The Wedding at Cana

On the third day

The account moves to the third day after Jesus’ journey into Galilee and His calling of Philip and Nathanael.

When the wine ran out,

Jewish wedding celebrations often continued for several days, and the host was expected to provide adequately for the guests. A shortage of wine would bring public embarrassment and reflect poorly on the family. The need reveals the limits of human provision and prepares for Jesus’ first sign.

His mother said to the servants,

A wedding feast could last several days, and a shortage of wine would bring shame upon the host family. Mary placed the need before Jesus and then directed the servants to await His instruction. Her response shows confidence that He would act according to His wisdom.

Now six stone water jars had been set there

The jars stood ready for the customary washings required at a Jewish wedding. Stone vessels were valued because they were not readily subject to ceremonial defilement as earthenware could be. Their presence places Jesus’ first public sign within the ordinary religious life of Galilee.

The master of the banquet supervised the wedding feast and judged the quality of what was served. Bringing the wine to him allowed the miracle to be recognized publicly without Jesus calling attention to Himself.

The master of the banquet supervised the wedding feast and was responsible for the quality and order of the provisions. When he tasted the wine, he encountered the completed result of Jesus’ miracle: real water had become real wine. The abundance and quality of the wine displayed Jesus’ authority over creation and brought unexpected provision to the celebration.

Since the bridegroom was responsible for supplying the feast, the master of the banquet spoke to him privately about the unexpected wine. The bridegroom received credit for a provision he had not made, while Jesus’ work remained largely concealed.

When the Jewish Passover was near,

Israel’s annual feast commemorated the Lord’s deliverance from Egypt through the blood of the Passover lamb and the exodus from slavery. Families gathered to remember God’s covenant faithfulness, eat unleavened bread, and offer the required sacrifices. Its themes of deliverance, sacrifice, and redemption point forward to Christ’s death during Passover as the true Lamb whose blood secures salvation.

Col 2:9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity…

After He was raised from the dead,

After He was raised from the dead, Jesus’ disciples remembered His words and understood that His resurrection confirmed His authority over death, fulfilled His predictions, and revealed Him as the true dwelling place of God among His people.

Mat 28:6 He is not here; He has risen, just as He said!…
Luk 24:6-7 He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you…
Act 2:24 But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him…

His disciples remembered that He had said this.

Before the resurrection, they did not understand that Jesus was speaking of His body rather than the temple building. His death and bodily resurrection brought His earlier words into clear focus.

Luk 24:8 Then they remembered His words.
Jhn 12:16 At first His disciples did not understand these things…
Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send…

Then they believed the Scripture

The disciples recognized that Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection occurred according to God’s revealed plan and fulfilled the Scriptures concerning the Messiah.

1Co 15:3-4 For what I received I passed on to you: that Christ died…
Act 2:31-32 Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection…
Luk 24:44-46 Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you…

and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus’ resurrection proved the truth of His testimony and led the disciples to trust His words with a fuller understanding of His identity and mission.

Jhn 10:17-18 The reason the Father loves Me is that I lay down My life…
Mat 16:21 From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples…
Mrk 8:31 Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man…

While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast,

Jerusalem was crowded with worshipers who had come to celebrate Israel’s deliverance from Egypt. In this setting, Jesus openly began to display the authority of the Messiah before people from many parts of the land.

Jhn 11:55 Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many people…
Luk 2:41-43 Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast…
Jhn 12:12 The next day the great crowd heard that Jesus was coming…

many people saw the signs He was doing

Jesus’ miracles, or “signs,” demonstrated God’s power at work through Him. His works were not performed merely to attract attention, but to reveal His identity and confirm the truth of His mission.

Jhn 4:45 Yet when He arrived, the Galileans welcomed Him.…
Jhn 6:2 A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs…
Jhn 7:31 Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him…

and believed in His name.

Many responded by recognizing Jesus as the promised Messiah and placing faith in Him. Yet their response was often based on what they had seen, and Jesus knew whether such belief came from genuine trust or temporary excitement.

Jhn 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed…
1Jn 5:13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name…
Jhn 20:31 But these are written so that you may believe…

But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them,

Though many in Jerusalem believed because of His signs during Passover, their response was often temporary and based on what they saw rather than a settled faith in who He was. Jesus did not place Himself under the control or expectations of the crowds. He knew that public enthusiasm could quickly turn to confusion, opposition, or rejection.

Psa 118:8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD…
Jer 17:5 This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the man who trusts…
Jhn 1:11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

for He knew them all.

Jesus saw the hearts and motives of every person around Him. No outward profession, excitement over miracles, or appearance of devotion concealed the true condition of the human heart from Him. His complete knowledge revealed His divine identity and guided His ministry according to the Father’s purpose rather than popular approval.

Jhn 21:17 Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John…”…
Jhn 6:64 However, there are some of you who do not believe.”…
Mat 9:4 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said,…

He did not need any testimony about man,

Jesus required no human report to discern the character of those around Him. After cleansing the temple, He saw beyond public displays of belief and recognized whether faith was genuine or superficial. His knowledge confirmed His authority as the Son of God, who sees people as they truly are.

Jhn 5:34 Even though I do not accept human testimony,…
Jhn 21:17 Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John…”…
1Ki 8:39 For You alone know the hearts of all men—…

for He knew what was in a man.

Jesus perceived the hidden thoughts, motives, and spiritual condition of every person. He was not limited to outward actions or appearances. This knowledge prepared the way for His encounters with Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, and others whose deepest needs He understood before they spoke.

Psa 94:11 The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile.
Mrk 2:8 At once Jesus knew in His spirit that they were thinking…
Luk 5:22 Knowing what they were thinking, Jesus replied,…
