In the narrative of Gideon, found in the Book of Judges, God is depicted as the Preserver of Israel during a time of severe oppression by the Midianites. This period is marked by Israel's repeated cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance, showcasing God's enduring mercy and faithfulness to His covenant people.

Context and Background

The account of Gideon is set during the time of the Judges, a tumultuous period in Israel's history characterized by a lack of centralized leadership and frequent apostasy. The Israelites had once again turned away from God, leading to their subjugation by the Midianites. The Midianites, along with the Amalekites and other eastern peoples, would invade Israel, destroying crops and livestock, leaving the Israelites impoverished and desperate (Judges 6:1-6).

Divine Intervention and Call of Gideon

In response to Israel's cries for help, God, in His role as Preserver, intervenes by raising up Gideon as a deliverer. The Angel of the LORD appears to Gideon while he is secretly threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites. The Angel addresses him with the words, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior" (Judges 6:12). Despite Gideon's initial doubts and feelings of inadequacy, God reassures him, saying, "Surely I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites as one man" (Judges 6:16).

The Reduction of Gideon's Army

God's preservation of Israel is further demonstrated through the miraculous reduction of Gideon's army. Initially, Gideon gathers 32,000 men to fight against the Midianites, but God instructs him to reduce the number to prevent Israel from boasting that their own strength saved them. Through a series of tests, God reduces the army to a mere 300 men (Judges 7:2-7). This act underscores God's power and the principle that deliverance comes not by human might but by divine intervention.

Victory Over the Midianites

With only 300 men, Gideon executes a divinely inspired strategy involving trumpets, jars, and torches. The Israelites surround the Midianite camp at night, and at Gideon's signal, they blow the trumpets, break the jars, and hold up the torches, creating chaos and confusion among the Midianites. The LORD causes the Midianites to turn on each other with their swords, leading to a decisive victory for Israel (Judges 7:19-22).

God's Role as Preserver

Throughout the account of Gideon, God's role as Preserver is evident. He not only delivers Israel from the physical threat of the Midianites but also seeks to restore their spiritual fidelity. By choosing an unlikely hero and employing unconventional means, God demonstrates His sovereignty and the importance of faith and obedience. The account of Gideon serves as a powerful reminder of God's ability to preserve His people against overwhelming odds, emphasizing His desire for their reliance on Him rather than on their own strength or numbers.

Judges 8:1-23
And the men of Ephraim said to him, Why have you served us thus, that you called us not, when you went to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.
