Ecclesiastes 9
Berean Study Bible

Death Comes to Good and Bad

So I took all this to heart and concluded

The writer weighs the realities of life carefully, drawing conclusions from what he has observed about wisdom, righteousness, death, and human uncertainty.

Deu 4:39 Know therefore this day and take to heart…
Ecc 7:25 I directed my mind to understand, to explore…
Pro 24:32 I observed and took it to heart; I looked…

that the righteous and the wise, as well as their deeds, are in God’s hands.

God rules over the lives and work of those who fear Him. Wisdom and righteousness do not place anyone beyond hardship, yet neither the person nor the outcome of his labor is outside God’s care and authority.

Psa 31:15 My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies…
Pro 16:3 Commit your works to the LORD and your plans…
Psa 37:23-24 The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD…

Man does not know what lies ahead,

Present circumstances do not reveal the course of a person’s future. Prosperity may give way to suffering, and trouble may be followed by deliverance; only God knows what He has appointed.

Ecc 8:7 Since no one knows what will happen, who can tell him…
Jas 4:14 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow!…
Pro 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know…

whether love or hate.

No one can determine from outward conditions whether favor or adversity awaits. The righteous may encounter both blessing and sorrow in this fallen world, while God remains sovereign over all that comes.

Ecc 3:8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war…
Mal 1:2-3 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask……
Rom 9:13 So it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

It is the same for all:

Death comes to every person without regard to rank, wealth, reputation, or outward religion. Life’s final earthly outcome exposes the limits of human control and the inability of temporal circumstances to reveal God’s ultimate judgment.

Job 21:23-26 One man dies full of vigor, completely secure and at ease.…
Psa 49:10 For it is clear that wise men die, and the foolish…

There is a common fate for the righteous and the wicked,

Those who seek to obey God and those who reject Him alike die. Their shared mortality does not erase the difference between righteousness and wickedness; it shows that full justice is not always displayed within this present life.

Job 9:22 It is all the same, and so I say, ‘He destroys both…
Ecc 8:14 There is a futility that is done on the earth:…

for the good and the bad,

Earthly outcomes do not consistently correspond to moral conduct. The good may suffer and the wicked may prosper for a time, while both remain subject to the same frailty and death.

Mat 5:45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.…
Luk 6:35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them…

for the clean and the unclean,

Ceremonial purity held an important place in Israel’s worship, yet it could not remove the curse of death. External observance alone could not secure life or establish a person’s heart before God.

Lev 10:10 You must distinguish between the holy and the common…
Lev 11:47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean…

for the one who sacrifices and the one who does not.

Sacrifices belonged to the worship God commanded under the Law, but no ritual exempted anyone from death. The offering pointed beyond itself to humanity’s need for atonement and reconciliation with God.

1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…
Hos 6:6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God…

As it is for the good, so it is for the sinner;

Moral distinctions remain real before God, but death reaches both alike. All people stand in need of God’s mercy and will answer to Him beyond the grave.

Pro 11:31 If the righteous receive their due on earth,…
1Pe 4:18 And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved”…

as it is for the one who makes a vow, so it is for the one who refuses to take a vow.

A solemn commitment to God carries weight and must be honored, yet making a vow does not place someone beyond mortality. Faithfulness is not measured by religious promises alone, but by genuine obedience to God.

Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…
Num 30:2 If a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath…

This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun:

Life in a fallen world often appears disordered, as events do not always correspond to human merit or justice. The sorrow lies in the grievous reality that earthly circumstances can seem indiscriminate. Here, “evil” refers to this perceived injustice and futility, not moral evil.

Ecc 1:14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun…
Ecc 2:11 Yet when I considered the works my hands had accomplished…
Rom 8:20 For the creation was subjected to futility,…

There is one fate for everyone.

Death comes to the righteous and wicked, rich and poor, wise and foolish alike. Adam’s sin brought death into human experience, making the grave the common end of all people.

Ecc 2:14 The wise man has eyes in his head, but the fool…
Ecc 3:19-20 For the fates of both men and beasts are the same:…
Heb 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that…

Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil and madness while they are alive,

Humanity’s problem is not merely outward suffering but inward corruption. Sin produces rebellion against God and the foolishness of living without regard for His rule.

Gen 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man…
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.…
Ecc 7:25 I directed my mind to understand, to explore…

and afterward they join the dead.

Death ends earthly activity and places every person before God’s judgment. The certainty of death exposes the limits of life under the sun and the need for the life God gives beyond the grave.

Psa 49:14-15 Like sheep they are destined for Sheol.…
Job 14:10-12 But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last…
Gen 3:19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread,…

There is hope, however, for anyone who is among the living;

As long as life remains, a person can seek God, gain wisdom, repent of sin, and act faithfully. Death brings an end to earthly labor and opportunity.

Psa 27:13 Still I am certain to see the goodness of the LORD…
Psa 118:17 I will not die, but I will live and proclaim…
Isa 38:18-19 For Sheol cannot thank You; Death cannot praise You.…

for even a live dog is better than a dead lion.

Dogs were commonly regarded as lowly scavengers, while lions represented strength and honor. Yet the weakest living creature has more possibility than the mightiest one in death. Earthly power and reputation cannot overcome the finality of death.

Php 1:21-24 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.…
Psa 49:14-15 Like sheep they are destined for Sheol.…
Jhn 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.”…

For the living know that they will die,

The living possess the sobering knowledge that life is limited and death is certain. This awareness calls for wisdom in the present, since each person’s time and opportunities under the sun are finite.

Psa 39:4-5 Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days.…
Heb 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that…
Job 14:1-2 “Man, who is born of woman, is short of days…”…

but the dead know nothing.

Those who have died no longer participate in the affairs, knowledge, labor, or experiences of this earthly life. From the perspective of life under the sun, their involvement in the world has ended.

Psa 146:4 When his spirit departs, he returns to the ground;…
Isa 38:18-19 For Sheol cannot thank You; Death cannot praise You.…
Psa 115:17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD,…

They have no further reward,

The dead can no longer gain the benefits, recognition, possessions, or accomplishments they sought during life.

Psa 49:17 For when he dies, he will carry nothing away;…
Luk 12:20-21 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night…
1Ti 6:7 For we brought nothing into the world…

because the memory of them is forgotten.

Even honored names and achievements fade as generations pass, exposing the temporary nature of human reputation and earthly legacy.

Psa 9:6 The enemy has come to eternal ruin, and You have uprooted……
Psa 109:15 May their sins always remain before the LORD,…
Pro 10:7 The memory of the righteous is a blessing,…

Their love, their hate, and their envy have already vanished,

Death brings an end to the dead person’s involvement in the relationships, rivalries, desires, and ambitions of earthly life. The emotions that once shaped their actions no longer affect anything done among the living.

Psa 146:4 When his spirit departs, he returns to the ground;…
Psa 115:17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD,…
Isa 38:18-19 For Sheol cannot thank You; Death cannot praise You.…

and they will never again have a share

The dead cannot return to resume unfinished work, influence events, or participate in the concerns of those still living. Their opportunity to act in this present life has ended.

Job 7:9-10 As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down…
Job 14:12 so a man lies down and does not rise.…
2Sa 12:23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast?…

in all that is done under the sun.

Solomon speaks of life “under the sun,” that is, life on earth from a human perspective, as it is experienced on earth. The statement concerns participation in earthly affairs, not a denial of God’s future judgment or resurrection. It presses the living to recognize the finality of death and the limited time given for their work and choices.

Ecc 1:14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun…
Ecc 2:11 Yet when I considered the works my hands had accomplished…
Ecc 3:16 Furthermore, I saw under the sun that in the place of judgment…

Enjoy Your Portion in This Life

Go,

Set aside paralyzing anxiety and receive the ordinary days God gives. Though death and uncertainty remain in view, the Preacher calls God’s people to live faithfully in the present rather than withdraw from life.

Luk 14:17 When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant…
Mat 22:4 Again, he sent other servants and said, ‘Tell those who…
Isa 55:1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters;…

eat your bread with joy,

Daily food is God’s provision, even in a fallen world. Ordinary meals may be received with gratitude rather than fear or discontent.

Pro 9:5 “Come, eat my bread and drink the wine I have mixed.
Neh 8:10 Then Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich,…
Ecc 2:24 Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink…

and drink your wine with a cheerful heart,

Wine belonged to Israel’s common meals and celebrations. Its enjoyment is pictured as part of a settled, thankful life under God’s care, not as an excuse for excess.

Psa 104:15 wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil that makes his face…
Pro 15:15 All the days of the oppressed are bad, but a cheerful heart…
Psa 4:7 You have filled my heart with more joy than…

for God has already approved your works:

God permits and blesses the faithful enjoyment of His gifts. The Preacher does not commend self-indulgence, but a life lived within God’s order, receiving work, food, and gladness as His appointed portion.

Ecc 3:13 and also that every man should eat and drink……
Ecc 5:19 Furthermore, God has given riches and wealth…
Col 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being,…

Let your garments always be white,

White clothing marked festal occasions, cleanliness, and joy in Israel’s culture. In the midst of life’s brevity and the certainty of death, Solomon urges God’s people to receive ordinary blessings with gratitude and to live in a manner consistent with God’s approval.

Rev 3:4-5 But you do have a few people in Sardis…
Rev 7:13-14 Then one of the elders addressed me: “These in white robes,”…
Rev 19:8 She was given clothing of fine linen, bright and pure.”…

and never spare the oil for your head.

Olive oil was used for grooming, refreshment, hospitality, and celebration. Its regular use pictured a life not ruled by despair, but marked by gladness and confidence in God’s provision.

Mat 6:17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
Psa 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.…
Luk 7:46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed…

Enjoy life with your beloved wife

Marriage is God’s provision for companionship, faithfulness, and mutual help. A husband is to receive his wife with gratitude and share with her the ordinary joys of life.

Pro 5:18-19 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice…
Mal 2:14-15 Yet you ask, “Why?” It is because the LORD has been a witness…

all the days of the fleeting life

Human life is brief and passes quickly. Its brevity gives added weight to the daily responsibilities and blessings God places before His people.

Psa 90:10 The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty…
Jas 4:14 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow!…

that God has given you under the sun—

Life in this present world comes from God and remains under His rule, even amid its hardships and unanswered questions.

Act 17:25 Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything,…
Jas 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above…

all your fleeting days.

The repetition stresses that each day is limited. Joy in lawful gifts, especially within the home, should not be postponed or treated lightly.

1Ch 29:15 For we are foreigners and strangers in Your presence,…
Psa 102:11 My days are like lengthening shadows…

For this is your portion in life

A faithful marriage and the ability to enjoy its blessings are part of the share God appoints to a person in this life.

Ecc 3:22 I have seen that there is nothing better for a man…
Psa 16:5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup;…

and in your labor under the sun.

Work remains a necessary part of life after the fall, yet God grants meaning and satisfaction when one receives both labor and its fruits as His provision.

Ecc 5:18-20 Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting:…
Col 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being,…

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might,

Earthly life is the appointed time for labor, service, and the responsible use of the abilities and opportunities God provides. Work is to be done with diligence rather than delay, since the present moment cannot be recovered.

Col 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being,…
Pro 10:4 Idle hands make one poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.
Pro 14:23 There is profit in all labor, but mere talk…

for in Sheol, where you are going,

Sheol refers to the realm of the dead, toward which all people eventually go. The certainty of death places a limit on earthly life and its responsibilities.

Job 7:9-10 As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down…
Gen 37:35 All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him,…
Psa 89:48 Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol?…

there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.

Death ends the activities, decisions, learning, and accomplishments that belong to life in this world. The warning is to act faithfully while God grants strength, time, and opportunity.

Psa 146:4 When his spirit departs, he returns to the ground;…
Psa 88:11-12 Can Your loving devotion be proclaimed in the grave,…
Psa 115:17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD,…

I saw something else under the sun:

Solomon adds another observation from life in the present world, where outcomes often defy human expectations.

Ecc 1:14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun…
Ecc 8:17 Despite his efforts to search it out, he cannot find…
Ecc 2:11 Yet when I considered the works my hands had accomplished…

The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong;

Speed and strength provide advantages, yet they cannot guarantee victory. Circumstances, timing, and events beyond human control can change the result.

Amo 2:14-16 Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail…
Psa 147:10-11 He does not delight in the strength of the horse;…
Pro 21:31 A horse is prepared for the day of battle,…

neither is the bread to the wise, nor the wealth to the intelligent, nor the favor to the skillful.

Wisdom, intelligence, and skill are valuable, but they do not always bring food, riches, or public recognition. Human ability alone cannot secure prosperity or success.

Psa 127:1-2 A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds…
Pro 3:13-16 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man…
Pro 22:29 Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will be stationed……

For time and chance happen to all.

People encounter unexpected opportunities, delays, losses, and reversals. No one fully controls the course of life, which remains under God’s sovereign rule.

Ecc 8:6-8 For there is a right time and procedure to every purpose…
Psa 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written…
Jas 4:13-15 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow…

For surely no man knows his time:

Human beings cannot foresee the moment of death or the crises that may alter their course. Solomon observes the limits of human wisdom and control, reminding readers that God alone governs the times and events of life.

Job 14:5 Since his days are determined and the number of his months…
Psa 39:4-5 Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days.…
Psa 90:12 So teach us to number our days, that we may…

Like fish caught in a cruel net

Fish may move freely until a net closes around them without warning. The image portrays calamity as sudden, inescapable, and often beyond human anticipation.

Hab 1:14-17 You have made men like the fish of the sea,…
Psa 66:11-12 You led us into the net; You laid burdens on our backs.…
Psa 9:15 The nations have fallen into a pit of their making;…

or birds trapped in a snare,

Birds feeding or flying unsuspectingly can be seized by a hidden trap. So people may encounter disaster when they believe themselves secure, exposing the frailty of human plans.

Pro 1:17 How futile it is to spread the net where any bird can see it…
Psa 124:7 We have escaped like a bird from the snare…
Psa 91:3 Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler.…

so men are ensnared in an evil time

Times of war, disease, injustice, disaster, and personal loss can come upon individuals and nations alike. Such evil times belong to life in a fallen world and reveal that no earthly security is permanent.

Amo 5:13 Therefore, the prudent keep silent in such times…
Isa 8:15 Many will stumble over these; they will fall and be broken;…
Jer 50:24 I laid a snare for you, O Babylon, and you were caught…

that suddenly falls upon them.

Calamity often arrives without notice, leaving no opportunity to prepare by human strength alone. The warning calls for humility before God and readiness to live faithfully while time remains.

1Th 5:3 While people are saying, “Peace and security,”…
Pro 6:15 Therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;…
Pro 29:1 A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof…

Wisdom Is Better than Strength

I have also seen this wisdom under the sun,

The Teacher introduces an event from ordinary human life under the sun, emphasizing an earthly, temporal perspective, that reveals both the strength and the frequent neglect of wisdom. His attention remains on the realities of life in this fallen world, where outcomes do not always honor merit or righteousness.

Ecc 2:13 And I saw that wisdom exceeds folly, just as…
Ecc 7:11-12 Wisdom, like an inheritance, is good…
Ecc 1:14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun…

and it was great to me:

What follows made a deep impression because it showed that wise counsel can accomplish what power and numbers cannot. Yet the account also exposes how quickly people forget the one whose wisdom delivered them.

Pro 3:13-18 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man…
Pro 4:7 Wisdom is supreme; so acquire wisdom…
Ecc 7:12 For wisdom, like money, is a shelter, and…

There was a small city with few men.

The city was lightly populated and poorly equipped to resist a major army. Its condition highlights the helplessness of a small community when faced with a far stronger power.

2Ki 7:3-4 Now there were four men with leprosy at the entrance…
1Sa 14:6 Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come…
Jdg 9:50-53 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, encamped against it…

A mighty king came against it,

The attacking ruler possessed the soldiers, authority, and resources needed to dominate weaker cities. Such campaigns were common in the ancient Near East, where powerful kingdoms expanded through conquest and tribute.

2Ki 18:13-17 In the fourteenth year of Hezekiah’s reign…
2Ch 32:1-2 After all these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib…
Jer 52:4 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…

surrounded it,

A siege cut off food, water, trade, and escape, placing the inhabitants under severe pressure. Once enclosed, a small city had little prospect of surviving without unexpected deliverance.

Luk 19:43-44 For the days will come upon you when your enemies……
Isa 29:3 I will camp in a circle around you; I will besiege you…
2Ki 6:14-15 the king of Aram sent horses, chariots…

and built large siege ramps against it.

Siege ramps enabled attacking forces to bring soldiers and weapons against fortified walls. The account presents a realistic picture of ancient warfare and prepares for the surprising deliverance that follows.

2Sa 20:15 As all the troops with Joab were battering the wall…
Jer 6:6 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Ezk 4:2 Then lay siege against it: Construct a siege wall,…

Now a poor wise man was found in the city,

In the small city under threat, a man of no wealth or social standing possessed the wisdom needed to help. His poverty did not diminish the value of his counsel or the importance of his service.

Pro 28:11 A rich man is wise in his own eyes, but a poor man…
Ecc 7:19 Wisdom makes the wise man stronger than ten rulers…
Jas 2:5 Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not God chosen the poor…

and he saved the city by his wisdom.

Though the city faced a powerful enemy, deliverance came through wise action rather than military strength, wealth, or rank. Wisdom proved greater than outward power.

Pro 21:22 A wise man scales the city of the mighty…
2Sa 20:16-22 a wise woman called out from the city, “Listen! Listen!”…
Pro 24:5-6 A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge…

Yet no one remembered that poor man.

After the danger passed, the man who had preserved the city received no lasting honor. His fate exposes the unreliability of human recognition and the tendency to value status more than true wisdom.

Gen 40:23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph;…
Ecc 2:16 For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise,…

And I said, “Wisdom is better than strength,

Wisdom surpasses physical power because it enables a person to discern what is right and act with restraint. Solomon’s request for wisdom rather than riches or military greatness showed that true leadership depends on understanding and righteous judgment.

Ecc 7:19 Wisdom makes the wise man stronger than ten rulers…
Pro 24:5 A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge…
1Co 1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom…

but the wisdom of the poor man is despised,

Yet people often dismiss sound counsel when it comes from someone without wealth, position, or influence. The world’s judgment commonly measures worth by outward status rather than character and truth.

Ecc 4:13 Better is a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king…
Jas 2:6 But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich…
Pro 14:20 The poor man is hated even by his neighbor,…

and his words are not heeded.”

A wise warning may be ignored simply because its source is overlooked. Israel’s history repeatedly showed the cost of rejecting faithful counsel, whether from prophets, servants, or humble individuals whom others considered insignificant.

Pro 1:24-25 Because you refused my call, and no one took…
Jer 7:27 When you tell them all these things, they will not listen…
Luk 10:16 Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you…

The calm words of the wise

Wise counsel is often delivered with restraint and clarity rather than anger or display. Such words carry weight because they arise from understanding and are directed toward what is true and beneficial.

Pro 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word…
Pro 12:18 Speaking rashly is like a piercing sword,…
Pro 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold…

are heeded over

Though quiet wisdom may seem less impressive than forceful speech, it deserves greater attention. Its value is shown in the soundness of the counsel and the outcomes it produces.

Pro 19:20 Listen to counsel and accept discipline…
Pro 8:33 Listen to instruction and be wise; do not ignore it.
Pro 1:5 let the wise listen and gain instruction,…

the shouts of a ruler among fools.

A ruler may speak loudly and command attention, yet his words are empty when he is surrounded by foolish advisers or governed by folly himself. The contrast warns that authority and noise do not make counsel wise.

Pro 17:7 Eloquent words are unfit for a fool; how much worse…
Pro 29:11 A fool vents all his anger, but a wise man holds it back.
Pro 19:12 A king’s rage is like the roar of a lion,…

Wisdom is better than weapons of war,

Military strength can defend a nation, but wise leadership prevents needless conflict, directs resources well, and secures lasting peace. Solomon’s reign demonstrated how God-given wisdom brought order, prosperity, and stability to Israel.

Pro 24:5-6 A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge…
Pro 21:22 A wise man scales the city of the mighty…
Ecc 7:12 For wisdom, like money, is a shelter, and…

but one sinner destroys much good.

One person’s rebellion can damage an entire community, as Achan’s sin brought defeat upon Israel at Ai. Sin corrupts what wisdom and righteousness build, producing consequences that often reach far beyond the offender.

Jos 7:1 The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully…
1Co 5:6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know…
Gal 5:9 A little leaven works through the whole batch of dough.
