And do not be concerned about what you will eat or drink. In this passage, Jesus addresses the common human anxiety over basic needs. The cultural context of first-century Judea was one of subsistence living, where daily provision was a significant concern. Jesus' teaching here echoes the Old Testament provision of manna in the wilderness (Exodus 16), where God provided daily sustenance for the Israelites, emphasizing reliance on divine provision. This phrase also connects to the broader biblical theme of God as the provider, as seen in Psalm 23:1, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." Jesus, as the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), assures His followers that their needs will be met. The instruction not to be concerned reflects a call to trust in God's faithfulness and sovereignty, aligning with the teachings in Matthew 6:25-34, where Jesus elaborates on God's care for creation and His children. Do not worry about it. Persons / Places / Events 1. Jesus ChristThe speaker of this passage, offering guidance to His disciples and followers on how to live a life free from anxiety and worry. 2. Teaching Points Trust in God's ProvisionJesus calls us to trust that God will provide for our needs, just as He cares for the birds and flowers. This trust should replace our worries about daily necessities. Prioritize the Kingdom Our focus should be on seeking God's kingdom and righteousness, trusting that our material needs will be met as a result. Freedom from Anxiety By releasing our concerns to God, we can experience freedom from anxiety, allowing us to live more fully in the present and serve others. Faith Over Fear Faith in God's promises should overcome our fears about the future, reminding us that He is in control and knows our needs. Practical Steps to Combat Worry Engage in prayer, meditation on Scripture, and community support to actively combat worry and reinforce trust in God.Verse 29. - And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink. Again, after the moving, touching words we have been commenting on, does the Lord return to the pressing injunction with which he began his lessons to his disciples upon the parable of the "rich fool." Trouble not yourselves about your eating and drinking. This repeated insistence of the Master upon this point in the future lives of his disciples has evidently a deeper significance than a mere injunction to cast all their care on him, and not to be over-anxious about their poor earthly maintenance. This was, of course, the first lesson they had to learn from these words; but beneath all this they could, and no doubt often in later days did, read in the words a clear expression of their dear Lord's will in favor of the utmost simplicity in all matters of food and drink. His own must be marked men here, ever frugal and temperate even to abstemiousness. It is a grave question whether his Church has ever fully grasped the Master's meaning here. Neither be ye of doubtful mind; literally, do not toss about like boats in the offing (so Dr. Farrar very happily). The word is not found elsewhere in New Testament writers, but it is known in classic writers. Its use here is one of the many signs of St. Luke's high culture. Parallel Commentaries ...
