The Perils of the Pilgrim
לָמָ֣ה (Why) יְ֭הוָה (O YHWH) תַּעֲמֹ֣ד (do You stand) בְּרָח֑וֹק (far off)?
תַּ֝עְלִ֗ים (Do You hide) לְעִתּ֥וֹת (in times of) בַּצָּרָֽה׃ (distress)?
2 בְּגַאֲוַ֣ת (In his arrogance) רָ֭שָׁע (the wicked) יִדְלַ֣ק (hotly pursue) עָנִ֑י (the afflicted);
יִתָּפְשׂ֓וּ׀ (may they be caught) בִּמְזִמּ֖וֹת (in the schemes) ז֣וּ (that) חָשָֽׁבוּ׃ (they have devised).
3 כִּֽי־ (For) הִלֵּ֣ל (boasts) רָ֭שָׁע (the wicked one) עַל־ (over) תַּאֲוַ֣ת (the desire) נַפְשׁ֑וֹ (of his heart),
וּבֹצֵ֥עַ (and a dishonest gainer), בֵּ֝רֵ֗ךְ (he blesses) נִ֘אֵ֥ץ׀ (he has despised) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).
4 רָשָׁ֗ע (The wicked one), כְּגֹ֣בַהּ (in the height) אַ֭פּוֹ (of his face), בַּל־ (not) יִדְרֹ֑שׁ (does he inquire)
אֵ֥ין (there is not) אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים (God) כָּל־ (in any) מְזִמּוֹתָֽיו׃ (of his thoughts).
5 יָ֘חִ֤ילוּ (Are firm) דַרְכּוֹ (his paths) בְּכָל־ (at every) עֵ֗ת (time);
מָר֣וֹם (on high) מִ֭שְׁפָּטֶיךָ (are Your judgments) מִנֶּגְדּ֑וֹ (before him);
כָּל־ (and all) צ֝וֹרְרָ֗יו (his adversaries), יָפִ֥יחַ (he sneers) בָּהֶֽם׃ (at them).
6 אָמַ֣ר (He has said) בְּ֭לִבּוֹ (in his heart), בַּל־ (Not) אֶמּ֑וֹט (shall I be moved);
לְדֹ֥ר (from generation) וָ֝דֹ֗ר (and to generation) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (to whom) לֹֽא־ (will be no) בְרָֽע׃ (adversity).
7 אָלָ֤ה (Cursing) פִּ֣יהוּ (his mouth) מָ֭לֵא (is full of), וּמִרְמ֣וֹת (and deceit) וָתֹ֑ךְ (and oppression);
תַּ֥חַת (under) לְ֝שׁוֹנ֗וֹ (his tongue) עָמָ֥ל (are trouble) וָאָֽוֶן׃ (and iniquity).
8 יֵשֵׁ֤ב׀ (He sits) בְּמַאְרַ֬ב (in an ambush) חֲצֵרִ֗ים (of the villages);
בַּֽ֭מִּסְתָּרִים (in the hidden places) יַהֲרֹ֣ג (he kills) נָקִ֑י (the innocent one);
עֵ֝ינָ֗יו (his eyes) לְֽחֵלְכָ֥ה (on the helpless) יִצְפֹּֽנוּ׃ (look stealthily),
9 יֶאֱרֹ֬ב (He lies in wait) בַּמִּסְתָּ֨ר׀ (in the hidden place) כְּאַרְיֵ֬ה (as a lion) בְסֻכֹּ֗ה (in his lair);
יֶ֭אֱרֹב (He lies in wait) לַחֲט֣וֹף (to catch) עָנִ֑י (the afflicted one);
יַחְטֹ֥ף (he catches) עָ֝נִ֗י (the afflicted one) בְּמָשְׁכ֥וֹ (by drawing him) בְרִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ (into his net).
10 וְדָכָה (He is crushed), יָשֹׁ֑חַ (bent down),
וְנָפַ֥ל (and he falls) בַּ֝עֲצוּמָ֗יו (by his strength) חֶלְכָּאִים׃ (and the hapless one).
11 אָמַ֣ר (He has said) בְּ֭לִבּוֹ (in his heart), שָׁ֣כַֽח (Has forgotten) אֵ֑ל (God);
הִסְתִּ֥יר (He hides) פָּ֝נָ֗יו (His face); בַּל־ (not) רָאָ֥ה (He will see it) לָנֶֽצַח׃ (forever).
12 קוּמָ֤ה (Arise), יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH)! אֵ֭ל (O God), נְשָׂ֣א (lift up) יָדֶ֑ךָ (Your hand)!
אַל־ (Not) תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח (must you forget) עֲנִיִּים׃ (the afflicted ones).
13 עַל־ (Upon) מֶ֤ה׀ (what) נִאֵ֖ץ (does spurn) רָשָׁ֥ע׀ (the wicked) אֱלֹהִ֑ים (God)?
אָמַ֥ר (He has said) בְּ֝לִבּ֗וֹ (in his heart), לֹ֣א (Not) תִּדְרֹֽשׁ׃ (will you call me to account).
14 רָאִ֡תָה (You have seen), כִּֽי־ (Indeed) אַתָּ֤ה׀ (you)
עָ֘מָ֤ל (trouble) וָכַ֨עַס׀ (and grief) תַּבִּיט֮ (You regard), לָתֵ֪ת (to give it) בְּיָ֫דֶ֥ךָ (into Your hand).
עָ֭לֶיךָ (To You) יַעֲזֹ֣ב (leaves himself) חֵלֶ֑כָה (the hapless one);
יָ֝ת֗וֹם (for the fatherless) אַתָּ֤ה׀ (You) הָיִ֬יתָ (are) עוֹזֵֽר׃ (the one helping).
15 שְׁ֭בֹר (Break) זְר֣וֹעַ (the arm) רָשָׁ֑ע (of the wicked) וָ֝רָ֗ע (and evildoer);
תִּֽדְרוֹשׁ־ (seek out) רִשְׁע֥וֹ (his wickedness)
בַל־ (until none) תִּמְצָֽא׃ (is found).
16 יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH is) מֶ֭לֶךְ (King) עוֹלָ֣ם (forever) וָעֶ֑ד (and ever);
אָבְד֥וּ (have perished) ג֝וֹיִ֗ם (the nations) מֵֽאַרְצֽוֹ׃ (from His land).
17 תַּאֲוַ֬ת (The desire) עֲנָוִ֣ים (of the afflicted ones) שָׁמַ֣עְתָּ (You have heard), יְהוָ֑ה (O YHWH),
תָּכִ֥ין (You will make firm) לִ֝בָּ֗ם (their hearts);
תַּקְשִׁ֥יב (You will incline) אָזְנֶֽךָ׃ (Your ear),
18 לִשְׁפֹּ֥ט (to do justice) יָת֗וֹם (for the fatherless) וָ֫דָ֥ךְ (and oppressed)—
בַּל־ (not) יוֹסִ֥יף (shall he continue) ע֑וֹד (anymore) לַעֲרֹ֥ץ (to terrorize)
אֱ֝נ֗וֹשׁ (the man) מִן־ (from) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).
