentant sin. Rather than preparing to answer before God, they had stored up judgment against themselves. Deu 32:15-20 But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked—becoming fat… You have condemned and murdered the righteous, James indicts wealthy oppressors for using their power to secure unjust judgments against innocent people. Their greed had not only deprived the poor of wages and security but had brought ruin and death upon those unable to defend themselves. The righteous are those treated unjustly, including believers whose obedience to God placed them at odds with corrupt authorities and influential landowners. Psa 94:21 They band together against the righteous… who did not resist you. The victims lacked the means to challenge those who controlled the courts and resources. Rather than answering injustice with violence, they endured suffering while entrusting their cause to God, who sees every act of oppression and will judge it rightly. Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open…
Patience in SufferingBelievers are called to endure present hardship with confidence in Christ’s promised return. Their shared identity as brothers reflects a familial bond and the unity of the church, which was to sustain one another while waiting for God’s purposes to unfold. The certainty of the Lord’s coming gave the early Christians reason to remain faithful rather than seek immediate relief or revenge. 1Th 4:15-17 By the word of the Lord, we declare to you… See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil— A farmer works diligently to prepare and plant the field, yet cannot force the harvest to arrive. He depends upon conditions God alone provides. In the same way, believers are to continue faithfully in their responsibilities while entrusting the outcome and timing to God. 2Ti 2:6 The hardworking farmer should be the first… how patient he is for the fall and spring rains. In Israel, the early rains came in autumn and prepared the hardened ground for sowing, while the latter rains in spring helped bring the grain to maturity before harvest. The farmer’s willingness to wait through the full growing season illustrates steady confidence in God’s provision and the coming fulfillment of His promises. Jer 5:24 They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD… You, too, be patient James calls believers to endure suffering without abandoning faith or taking matters into their own hands. Like farmers awaiting the harvest, they were to remain steady through hardship and trust God’s timing. Heb 10:36 You need to persevere, so that after you have done… and strengthen your hearts, Their inner resolve needed to be firmly established so that oppression, delay, and uncertainty would not lead them to discouragement, resentment, or compromise. 2Th 2:17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you… because the Lord’s coming is near. Christ’s return would bring righteous judgment, vindication for His people, and the fulfillment of God’s promises. Its nearness called the churches to faithful endurance and holy conduct. Mat 24:33 So also, when you see all these things, you will know… Do not complain about one another, brothers, Believers are members of one household in Christ and must not turn hardship, delay, or personal frustration into criticism of one another. James wrote to Christians enduring trials, where resentment could quickly damage fellowship and weaken their witness. Php 2:14-15 Do everything without complaining or arguing,… so that you will not be judged. Those who condemn fellow believers invite God’s judgment upon themselves. God sees motives and actions fully, and His people are accountable for how they treat one another. Mat 7:1-2 “Do not judge, or you will be judged.… Look, the Judge is standing at the door! Christ’s return and judgment are near. His presence calls believers to patience, unity, and faithful conduct as they await the day when He will judge every person righteously. Mat 24:33 So also, when you see all these things, you will know… Brothers, James addresses fellow believers as members of God’s family, joined by a common faith and responsibility toward one another. Heb 3:1 Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling… as an example of patience in affliction, Those facing hardship are directed to consider faithful endurance rather than resentment or despair. Rom 12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction… take the prophets Israel’s prophets often suffered rejection, threats, imprisonment, and isolation because they remained faithful to God’s calling. Jeremiah endured opposition in Jerusalem, and Elijah fled from Ahab and Jezebel after confronting idolatry. Mat 5:12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward… who spoke in the name of the Lord. Their message came with God’s authority, and their suffering resulted from declaring His word to an unfaithful people. Jer 26:16 Then the officials and all the people told the priests… See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. Those who remain faithful under suffering are rightly regarded as blessed—happy or fortunate in spiritual well-being—because endurance proves genuine faith and leads to spiritual maturity. The early Christians knew persecution, poverty, and opposition, making steadfastness a necessary part of faithful discipleship. Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial… You have heard of Job’s perseverance Job endured the loss of his possessions, children, health, and reputation without abandoning the Lord. Though he wrestled deeply with his suffering, he did not renounce God. His life stands as a lasting example of faith maintained through severe and undeserved affliction. Job 2:9-10 Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still retain… and have seen the outcome from the Lord. God eventually restored Job and blessed the latter part of his life, showing that his suffering had not escaped God’s notice or control. The Lord’s purposes may remain hidden during trial, but He deals faithfully with those who trust Him. Job 42:10-17 After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored… The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. Job’s restoration revealed the Lord’s tender care toward His servant. God is not indifferent to the suffering of His people; His judgments and dealings are governed by compassion, mercy, and perfect righteousness. Exo 34:6 Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out:… Above all, my brothers, James gives urgent attention to a matter of daily conduct among believers, addressing them as members of God’s household. 1Pe 4:8 Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers… do not swear, They were not to strengthen their words with solemn vows, as though ordinary truthfulness required added guarantees. Mat 5:33 Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients,… not by heaven or earth or by any other oath. Whether invoking God’s realm, the created world, or any other authority, such oaths often concealed unreliable speech or attempted to avoid direct accountability. Mat 5:34-36 But I tell you not to swear at all: either by heaven… Simply let your “Yes” be yes, and your “No,” no, Christians are to speak plainly and truthfully, so that their words can be trusted without elaborate assurances. Mat 5:37 Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’… so that you will not fall under judgment. God holds people accountable for careless, deceptive, and manipulative speech. Mat 12:36-37 But I tell you that men will give an account…
The Prayer of FaithBelievers are not exempt from hardship. James writes to Christians facing trials, including persecution, poverty, illness, and personal distress. The Greek word for suffering implies enduring hardship. Suffering tests faith and calls for steadfast dependence on God. Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”… He should pray. The afflicted believer is to bring his need directly to God, seeking mercy, wisdom, strength, and deliverance. Prayer acknowledges that God rules over every circumstance and hears His people in trouble. Luk 18:1 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray… Is anyone cheerful? Christian life also includes seasons of peace, gratitude, and gladness. Such joy rests not merely on favorable circumstances but on God’s goodness and the hope believers possess in Christ. Pro 15:13 A joyful heart makes a cheerful countenance,… He should sing praises. Joy is rightly expressed in worship. Singing directs gratitude to God, declares His faithfulness, and strengthens the faith of the gathered church. Eph 5:19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns… Is any one of you sick? Physical illness was a real burden in the early Christian community. Believers were not expected to suffer in isolation but were to seek the care and support of the church. Mat 9:12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy… He should call the elders of the church Elders were recognized spiritual leaders responsible for shepherding, teaching, and caring for the congregation. The sick believer was to take the initiative in requesting their help. Act 20:17 From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders… to pray over him The elders were to intercede for the afflicted person, bringing the need before God with confidence in His power and submission to His will. Act 28:8-9 The father of Publius was sick in bed… and anoint him with oil Oil was commonly used for physical care and also served as a visible expression of setting the sick person before God for mercy and healing. Mrk 6:13 They also drove out many demons and healed many of the sick… in the name of the Lord. The elders acted under Christ’s authority, acknowledging that healing comes from the Lord and belongs to His purpose and power. Act 3:6 Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you:… And the prayer offered in faith The elders’ prayer is marked by confident trust in God’s power and submission to His will. In the gathered church, the sick believer is not left alone but is cared for through prayer, anointing, and the ministry of spiritual leaders. Mrk 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer,… will restore the one who is sick. God is able to bring real physical healing and strength to the afflicted. His care extends to the whole person; “restore” can also mean “save” or “make whole,” indicating holistic healing. Healing may serve as a visible testimony to His mercy and authority. Mat 8:16-17 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed… The Lord will raise him up. The Lord may restore the sick person from illness, yet the words also rest on the sure hope of resurrection. Believers belong to the risen Christ, whose victory over death guarantees their final restoration. Jhn 5:21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,… If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Illness is not always caused by personal sin, but sin must be dealt with honestly before God. Where sin is present and confessed, the Lord grants forgiveness, bringing spiritual cleansing alongside the church’s care for physical need. Mrk 2:5 When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic,… Therefore confess your sins to each other Believers are called to deal honestly with sin rather than conceal it. Such confession fosters accountability, reconciliation, and restored fellowship within the church. It is not a demand for public disclosure of every private failure, but for humble openness where sin has affected others and where trusted fellow believers can offer help and correction. Mat 5:23-24 So if you are offering your gift at the altar… and pray for each other Mutual prayer joins the congregation in bearing one another’s burdens before God. Those who know of a brother’s or sister’s need are to seek God’s mercy, strength, and restoration on that person’s behalf. 1Ti 2:1 First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers… so that you may be healed. God may grant physical healing in response to prayer, but confession and intercession also bring spiritual healing by addressing sin, guilt, and broken relationships. Healing comes from God and is connected to repentance, faith, and His sovereign will. Psa 103:3 He who forgives all your iniquities and heals… The prayer of a righteous man The righteous person is one who lives in faith, obedience, and dependence on God, not one who claims sinlessness or earns God’s favor by personal merit. 1Pe 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous… has great power to prevail. God works through the earnest prayers of His people, accomplishing His purposes and showing His faithfulness in response to those who seek Him. 1Ki 18:36-38 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah… Elijah was a man just like us. Though Elijah confronted kings, called down fire, and witnessed extraordinary acts of God, he remained human, subject to fear, exhaustion, and discouragement. After fleeing Jezebel’s threats, he despaired in the wilderness and needed God’s care and direction. His effectiveness did not rest on unusual human strength but on the Lord who answered him. 1Ki 19:4-5 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness.… He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, Elijah sought God in agreement with the judgment God had declared against Israel’s idolatry under Ahab and Jezebel. The drought exposed the helplessness of Baal, whom the Canaanites believed controlled rain and fertility, and showed that the God of Israel alone ruled creation. 1Ki 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers… and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. The long drought brought severe hardship upon the land and demonstrated the seriousness of Israel’s rebellion. When the people turned from Baal after the contest on Mount Carmel, Elijah again prayed, and God sent rain, showing both His authority in judgment and His mercy toward a repentant people. Luk 4:25 But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows… Again he prayed, Elijah sought the Lord after the confrontation on Mount Carmel, continuing in prayer until the promised rain appeared. After three and a half years of drought brought upon Israel for its idolatry, his prayer demonstrated dependence on God and confidence in His word. 1Ki 18:42-43 So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah climbed… and the heavens gave rain, God ended the drought with a heavy rain, displaying His authority over the land, the weather, and the false gods Israel had followed. The rain confirmed that the Lord had heard Elijah and had turned again in mercy toward His people. 1Ki 18:44-45 On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud”… and the earth yielded its crops. The restored rainfall renewed the land and enabled Israel’s fields to produce again. What had been barren under judgment became fruitful through God’s provision, showing that the nation’s welfare rested in His hand. Psa 67:6 The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.
Restoring a SinnerBelievers are addressed as members of one spiritual family, bound together by faith in Christ and accountable for one another’s care. 1Th 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, to admonish the unruly… if one of you should wander from the truth A professing believer may gradually depart from the apostolic gospel and fall into error or sin. Such wandering is serious because truth is not merely personal opinion but the revealed message of Christ. 2Ti 2:18 They say that the resurrection has already occurred… and someone should bring him back, The faithful are to seek the restoration of those who stray, confronting error with gentleness and aiming at repentance, reconciliation, and renewed obedience. Ezk 34:16 I will seek the lost, bring back the strays… consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way A believer who helps bring a fellow Christian back from persistent sin serves God’s purpose of correction and restoration within the church. Ezk 33:9 But if you warn the wicked man to turn from his way… will save his soul from death The sinner is rescued from the deadly course of sin and its judgment by being brought to repentance and renewed obedience to God. Ezk 18:27 But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness… and cover over a multitude of sins. God forgives the sins of the repentant sinner. The one who restores him does not earn forgiveness, but participates in the work of reconciliation by leading him back to the truth. 1Pe 4:8 Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
