The prophetic scriptures of the Old Testament contain numerous references to the Messiah, many of which were fulfilled in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Among these prophecies is the foretelling of the Messiah being mocked, a theme that is poignantly fulfilled in the New Testament accounts of Jesus' passion.
Old Testament Prophecies1.
Psalm 22:7-8: This psalm, often regarded as a messianic prophecy, vividly describes the suffering and mockery that the Messiah would endure. The psalmist writes, "All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads: 'He trusts in the LORD, let the LORD deliver him; let the LORD rescue him, since He delights in him.'" This passage foreshadows the ridicule Jesus faced during His crucifixion, as onlookers derided His trust in God.
2.
Isaiah 50:6: The prophet Isaiah speaks of the suffering servant, saying, "I offered My back to those who beat Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard; I did not hide My face from scorn and spitting." This prophecy highlights the humiliation and mockery that the servant of the Lord would willingly endure, a clear reference to the treatment Jesus received at the hands of His persecutors.
New Testament Fulfillment1.
Matthew 27:27-31: The Gospel of Matthew records the fulfillment of these prophecies in the events leading up to the crucifixion. The Roman soldiers mocked Jesus, dressing Him in a scarlet robe, placing a crown of thorns on His head, and kneeling before Him in false homage, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" (
Matthew 27:29). They spat on Him and struck Him, fulfilling the prophetic imagery of scorn and abuse.
2.
Mark 15:29-32: Mark's Gospel also recounts the mockery Jesus faced while on the cross. Passersby hurled insults, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself by coming down from the cross!" (
Mark 15:29-30). The chief priests and scribes joined in, mocking Him among themselves and challenging Him to come down from the cross to prove His divine sonship.
3.
Luke 23:35-37: Luke provides additional details of the mockery, noting that even the rulers sneered at Jesus, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One" (
Luke 23:35). The soldiers also mocked Him, offering Him sour wine and taunting Him to save Himself if He was indeed the King of the Jews.
4.
John 19:1-3: The Gospel of John emphasizes the physical and verbal abuse Jesus suffered. Pilate's soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns, placed it on His head, and clothed Him in a purple robe. They repeatedly came up to Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck Him in the face (
John 19:2-3).
The mockery of Christ, as prophesied in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament, underscores the depth of His suffering and the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan through the Messiah. These prophetic fulfillments serve as a testament to the accuracy and divine inspiration of the Scriptures, revealing the foreordained path of the Savior who endured scorn and ridicule for the salvation of humanity.
