The prophetic scriptures of the Old Testament contain numerous references to the Messiah, many of which foretell the rejection and hatred He would face from His own people, the Jews. These prophecies find their fulfillment in the New Testament accounts of Jesus Christ's life and ministry.
Prophetic Scriptures1.
Psalm 69:4 · "Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those who would destroy me, my enemies for no reason. Though I did not steal, I must repay." This psalm, attributed to David, is often seen as a messianic prophecy, foreshadowing the unjust hatred and opposition the Messiah would endure.
2.
Isaiah 53:3 · "He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not." Isaiah's prophecy vividly describes the suffering servant, who would be rejected by His own people.
3.
Psalm 118:22 · "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." This verse is interpreted as a prophecy of the Messiah being rejected by the leaders of Israel, yet ultimately becoming the foundation of God's redemptive plan.
Fulfillment in the New Testament1.
John 1:11 · "He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him." The Apostle John succinctly captures the fulfillment of the prophecies concerning the rejection of Christ by the Jewish people. Despite being the long-awaited Messiah, Jesus was not accepted by the majority of His own nation.
2.
John 15:24-25 · "If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen and hated both Me and My Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated Me without reason.’" Jesus Himself references the fulfillment of the prophecy from
Psalm 69:4, acknowledging the baseless hatred He faced.
3.
Matthew 21:42 · "Jesus said to them, 'Have you never read in the Scriptures: "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes"?'” Here, Jesus directly applies
Psalm 118:22 to Himself, indicating that the religious leaders' rejection of Him was a fulfillment of prophecy.
4.
Acts 4:11 · "This Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’" Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, reiterates the fulfillment of the prophecy in
Psalm 118:22, emphasizing that Jesus, though rejected by the Jewish leaders, is central to God's plan of salvation.
5.
Romans 9:31-33 · "But Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the ‘stumbling stone.’ As it is written: 'See, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.'" Paul explains that Israel's rejection of Christ was a stumbling over the very cornerstone God had established, fulfilling the prophetic word.
The rejection of Jesus by the Jewish people, as foretold in the Old Testament, is a significant aspect of the messianic prophecies. These prophecies and their fulfillment underscore the divine orchestration of redemption through Christ, despite the initial rejection by His own nation.
