Twelve Captains for Twelve Months

1  וּבְנֵ֣י (And these are the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל׀ (of Israel) לְֽמִסְפָּרָ֡ם (according to their number), רָאשֵׁ֣י (heads) הָאָב֣וֹת (of the fathers) וְשָׂרֵ֣י (and the captains) הָֽאֲלָפִ֣ים׀ (of the thousands) וְהַמֵּא֡וֹת (and of the hundreds), וְשֹׁטְרֵיהֶם֩ (and their officers) הַמְשָׁרְתִ֨ים (who served) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) לְכֹ֣ל׀ (in every) דְּבַ֣ר (matter) הַֽמַּחְלְק֗וֹת (of the divisions) הַבָּאָ֤ה (who came in) וְהַיֹּצֵאת֙ (and went out) חֹ֣דֶשׁ (month) בְּחֹ֔דֶשׁ (by month) לְכֹ֖ל (throughout all) חָדְשֵׁ֣י (the months) הַשָּׁנָ֑ה (of the year)— הַֽמַּחֲלֹ֙קֶת֙ (a division being) הָֽאַחַ֔ת (one) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

2  עַ֞ל (Over) הַמַּחֲלֹ֤קֶת (the division) הָרִֽאשׁוֹנָה֙ (first) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (for the month) הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן (first) יָֽשָׁבְעָ֖ם (was Jashobeam) בֶּן־ (son) זַבְדִּיאֵ֑ל (of Zabdiel)— וְעַל֙ (and in) מַֽחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ (thousand)— 3  מִן־ (-) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) פֶ֗רֶץ (of Perez), הָרֹ֛אשׁ (the chief) לְכָל־ (of all) שָׂרֵ֥י (the captains) הַצְּבָא֖וֹת (of the army) לַחֹ֥דֶשׁ (for the month) הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃ (first).

4  וְעַ֞ל (And over) מַחֲלֹ֣קֶת׀ (the division) הַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) הַשֵּׁנִ֗י (second) דּוֹדַ֤י (was Dodai) הָאֲחוֹחִי֙ (the Ahohite), וּמַ֣חֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (and his division), וּמִקְל֖וֹת (and Mikloth was) הַנָּגִ֑יד (the leader), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

5  שַׂ֣ר (The captain) הַצָּבָ֤א (of the army) הַשְּׁלִישִׁי֙ (third) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (for the month) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י (third) בְּנָיָ֧הוּ (was Benaiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֛ע (of Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest), רֹ֑אשׁ (chief), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ (thousand). 6  ה֧וּא (This) בְנָיָ֛הוּ (Benaiah) גִּבּ֥וֹר (was mighty) הַשְּׁלֹשִׁ֖ים (among the Thirty), וְעַל־ (and over) הַשְּׁלֹשִׁ֑ים (the thirty), וּמַ֣חֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (and over his division) עַמִּיזָבָ֖ד (was Ammizabad) בְּנֽוֹ׃ס (his son).

7  הָֽרְבִיעִ֞י (The fourth), לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (for the) הָרְבִיעִ֗י (fourth), עֲשָׂה־ (was Asah-) אֵל֙ (el) אֲחִ֣י (the brother) יוֹאָ֔ב (of Joab), וּזְבַדְיָ֥ה (and Zebadiah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) אַחֲרָ֑יו (after him), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

8  הַחַמִישִׁי֙ (The fifth) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (for the month) הַחֲמִישִׁ֔י (fifth) הַשַּׂ֖ר (was the captain) שַׁמְה֣וּת (Shamhuth) הַיִּזְרָ֑ח (the Izrahite), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

9  הַשִּׁשִּׁי֙ (The sixth) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (for the month) הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י (sixth) עִירָ֥א (was Ira) בֶן־ (son) עִקֵּ֖שׁ (of Ikkesh) הַתְּקוֹעִ֑י (the Tekoite), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

10  הַשְּׁבִיעִי֙ (The seventh) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (for the month) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י (seventh) חֶ֥לֶץ (was Helez) הַפְּלוֹנִ֖י (the Pelonite), מִן־ (of) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (of Ephraim), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

11  הַשְּׁמִינִי֙ (The eighth) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (for the month) הַשְּׁמִינִ֔י (eighth) סִבְּכַ֥י (was Sibbechai) הַחֻשָׁתִ֖י (the Hushathite), לַזַּרְחִ֑י (of the Zerahites), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

12  הַתְּשִׁיעִי֙ (The ninth) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (for the month) הַתְּשִׁיעִ֔י (ninth) אֲבִיעֶ֥זֶר (was Abiezer) הָעַנְּתֹתִ֖י (the Anathothite), לַבֶּנְיְמִינִי (of the Benjaminite), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

13  הָעֲשִׂירִי֙ (The tenth) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (for the month) הָעֲשִׂירִ֔י (tenth) מַהְרַ֥י (was Maharai) הַנְּטֽוֹפָתִ֖י (the Netophathite), לַזַּרְחִ֑י (of the Zerahite), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַֽחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

14  עַשְׁתֵּֽי־ (The one) עָשָׂר֙ (and tenth) לְעַשְׁתֵּ֣י־ (for one) עָשָׂ֣ר (and tenth) הַחֹ֔דֶשׁ (the month) בְּנָיָ֥ה (was Benaiah) הַפִּרְעָתוֹנִ֖י (the Pirathonite), מִן־ (of) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (of Ephraim), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃ס (thousand).

15  הַשְּׁנֵ֤ים (The two) עָשָׂר֙ (and tenth) לִשְׁנֵ֣ים (for two) עָשָׂ֣ר (and tenth) הַחֹ֔דֶשׁ (the month) חֶלְדַּ֥י (was Heldai) הַנְּטוֹפָתִ֖י (the Netophathite), לְעָתְנִיאֵ֑ל (of Othniel), וְעַל֙ (and in) מַחֲלֻקְתּ֔וֹ (his division) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה (and four) אָֽלֶף׃פ (thousand).

The Leaders of the Twelve Tribes

16  וְעַל֙ (And over) שִׁבְטֵ֣י (the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel):

לָרֽאוּבֵנִ֣י (Over the Reubenite), נָגִ֔יד (the officer) אֱלִיעֶ֖זֶר (Eliezer) בֶּן־ (son) זִכְרִ֑יס (of Zichri);

לַשִּׁ֨מְעוֹנִ֔י (over the Simeonite), שְׁפַטְיָ֖הוּ (Shephatiah) בֶּֽן־ (son) מַעֲכָֽה׃ס (of Maacah);

17  לְלֵוִ֛י (over Levi), חֲשַׁבְיָ֥ה (was Hashabiah) בֶן־ (son) קְמוּאֵ֖ל (of Kemuel);

לְאַהֲרֹ֥ן (over Aaron), צָדֽוֹק׃ס (Zadok);

18  לִֽיהוּדָ֕ה (over Judah), אֱלִיה֖וּ (was Elihu) מֵאֲחֵ֣י (of the brothers) דָוִ֑יד (of David);

לְיִ֨שָׂשכָ֔ר (over Issachar), עָמְרִ֖י (Omri) בֶּן־ (son) מִיכָאֵֽל׃ס (of Michael);

19  לִזְבוּלֻ֕ן (over Zebulun), יִֽשְׁמַֽעְיָ֖הוּ (was Ishmaiah) בֶּן־ (son) עֹבַדְיָ֑הוּ (of Obadiah);

לְנַ֨פְתָּלִ֔י (over Naphtali), יְרִימ֖וֹת (Jerimoth) בֶּן־ (son) עַזְרִיאֵֽל׃ס (of Azriel);

20  לִבְנֵ֣י (over the sons) אֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim), הוֹשֵׁ֖עַ (was Hoshea) בֶּן־ (son) עֲזַזְיָ֑הוּ (of Azaziah);

לַחֲצִי֙ (over the half-) שֵׁ֣בֶט (tribe) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh), יוֹאֵ֖ל (Joel) בֶּן־ (son) פְּדָיָֽהוּ׃ס (of Pedaiah);

21  לַחֲצִ֤י (over the half) הַֽמְנַשֶּׁה֙ (of Manasseh) גִּלְעָ֔דָה (in Gilead), יִדּ֖וֹ (was Iddo) בֶּן־ (son) זְכַרְיָ֑הוּס (of Zechariah);

לְבִנְיָמִ֔ן (over Benjamin), יַעֲשִׂיאֵ֖ל (Jaasiel) בֶּן־ (son) אַבְנֵֽר׃ס (of Abner);

22  לְדָ֕ן (over Dan), עֲזַרְאֵ֖ל (was Azarel) בֶּן־ (son) יְרֹחָ֑ם (of Jeroham).

אֵ֕לֶּה (These were) שָׂרֵ֖י (the leaders) שִׁבְטֵ֥י (of the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

23  וְלֹא־ (Not) נָשָׂ֤א (did take) דָוִיד֙ (David) מִסְפָּרָ֔ם (their number) לְמִבֶּ֛ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (of twenty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וּלְמָ֑טָּה (and under), כִּ֚י (because) אָמַ֣ר (had said) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) לְהַרְבּ֥וֹת (He would multiply) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) כְּכוֹכְבֵ֥י (like the stars) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (of the heavens). 24  יוֹאָ֨ב (Joab) בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָ֜ה (of Zeruiah) הֵחֵ֤ל (began) לִמְנוֹת֙ (to number), וְלֹ֣א (not) כִלָּ֔ה (he did finish), וַיְהִ֥י (and there was) בָזֹ֛את (for this) קֶ֖צֶף (wrath) עַל־ (upon) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel). וְלֹ֤א (And not) עָלָה֙ (did go up) הַמִּסְפָּ֔ר (the count) בְּמִסְפַּ֥ר (into the number) דִּבְרֵֽי־ (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (of King) דָּוִֽיד׃ס (David).

David’s Various Overseers

25  וְעַל֙ (And over) אֹצְר֣וֹת (treasuries) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king), עַזְמָ֖וֶת (was Azmaveth) בֶּן־ (son) עֲדִיאֵ֑לס (of Adiel);

וְעַ֣ל (and over) הָֽאֹצָר֡וֹת (the storehouses) בַּשָּׂדֶ֞ה (in the field), בֶּעָרִ֤ים (in the cities), וּבַכְּפָרִים֙ (and in the villages), וּבַמִּגְדָּל֔וֹת (and in the towers), יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן (Jonathan) בֶּן־ (son) עֻזִּיָּֽהוּ׃ס (of Uzziah);

26  וְעַ֗ל (and over) עֹשֵׂי֙ (those who did) מְלֶ֣אכֶת (the work) הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה (of the field) לַעֲבֹדַ֖ת (for the service) הָאֲדָמָ֑ה (of the ground), עֶזְרִ֖י (was Ezri) בֶּן־ (son) כְּלֽוּב׃ (Chelub);

27  וְעַל־ (and over) הַ֨כְּרָמִ֔ים (the vineyards), שִׁמְעִ֖י (was Shimei) הָרָֽמָתִ֑י (the Ramathite);

וְעַ֤ל (and over) שֶׁבַּכְּרָמִים֙ (the vineyards) לְאֹצְר֣וֹת (for the treasuries) הַיַּ֔יִן (of the wine), זַבְדִּ֖י (was Zabdi) הַשִּׁפְמִֽי׃ס (the Shiphmite);

28  וְעַל־ (and over) הַזֵּיתִ֤ים (the olive trees) וְהַשִּׁקְמִים֙ (and the sycamore trees) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that are) בַּשְּׁפֵלָ֔ה (in the Shephelah), בַּ֥עַל (was Baal-) חָנָ֖ן (hanan) הַגְּדֵרִ֑יס (the Gederite);

וְעַל־ (and over) אֹצְר֥וֹת (the store) הַשֶּׁ֖מֶן (of the oil), יוֹעָֽשׁ׃ס (Joash was);

29  וְעַל־ (and over) הַבָּקָר֙ (the herd) הָרֹעִ֣ים (that fed) בַּשָּׁר֔וֹן (in Sharon), שִׁטְרַי (was Shitrai) הַשָּׁרוֹנִ֑י (the Sharonite);

וְעַל־ (and over) הַבָּקָר֙ (the herd) בָּֽעֲמָקִ֔ים (in the valleys), שָׁפָ֖ט (was Shaphat) בֶּן־ (son) עַדְלָֽי׃ס (of Adlai);

30  וְעַל־ (and over) הַ֨גְּמַלִּ֔ים (the camels), אוֹבִ֖יל (was Obil) הַיִּשְׁמְעֵלִ֑י (the Ishmaelite);

וְעַל־ (and over) הָ֣אֲתֹנ֔וֹת (the donkeys), יֶחְדְּיָ֖הוּ (was Jehdeiah) הַמֵּרֹנֹתִֽי׃ס (the Meronothite);

31  וְעַל־ (and over) הַצֹּ֖אן (the flock), יָזִ֣יז (was Jaziz) הַֽהַגְרִ֑י (the Hagrite).

כָּל־ (All) אֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) שָׂרֵ֣י (were heads) הָרְכ֔וּשׁ (of the property) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that was) לַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (unto King) דָּוִֽיד׃ (David).

The Counselors

32  וִֽיהוֹנָתָ֤ן (And Jonathan) דּוֹד־ (uncle) דָּוִיד֙ (of David)— יוֹעֵ֔ץ (was a counselor), אִישׁ־ (a man) מֵבִ֥ין (wise), וְסוֹפֵ֖ר (and a scribe) ה֑וּא (he was);

וִֽיחִיאֵ֥ל (and Jehiel) בֶּן־ (son) חַכְמוֹנִ֖י (of Hachmoni) עִם־ (was with) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king);

33  וַאֲחִיתֹ֖פֶל (and Ahithophel), יוֹעֵ֣ץ (was counselor) לַמֶּ֑לֶךְס (of the king);

וְחוּשַׁ֥י (and Hushai) הָאַרְכִּ֖י (the Archite), רֵ֥עַ (was companion) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king).

34  וְאַחֲרֵ֣י (And after) אֲחִיתֹ֗פֶל (Ahithophel), יְהוֹיָדָ֤ע (was Jehoiada) בֶּן־ (son) בְּנָיָ֙הוּ֙ (of Benaiah), וְאֶבְיָתָ֔ר (and Abiathar);

וְשַׂר־ (and the head) צָבָ֥א (of the host) לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of the king), יוֹאָֽב׃פ (was Joab).
