The death of Jesus Christ is a central event in Christian theology, fulfilling numerous Old Testament prophecies and serving as the cornerstone of the New Testament narrative. These prophecies, written centuries before Christ's crucifixion, are seen as divine foretellings of the Messiah's sacrificial death for the redemption of humanity.

1. The Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53)

Isaiah 53 is one of the most profound prophetic passages concerning the death of Christ. This chapter describes a "suffering servant" who bears the sins of many. Isaiah 53:5 states, "But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed." This prophecy is interpreted as a direct reference to the crucifixion, where Jesus was physically pierced and suffered for the sins of humanity.

2. The Betrayal and Price of Betrayal (Zechariah 11:12-13)

Zechariah 11:12-13 foretells the betrayal of Christ for thirty pieces of silver. The passage reads, "I told them, 'If it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.' So they weighed out my wages—thirty pieces of silver. And the LORD said to me, 'Throw it to the potter'—this magnificent price at which they valued Me!" This prophecy is fulfilled in the New Testament when Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16), and the money is later used to buy the potter's field (Matthew 27:9-10).

3. The Manner of Death (Psalm 22)

Psalm 22 is often cited as a prophetic description of the crucifixion. The psalm begins with the words, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1), which Jesus quotes on the cross (Matthew 27:46). The psalm further describes the physical agony and public humiliation of the sufferer, including the piercing of hands and feet (Psalm 22:16) and the casting of lots for clothing (Psalm 22:18), both of which are fulfilled in the Gospel accounts of Jesus' crucifixion (John 19:23-24).

4. The Passover Lamb (Exodus 12, Isaiah 53:7)

The Passover lamb, as described in Exodus 12, is a foreshadowing of Christ's sacrificial death. The lamb was to be without blemish, and its blood was to be a sign of protection. In Isaiah 53:7 , it is written, "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; He was led like a lamb to the slaughter." This imagery is fulfilled in the New Testament, where Christ is referred to as the "Lamb of God" (John 1:29) and is crucified during the Passover festival, symbolizing His role as the ultimate sacrificial lamb.

5. The Piercing and Mourning (Zechariah 12:10)

Zechariah 12:10 prophesies the piercing of the Messiah and the subsequent mourning: "Then I will pour out on the house of David and on the residents of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on Me, the One they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child." This prophecy is fulfilled in the crucifixion, where Jesus' side is pierced (John 19:34), and it anticipates the future recognition and mourning by Israel.

6. The Timing of His Death (Daniel 9:24-26)

Daniel 9:24-26 provides a prophetic timeline known as the "Seventy Weeks" prophecy, which many scholars interpret as predicting the exact timing of the Messiah's death. The prophecy speaks of an "Anointed One" who will be "cut off" after a specified period. This is seen as a reference to the crucifixion of Christ, aligning with historical events and the timeline of Jesus' ministry.

These prophecies collectively underscore the divine orchestration and foreknowledge of Christ's sacrificial death, affirming its significance in the redemptive plan as revealed in the Scriptures.
