Hoshea the Last King of Israel

1  בִּשְׁנַת֙ (In the year) שְׁתֵּ֣ים (two) עֶשְׂרֵ֔ה (and tenth) לְאָחָ֖ז (of Ahaz) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), מָ֠לַךְ (became king) הוֹשֵׁ֨עַ (Hoshea) בֶּן־ (son) אֵלָ֧ה (of Elah) בְשֹׁמְר֛וֹן (in Samaria) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) תֵּ֥שַׁע (nine) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years). 2  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), רַ֗ק (but) לֹ֚א (not) כְּמַלְכֵ֣י (as the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) הָי֖וּ (were) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before his face).

3  עָלָ֣יו (Against him) עָלָ֔ה (came up) שַׁלְמַנְאֶ֖סֶר (Shalmaneser) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) אַשּׁ֑וּר (of Assyria); וַֽיְהִי־ (and became) ל֤וֹ (to him) הוֹשֵׁ֙עַ֙ (Hoshea) עֶ֔בֶד (a vassal), וַיָּ֥שֶׁב (and returned) ל֖וֹ (to him) מִנְחָֽה׃ (tribute). 4  וַיִּמְצָא֩ (And uncovered) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אַשּׁ֨וּר (of Assyria) בְּהוֹשֵׁ֜עַ (in Hoshea) קֶ֗שֶׁר (a conspiracy), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (in that) שָׁלַ֤ח (he had sent) מַלְאָכִים֙ (messengers) אֶל־ (to) ס֣וֹא (So) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), וְלֹא־ (and not) הֶעֱלָ֥ה (he brought up) מִנְחָ֛ה (tribute) לְמֶ֥לֶךְ (to the king) אַשּׁ֖וּר (of Assyria) כְּשָׁנָ֣ה (as year) בְשָׁנָ֑ה (by year). וַֽיַּעַצְרֵ֙הוּ֙ (And shut him up) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) אַשּׁ֔וּר (of Assyria) וַיַּאַסְרֵ֖הוּ (and bound him) בֵּ֥ית (in the house) כֶּֽלֶא׃ (of imprisonment).

5  וַיַּ֥עַל (And went) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אַשּׁ֖וּר (of Assyria) בְּכָל־ (throughout all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land), וַיַּ֙עַל֙ (and he went up) שֹׁמְר֔וֹן (to Samaria) וַיָּ֥צַר (and besieged) עָלֶ֖יהָ (it) שָׁלֹ֥שׁ (three) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years).

6  בִּשְׁנַ֨ת (In year) הַתְּשִׁיעִ֜ית (the ninth) לְהוֹשֵׁ֗עַ (of Hoshea), לָכַ֤ד (captured) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אַשּׁוּר֙ (of Assyria) אֶת־ (-) שֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (Samaria), וַיֶּ֥גֶל (and he carried away) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) אַשּׁ֑וּרָה (to Assyria) וַיֹּ֨שֶׁב (and settled) אֹתָ֜ם (them) בַּחְלַ֧ח (in Halah), וּבְחָב֛וֹר (and by the Habor) נְהַ֥ר (River) גּוֹזָ֖ן (in Gozan), וְעָרֵ֥י (and in the cities) מָדָֽי׃פ (of the Medes).

7  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), כִּֽי־ (that) חָטְא֤וּ (had sinned) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) לַיהוָ֣ה (against YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֔ם (their God) הַמַּעֲלֶ֤ה (who had brought up) אֹתָם֙ (them) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (out of the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), מִתַּ֕חַת (from under) יַ֖ד (the hand) פַּרְעֹ֣ה (of Pharaoh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt). וַיִּֽירְא֖וּ (And they had feared) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (gods) אֲחֵרִֽים׃ (other) 8  וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ (and they had walked) בְּחֻקּ֣וֹת (in the statutes) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (of the nations) אֲשֶׁר֙ (whom) הוֹרִ֣ישׁ (had cast out) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) מִפְּנֵ֖י (from before) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וּמַלְכֵ֥י (and of the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) עָשֽׂוּ׃ (they had made).

9  וַיְחַפְּא֣וּ (And secretly did) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) דְּבָרִים֙ (things) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that were) לֹא־ (not) כֵ֔ן (right) עַל־ (against) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם (their God), וַיִּבְנ֨וּ (and they built) לָהֶ֤ם (for themselves) בָּמוֹת֙ (high places) בְּכָל־ (in all) עָ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם (their cities), מִמִּגְדַּ֥ל (from a tower) נוֹצְרִ֖ים (of the watchers) עַד־ (to) עִ֥יר (a city) מִבְצָֽר׃ (fortified). 10  וַיַּצִּ֧בוּ (And they set up) לָהֶ֛ם (for themselves) מַצֵּב֖וֹת (pillars) וַאֲשֵׁרִ֑ים (and Asherah poles) עַ֚ל (on) כָּל־ (every) גִּבְעָ֣ה (hill) גְבֹהָ֔ה (high) וְתַ֖חַת (and under) כָּל־ (every) עֵ֥ץ (tree) רַעֲנָֽן׃ (green). 11  וַיְקַטְּרוּ־ (And they burned incense) שָׁם֙ (there) בְּכָל־ (on all) בָּמ֔וֹת (the high places), כַּגּוֹיִ֕ם (like the nations) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הֶגְלָ֥ה (had carried away) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם (before them), וַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֙ (and they did) דְּבָרִ֣ים (things) רָעִ֔ים (wicked) לְהַכְעִ֖יס (to provoke) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 12  וַיַּֽעַבְד֖וּ (And for they served) הַגִּלֻּלִ֑ים (the idols) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (of which) אָמַ֤ר (had said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לָהֶ֔ם (to them), לֹ֥א (Not) תַעֲשׂ֖וּ (you⁺ shall do) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֥ר (the thing) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

13  וַיָּ֣עַד (And testified) יְהוָ֡ה (YHWH) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל (against Israel) וּבִיהוּדָ֡ה (and against Judah) בְּיַד֩ (by) כָּל־ (all) נְבִיאוֹ (His prophets) כָל־ (and every) חֹזֶ֜ה (seer), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), שֻׁ֝֠בוּ (Turn) מִדַּרְכֵיכֶ֤ם (from your⁺ ways) הָֽרָעִים֙ (evil) וְשִׁמְרוּ֙ (and keep) מִצְוֺתַ֣י (My commandments) חֻקּוֹתַ֔י (and My statutes), כְּכָ֨ל־ (according to all) הַתּוֹרָ֔ה (of the Law) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) צִוִּ֖יתִי (I commanded) אֶת־ (-) אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ fathers), וַֽאֲשֶׁר֙ (and that) שָׁלַ֣חְתִּי (I sent) אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (to you⁺) בְּיַ֖ד (by) עֲבָדַ֥י (My servants) הַנְּבִיאִֽים׃ (the prophets).

14  וְלֹ֖א (And not) שָׁמֵ֑עוּ (they would listen), וַיַּקְשׁ֤וּ (and they stiffened) אֶת־ (-) עָרְפָּם֙ (their necks) כְּעֹ֣רֶף (like the necks) אֲבוֹתָ֔ם (of their fathers) אֲשֶׁר֙ (who) לֹ֣א (not) הֶאֱמִ֔ינוּ (did remain steadfast) בַּֽיהוָ֖ה (in YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃ (their God). 15  וַיִּמְאֲס֣וּ (And they rejected) אֶת־ (-) חֻקָּ֗יו (His statutes), וְאֶת־ (and) בְּרִיתוֹ֙ (His covenant) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) כָּרַ֣ת (He had made) אֶת־ (with) אֲבוֹתָ֔ם (their fathers), וְאֵת֙ (and) עֵֽדְוֺתָ֔יו (His testimonies) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הֵעִ֖יד (He had testified) בָּ֑ם (against them). וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ (And they followed) אַחֲרֵ֤י (after) הַהֶ֙בֶל֙ (the idols) וַיֶּהְבָּ֔לוּ (and they became empty) וְאַחֲרֵ֤י (and went after) הַגּוֹיִם֙ (the nations) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) סְבִֽיבֹתָ֔ם (all around them), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) צִוָּ֤ה (had commanded) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֹתָ֔ם (them) לְבִלְתִּ֖י (that not) עֲשׂ֥וֹת (they should do) כָּהֶֽם׃ (like them).

16  וַיַּעַזְב֗וּ (And they left) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) מִצְוֺת֙ (the commandments) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֔ם (their God), וַיַּעֲשׂ֥וּ (and they made) לָהֶ֛ם (for themselves) מַסֵּכָ֖ה (a molten image) שְׁנֵים (and two) עֲגָלִ֑ים (calves), וַיַּעֲשׂ֣וּ (and they made) אֲשֵׁירָ֗ה (an Asherah pole), וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲווּ֙ (and bowed low) לְכָל־ (to all) צְבָ֣א (the host) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens), וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ (and they served) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּֽעַל׃ (the Baal). 17  וַֽ֠יַּעֲבִירוּ (And they caused to pass) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵיהֶ֤ם (their sons) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנֽוֹתֵיהֶם֙ (daughters) בָּאֵ֔שׁ (through the fire), וַיִּקְסְמ֥וּ (and they practiced) קְסָמִ֖ים (divination) וַיְנַחֵ֑שׁוּ (and soothsaying) וַיִּֽתְמַכְּר֗וּ (and sold themselves) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do) הָרַ֛ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לְהַכְעִיסֽוֹ׃ (to provoke Him).

18  וַיִּתְאַנַּ֨ף (And was angry) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) מְאֹד֙ (very) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (with Israel) וַיְסִרֵ֖ם (and He turned them aside) מֵעַ֣ל (from) פָּנָ֑יו (from His presence). לֹ֣א (None) נִשְׁאַ֔ר (there was left) רַ֛ק (but) שֵׁ֥בֶט (the tribe) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) לְבַדּֽוֹ׃ (by itself). 19  גַּם־ (Even) יְהוּדָ֕ה (Judah) לֹ֣א (not) שָׁמַ֔ר (did keep) אֶת־ (-) מִצְוֺ֖ת (the commandments) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם (their God), וַיֵּ֣לְכ֔וּ (and they walked) בְּחֻקּ֥וֹת (in the statutes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשֽׂוּ׃ (they made). 20  וַיִּמְאַ֨ס (And rejected) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) בְּכָל־ (all) זֶ֤רַע (the seed) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), וַיְעַנֵּ֔ם (and He afflicted them) וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖ם (and delivered them) בְּיַד־ (into the hand) שֹׁסִ֑ים (of plunderers), עַ֛ד (until) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הִשְׁלִיכָ֖ם (He had cast them) מִפָּנָֽיו׃ (away from his face).

21  כִּֽי־ (For) קָרַ֣ע (He tore) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel) מֵעַל֙ (from) בֵּ֣ית (the house) דָּוִ֔ד (of David), וַיַּמְלִ֖יכוּ (and they made king) אֶת־ (-) יָרָבְעָ֣ם (Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָ֑ט (of Nebat). וַיַּדֵּא (And drove away) יָרָבְעָ֤ם (Jeroboam) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י (from following) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְהֶחֱטֵיאָ֖ם (and he made them sin) חֲטָאָ֥ה (a sin) גְדוֹלָֽה׃ (great). 22  וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ (And for walked) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) בְּכָל־ (in all) חַטֹּ֥אות (the sins) יָרָבְעָ֖ם (of Jeroboam) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he did). לֹא־ (Not) סָ֖רוּ (they did depart) מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ (from them) 23  עַ֠ד (until) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הֵסִ֨יר (turned aside) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) מֵעַ֣ל (from) פָּנָ֔יו (His presence), כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) דִּבֶּ֔ר (He had said) בְּיַ֖ד (by) כָּל־ (all) עֲבָדָ֣יו (His servants) הַנְּבִיאִ֑ים (the prophets). וַיִּ֨גֶל (And was carried away) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (Israel) מֵעַ֤ל (from) אַדְמָתוֹ֙ (their own land) אַשּׁ֔וּרָה (to Assyria), עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃פ (this).

Samaria Resettled

24  וַיָּבֵ֣א (And brought in those) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אַשּׁ֡וּר (of Assyria) מִבָּבֶ֡ל (from Babylon) וּ֠מִכּוּ֠תָה (and Cuthah) וּמֵעַוָּ֤א (and Ava) וּמֵֽחֲמָת֙ (and Hamath) וּסְפַרְוַ֔יִם (and from Sepharvaim), וַיֹּ֙שֶׁב֙ (and he caused them to dwell) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in the cities) שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן (of Samaria) תַּ֖חַת (instead) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). וַיִּֽרְשׁוּ֙ (And they took possession) אֶת־ (-) שֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (of Samaria) וַיֵּֽשְׁב֖וּ (and dwelt) בְּעָרֶֽיהָ׃ (in its cities).

25  וַיְהִ֗י (And it was) בִּתְחִלַּת֙ (at the beginning) שִׁבְתָּ֣ם (of their dwelling) שָׁ֔ם (there), לֹ֥א (that not) יָרְא֖וּ (they did fear) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַיְשַׁלַּ֨ח (and sent) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) בָּהֶם֙ (among them) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣אֲרָי֔וֹת (the lions) וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ (and they were) הֹרְגִ֖ים (killing) בָּהֶֽם׃ (among them). 26  וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ (And they spoke) לְמֶ֣לֶךְ (to the king) אַשּׁוּר֮ (of Assyria), לֵאמֹר֒ (saying), הַגּוֹיִ֗ם (The nations) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whom) הִגְלִ֙יתָ֙ (you have carried away) וַתּ֙וֹשֶׁב֙ (and placed) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in the cities) שֹׁמְר֔וֹן (of Samaria) לֹ֣א (not) יָֽדְע֔וּ (do know) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁפַּ֖ט (the custom) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (of the God) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land); וַיְשַׁלַּח־ (and he has sent) בָּ֣ם (among them) אֶת־ (-) הָאֲרָי֗וֹת (the lions) וְהִנָּם֙ (and behold), מְמִיתִ֣ים (they are killing) אוֹתָ֔ם (them), כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ (because) אֵינָ֣ם (not) יֹדְעִ֔ים (they do know) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁפַּ֖ט (the custom) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (of the God) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

27  וַיְצַ֨ו (And commanded) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) אַשּׁ֜וּר (of Assyria), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), הֹלִ֤יכוּ (Send) שָׁ֙מָּה֙ (there) אֶחָ֤ד (one) מֵהַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (of the priests) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) הִגְלִיתֶ֣ם (you⁺ carried away) מִשָּׁ֔ם (from there), וְיֵלְכ֖וּ (and let him go) וְיֵ֣שְׁבוּ (and dwell) שָׁ֑ם (there), וְיֹרֵ֕ם (and let him teach them) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁפַּ֖ט (the custom) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (of the God) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

28  וַיָּבֹ֞א (And came) אֶחָ֣ד (one) מֵהַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים (of the priests) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whom) הִגְלוּ֙ (they had carried away) מִשֹּׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (from Samaria), וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב (and he dwelt) בְּבֵֽית־ (in Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el) וַֽיְהִי֙ (and) מוֹרֶ֣ה (taught) אֹתָ֔ם (them) אֵ֖יךְ (how) יִֽירְא֥וּ (they should fear) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

29  וַיִּהְי֣וּ (And they were) עֹשִׂ֔ים (making) גּ֥וֹי (nation) גּ֖וֹי (by nation) אֱלֹהָ֑יו (its gods) וַיַּנִּ֣יחוּ׀ (and they set them up) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the shrines) הַבָּמ֗וֹת (of the high places) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) עָשׂוּ֙ (had made) הַשֹּׁ֣מְרֹנִ֔ים (the Samaritans)— גּ֥וֹי (nation) גּוֹי֙ (by nation) בְּעָ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם (in the cities) אֲשֶׁ֛ר (where) הֵ֥ם (they) יֹשְׁבִ֖ים (dwelt) שָֽׁם׃ (there). 30  וְאַנְשֵׁ֣י (And the men) בָבֶ֗ל (of Babylon) עָשׂוּ֙ (made) אֶת־ (-) סֻכּ֣וֹת (Succoth-) בְּנ֔וֹת (benoth), וְאַנְשֵׁי־ (and the men) כ֔וּת (of Cuth) עָשׂ֖וּ (made) אֶת־ (-) נֵֽרְגַ֑ל (Nergal), וְאַנְשֵׁ֥י (and the men) חֲמָ֖ת (of Hamath) עָשׂ֥וּ (made) אֶת־ (-) אֲשִׁימָֽא׃ (Ashima), 31  וְהָעַוִּ֛ים (and the Avites) עָשׂ֥וּ (made) נִבְחַ֖ז (Nibhaz) וְאֶת־ (and) תַּרְתָּ֑ק (Tartak), וְהַסְפַרְוִ֗ים (and the Sepharvites) שֹׂרְפִ֤ים (burned) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵיהֶם֙ (their children) בָּאֵ֔שׁ (in the fire) לְאַדְרַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (to Adrammelech) וַֽעֲנַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (and Anammelech), אֱלֹהַּ (the gods) סְפָרִים׃ (of Sepharvaim).

32  וַיִּהְי֥וּ (And) יְרֵאִ֖ים (they feared) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) וַיַּעֲשׂ֨וּ (and they made) לָהֶ֤ם (for themselves) מִקְצוֹתָם֙ (from every class) כֹּהֲנֵ֣י (priests) בָמ֔וֹת (of the high places), וַיִּהְי֛וּ (and they were) עֹשִׂ֥ים (acting) לָהֶ֖ם (for them) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the shrines) הַבָּמֽוֹת׃ (of the high places). 33  אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) הָי֣וּ (they were) יְרֵאִ֑ים (fearing), וְאֶת־ (and) אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶם֙ (their own gods) הָי֣וּ (they were) עֹֽבְדִ֔ים (serving) כְּמִשְׁפַּט֙ (according to the custom) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (of the nations) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הִגְל֥וּ (they were carried away) אֹתָ֖ם (-) מִשָּֽׁם׃ (from there).

34  עַ֣ד (To) הַיּ֤וֹם (the day) הַזֶּה֙ (this) הֵ֣ם (they) עֹשִׂ֔ים (continue practicing) כַּמִּשְׁפָּטִ֖ים (the customs) הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֑ים (former); אֵינָ֤ם (not) יְרֵאִים֙ (they do fear) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְאֵינָ֣ם (and not) עֹשִׂ֗ים (do they follow) כְּחֻקֹּתָם֙ (according to their statutes), וּכְמִשְׁפָּטָ֔ם (or according to their ordinances), וְכַתּוֹרָ֣ה (or according to the law) וְכַמִּצְוָ֗ה (and the commandment) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) צִוָּ֤ה (had commanded) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) שָׂ֥ם (He named) שְׁמ֖וֹ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

35  וַיִּכְרֹ֨ת (And had cut) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אִתָּם֙ (with them) בְּרִ֔ית (a covenant), וַיְצַוֵּ֣ם (and commanded them), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), לֹ֥א (Not) תִֽירְא֖וּ (you⁺ shall fear) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֑ים (other), וְלֹא־ (and not) תִשְׁתַּחֲו֣וּ (bow low) לָהֶ֔ם (to them), וְלֹ֣א (and not) תַעַבְד֔וּם (serve them), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תִזְבְּח֖וּ (sacrifice) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them). 36  כִּ֣י (For) אִֽם־ (but) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), אֲשֶׁר֩ (who) הֶעֱלָ֨ה (brought up) אֶתְכֶ֜ם (you⁺) מֵאֶ֧רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֛יִם (of Egypt) בְּכֹ֧חַ (with power) גָּד֛וֹל (great) וּבִזְר֥וֹעַ (and an arm) נְטוּיָ֖ה (outstretched), אֹת֣וֹ (Him) תִירָ֑אוּ (you⁺ shall fear), וְל֥וֹ (and Him) תִֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ (you⁺ shall worship), וְל֥וֹ (and to Him) תִזְבָּֽחוּ׃ (you⁺ shall offer sacrifices). 37  וְאֶת־ (And) הַחֻקִּ֨ים (the statutes) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֜ים (the ordinances) וְהַתּוֹרָ֤ה (and the law) וְהַמִּצְוָה֙ (and the commandment) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) כָּתַ֣ב (He wrote) לָכֶ֔ם (for you⁺), תִּשְׁמְר֥וּן (you⁺ shall be careful) לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת (to observe) כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִ֑ים (the days). וְלֹ֥א (And not) תִֽירְא֖וּ (you⁺ shall fear) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (gods) אֲחֵרִֽים׃ (other). 38  וְהַבְּרִ֛ית (And the covenant) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) כָּרַ֥תִּי (I have made) אִתְּכֶ֖ם (with you⁺), לֹ֣א (not) תִשְׁכָּ֑חוּ (you⁺ shall forget). וְלֹ֥א (And not) תִֽירְא֖וּ (shall you⁺ fear) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (gods) אֲחֵרִֽים׃ (other). 39  כִּ֛י (For) אִֽם־ (but) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ God) תִּירָ֑אוּ (you⁺ shall fear), וְהוּא֙ (and He) יַצִּ֣יל (will deliver) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) מִיַּ֖ד (from the hand) כָּל־ (of all) אֹיְבֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ enemies).

40  וְלֹ֖א (Not) שָׁמֵ֑עוּ (they did obey), כִּ֛י (for) אִֽם־ (but) כְּמִשְׁפָּטָ֥ם (according to their custom) הָֽרִאשׁ֖וֹן (former) הֵ֥ם (they) עֹשִֽׂים׃ (acted). 41  וַיִּהְי֣וּ׀ (And it came to pass that) הַגּוֹיִ֣ם (nations) הָאֵ֗לֶּה (these) יְרֵאִים֙ (feared) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְאֶת־ (and) פְּסִֽילֵיהֶ֖ם (their carved images) הָי֣וּ (they were) עֹֽבְדִ֑ים (serving)— גַּם־ (also) בְּנֵיהֶ֣ם׀ (their sons) וּבְנֵ֣י (and the sons) בְנֵיהֶ֗ם (of their sons)— כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) עָשׂ֤וּ (did) אֲבֹתָם֙ (their fathers); הֵ֣ם (they) עֹשִׂ֔ים (are doing) עַ֖ד (even to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃פ (this).
