The prophetic scriptures of the Old Testament contain numerous references to the Messiah, many of which were fulfilled in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Among these prophecies is the prediction that the Messiah would be mocked and scorned by those around Him. This aspect of Christ's suffering is poignantly depicted in the Gospels, where the fulfillment of these prophecies is recorded with striking detail.
Old Testament Prophecies1.
Psalm 22:7-8: "All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads: 'He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD deliver him; let the LORD rescue him, since He delights in him.'" This psalm, attributed to David, vividly portrays the suffering of the righteous one who is mocked by onlookers. The language used here is prophetic, pointing to the experiences of the Messiah.
2.
Isaiah 50:6: "I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting." The prophet Isaiah speaks of the Servant of the Lord who willingly endures humiliation and scorn, a clear foreshadowing of the treatment Jesus would receive.
New Testament Fulfillment1.
Matthew 27:29-31: "And they twisted together a crown of thorns, set it on His head, and put a staff in His right hand. And they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly. After they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him." This passage describes the Roman soldiers' mockery of Jesus, fulfilling the prophecies of His being scorned and ridiculed.
2.
Mark 15:29-32: "Those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, 'Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself by coming down from the cross!' In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, 'He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.' And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him." The mockery from various groups, including passersby and religious leaders, echoes the derision foretold in the Psalms.
3.
Luke 23:11: "And Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked Him. Dressing Him in a fine robe, they sent Him back to Pilate." This account of Herod's treatment of Jesus further illustrates the fulfillment of the prophecies concerning the Messiah's humiliation.
4.
John 19:2-3: "The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and dressed Him in a purple robe. And they went up to Him again and again, saying, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' And they slapped Him in the face." The Gospel of John corroborates the other accounts, emphasizing the soldiers' mockery as a fulfillment of the prophetic word.
The fulfillment of these prophecies in the New Testament underscores the suffering and humiliation that Jesus endured as part of His redemptive mission. The mockery He faced was not only a fulfillment of ancient prophecies but also a testament to His willingness to bear the scorn and shame for the sake of humanity's salvation.
