Hezekiah Destroys Idolatry in Judah
(2 Chronicles 29:1–2)

1  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בִּשְׁנַ֣ת (in the year) שָׁלֹ֔שׁ (third) לְהוֹשֵׁ֥עַ (of Hoshea) בֶּן־ (son) אֵלָ֖ה (of Elah) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), מָלַ֛ךְ (that began to reign) חִזְקִיָּ֥ה (Hezekiah) בֶן־ (son) אָחָ֖ז (of Ahaz) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah). 2  בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (of twenty) וְחָמֵ֤שׁ (and five) שָׁנָה֙ (years) הָיָ֣ה (he was) בְמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וְעֶשְׂרִ֤ים (and twenty) וָתֵ֙שַׁע֙ (and nine) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother was) אֲבִ֖י (Abi) בַּת־ (daughter) זְכַרְיָֽה׃ (of Zechariah). 3  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הַיָּשָׁ֖ר (right) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (had done) דָּוִ֥ד (David) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father). 4  ה֣וּא׀ (He) הֵסִ֣יר (turned aside) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּמ֗וֹת (the high places), וְשִׁבַּר֙ (and he shattered) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּצֵּבֹ֔ת (the pillars), וְכָרַ֖ת (and he cut down) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאֲשֵׁרָ֑ה (the Asherah pole), וְכִתַּת֩ (and he crushed) נְחַ֨שׁ (serpent) הַנְּחֹ֜שֶׁת (the bronze) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֣ה (had made) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses). כִּ֣י (For) עַד־ (until) הַיָּמִ֤ים (the days) הָהֵ֙מָּה֙ (those) הָי֤וּ (were) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) מְקַטְּרִ֣ים (burning incense) ל֔וֹ (to it) וַיִּקְרָא־ (and calling) ל֖וֹ (to it) נְחֻשְׁתָּֽן׃ (Nehushtan).

5  בַּיהוָ֥ה (In YHWH) אֱלֹהֵֽי־ (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel); בָּטָ֑ח (he trusted) וְאַחֲרָ֞יו (and after him) לֹא־ (none) הָיָ֣ה (was) כָמֹ֗הוּ (like him) בְּכֹל֙ (among all) מַלְכֵ֣י (the kings) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and not those who) הָי֖וּ (were) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before him). 6  וַיִּדְבַּק֙ (And he clung) בַּֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH); לֹא־ (not) סָ֖ר (he did depart) מֵאַֽחֲרָ֑יו (from after Him), וַיִּשְׁמֹר֙ (and he kept) מִצְוֺתָ֔יו (His commandments) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (Moses).

7  וְהָיָ֤ה (And was) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him); בְּכֹ֥ל (in every place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) יֵצֵ֖א (he went) יַשְׂכִּ֑יל (he prospered). וַיִּמְרֹ֥ד (And he rebelled) בְּמֶֽלֶךְ־ (against the king) אַשּׁ֖וּר (of Assyria) וְלֹ֥א (and not) עֲבָדֽוֹ׃ (did serve him). 8  הֽוּא־ (He) הִכָּ֧ה (struck) אֶת־ (-) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֛ים (the Philistines) עַד־ (as far as) עַזָּ֖ה (Gaza) וְאֶת־ (and) גְּבוּלֶ֑יהָ (its border) מִמִּגְדַּ֥ל (from a tower) נוֹצְרִ֖ים (of watchers) עַד־ (to) עִ֥יר (a city) מִבְצָֽר׃פ (fortified).

9  וַֽיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass) בַּשָּׁנָ֤ה (in the year) הָֽרְבִיעִית֙ (fourth) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of King) חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ (Hezekiah)— הִ֚יא (it was) הַשָּׁנָ֣ה (the year) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔ית (seventh) לְהוֹשֵׁ֥עַ (of Hoshea) בֶּן־ (son) אֵלָ֖ה (of Elah) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel)— עָלָ֞ה (that came up) שַׁלְמַנְאֶ֧סֶר (Shalmaneser) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) אַשּׁ֛וּר (of Assyria) עַל־ (against) שֹׁמְר֖וֹן (Samaria), וַיָּ֥צַר (and laid siege) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (to it), 10  וַֽיִּלְכְּדֻ֗הָ (and they took it) מִקְצֵה֙ (at the end) שָׁלֹ֣שׁ (of three) שָׁנִ֔ים (years).

בִּשְׁנַת־ (In the year) שֵׁ֖שׁ (sixth) לְחִזְקִיָּ֑ה (of Hezekiah) הִ֣יא (it was) שְׁנַת־ (the year) תֵּ֗שַׁע (ninth) לְהוֹשֵׁ֙עַ֙ (of Hoshea) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel)) נִלְכְּדָ֖ה (was captured) שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ (Samaria). 11  וַיֶּ֧גֶל (And carried away) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אַשּׁ֛וּר (of Assyria) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) אַשּׁ֑וּרָה (to Assyria), וַיַּנְחֵ֞ם (and he led them) בַּחְלַ֧ח (to Halah), וּבְחָב֛וֹר (and to Habor) נְהַ֥ר (by the river) גּוֹזָ֖ן (of Gozan), וְעָרֵ֥י (and to the cities) מָדָֽי׃ (of the Medes), 12  עַ֣ל׀ (because) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) שָׁמְע֗וּ (they did obey) בְּקוֹל֙ (the voice) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֔ם (their God), וַיַּעַבְרוּ֙ (and they transgressed) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִית֔וֹ (His covenant) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) צִוָּ֔ה (had commanded) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) עֶ֣בֶד (the servant) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמְע֖וּ (they would hear) וְלֹ֥א (and not) עָשֽׂוּ׃פ (do it).

Sennacherib Invades Judah
(2 Chronicles 32:1–8; Psalm 46:1–11)

13  וּבְאַרְבַּע֩ (And in the four) עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה (and tenth) שָׁנָ֜ה (year) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of King) חִזְקִיָּ֗ה (Hezekiah), עָלָ֞ה (came up) סַנְחֵרִ֤יב (Sennacherib) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) אַשּׁוּר֙ (of Assyria) עַ֣ל (against) כָּל־ (all) עָרֵ֧י (cities) יְהוּדָ֛ה (of Judah) הַבְּצֻר֖וֹת (the fortified), וַֽיִּתְפְּשֵֽׂם׃ (and he seized them). 14  וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (And sent) חִזְקִיָּ֣ה (Hezekiah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֣ה (of Judah) אֶל־ (to) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אַשּׁוּר֩׀ (of Assyria) לָכִ֨ישָׁה׀ (at Lachish), לֵאמֹ֤ר׀ (saying), חָטָ֙אתִי֙ (I have done wrong); שׁ֣וּב (turn away) מֵֽעָלַ֔י (from me)— אֵ֛ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (that which) תִּתֵּ֥ן (you impose) עָלַ֖י (on me) אֶשָּׂ֑א (I will bear).

וַיָּ֨שֶׂם (And laid) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אַשּׁ֜וּר (of Assyria) עַל־ (upon) חִזְקִיָּ֣ה (Hezekiah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah) שְׁלֹ֤שׁ (three) מֵאוֹת֙ (hundred) כִּכַּר־ (talents) כֶּ֔סֶף (of silver) וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים (and thirty) כִּכַּ֥ר (talents) זָהָֽב׃ (of gold). 15  וַיִּתֵּן֙ (And gave him) חִזְקִיָּ֔ה (Hezekiah) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַכֶּ֖סֶף (the silver) הַנִּמְצָ֣א (found) בֵית־ (in the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וּבְאֹצְר֖וֹת (and in the treasuries) בֵּ֥ית (of house) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king).

16  בָּעֵ֣ת (At the time) הַהִ֗יא (that) קִצַּ֨ץ (cut off) חִזְקִיָּ֜ה (Hezekiah) אֶת־ (-) דַּלְת֨וֹת (the doors) הֵיכַ֤ל (of the temple) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאֹ֣מְנ֔וֹת (the pillars) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) צִפָּ֔ה (had overlaid) חִזְקִיָּ֖ה (Hezekiah) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖ם (and he gave them) לְמֶ֥לֶךְ (to the king) אַשּֽׁוּר׃פ (of Assyria).

Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem

17  וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (And sent) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אַשּׁ֡וּר (of Assyria) אֶת־ (-) תַּרְתָּ֥ן (the Tartan) וְאֶת־ (and) רַב־ (the Rab-) סָרִ֣יס׀ (saris) וְאֶת־ (and) רַב־ (the Rab-) שָׁקֵ֨ה (shakeh) מִן־ (from) לָכִ֜ישׁ (Lachish) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ (King) חִזְקִיָּ֛הוּ (Hezekiah) בְּחֵ֥יל (with an army) כָּבֵ֖ד (great) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (against Jerusalem). וַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙ (And they went up) וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ (and came) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (to Jerusalem). וַיַּעֲל֣וּ (And they went up) וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ (and came in) וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ (and stood) בִּתְעָלַת֙ (by the conduit) הַבְּרֵכָ֣ה (from the pool) הָֽעֶלְיוֹנָ֔ה (of the upper) אֲשֶׁ֕ר (that was) בִּמְסִלַּ֖ת (on the highway to) שְׂדֵ֥ה (the Field) כוֹבֵֽס׃ (of the Fuller). 18  וַֽיִּקְרְאוּ֙ (And they called) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), וַיֵּצֵ֧א (and came out) אֲלֵהֶ֛ם (to them) אֶלְיָקִ֥ים (Eliakim) בֶּן־ (son) חִלְקִיָּ֖הוּ (of Hilkiah) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who was) עַל־ (over) הַבָּ֑יִת (the house), וְשֶׁבְנָה֙ (and Shebna) הַסֹּפֵ֔ר (the scribe), וְיוֹאָ֥ח (and Joah) בֶּן־ (son) אָסָ֖ף (of Asaph) הַמַּזְכִּֽיר׃ (the recorder).

19  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֲלֵהֶם֙ (to them) רַב־ (the Rab-) שָׁקֵ֔ה (shakeh), אִמְרוּ־ (Say) נָ֖א (now) אֶל־ (to) חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ (Hezekiah): כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (the king) הַגָּדוֹל֙ (great), מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) אַשּׁ֔וּר (of Assyria), מָ֧ה (what) הַבִּטָּח֛וֹן (confidence is) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (in which) בָּטָֽחְתָּ׃ (you trust)? 20  אָמַ֙רְתָּ֙ (You say) אַךְ־ (but) דְּבַר־ (a word) שְׂפָתַ֔יִם (of the lips) עֵצָ֥ה (counsel) וּגְבוּרָ֖ה (and strength) לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה (for war). עַתָּה֙ (And) עַל־ (on) מִ֣י (whom) בָטַ֔חְתָּ (do you trust), כִּ֥י (that) מָרַ֖דְתָּ (you rebel) בִּֽי׃ (against me)?

21  עַתָּ֡ה (Now) הִנֵּ֣ה (behold), בָטַ֣חְתָּ (You are trusting) לְּךָ֡ (for yourself) עַל־ (on) מִשְׁעֶנֶת֩ (the staff) הַקָּנֶ֨ה (of the reed) הָרָצ֤וּץ (broken) הַזֶּה֙ (this)— עַל־ (on) מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) יִסָּמֵ֥ךְ (if leans) אִישׁ֙ (a man) עָלָ֔יו (on), וּבָ֥א (and it will go) בְכַפּ֖וֹ (into his hand) וּנְקָבָ֑הּ (and pierce it). כֵּ֚ן (Thus) פַּרְעֹ֣ה (is Pharaoh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) לְכָֽל־ (to all) הַבֹּטְחִ֖ים (who trust) עָלָֽיו׃ (in him). 22  וְכִי־ (But if) תֹאמְר֣וּן (you⁺ say) אֵלַ֔י (to me), אֶל־ (In) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (our God) בָּטָ֑חְנוּ (we trust), הֲלוֹא־ (is it not) ה֗וּא (He) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (for whom) הֵסִ֤יר (has taken away) חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Hezekiah) אֶת־ (-) בָּמֹתָ֣יו (His high places) וְאֶת־ (and) מִזְבְּחֹתָ֔יו (His altars), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and he said) לִֽיהוּדָה֙ (to Judah) וְלִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (and to Jerusalem), לִפְנֵי֙ (Before) הַמִּזְבֵּ֣חַ (the altar) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) תִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ (you⁺ shall bow low) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem)’?

23  וְעַתָּה֙ (and now) הִתְעָ֣רֶב (give a pledge) נָ֔א (please), אֶת־ (to) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my master) אֶת־ (-) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) אַשּׁ֑וּר (of Assyria), וְאֶתְּנָ֤ה (and I will give) לְךָ֙ (to you) אַלְפַּ֣יִם (two thousand) סוּסִ֔ים (horses), אִם־ (if) תּוּכַ֕ל (you are able) לָ֥תֶת (to put) לְךָ֖ (for yourself) רֹכְבִ֥ים (riders) עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (on them). 24  וְאֵ֣יךְ (And how) תָּשִׁ֗יב (will you turn back) אֵ֠ת (-) פְּנֵ֨י (the face) פַחַ֥ת (of a captain) אַחַ֛ד (of one) עַבְדֵ֥י (of the servants) אֲדֹנִ֖י (of my master) הַקְּטַנִּ֑ים (of the least), וַתִּבְטַ֤ח (and put trust) לְךָ֙ (your) עַל־ (in) מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt) לְרֶ֖כֶב (for chariots) וּלְפָרָשִֽׁים׃ (and for horsemen)? 25  עַתָּה֙ (Now) הֲמִבַּלְעֲדֵ֣י (is it without) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) עָלִ֛יתִי (that I have come up) עַל־ (against) הַמָּק֥וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) לְהַשְׁחִת֑וֹ (to destroy it)? יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אָמַ֣ר (said) אֵלַ֔י (to me), עֲלֵ֛ה (Go up) עַל־ (against) הָאָ֥רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֖את (this) וְהַשְׁחִיתָֽהּ׃ (and destroy it).

26  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֶלְיָקִ֣ים (Eliakim) בֶּן־ (son) חִ֠לְקִיָּהוּ (of Hilkiah), וְשֶׁבְנָ֨ה (and Shebna), וְיוֹאָ֜ח (and Joah) אֶל־ (to) רַב־ (the Rab-) שָׁקֵ֗ה (shakeh), דַּבֶּר־ (Speak), נָ֤א (please), אֶל־ (to) עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ (your servants) אֲרָמִ֔ית (in Aramaic). כִּ֥י (For) שֹׁמְעִ֖ים (understand it) אֲנָ֑חְנוּ (we), וְאַל־ (and not) תְּדַבֵּ֤ר (do speak) עִמָּ֙נוּ֙ (with us) יְהוּדִ֔ית (in Judean) בְּאָזְנֵ֣י (in the ears) הָעָ֔ם (of the people) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who are) עַל־ (on) הַחֹמָֽה׃ (the wall).

27  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (to them) רַב־ (the Rab-) שָׁקֵ֗ה (shakeh), הַעַ֨ל (Is it for) אֲדֹנֶ֤יךָ (your master), וְאֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ (and to you only), שְׁלָחַ֣נִי (that has sent me) אֲדֹנִ֔י (my master) לְדַבֵּ֖ר (to speak) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the words) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), הֲלֹ֣א (is it not) עַל־ (for) הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים (the men) הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙ (sitting) עַל־ (on) הַ֣חֹמָ֔ה (the wall), לֶאֱכֹ֣ל (who are to eat) אֶת (-) חֲרֵיהֶם (their own dung) וְלִשְׁתּ֛וֹת (and drink) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁינֵיהֶם (their own urine) עִמָּכֶֽם׃ (with you⁺)?

28  וַֽיַּעֲמֹד֙ (And stood) רַב־ (the Rab-) שָׁקֵ֔ה (shakeh) וַיִּקְרָ֥א (and called out) בְקוֹל־ (with a voice) גָּד֖וֹל (loud) יְהוּדִ֑ית (in Judean), וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (and spoke), וַיֹּ֔אמֶר (and saying), שִׁמְע֛וּ (Hear) דְּבַר־ (the word) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (of the king) הַגָּד֖וֹל (great), מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) אַשּֽׁוּר׃ (of Assyria). 29  כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king): אַל־ (Not) יַשִּׁ֥יא (do let deceive) לָכֶ֖ם (you⁺) חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ (Hezekiah), כִּי־ (for) לֹ֣א (not) יוּכַ֔ל (he shall be able) לְהַצִּ֥יל (to deliver) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) מִיָּדֽוֹ׃ (from his hand). 30  וְאַל־ (And not) יַבְטַ֨ח (let make trust) אֶתְכֶ֤ם (you⁺) חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Hezekiah) אֶל־ (in) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הַצֵּ֥ל (Delivering) יַצִּילֵ֖נוּ (will deliver us) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וְלֹ֤א (and not) תִנָּתֵן֙ (shall be given) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֣יר (the city) הַזֹּ֔את (this) בְּיַ֖ד (into the hand) מֶ֥לֶךְ (of the king) אַשּֽׁוּר׃ (of Assyria).

31  אַֽל־ (Not) תִּשְׁמְע֖וּ (do listen) אֶל־ (to) חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ (Hezekiah), כִּי֩ (for) כֹ֨ה (thus) אָמַ֜ר (says) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) אַשּׁ֗וּר (of Assyria): עֲשֽׂוּ־ (Make) אִתִּ֤י (with me) בְרָכָה֙ (a blessing), וּצְא֣וּ (and come out) אֵלַ֔י (to me), וְאִכְל֤וּ (and eat) אִישׁ־ (everyone of you) גַּפְנוֹ֙ (from his own vine), וְאִ֣ישׁ (and each man) תְּאֵֽנָת֔וֹ (from his own fig tree), וּשְׁת֖וּ (and drink) אִ֥ישׁ (each man) מֵֽי־ (the waters) בוֹרֽוֹ׃ (of his own cistern), 32  עַד־ (until) בֹּאִי֩ (I come) וְלָקַחְתִּ֨י (and take away) אֶתְכֶ֜ם (you⁺) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֣רֶץ (a land) כְּאַרְצְכֶ֗ם (like your⁺ own land)— אֶרֶץ֩ (a land) דָּגָ֨ן (of grain) וְתִיר֜וֹשׁ (and new wine), אֶ֧רֶץ (a land) לֶ֣חֶם (of bread) וּכְרָמִ֗ים (and vineyards), אֶ֣רֶץ (a land) זֵ֤ית (of olive) יִצְהָר֙ (oil) וּדְבַ֔שׁ (and honey)— וִֽחְי֖וּ (that you⁺ may live) וְלֹ֣א (and not) תָמֻ֑תוּ (die). וְאַֽל־ (Not) תִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ (do listen) אֶל־ (to) חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ (Hezekiah), כִּֽי־ (lest) יַסִּ֤ית (he persuade) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) יַצִּילֵֽנוּ׃ (will deliver us).

33  הַהַצֵּ֥ל (Delivering) הִצִּ֛ילוּ (have delivered) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the gods) הַגּוֹיִ֖ם (of the nations) אִ֣ישׁ (any) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצ֑וֹ (his land) מִיַּ֖ד (from the hand) מֶ֥לֶךְ (of the king) אַשּֽׁוּר׃ (of Assyria)? 34  אַיֵּה֩ (Where are) אֱלֹהֵ֨י (the gods) חֲמָ֜ת (of Hamath) וְאַרְפָּ֗ד (and Arpad)? אַיֵּ֛ה (Where are) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the gods) סְפַרְוַ֖יִם (of Sepharvaim) הֵנַ֣ע (and Hena) וְעִוָּ֑ה (and Ivah)? כִּֽי־ (Indeed), הִצִּ֥ילוּ (have they delivered) אֶת־ (-) שֹׁמְר֖וֹן (Samaria) מִיָּדִֽי׃ (from my hand)? 35  מִ֚י (Who) בְּכָל־ (among all) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) הָֽאֲרָצ֔וֹת (of the countries) אֲשֶׁר־ (-) הִצִּ֥ילוּ (have delivered) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצָ֖ם (their lands) מִיָּדִ֑י (from my hand), כִּי־ (that) יַצִּ֧יל (should deliver) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (Jerusalem) מִיָּדִֽי׃ (from my hand)?

36  וְהֶחֱרִ֣ישׁוּ (And kept silent) הָעָ֔ם (the people) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) עָנ֥וּ (answered) אֹת֖וֹ (him) דָּבָ֑ר (a word), כִּי־ (for) מִצְוַ֨ת (the command) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (from the king) הִ֛יא (it was), לֵאמֹ֖ר (saying), לֹ֥א (Not) תַעֲנֻֽהוּ׃ (do answer him).

37  וַיָּבֹ֣א (And came) אֶלְיָקִ֣ים (Eliakim) בֶּן־ (son) חִלְקִיָּ֣ה (of Hilkiah) אֲשֶׁר־ (who was) עַל־ (over) הַ֠בַּיִת (the house), וְשֶׁבְנָ֨א (and Shebna) הַסֹּפֵ֜ר (the scribe), וְיוֹאָ֨ח (and Joah) בֶּן־ (son) אָסָ֧ף (of Asaph) הַמַּזְכִּ֛יר (the recorder) אֶל־ (to) חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ (Hezekiah) קְרוּעֵ֣י (with torn) בְגָדִ֑ים (clothes), וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ (and they declared) ל֔וֹ (to him) דִּבְרֵ֖י (the words) רַב־ (of the Rab-) שָׁקֵֽה׃ (shakeh).
