Judgment to Come
(Isaiah 7:17–25)

1  דְּבַר־ (The word) יְהוָ֣ה׀ (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הָיָ֗ה (came) אֶל־ (to) מִיכָה֙ (Micah) הַמֹּ֣רַשְׁתִּ֔י (the Moreshite) בִּימֵ֥י (in the days) יוֹתָ֛ם (of Jotham), אָחָ֥ז (Ahaz), יְחִזְקִיָּ֖ה (and Hezekiah) מַלְכֵ֣י (kings) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) חָזָ֥ה (he saw) עַל־ (regarding) שֹׁמְר֖וֹן (Samaria) וִירֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (and Jerusalem).

2  שִׁמְעוּ֙ (Hear), עַמִּ֣ים (O peoples); כֻּלָּ֔ם (all of them)

הַקְשִׁ֖יבִי (Pay attention), אֶ֣רֶץ (O earth), וּמְלֹאָ֑הּ (and its fullness);

וִיהִי֩ (and let be) אֲדֹנָ֨י (the Lord) יְהוִ֤ה (YHWH) בָּכֶם֙ (against you⁺) לְעֵ֔ד (as a witness)

אֲדֹנָ֖י (the Lord) מֵהֵיכַ֥ל (from the temple) קָדְשֽׁוֹ׃ (of His holiness).

3  כִּֽי־ (For), הִנֵּ֥ה (behold), יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) יֹצֵ֣א (is coming)

מִמְּקוֹמ֑וֹ (from His station),

וְיָרַ֥ד (and He will come down), וְדָרַ֖ךְ (and will tread)

עַל־ (upon) בָּמוֹתֵי (the high places) אָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth).

4  וְנָמַ֤סּוּ (And will melt) הֶֽהָרִים֙ (the mountains) תַּחְתָּ֔יו (under Him)

וְהָעֲמָקִ֖ים (and the valleys) יִתְבַּקָּ֑עוּ (will split apart),

כַּדּוֹנַג֙ (like wax) מִפְּנֵ֣י (before the face) הָאֵ֔שׁ (of the fire),

כְּמַ֖יִם (like waters) מֻגָּרִ֥ים (poured down) בְּמוֹרָֽד׃ (on a slope).

5  בְּפֶ֤שַׁע (For the transgression) יַֽעֲקֹב֙ (of Jacob) כָּל־ (is all) זֹ֔את (this),

וּבְחַטֹּ֖אות (and for the sins) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel).

מִֽי־ (What is) פֶ֣שַׁע (the transgression) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (of Jacob)?

הֲלוֹא֙ (Is it not) שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן (Samaria)?

וּמִי֙ (And what are) בָּמ֣וֹת (the high places) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah)?

הֲל֖וֹא (Are they not) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (Jerusalem)?

6  וְשַׂמְתִּ֥י (And I will set) שֹׁמְר֛וֹן (Samaria)

לְעִ֥י (as a heap of ruins) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (in the field),

לְמַטָּ֣עֵי (a planting area) כָ֑רֶם (of a vineyard).

וְהִגַּרְתִּ֤י (And I will pour down) לַגַּי֙ (into the valley), אֲבָנֶ֔יהָ (her stones)

וִיסֹדֶ֖יהָ (and her foundations) אֲגַלֶּֽה׃ (I will uncover).

7  וְכָל־ (And all) פְּסִילֶ֣יהָ (her carved images) יֻכַּ֗תּוּ (will be crushed),

וְכָל־ (and all) אֶתְנַנֶּ֙יהָ֙ (her wages) יִשָּׂרְפ֣וּ (will be burned) בָאֵ֔שׁ (in the fire),

וְכָל־ (and all) עֲצַבֶּ֖יהָ (her idols) אָשִׂ֣ים (I will set) שְׁמָמָ֑ה (as a desolation),

כִּ֠י (for) מֵאֶתְנַ֤ן (from the wages) זוֹנָה֙ (of a prostitute), קִבָּ֔צָה (she gathered it)

וְעַד־ (and to) אֶתְנַ֥ן (the wages) זוֹנָ֖ה (of a prostitute) יָשֽׁוּבוּ׃ (they will return).

Weeping and Mourning

8  עַל־ (Over) זֹאת֙ (this) אֶסְפְּדָ֣ה (I will mourn) וְאֵילִ֔ילָה (and wail),

אֵילְכָ֥ה (I will go) שֵׁילָל (barefoot) וְעָר֑וֹם (and naked);

אֶעֱשֶׂ֤ה (I will make) מִסְפֵּד֙ (a wailing) כַּתַּנִּ֔ים (like the jackals)

וְאֵ֖בֶל (and a lamentation) כִּבְנ֥וֹת (like the daughters) יַעֲנָֽה׃ (of the ostrich).

9  כִּ֥י (For) אֲנוּשָׁ֖ה (incurable); מַכּוֹתֶ֑יהָ (are her wounds)

כִּי־ (for) בָ֙אָה֙ (it has come) עַד־ (to) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah);

נָגַ֛ע (it has reached) עַד־ (even to) שַׁ֥עַר (the gate) עַמִּ֖י (of My people),

עַד־ (to) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (Jerusalem).

10  בְּגַת֙ (In Gath), אַל־ (do not) תַּגִּ֔ידוּ (declare it)

בָּכ֖וֹ (with weeping); אַל־ (do not) תִּבְכּ֑וּ (weep)

בְּבֵ֣ית (in Beth-) לְעַפְרָ֔ה (leaphrah) עָפָ֖ר (in the dust). הִתְפַּלָּשְׁתִּי׃ (Roll yourself).

11  עִבְרִ֥י (Pass by), לָכֶ֛ם (for yourself) יוֹשֶׁ֥בֶת (O dweller) שָׁפִ֖יר (of Shaphir),

עֶרְיָה־ (in nakedness). בֹ֑שֶׁת (Of shame)

לֹ֤א (not) יָֽצְאָה֙ (she does come out)

יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת (the dweller) צַֽאֲנָ֔ן (of Zaanan)

מִסְפַּד֙ (the mourning) בֵּ֣ית (of Beth-) הָאֵ֔צֶל (ezel);

יִקַּ֥ח (will take away) מִכֶּ֖ם (from you⁺) עֶמְדָּתֽוֹ׃ (its station).

12  כִּֽי־ (For) חָ֥לָֽה (has waited anxiously) לְט֖וֹב (for good), יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת (the dweller) מָר֑וֹת (of Maroth)

כִּֽי־ (because) יָ֤רַד (has come down) רָע֙ (calamity) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)

לְשַׁ֖עַר (to the gate) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (of Jerusalem).

13  רְתֹ֧ם (Harness) הַמֶּרְכָּבָ֛ה (the chariot) לָרֶ֖כֶשׁ (to the swift steed),

יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת (O dweller) לָכִ֑ישׁ (of Lachish),

רֵאשִׁ֨ית (the beginning) חַטָּ֥את (of sin) הִיא֙ (she was) לְבַת־ (for the daughter) צִיּ֔וֹן (of Zion);

כִּי־ (for) בָ֥ךְ (in you) נִמְצְא֖וּ (were found) פִּשְׁעֵ֥י (the transgressions) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

14  לָכֵן֙ (Therefore) תִּתְּנִ֣י (you will give) שִׁלּוּחִ֔ים (farewell gifts) עַ֖ל (to) מוֹרֶ֣שֶׁת (Moresheth-) גַּ֑ת (gath);

בָּתֵּ֤י (the houses) אַכְזִיב֙ (of Achzib) לְאַכְזָ֔ב (are a deceit)

לְמַלְכֵ֖י (to the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

15  עֹ֗ד (Again) הַיֹּרֵשׁ֙ (the possessor) אָ֣בִי (I will bring) לָ֔ךְ (to you)

יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת (O dweller) מָֽרֵשָׁ֑ה (of Mareshah).

עַד־ (To) עֲדֻּלָּ֥ם (Adullam) יָב֖וֹא (will come) כְּב֥וֹד (the glory) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

16  קָרְחִ֣י (Make yourself bald), וָגֹ֔זִּי (and shear your head)

עַל־ (over) בְּנֵ֖י (the children); תַּעֲנוּגָ֑יִךְ (of your delight)

הַרְחִ֤בִי (enlarge) קָרְחָתֵךְ֙ (your baldness) כַּנֶּ֔שֶׁר (like an eagle);

כִּ֥י (for) גָל֖וּ (they will go into exile) מִמֵּֽךְ׃ס (away from you).
